George W. Bush: 'What Do You Do?'

    By Jay Allbritton

Since leaving office, former President Bush's approval rating has climbed 6 points in one recent poll, something many in the media have attributed to his low profile since leaving office. Of course, former Vice President Cheney's approval rating is up too, and he's been very vocal. It's more likely that Bush and Cheney's approval ratings are up because they really couldn't go down, and since they're not in power, the negative media coverage that comes with a failed presidency has abated. Bush, who still has a 57% unfavorable rating, has decided to take a couple small steps back into the ...

Obama Picks Former Astronaut to Head NASA

    By Jay Allbritton

Earlier today President Barack Obama picked former astronaut Charles Bolden to head NASA. As an astronaut, Bolden made four trips into space, commanding two of those missions. At the age of 62, Bolden will become the first African American and the second astronaut to to lead the space agency, assuming Senate confirmation. The Orlando Sentinel's Mark Matthews reports that Bolden may run into issues stemming from his previous employment at two companies that have ties to Constellation, a program likely to replace the space shuttle. "If Bolden is unable to deal with Constellation decisions ...

Suddenly Arlen Specter Looks Like a Loyal Democrat

    By Jay Allbritton

During an appearance on Meet the Press earlier this month in the wake of his dramatic party switch, Arlen Specter repeatedly denied telling President Obama that he would be a "loyal Democrat". Specter initially looked intent on maintaining his independence from his new party. He voted against Obama's budget. He maintained that he would not vote to end debate on EFCA and he said he remained opposed to the confirmation of Dawn Johnsen to head the Justice Department's Office of Legal Counsel. Now that a little time has gone by, Specter looks like he's starting what some thought would be an ...

Florida Democrat Alex Sink Running For Governor

    By Jay Allbritton

When Florida's Governor Charlie Crist announced his run for Senate yesterday, he left the race to succeed him wide open. One day later, Florida's popular Democratic Chief Financial Officer Alex Sink has announced that she is jumping into the race. Sink was once considered the strongest potential Democratic challenger for retiring Republican Mel Martinez's Senate seat before she took her name out of consideration in January. If she wins, and according to the Sun-Sentinel she has already raised more than $1.1 million, Sink would be the first woman to serve as the state's governor. In her ...

Report: Florida Governor Charlie Crist to Run for Senate

    By Jay Allbritton

When Pennsylvania Senator Arlen Specter switched parties late last month, part of his rationale for becoming a Democrat was that moderate Republicans in Congress were a dying breed. It looks like Florida Governor Charlie Crist will try to buck that trend by running for retiring Republican Senator Mel Martinez's open seat in 2010. CNN reports that Crist is close to announcing a run for Senate, perhaps early next week. Crist's popularity in Florida would save the Republicans from having to pour money into any campaign mounted by a less popular state politician. Former Governor Jeb Bush, who ...

John Edwards Acknowledges Federal Investigation Into Campaign Spending

    By Jay Allbritton

Former presidential candidate John Edwards issued a statement acknowledging that federal investigators are looking into how his campaign spent some of its money. The investigation is likely focused on money Edwards's political action committee paid to his mistress, Rielle Hunter. In his statement, Edwards said, "I am confident that no funds from my campaign were used improperly. However, I know that it is the role of government to ensure that this is true." Edwards is cooperating with the investigation. In 2006, Hunter's firm was paid $100,000 for video production. She received an additional ...

Appeals Court Rejects Obama Administration's State Secrets Claim in Extraordinary Rendition Case

    By Jay Allbritton

In February, civil libertarians were shocked when the The Obama Administration argued the same position as the Bush Administration in the case of Mohamed et al v. Jeppesen Dataplan, Inc. The five men who brought the suit claim to have been victims of extraordinary rendition. At the time, Bush administration attorneys managed to get the case was thrown out, claiming national security concerns. Today the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit unanimously rejected the Obama administration's claim of national security. The ruling stipulated that the federal government could not assert a ...

Poll Shows 29 Percent Find Fox News Too Hard On Obama

    By Jay Allbritton

A new poll from The Pew Research Center measuring which networks people believe to be too critical of the President shows that 29 percent of Americans picked Fox News Channel. Not surprisingly, 44 percent of Democrats polled found Fox to be unfair to Obama, while only 18 percent of Republicans see it that way. The pollsters also asked which network had been too easy on the President. Despite the presence of openly liberal programming, such as Ed Shultz, Keith Olbermann and Rachel Maddow, dominating MSNBC's evening and prime time line up, CNN was found to be just as easy on Obama as MSNBC, with ...

    Congress Prepares Environmental, Energy Legislation

    By Jay Allbritton

This week Congress will hold hearings on energy policy and construct a bill intended to mitigate the effects of global warming. Potential legislation would be the first major environmental protection mandated by Congress in nearly two decades. Republicans generally oppose any kind of global warming legislation. If the bill stalls, the Obama administration has expressed willingness to use clean air laws as a means of instituting new regulations that would reduce the release of climate-changing pollution. The climate change legislation is made more urgent by a report issued Friday by the ...

Eliot Spitzer Plans Run For New York State Attorney General?

    By Jay Allbritton

When former New York Governor Eliot Spitzer appeared on the Today Show earlier this month (video here), it seemed clear that at the very least he was working on rehabilitating his public image a year after a prostitution scandal forced him from office. According to a report in the New York Post's Page Six Spitzer has his sights set a bit higher than simply improving his image, he has his sights set on returning to elected office. In fact, sources told Page Six that Spitzer wants back the job that launched him to national prominence, New York State Attorney General. He would reportedly run for ...
