Tropical Storm Alex has weakened to a tropical depression during its trip over the Yucatan Peninsula, but the reduction in strength will be temporary. It appears as if Alex is destined to become the first Atlantic basin hurricane of the season, and while Alex will not directly affect the area of the gulf with the oil spill, it will become a formidable storm.

Despite earlier predictions, Tropical Storm Alex is not expected to directly hit the region of the Gulf of Mexico affected by the oil spill.

Tropical Storm Alex, the first named storm of the 2010 Atlantic basin hurricane season, has formed in the northwestern Caribbean. The storm will bring heavy rain and wind to parts of Central America, the Yucatan Peninsula and western Caribbean islands this weekend and will likely redevelop in the southern Gulf of Mexico next week, possibly becoming the first hurricane of the season.
