Lance Armstrong Says 2010 Tour de France Will Be His Last

One final time up and down the Pyrenees and through the Arc de Triomphe. Today Lance Armstrong made it official: The 2010 Tour de France will be his last. Armstrong has won cycling's premier road race a record seven times. After a four-year hiatus from the tour, he finished third in a return to the sport that many found improbable. Armstrong, 38, announced his decision to make 2010 his last Tour de France on his Twitter feed, where he wrote: And yes, this will be final Tour de France. It's been a great ride. Looking forward to 3 great weeks. In the Tour de California, a warm-up for the ...

If you have diabetes and are thinking about taking the insulin-alternative drug Avandia, you may want to consider the ever-growing list of possible side effects. Two new studies out this week show that use of Avandia, whose generic name is rosiglitazone, can lead to increased risk of heart attacks, stroke and heart failure. Manufactured by GlaxoSmithKline, Avandia has a history of rather glaring side effects. As the Los Angeles Times reported shortly after it appeared on the market, Avandia has been linked to increased incidence of bone fractures, as well as heart failure and heart attack. ...

According to the D.O.J., eight of the accused were involved in what it termed as "long-term, deep-cover assignments" for the Russian government. Two of the defendants were arrested for participating in the covert Russian operation. Nine of those picked up were charged with conspiracy to ...

Rodolfo Torre, Mexican Candidate for Governor, Assassinated

Mexico's ruthless drug cartels are suspected in the shooting death of Rodolfo Torre, the front-runner in this coming Sunday's gubernatorial election in the Mexican border state of Tamaulipas. Torre was killed along with four other people, and Mexico's interior secretary quickly placed the blame on Mexico's increasingly violent drug lords, The Associated Press reported. Located on the Gulf of Mexico, the state of Tamaulipas borders Texas, including the U.S. city of Brownsville. June has proven an especially deadly month in Mexico's war against the drug cartels, with hundreds reported dead. ...

Waves From Hurricane Alex Could Send Fresh Oil Onto Florida Beaches

Tropical Storm Alex is expected to be upgraded to hurricane status over the next day or so. With its higher winds, the storm will also generate bigger waves, some of which are forecast to roll across the Gulf of Mexico toward Florida. In today's Pensacola News Journal, that prospect is just the latest cause for concern for local residents. Florida Department of Emergency Management meteorologist Amy Godsey said rough waves churned by the storm will disrupt efforts to corral and burn surface oil and will likely push more oil and tar onto Panhandle beaches throughout the week. As the ...

Gun Stocks Jump as Supreme Court Nixes Chicago Handgun Law

America's gun makers rejoiced at the news that the U.S. Supreme court overturned Chicago's handgun ban on Monday. After all, the ruling means millions more potential customers for their wares. At present, Chicago does not have even a single gun store within the city limits. That will surely change in the coming months. Until then, residents will soon be free to purchase handguns from neighboring counties and states and bring them back home to the windy city, a fact not lost on Wall Street investors. In mid-day trading, shares of Smith & Wesson were up 3.66 percent. Sturm, Ruger & Co. ...

NOAA Charts Path of Storm That Could Become Tropical Storm Alex

At 6 p.m. Friday, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration officially identified the first tropical depression of the 2010 hurricane season. If, as is likely, the winds of the storm intensify, it will be labeled Tropical Storm Alex. Currently, wind speeds for Tropical Depression 1 have been measured at 35 mph. At 39 mph or greater, a tropical depression is reclassified as a tropical storm. Along with the tropical depression moniker, the storm now also has a projected path that shows it heading over the Yucatan Peninsula and back out into the Gulf of Mexico. As seen in ...

Viral Video: 'Mommy Get the Oil Off!'

This was the week that oil came to Florida's beaches. On Wednesday, Pensacola Beach was blackened with oil. Nearby Destin Beach, which had largely been spared the outward effects of BP's downed Deepwater Horizon rig, was also stung with the realization that it could no longer claim its sands were free of oil. Perhaps no single piece of video captured that turn of fortune better than the following YouTube clip, in which a little girl playing on the shore steps in the toxic, oily muck and cries, "Mommy, get the oil off!" While cleanup crews have been dispatched to Pensacola and Destin, ...

Tropical Storm Alex May Form at Any Moment in Gulf, NOAA Says

Word from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration is that the first Atlantic tropical storm of the season could officially be declared on Friday. If it does, it will be named Tropical Storm Alex. "The Air Force is flying planes into the system right now," NOAA spokesman Chris Vaccaro told Surge Desk. "They'll crisscross the storm, and drop a variety of instruments into it to measure things like wind speed, pressure, and humidity." On its website, NOAA has been posting regular updates on the formation of the storm, and Vaccaro said that after it hears back from the Air Force ...

Tropical Storm Forming in Gulf Could Disrupt Oil Spill Effort

According to the National Hurricane Center, there is an 80 percent chance that a low-pressure system in the southern Gulf of Mexico will form into a storm over the next 48 hours. If it does, and that storm follows a projected path northward toward the Gulf Coast of the United States, oil spill containment efforts will be thrown into disarray. On its website, NOAA said the following about the as-yet-unnamed storm: An air force reconnaissance plane is currently approaching the system to determine if a tropical depression has formed. Regardless ... upper level winds are becoming more ...
