Arne Duncan Helps Students Put Best Foot Forward in School Walk

Education Secretary Arne Duncan, Washington Mayor Adrian Fenty, Washington Chancellor of Schools Michelle Rhee and Federal Highway Administrator Victor Mendez helped more than 100 students start the second day of school Tuesday -- with a walk. The two-block walk to Maury Elementary School in Washington promoted the Transportation Department's Safe Routes to School program, in which more than 6,000 schools participate nationwide. English Majors as Math Teachers: In Some Schools, That's How It Has to Be

Last year, Cary Wright graduated with a bachelor's degree in English. This month, the Teach for America corps member starts his second year as a fifth-grade teacher. But Wright doesn't teach English; he teaches math. Founded in 1990, Teach for America selects, trains and places recent college graduates as teachers in low-income communities. Arne Duncan: Bullying in Schools Is a 'Gateway to Hate'

The Department of Education hosted its first conference on bullying Wednesday, adding the issue to a steadily growing list of education priorities for the Obama administration. Speaking the day after President Obama approved billions of dollars to fund teachers in cash-strapped states, Education Secretary Arne Duncan said bullying is a school safety issue that must be resolved. Eighteen States, D.C. are Finalists for Race to the Top Education Money

Eighteen states and the District of Columbia will vie for $3.4 billion as finalists in the second round of Race to the Top, the Obama administration's competitive program to encourage states to implement its education reform initiatives. Whittled down from 36 applications, the finalists in round two include all of the previous finalists minus Delaware and Tennessee, winners of the last round of grants.
