Campus Day of Action: Will Protest Problems Impede Movement for Change?

In the late '60s, as violent protesters ravaged the campuses of the University of California, Republican gubernatorial candidate Ronald Reagan vowed to do something about it. A short time into Reagan's first term as governor, there were eight bombings or attempted bombings at the Berkeley campus alone over an eleven-month period. More than 200 firearms were confiscated as well as almost 1000 sticks of dynamite. Rioters at one point trampled a line of police officers, sending 47 of them to the hospital. "There were undoubtedly well-meaning students caught up in the demonstrations who thought ...

Ohio Job and Poll Numbers Against Him, Governor Ted Strickland Makes His Case

Ohio governor Ted Strickland recently gave his last State of the State address before facing a difficult 2010 re-election bid, emphasizing the state's potential for reinvention and growth despite its budget shortfall and 10.9 percent December unemployment rate. Strickland pledged renewal of the Third Frontier Program in 2010, a technology industry-building initiative first conceived under Republican Gov. Bob Taft. "And you have my word on this: I will move heaven and earth to create jobs in Ohio, and I will not rest until it's done," Strickland said. Republicans complained that the speech ...

McCartney's Meat Free Mondays: Letting a Few Bad Apples Kill the Entire Tree

Paul McCartney has backed a campaign that calls for people to give up meat one day a week. Meat Free Mondays, the well-known vegetarian suggests, will help reduce livestock greenhouse gas emissions and help feed impoverished nations. McCartney made his case to the European Parliament earlier this month, meeting in Brussels with Rajendra K. Pachauri, head of the United Nations' global climate change panel. Production of food accounts for 20 to 30 percent of global greenhouse gas emissions, he said, and livestock production is responsible for around half of these emissions. Some members of the ...

Student Protests Erupt in California as Regents Raise Tuition 32 Percent

Hundreds of students from around the state converged on the University of California-Los Angeles this week to protest a vote there by state regents Thursday to raise tuition 32 percent to combat major cuts in state funding. Rallying outside UCLA's Covel Commons, where the regents held a three-day meeting, demonstrators beat drums, chanted and carried signs that said "R.I.P. Our Future." On Wednesday, 14 protesters were arrested -- 12 of them students. The next afternoon, after the vote for the tuition hike, students linked arms in an attempt to block the regents from leaving the building, ...

Student Gambling Grows: Should Schools Come to the Table?

At one college, a 21-year-old student became so addicted to playing online poker that she pushed just about everything -- including friends and schoolwork -- out of her life. "I kept on playing so I wouldn't have to look at what poker had done to my bank account, my relationships, my life." Her example is just one of many included in a report by the Task Force on College Gambling Policies. Researchers cited in the report estimate that three to 11 percent of college students in the United States have a serious gambling problem that can result in psychological difficulties, unmanageable debt ...

Young Fort Hood Soldier Reacts: 'I Wanted To Cry, But I Couldn't'

Glen Jolivette, 19, of Coshocton, Ohio, had the day off from his job as an Army signal support systems specialist at Ft. Hood last Thursday when the accused gunman, Maj. Nidal Malik Hasan, started shooting. "I found out about everything going on over a public announcement system," Jolivette said. "It said word for word, 'Seek shelter immediately, close all doors and windows, make sure all ventilation is closed.'" Looking out the window of his room, he saw about a dozen civilian helicopters in the sky. He got on the Internet and found out what had happened. As he refreshed the page, the death ...

We're ALL Reporters, and We've Redefined News

Associated Press's decision to release a photo of a mortally wounded soldier last month drew criticism from many Americans, including service veterans and Defense Secretary Robert Gates, who, in a scathing letter to the AP's top editor, called the move "appalling." While the photo is graphic, it helps to accurately depict a tragic story in a war filled with violence and death. "AP journalists document world events every day. Afghanistan is no exception," Santiago Lyon, the AP's director of photography, told Politico. "We feel it is our journalistic duty to show the reality of the war there, ...

Beer Maker's New 'Fan Cans' Ale College Officials

If you have consumed alcohol in your lifetime (which I'm sure you haven't unless you're of legal age, right?) and are a rambunctiously loyal student or faithful alum of a school with athletic prowess, you might be excited to learn that Bud Light is going to look a lot more, dare I say, "cooler" soon. ...

Sen. Sherrod Brown (D-Ohio) has held several events with his constituents over summer break, including a roundtable discussion in Cambridge, Ohio, that I attended with administrators and health officials from various hospitals in southeastern Ohio. One of the first issues the senator raised was about requiring young people to purchase health insurance. ...
