Houses Passes Another Stopgap Spending Bill

The House approved another short-term spending bill Tuesday afternoon, a step in keeping the government open beyond Friday but drawing complaints from some members who want a permanent fix.

The measure passed 271 to 158, with 54 GOP members opposing it, according to news reports. It would keep the federal government running through April 8 while House and Senate negotiators try to hammer out a longer-term spending plan for the rest of the fiscal year. The measure now goes to the Senate for a vote.

An earlier stopgap bill passed in early March trimmed $4 billion in federal spending and provided money to keep federal agencies operating through March 18.

The new continuing resolution cuts some $6 billion, still far short of the $61 billion the GOP-controlled House agreed to trim from the federal budget for the rest of the year. But the Democratically controlled Senate rejected the larger House bill, and the impasse over the budget has forced Congress to consider short-term measures until a compromise can be reached.

Our New Approach to Comments

In an effort to encourage the same level of civil dialogue among Politics Daily’s readers that we expect of our writers – a “civilogue,” to use the term coined by PD’s Jeffrey Weiss – we are requiring commenters to use their AOL or AIM screen names to submit a comment, and we are reading all comments before publishing them. Personal attacks (on writers, other readers, Nancy Pelosi, George W. Bush, or anyone at all) and comments that are not productive additions to the conversation will not be published, period, to make room for a discussion among those with ideas to kick around. To deal with the budget and debt you must know how it got this way. The first thing you need to know is of the14 trillion owed 10 trillion happened under just 3 conservative republican President (Reagan, Bush and Bush Jr).
The next thing you have to understand is we just got out of a recession that some are calling a depression, and the last thing you do is cut spending. Take a look at the UK they elected a conservative government last year and cut spending, and now they find themselves back in a recession. You have to wait till the revenue comes back and jobs have returned, then you deal with the debt slowly and carefully. Know this the last 2 Presidents to balance the budget and start paying down the debt were Clinton, and Carter. I find it very funny that the party that ran up the debt, the party that crashed the economy, is the party crying the most about the debt but only after they gave the rich their tax cuts. You want to cut the debt, rolled back the Bush tax cuts. You really want to cut the debt end the wars and cut the military. The President said he want to cut the corporate taxes but get rid of all the loop holes and dodges, do it! But what the GOP is doing is using the mess they made to attack programs they hate that help WORKING AMERICANS. People also need to remember the goal of the GOP has been to prevent Obama from getting re-elected, and a good strong economy favors the President. So the GOP will do all they can to keep things in the ditch and wage their fingers at the President.

Dems just want to keep right on borrowing and spending until China own the rest of America. 2012 elections are going to look a lot like 2010, only this time it will also include our WH.

This is all nickle and dime. There is only one way they are going to get out of this hole is to raise taxes. Bush should never have cut them in the first place. No one complained in the days of Clinton I can remember we were all making and spending. Most had money in their pocket and could do almost anything they wanted to do..

Democrats and unions don't want a budget since it stalls the spending spree. I guess they want the government to continue paying bills by printing money and increasing debt. After a while, the interest paid on the debt will equal a major portion of the government's revenues. It's like paying off a credit card with more credit cards and after a while you can't even afford the interest payment. .Nonethless, the Democrats and unions could care less since they think only about "today" while "tomorrow problems" will belong to the next generation.

We could probably save a little money here...

"It looks like employees of the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) might get away with downloading and watching massive amounts of pornography while on the job. When word got out that they were doing this, none of the offenders were fired or even reported to or disciplined by their professional associations.

According to Denver-based attorney Kevin Evans, who sued to have as much information on the incidents as possible released, the majority of the employees involved were attorneys, and none of them was fired or reported to the American Bar Association.

Evans is rankled by the situation because these government employees were watching porn on company time, basically being paid by taxpayers to do it. He says that a private practice attorney who deceitfully billed clients like that would not only be kicked out of the American Bar Association and lose his or her license to practice law, but also could also be indicted and prosecuted for fraud."

Your government at work.

Deficit spending must stop, period!
Inflation via fiat currency is insane, and every intelligent person knows it. Of course, many members of congress are excluded from that class.
The solution is simple: If we must borrow to finance "it"; then we do not do "it".
Many years ago my wife and I agreed never to borrow. We pay cash for what we buy. If we can't cash out something, we don't buy it. Our government must learn to do the same.
The GOP has not begun to learn this fact. Predictably they will compromise with the Dems on insignificant cuts and get voted out en masse. It will be Tea Party or no party

That the GOP leaders plan to forfeit victory to Obama et al in 2012 is evident in their failure to produce a
credible candidate committing to a balanced budget. They, like the Dems, want to buy votes with your savings.
But, if you want your descendants to live enslaved under Sharia to a moslem polity ruled from behind the scenes by an international banking cartel, vote for Obama again, and your wishes will come true.

Both parties need to realize that the voters are watching. And, 2012, is just around the corner. The party that sees the light first and does the right thing for the American People, is the party that will win the next election. Voters are becoming more and more enlightened, even if politicians don't seem to be, and will hold partisan politicians to an accounting. Unfornately politicians of both parties appear to want to toe the same old partisan line, and apparently forget who they work for. This attitude shows up on PD with many of the comments posted. It is a mind set that will bring down America, before our overseas enemies ever do. The budget needs to be balanced. Spending on pork must be stopped, and the economy requires a surge. Only our representatives working together, in a non-partisan manner, can help accomplish this end. As voters, express your views to your Senators, Congress Men/Women, and Local officials. If they can't, or won't, get their act together vote them out.

The Democrats need to refuse to pass anything that doesn't fund the Government until the end of the fiscal year. The Republicans are playing games with the future of this country in order to pacify their rich supporters.

Dear E9: We are broke. We have unfunded liabilities in the dozens of trillions. As we stand now, our country has no future. The dollar is being inflated until no one will have the money to buy anything. Look at post WWI Germany for an example. Postage stamps cost hundreds of millions! How did germany deal with their economic emasculation? They started WWII. Fifty million died. We are close to the same point. We must stop borrowing and learn to live within our means; or perish.

If your officers are killed and you find yourself commanding an infantry company , (perhaps you have been there and done that), you must use what you have to accomplish your mission. You can't just have the company clerk type up a new roster with twice as many names on it, because those names are not real soldiers; just as Bernankes' "dollars" are not real dollars- but worthless IOUs.
The money supply must reflect the supply of real goods and services available. To do so in a stable manner it must be commodity-based; not fiat-based. Please try Ron Pauls "End The Fed" and let us know what you think?
