Stimulus! 'Obama Burgers' Selling Like Hotcakes at Five Guys

As I reported yesterday, Barack Obama's burger jaunt was cause for inter-network sparring, but for the burger joint in question, everything's coming up roses...or should I say, O'ses. (Sorry, that was my homework for Local TV News Copy 101.)According to a source at the Five Guys Restaurant, the President's visit has resulted in a more-than-doubling of business, and "everybody wants the 'Obama Burger.'" They even had to stay open last night to satisfy the demand. The "Obama Burger" is the unofficial (for now) designation for a cheesburger with lettuce, tomato, mustard, and jalapenos. There was ...

Feud Breaks Out Over President Obama's Cheeseburger Field Trip

As Patricia Murphy noted earlier, President Obama dropped in on the Five Guys Restaurant today for some rapid nourishment (video here). He was accompanied by an NBC News film crew. The subject of the President's trip came up at today's White House Press Briefing, where CBS' Mark Knoller cast a suspicious eye at the "day in the life" burger run, prompting a quick rejoinder from NBC's Chuck Todd:Here's the video of the President's visit to Five Guys: ...

Conspiracy to Close Dissident Car Dealers Mocked by White House, Debunked by Blog

At yesterday's White House Press Briefing, Robert Gibbs fielded a question from Major Garrett about a blog-launched conspiracy theory that suggested that the Obama administration had exercised it's authority to shut down car dealers who disagree with the President. Gibbs answered the question, and in the process, took a shot at blogs as news sources:Gibbs needn't have answered like that, since another blog, Nate Silver's 538.com, handily debunked the story. Still, I wish Gibbs had responded to Garrett by saying, "Let me go talk it over with my Sales Manager..."The theory was that a large ...

Rush Limbaugh Compared to Jesus... Christ, That is

Maybe I fell asleep that day in Sunday school. Politico and Crooks and Liars note that Redstate Chief Erick Erickson sees divinity in conservative radio host Rush Limbaugh: Peter, under pressure and fear, denied Christ not just once, but three times. Peter, though, feared death. The strain on Peter was great. The rest of us, though, typically fear the opinions of others. There are those who like it when we feel guilty for associating with someone. More troubling, in the conservative movement and in the greater right-of-center coalition, there are many, many fellow traveler who would rather ...

Reporter Detained Near Air Force One Claims Gift of Prophecy, Healing

Brenda Lee, a reporter claiming to have White House credentials, was forcibly removed from a secure area at LAX after she tried to give the President a letter yesterday urging him to take a stand for "traditional marriage":"I said, 'I'll take my chances if (the president) comes by here,'" said Lee. "He became annoyed that I wouldn't give him the letter." Lee said she protested when she was asked to leave. "I said, 'Why are you bothering me?' They escorted me outside the gate," she said. She said security officers allowed her to return when she promised she would not yell or wave, but then ...

White House Press Briefing: Strike 3 on Don't Ask, Don't Tell

At today's White House Press Briefing, Robert Gibbs was asked, again, about "Don't ask/Don't tell" at the top of the briefing, and again said that the President was "working with the Joint Chiefs, the Pentagon and others (previously, he's said "congress") to bring about a change in that policy."Given the news that Congress doesn't seem to have gotten that memo, I followed up with Gibbs about the lack of urgency: (CSpan had the wrong video, here's the full briefing. Check the 34:30 mark)I will get into this a little more deeply later, but suffice it to say I am deeply disappointed in how the ...

Discharged Arabic Linguist Dan Choi Among Protesters at Obama Fundraiser

Lt. Dan Choi, the first soldier discharged under "Don't ask/Don't tell" during the Obama administration, was among protesters at a DNC fundraiser headlined by President Obama: Protest organizers called for Obama to repeal the government's "don't ask, don't tell" policy that exempts openly gay men and women from serving in the military. Lt. Dan Choi, a West Point graduate and an Arabic translator, was discharged from the Army when he declared he was gay on national television. His conviction that the military's policy is "a deadly poison" inspired him to lead the protest on Wednesday. Here's ...

Bi-Partisan Challenge to Prop 8 Filed in Federal Court is the Right Move

The opposing lawyers from the famously divisive Bush v. Gore case have joined forces to bring gay and straight Americans together: (From The Advocate)In a bold move that takes a new approach to achieving marriage equality, two attorneys who argued opposing sides of the 2000 Bush v. Gore lawsuit before the U.S. Supreme Court have filed a challenge to Proposition 8 in federal court, The Advocate has learned....The attorneys argue that relegating same-sex couples to domestic partnerships instead of granting them full marriage rights is a violation of the equal protection and due process clauses ...

Sonia Sotomayor 'Reversal Rate' Attack Debunked

There was some general chatter on Twitter yesterday about heaps of Supreme Court nominee Sonia Sotomayor's cases being overturned by the high court. I turned up a link to a CNN story that listed her cases that had been reviewed by the Supreme Court. It sure looked damning, but I immediately figured that this was one of those deceptive things, like how most car accidents occur within 2 miles of your house. (That's where most of your driving is done.) I was talking with a lawyer friend about it this morning, and suggested that the reversal rate was probably not atypical, and tied to the court's ...
