Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-Nev.) has officially declared his support for changing current Massachusetts law in order to quickly fill Sen. Ted Kennedy's vacated seat. As I wrote a few days back, an ailing Kennedy penned a letter urging Massachusetts lawmakers and Gov. Duval Patrick to amend the process that had last been changed in 2004. Reid's spokesman, Jim Manley, described the majority leader's rationale: While it is ultimately up to the people of Massachusetts and their representatives at the State House to decide this matter, Senator Reid agrees with Senator Kennedy and Gov. ...
A new InsiderAdvantage poll finds that 49.5 percent of South Carolina's registered voters think it is time for their embattled governor, Mark Sanford, to resign. The poll showed 36.6 percent believe he should stay put. Republican support has eroded for Sanford since he revealed his protracted affair with an Argentine woman, and ethical questions have emerged about his taxpayer-funded travel. Only 47.1 percent of GOP voters now say Sanford should stay in office. Calls from other elected officials for Sanford to resign continue to mount. On Wednesday, the state's lieutenant governor, Andre ...
The Federal Deposit Insurance Fund, which insures the bulk of deposits in American banks, is now at a 16-year low, having declined 20 percent in the second quarter of 2009. So says an F.D.I.C. accounting report released Thursday. Bank failures have continued at a rapid pace this year -- 81 so far -- as years of deregulated lending practices and risky investment strategies come home to roost. In part, credit remains hard to obtain because of how easily it was offered before last fall's financial crash. Just how many more banks will fail this year is a question that remains to be answered. But ...
The Boston Globe reports that President Obama will deliver a eulogy at Senator Edward Kennedy's funeral on Saturday at The Basilica of Our Lady of Perpetual Help in Boston. The service will be invitation only, but is certain to be broadcast to the nation. Kennedy endorsed Obama at a key juncture of the '08 Democratic primary, just before Super Tuesday, and the two men were quite close from their time together in the Senate. Following Saturday's ceremony, Kennedy's casket will proceed via motorcade to Logan Airport and then be flown to Washington D.C. Kennedy will be buried at Arlington ...
The garage sale is a tried and true method of raising some quick cash while clearing out the clutter that accumulates over the years. Both birds are the targets of the latest stone being thrown by the Golden State as it combats budgetary woes: The first ever "Great California Garage Sale" will be held Friday and Saturday in Sacramento. Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger announced the event, and has advertised some of its offerings, on eBay and Craigslist: "By posting items online, Californians and people from other states and around the world can participate in the Great California Garage Sale. This ...
Does Barack Obama, the duly elected president of the United States, respect the Constitution? For many of Obama's critics, the answer is a resounding "No!" What evidence do the holders of this opinion put forth to defend it? Some argue the president has not provided a valid birth certificate. Others believe that he is overstepping the framers' intent by attempting to set up a government-funded health care plan. For many more, it's just a nagging suspicion born of cable television punditry and common sense. Witness footage from earlier Tuesday when Sen. John McCain (R-Ariz.), Obama's former ...
Former Alaska Governor Sarah Palin has been spending a lot of time on Facebook lately. She has built up an impressive list of some 825,000 supporters, and has released scathing attacks on President Obama's proposed heath care legislation. It was in one now-famous "note" to her fans in which Palin first wrote of the so-called "death panels" contained in the legislation, a claim that was quickly debunked by dozens of media outlets and watchdog organizations. Americans United for Change, a group lobbying for health care reform, has decided to confront Sarah Palin on her new favorite social ...
Though overall unemployment figures dropped nationally from 9.5 percent in June to 9.4 percent in July, the Department of Labor reported on Friday that the number of states with double-digit jobless rates now totals 15. Oddly, they all reside on the same part of the map: North Dakota: ...
Public Policy Polling has replicated the same result for the past five months: On the question of which Republican would do the best against President Obama in a hypothetical race for the presidency in 2012, former-Arkansas-governor-turned-talk-show-host Mike Huckabee makes the strongest showing. Here's how the latest numbers break down for each potential face-off: Barack Obama 47 Barack Obama 47 Barack Obama 49 Barack Obama 52 These polls are simply snapshots along the ever-winding road that leads to the primaries and the general election beyond, but it's interesting that Huckabee has ...
Mexican President Felipe Calderon has signed into law a bill passed by the country's congress last spring. The new measure decriminalizes possession of small amounts of marijuana, cocaine, LSD, methamphetamines and heroin, setting limits for what constitutes "personal use" quantities. At the same time, it provides free treatment for those with drug addiction. The hope is that the law will distinguish casual users from addicts. Before, those arrested for drug possession -- even for small amounts -- were handed long jail terms. Studies show that drug use is on the rise in Mexico, calling into ...
