Robert Byrd. It wasn't the medium that brought Forbes a slew of negative attention, but rather the message. New $10M X Prize Announced for Solution to Gulf Oil Spill Crisis

A mention of the "X Prize" typically conjures up images of experimental, futuristic commercial spacecraft -- particularly the SpaceShipOne, which won the $10 million Ansari X Prize in 2004. But today the X Prize came down to earth. Far down, in fact: below the waters of the gulf, where an estimated 40,000 barrels continue to spew from BP's uncapped well every day. The nonprofit X Prize Foundation -- created by space-age entrepreneur and philanthropist Peter Diamandis -- announced today at the TEDxOilSpill conference that it would be offering a new $10 million bounty "for smart ideas on how ...

Who Will Gov. Manchin Pick to Replace Sen. Byrd?

Although Gov. Joe Manchin of West Virginia is expected to appoint a Democrat to fill Sen. Robert Byrd's seat until the term ends in 2012, his specific plans remain a mystery to countless anxiety-gripped onlookers. (They are expected to be at least partially addressed in a news conference scheduled for 4:30 p.m. Eastern today.) Who will it be? When would he or she start? Answers to those questions are complicated by Virginia's complex Senate vacancy statute, which appears to call for a special election in this case. Yet that appears less likely than a firm appointment, given the fact that no ...

Chris Brown's Re-emergence: The Reviews Are In

Hitmaking R&B singer Chris Brown--lately known better for physically assaulting his ex-girlfriend and fellow pop star Rihanna than his music--made a thoroughly memorable "comeback" appearance at the 2010 BET Awards on Sunday night. (Brown has been keeping a low profile since the news of the incident surfaced in early 2009). Brown's tribute performance of singles by the late Michael Jackson (his self-professed idol) went smoothly until he began "Man in the Mirror," at which point he appeared to become overwhelmed with emotion, breaking down into tears and struggling to choke out the lyrics to ...

Senator Kyl Gives Supervisor Peggy West a Geography Lesson

Quick geography quiz: What borders the state of Arizona? If you answered New Mexico, Utah, Nevada, California, Colorado and the country Mexico, give yourself a pat on the back. All correct! If you forgot about Mexico, you might be inclined to sympathize with Milwaukee County Supervisor Peggy West, who made a very public geographic blunder Thursday when voicing her support of a proposed county boycott of Arizona businesses during a county board meeting. Her opposition (and that of several other county board members) was based on the state's controversial new immigration law, which mandates ...

Petraeus Prepared to 'Modify Rules of Engagement' in Afghanistan

Since General David Petraeus was abruptly appointed to take over the War in Afghanistan on Wednesday, speculation has swirled around how his approach to the increasingly dire conflict would differ from that of his predecessor, disgraced former commander General Stanley McChrystal. Today, we have an answer. An anonymous military source "close to Petraeus" says that "one of the first things the general will do when he takes over in Afghanistan is to modify the controversial rules of engagement to make it easier for U.S. troops to engage in combat with the enemy," reports Fox News. Isner Loses in 74 Minutes After Winning 11-Hour Marathon Match

After winning the match of his life, John Isner's body just couldn't take anymore punishment. The 23rd seeded American lost his second match at Wimbeldon today to unseeded Dutch player Thiemo De Bakker in just 74 minutes and 25 games-- the shortest time for the male's division at the tournament so far. The loss was a bitter one, but not unexpected, seeing as just 21 hours earlier, Isner had finally defeated Frenchman Nicolas Mahut after 11 hours of play in the longest tennis match in history (and much longer than many other historically long endeavors). That match--which began on ...
