Rep. Darrell Issa Sacks Key Aide in E-Mail Flap

Rep. Darrell Issa, chairman of a powerful House investigative panel, said Tuesday he fired one of his top aides after discovering that the communications specialist had been sharing reporters' e-mails with a New York Times writer.

Issa (R-Calif.) said it was clear that Deputy Communications Director Kurt Bardella shared "reporter e-mail correspondence with New York Times journalist Mark Leibovich for a book project." Bardella's dealings were limited and involved only e-mails shipped to him, Issa said. But the "actions were highly inappropriate, a basic breach of trust with the reporters it was his job to assist," the lawmaker said in a statement.

Leibovich, who is on leave from the Times, is writing a book about Washington's political culture. Bardella, 27, had been with Issa for two years and was overseeing an effort to generate publicity for the chairman and his House Oversight and Government Reform Committee, which has subpoena power to carry out investigations. The panel is widely expected to haul in Obama administration officials as it launches inquiries, particularly involving reviews of federal regulations.

Sources told the Washington Post hundreds of e-mails are involved, but many of them concern only routine matters. The Post said Leibovich declined to comment -- and Bardella did not return phone and e-mail messages. But Leibovich told the Times Monday, "It's no secret that I've spent a fair amount of time with Kurt over the last few months. . . . Kurt's been very open. I have no idea what role he will play in the final product. He's part of an ensemble of characters."

Our New Approach to Comments

In an effort to encourage the same level of civil dialogue among Politics Daily’s readers that we expect of our writers – a “civilogue,” to use the term coined by PD’s Jeffrey Weiss – we are requiring commenters to use their AOL or AIM screen names to submit a comment, and we are reading all comments before publishing them. Personal attacks (on writers, other readers, Nancy Pelosi, George W. Bush, or anyone at all) and comments that are not productive additions to the conversation will not be published, period, to make room for a discussion among those with ideas to kick around. Please read our Help and Feedback section for more info.

Rep. Issa is a natural leader, not afraid to do what has to be done. Kudos to him!

There is a standing "rule" that questioning or analyzing a politician's motives are off limits to the press. Issa should be made an exception. His multiple brushes with the law in the past, which reflected his character, and his pre-announced intentions to use his new position in Congress to bring the Obama administration to its knees scream for scrupulously honest explanations. He continues to issue image boosting propaganda of his own design. Is this why he "needs" an obedient Communications Director?

The first things the Committee should ivestigate are:

1. Why a former convict like Issa is in office
2. Why Issa had a positive relationship with Hezbollah - an Iranian supported terror group
3. Why, when we are in a debt spiral, the taxpayers are paying for a staffer to get Issa publicity to help his future political career.

Good for you! Breach of trust is grounds for immeiate dismissal. I think this young man's youth is a window into his actions. Putting someone that young in charge of this was irrisponsible at best. He doesn't understand the workings of the real world as of yet. I'm all for new and different, but let's not throw out conventional wisdom.
