'Daily Show' Hot on the Trail of AWOL Wisconsin Lawmakers

Where are the "Wisconsin 14"? "Daily Show" correspondent John Oliver tried to track down the missing Democratic state senators who are frustrating Gov. Scott Walker's bid to curtail the collective bargaining rights of public employee unions.

Monday on the Comedy Central program, the trail led faux reporter Oliver to the "notorious, lawless region" of Illinois, where he was forced to go through a series of checkpoints -- fast food drive-throughs on a tacky commercial strip -- in the "Rockford Province" before finding former Illinois governor (and "notorious former warlord") Rod Blagojevich.

The ex-governor, who is facing a retrial this year on the corruption charges that got him thrown out of office, played it straight. "I don't know where they are," he told the intrepid newshound, adding that the missing senators are "standing up for working people" in Wisconsin. Along the way, Oliver also interviewed a tea party activist who said some of the lawmakers had been spotted at a tavern described as a "Scottish-type Hooters."

Finally Oliver encountered state Sen. Jon Erpenbach in what appeared to be a darkened motel room. While the legislator talked earnestly of the situation in Madison, Oliver peppered him with spoofy, provocative questions ("Why do you hate American democracy?") and then provided a false translation of his responses. "I'm just a typical guy from Wisconsin," poor Erpenbach insisted.

It was all in fun, of course. "The Daily Show" is a fake news program, although it touches on real issues and does some authentic reporting.

Our New Approach to Comments

In an effort to encourage the same level of civil dialogue among Politics Daily’s readers that we expect of our writers – a “civilogue,” to use the term coined by PD’s Jeffrey Weiss – we are requiring commenters to use their AOL or AIM screen names to submit a comment, and we are reading all comments before publishing them. Personal attacks (on writers, other readers, Nancy Pelosi, George W. Bush, or anyone at all) and comments that are not productive additions to the conversation will not be published, period, to make room for a discussion among those with ideas to kick around. The ultimate goal is to make a corporate monopoly of the USA, the days of corporate company stores are threatening us again my fellow Americans thanks to these deceptive attempts by Republicans. "I sold my soul to the company store...." Thanks to these Wisconsin we who treasure learning, knowledge, freedom, and God know the truth. The company store guys is the desire for the working family as per the Republicans desire.

I've never witnessed such an assault on the middle class, women, and the working man as I have recfently by the GOP.

Why aren't they as "outraged" by the financial community that caused the global meltdown? Why aren't they crying out to have the perpetrators prosecuted?

The GOP has never stood for the average American. The last decent Republican president was Teddy Roosevelt.

The very trickle down disasters caused by the republicans during the Reagan and Bush administrations, supported by the GOP are now visited upon the American middle class, women and working man.

They have the audacity of Mendacity, hypocrisy and the weak minded brain washed masses to support them.

Budget cuts, union busting and women's right oh my, say goodbye to the American Dream brought to you by Millionaires, Billionaires and the Supreme Court's Citizen's United ruling.

America is now up for sale and the GOP knows it, you would too if you could read the writing on the Stonewalling GOP and Boehner.

When the minority hides because they do not like legislation by the elected majority, they disgracefully circumvent democracy in favor of dictatorship like behavior.

Hogwash! If the majority runs and hides every time they disagree with the elected majority, democracy is over. Or perhaps the minoirity GOP in the US Senate should run and hide until Dems do as they demand. Duh.
