During a speech Monday at a Virginia school, President Obama outlined his plan to reboot George W. Bush's "No Child Left Behind" education law, saying he wants to overhaul in place before the start of the next school year. The president's appearance at Kenmore Middle School in Arlington was the latest stop in a campaign to give more education-reform power to state and local governments and improve student performance, The Hill reported Monday. Obama told students that the U.S. economy depends on young people getting an education that leads to a competitive career. "Over the next 10 years, ...
Rep. Gabrielle Giffords continues to make a robust recovery, though she has no memory of being shot, her physicians said Friday. At a news conference at TIRR Memorial Hermann Rehabilitation Hospital in Houston, doctors said the Arizona Democrat is speaking in full sentences and her short-term memory is improving, ABC News reported. "She can repeat anything we say to her. Now, that's an important neurological recovery fact because what that means is that her whole primary language areas are intact," said Dr. Dong Kim. Americans' approval of the job Congress is doing is on the decline again, hitting 18 percent this month after inching above the 20 percent mark in February, according to a new poll out Friday. The Gallup survey found that Congress' approval rating is "essentially back to where it was just after last November's midterm elections." Following a historical trend, voters' approval bumped up slightly when the new Congress took office in January, giving the GOP control of the House. Americans generally feel better about their representatives on Capitol Hill immediately following power shifts. But ...
Opinions fall largely along party lines regarding Rep. Peter King's hearings examining the threat of radical Islam in America, with Republicans much more likely to say they are appropriate, according to a new poll. The USA Today/Gallup survey found that 52 percent of all Americans said they support the New York Republican's exploration of the issue, compared to 69 percent of Republicans. Just 40 percent of Democrats said the hearings are appropriate. Gallup said independents' views were similar to the national average, with 51 percent supporting King. Nearly everyone agrees that Frank Buckles, America's last surviving World War I veteran who died last month at age 110, should be honored. Buckles' passing has been noted by leaders in his home state of West Virginia and nationally. He has been celebrated by veterans' groups, who hail him as the last link to the tens of thousands of dough boys killed in the Great War. A military funeral is planned at Arlington National Cemetery. President Obama ordered flags on federal buildings flown at half-staff on March 15, the day of the burial. Before Buckles is laid to rest at Arlington, however, his ...
Sarah Palin's father says he and his wife have taken to sleeping with guns after the family started receiving death threats. In an interview with BBC News, Chuck Heath said a man recently sent him and his wife, Sally, photocopies of a receipt for a gun he had bought, along with with a photocopy of a one-way ticket to Alaska. The man was later arrested by the FBI, but Palin's father said the incident rattled the family. "We sleep with the guns," Chuck Heath said in the interview at his home in Wasilla, Alaska, where Sarah Palin was mayor. Palin's mother, Sally Heath, admitted to the BBC ...
Vincent Gray, mayor of Washington, D.C., is denying allegations by a former mayoral candidate -- and later an administration employee -- who says he was paid to ramp up attacks on then-mayor Adrian Fenty during last year's campaign. At a weekend press conference, however, the mayor acknowledged his administration "made missteps" in the way it vetted candidates for jobs, The Washington Post reported Monday. "We have taken steps to address those missteps," Gray said Sunday, without providing details. The allegations come from Sulaimon Brown, who was hired at the city's Department of Health ...
As the standoff over Wisconsin's budget bill continues, Gov. Scott Walker notified state unions Friday that he will order layoffs if his measure isn't passed within 15 days. Walker's warning did not specify how many people could lose their jobs. On Thursday the governor said pink slips could be sent to up to 1,500 state workers. Under Walker's plan, individual employees would get termination notices in 15 days, and the layoffs would occur in early April, according to Milwaukee's Journal Sentinel. The National Rifle Association says it has Sarah Palin to thank for a 20 percent jump in female membership. Calling it the "Palin effect," the NRA's Diane Danielson told the Daily Mail that the former Alaska governor's vocal advocacy of gun rights is helping the group teach "10,000 new women a year to shoot, and making more girls want to take up hunting." Palin, the GOP vice presidential nominee in 2008, has bragged about her ability to field dress a moose and was often seen hunting on her reality television show. "Firearm manufacturers are gearing their products towards women. ...
Sen. Tom Coburn (R-Okla.) spoke privately with Senate investigators looking into Sen. John Ensign's affair with a former staffer, Politico reported Thursday. The news of Coburn's conversation with members of the Senate Ethics Committee is the first information about the Ensign probe since the panel appointed a special counsel, Carol Elder Bruce, last month. Coburn and the Nevada Republican are longtime friends. Politico said Coburn's appearance before the panel took place "recently." Ensign has not yet been interviewed by ethics investigators. He is being investigated over his ...
