We've all done things we'd sooner forget than acknowledge. Some of us might have shot off our mouths when we were on the sauce. Others might have a few run-ins with ol' Johnny Law. Still others have accepted cabinet positions we didn't want and then sheepishly backed away.

For those of you in that last category, we suggest you follow the example of Sen. Judd Gregg (R-NH), who boldly brushed aside his sordid past yesterday by stabbing his would-be-future-boss in the proverbial groin...

New Hampshire Sen. Judd Gregg-- the ranking Republican on the Senate Budget Committee who initially accepted being President Obama's Commerce Secretary before withdrawing-- called the administration's budget outline "a half-hearted attempt" to reduce the deficits and "missed opportunity" to take the country in a fiscally sound direction...

Gregg also challenged Obama's stated desire to reign in government spending, asking in his statement "Where is the spending restraint? Instead, government spending continues to grow and expand."

You know, it's funny. That article we just quoted mentioned that Sen. Gregg was Obama's nominee for Commerce Secretary, but neither one of us could remember anything about that. Surely that was a typo. Gregg was so forceful about Obama's "half-hearted attempt" that clearly there was no way such a thing ever happened. And yet, the more we think about it... naaww.

Not to be outdone in the "burying past transgressions" category, Gregg's fellow would-be Commerce Secretary Bill Richardson not only announced he disliked Obama's budget, but he also informed the Kansas City Athletics that he'd be entering the Hall of Fame as a Yankee.

He was referring to just-withdrawn Bill Richardson, but since then, he's lost another nominee in Judd Gregg. Now, the race is on to see who gets seated first, the pup or the C-sec.

Michelle Obama tells People Magazine about the pooch timetable after spring break in April), plus some of the names they've been kicking around:
"Oh, the names are really bad. I don't even want to mention it, because there are names floating around and they're bad," Mrs. Obama says with a laugh. "You listen and you go - like, I think, Frank was one of them. Frank! Moose was another one of them. Moose. I said, well, what if the dog isn't a moose? Moose. I'm like, no, come on, let's work with the names a little bit."
I have to give the First Lady credit for not saying the real reason that Moose was a no-go, which is that they'd have to hide the dog whenever Sarah Palin was around. var gaJsHost = (("https:" == document.location.protocol) ? Or maybe, she means a water hound that rescues people. If it's a rescued dog they want, maybe they're being a little too specific.
"Senator Gregg is now the leading candidate for commerce and a pick that could come as early as Monday," a senior administration official said, speaking on condition of anonymity because a formal announcement had not been made.

Mr. Gregg's name has been circulated for several days as Mr. Obama tries to replace his previous nominee for commerce secretary, Gov. Bill Richardson of New Mexico, who withdrew amid revelations that a grand jury is investigating how he awarded state government contracts. Mr. Gregg himself said on Friday that he was under consideration.
This could be a nice win-win for Obama and the Democrats, burnishing Obama's bipartisan bona fides as he tries to gain support from GOP Senators for his stimulus bill, while giving the Democrats a shot at a filibuster-proof majority. The pick is, however, a blow to Wheel of Fortune finalists and Americans with less than two first names.

I think the 60 vote threshold is overrated. The Republicans are currently in a tough spot, loath to filibuster and take ownership of the economic crisis, yet needing to show they can oppose Obama when they think it's called for. How many bills will pass with a 58-41 straight up-or-down vote before their base sees the hollowness of that opposition?
var gaJsHost = (("https:" == document.location.protocol) ? He has a reputation as a true sports fan, so this perplexed me. My favorite team is the Jets, and my 2nd favorite team is whatever team is kicking the crap out of the Patriots.

See, real sports fans don't have second favorite teams.

The silver lining here is that I've found common ground between Barack Obama and my conservative pal, Caleb Howe. It is human nature for many to hope for the best, and to downplay (or cover up) the worst.

By the way, this is one reason I've always thought that, despite claims to the contrary, there might be something embarrassing to come out of the Blago/Rahm Emanuel phone conversations. Why would Rahm tell Obama if he, in fact, had said something embarrassing?

Regardless, the Richardson story isn't likely to hurt Obama. First, despite his help to Obama during the campaign, he was only going to be Commerce Secretary. Second, by quickly stepping down, he has probably ensured the story will go away quickly.

On the other hand, this is one more reminder that the Democrats, who criticized the Republicans' "culture of corruption" are slowly beginning to accumulate a "Hall of Shame" of their own...

Permalink | Email this | Linking Blogs | Comments

Bill Richardson Reportedly Stonewalled Obama Vetters

Filed under: Democrats, Barack Obama, Bill Richardson, Scandal, Obama Administration
As we reported yesterday, New Mexico Governor Bill Richardson has withdrawn himself as Secretary of Commerce-Designate, citing an ongoing federal pay-to-play investigation. Richardson said that he expected to be cleared, but wanted to avoid a delay in the confirmation process.

Politico is reporting, now, that Obama's vetting team had pressed the governor and his office about the investigation, but got nowhere:
Barack Obama's transition team pressed Bill Richardson about a federal probe into "pay-to-play" allegations against his office - the same investigation Richardson cited Sunday in withdrawing his name as commerce secretary.

But a Democratic source said Obama's questioners came away empty handed. "Those guys were pressed for information and they gave nothing," the source said.

Now some Democrats are questioning Obama's vetting process -- and asking whether Obama's team went far enough in pushing the New Mexico governor for information in face of the federal grand jury probe that has been public since August.
And so, it begins. Bill Richardson's descent toward a close-up view of the undercarriage of "the bus."

Some may find it fitting that Richardson be thrown under the bus, since he threw Hillary Clinton under the bus. She has since emerged from under the bus, and is presumably having the last laugh now. I get paid extra every time I say "the bus." The bus.

Richardson's withdrawal is typical of the hyper-sensitive Obama team, which saw many high-profile resignations during the campaign when it appeared that someone could become a distraction. (or words to that effect.) Then, I wondered if this was stage 1 of a Tecumseh-style curse against the enemies of Hillary Clinton.

Richardson, you may recall, was dubbed "Judas" by Hillary loyalist James Carville, which Richardson then whined about, only to have Carville rub it in a little more. His offense? Endorsing Barack Obama, despite a longstanding personal and professional relationship with the Clintons.

If there is a curse, it may have started with Caroline Kennedy, perhaps the 2nd most-hated Democrat in PUMA-land, the bunker for Hillary loyalists. While some are reporting her as the favorite to replace Hillary in the Senate, there has been tremendous blowback that will be damaging to many if she doesn't get it.

So, who's next to befall misfortune? It's hard to say, but Democrats like Howard Dean and Nancy Pelosi, who chose sides against Hillary, might want to get some necklaces of garlic, or holy water, or at least practice making a cross with their fingers. var gaJsHost = (("https:" == document.location.protocol) ? This is what anyone would say in this situation for sure, but Barack Obama has a tendency to err on the side of caution with these jettisonings, so Richardson could very well be cleared in this.

Permalink | Email this | Linking Blogs | Comments

Obama's First Corruption Casualty - Bill Richardson

Filed under: Democrats, Bill Richardson, Obama Administration

Today, Barack Obama's nominee for Secretary of Commerce, Bill Richardson, removed himself from consideration due to an ongoing federal investigation into possible public corruption.

Bill Richardson announced he intends to remain as Governor of New Mexico. Obama released a statement saying he looks forward to Richardson's service as a Governor and within his administration.

At present, it is believed that Richardson's removal as Commerce Secretary nominee is only because the FBI cannot speed up an investigation involving allegations of public contracts given special preference by Richardson to his campaign donors. This storyline assumes Richardson is Innocent and it is only a matter of time before being cleared.

Politically, it's a good opportunity for Obama to re-balance his team. He could add another woman to the post, previously Michigan Governor Jennifer Granholm (D) had been mentioned for this post. Or any other talent set or demographic that seems lacking.

One does wonder at the incompetence displayed by Obama transition team in picking someone under a federal investigation. The investigation became public in August, 2008. "Change" stumbles out of the gate.

Permalink | Email this | Linking Blogs | Comments

Whiner of the Year

Filed under: Hillary Clinton, Democrats, Republicans, Bill Richardson
There's no shortage of contenders for this award, but I've narrowed it down to these finalists, who will be given a choice of cheddar or gruyere:

Harriet Christian (and PUMA): The heroine of the PUMA movement to make Hillary Clinton supporters look as foolish as possible, Harriet made whining history with her racially tinged diatribe at the DNC's Rules and Bylaws Committee meeting. Compare and contrast:

Before and After:

The president-elect thinks Richardson should never have shaved it off:

"I think it was a mistake for him to get rid of it," the president-elect said. "I thought that the whole western, rugged look was really working for him. For some reason, maybe because it was scratchy when he kissed his wife, he was forced to get rid of it. But we're deeply disappointed with the lost of his beard."

Would Obama have offered the Commerce post to Bill if he'd known the beard would go bye-bye? Will the scruff start returning to Richardson's cheeks? Have your say, America:

View Poll

Apparently, just as it was back in the 60's, growing a beard remains a form of protest. Here's Richardson on why he initially went from boy scout to outlaw biker:

"After the campaign, I grew a beard as a rebelion against those consultants who told me I had to comb my hair, shave, lose weight. I said, 'You know, I'm gonna do what I want now."

So why, oh why did Richardson sell out again to the man and his razor? For that matter, why did Al Gore give up his Cheeks of Darkness, grown during his Conradian journey up river following his loss to W. in 2000? So many crucial beard questions, so little time.

Permalink | Email this | Linking Blogs | Comments

Obama Cabinet Taking Shape

Filed under: Hillary Clinton, Democrats, Barack Obama, Bill Richardson, Obama Administration
Earlier, Michael posted word of Hillary Clinton's reported acceptance of the Secretary of State job.

Now comes more news on the emerging government. On a Clinton conference call last week, I asked Howard Wolfson 3 or 4 times if he thought Carville should apologize for the Judas remark, at one point asking the follow-up, "If Richardson is Judas in this analogy, whom does that make Senator Clinton?" From The New York Observer:
And after three attempts by AOL reporter Tommy Christopher, Wolfson said that James Carville should speak for himself about whether he regrets comparing Bill Richardson to Judas, but, added, "If I had said it, I would apologize."

So, I called Mr. Carville today to see what he had to say about it, especially Wolfson's tacit demand for an apology. Now, Carville and I are both on record as saying that the serial apologies in this campaign have been ridiculous, and that people ought to toughen up a little. I only asked Howard about the Judas comment because he was really having a go at General Merrill McPeak for his Joe McCarthy comment. Here are a few choice quotes from our exchange:

Tommy Christopher: In your op ed today, first of all, you credited Keith Olbermann with the line, "So if he's Judas in this analogy, who's Jesus?" I just wanted to let you know, that was my line, I asked Howard that at the conference call.

James Carville: (laughs) Well, sorry, I didn't mean to give him credit, (necessarily)

TC: I wanted to get your comments on...

JC: I have never spoken out against any of Obama's supporters, Bobby Casey, Daschle, we're all friends, but considerin' the relationship with the Clintons, this (Richardson) was a special case that merited a special response. It was intended to cause him pain, and I think it did, it burned him.

JC: Look, this campaign ain't dirty, this is nothing. If the Obama campaign thinks the Republicans are going to leave him alone, they're livin' in a dream world.

TC: Sure, I get that, but the thing I really had a problem with was hitting him with the Commander in Chief thing, which I think hurts both of them.

JC: Well, I can't say anything about that.

Wow. My finest hour. I left James Carville speechless.

Well, not really. We talked for a few more minutes about the state of the Democratic Party vis a vis cojones. I like Carville's style, just not his DLC-style politics. Here's hoping they let him loose on McCain and Gingrich once this nomination is settled.

As for the aforementioned prize-fight? A Mike Tyson-style knockout for Carville. Here's the thing. I agree with Richardson, he did the right thing in endorsing Obama, but Carville's characterization, although colorful and hyperbolic, was apt. His relationship with the Clintons, combined with the fact that he holds great influence with Hispanic voters, a key Clinton bloc, made his endorsement of Obama that much harder a punch.

Plus, does he really think President Clinton had nothing better to do on Super Bowl Sunday? I know if it was me, I would have been at the Maxim party or something. Richardson traded on that relationship for years, and although I give him the benefit of the doubt that his decision to endorse Obama was sincere, even he acknowledges he knew a storm was going to come. Governor Richardson needs to stop whining about it and take his lumps.

Permalink | Email this | Linking Blogs | Comments

Chill Out, Bill

Filed under: Hillary Clinton, Democrats, Breaking News, Bill Richardson, Bill Clinton

Exactly one day after Bill Clinton told nervous democrats to "chill out" regarding the protracted contest between his wife and Barack Obama, B.C. met with a group of California superdelegates. The meeting wasn't pretty. From the San Francisco Chronicle:

The former president went on a tirade that ran from the media's unfair treatment of Hillary to questions about the fairness of votes in state caucuses that voted for Obama. It ended with him asking super delegates to imagine what the reaction would be if Obama was trailing by just 1 percent and people were telling him to drop out.

"It was very, very intense," said one attendee. "Not at all like the Bill of earlier campaigns."

Said another invited super-delegate,

"It was one of the worst political meetings I have ever attended."

What set Bill Clinton off? A former Richardson delegate brought up the subject of James Carville's Judas remarks. Clinton could not contain himself about what he, too, sees as Richardson's betrayal.

"Five times to my face (Richardson) said he would never do that," a red-faced, finger-pointing Clinton erupted.

Richardson penned an explanation of his decision to endorse Obama in yesterday's Washington Post. Read it here.

But why is Bill Clinton telling everyone to calm down one moment, then blowing his stack the next?

Permalink | Email this | Linking Blogs | Comments

Judas!

Filed under: Hillary Clinton, Democrats, Barack Obama, Featured Stories, Bill Richardson, 2008 President
Come hell or high water, James Carville is sticking by it. After angrily comparing Bill Richardson to Judas Iscariot (for backing Barack Obama in the Democratic race for president), he has refused to step back from his overheated remark. Yes, that's right, he seems to believe that deciding who you'd rather vote for after carefully examining each candidate for several years is tantamount to turning Jesus Christ over to the Romans.

The exceedingly strained (and overused) Judas metaphor is often invoked by those purists who favor loyalty over all else. Most famously, it was hurled at Bob Dylan during his famous 1966 concert by a folk fanatic irate at the mere presence of electric guitars. Watch:

Richardson ably handled his own heckler:

"That's typical of many people around Senator Clinton," Richardson said. "They think they have a sense of entitlement to the presidency."

But Dylan's response seems equally applicable to this present day invocation of Judas. Richardson might just have easily come back with "I don't believe you, James Carville. You're a liar." How else to describe those paid political consultants like Mary Matalin (not to be confused with Mary Magdalene) and Carville who'll say anything to score points for their bosses? Remember when Carville declared that if Hillary didn't win both Texas and Ohio, "this thing is done"?

Richardson described the conversation that he had with Clinton last night "tough."

"It was tough to make the call, but I did. It got a little heated. It got a little tense. But it was understood, and I'm proud of my decision."

He stressed that his decision to endorse Obama came a week before, but it was reinforced by the speech Obama gave on race last Tuesday. He cited his own racial background as a Hispanic to underscore why the speech was so significant.

"I'm a Hispanic and I felt that what he said about being a nation of what all of us being together really clenched it," he said.

Clenched it? Perhaps, but I bet it was really what clinched it for you, unless it was a teeth-gritting experience.

So... really what he thinks or is he gunning for VP on the first black/hispanic ticket in American history?

But yeah, I do believe that that conversation with Hillary was not fun at all. She is settling back down in the polls. Obama has staunched the bleeding (in the primary anyway) over the Pastor Wright scandal. And everyone is being reminded that Obama is, after all, still leading with delegates. Richardson is from a small but strategic state and may be able to help with the hispanic communities throughout the Southwest. So despite his lack of showing on his own, this is a major blow for the Clinton campaign.

Permalink | Email this | Linking Blogs | Comments

Bill Richardson Endorses Senator Barack Obama

Filed under: Democrats, Barack Obama, Featured Stories, Bill Richardson, 2008 President
The Associated Press reports that New Mexico Governor Bill Richardson is endorsing Illinois Senator Barack Obama's candidacy for President:
New Mexico Gov. Bill Richardson, the nation's only Hispanic governor, is endorsing Sen. Barack Obama for president ...

"I believe he is the kind of once-in-a-lifetime leader that can bring our nation together and restore America's moral leadership in the world," Richardson said in a statement obtained by the AP. "As a presidential candidate, I know full well Sen. Obama's unique moral ability to inspire the American people to confront our urgent challenges at home and abroad in a spirit of bipartisanship and reconciliation."
Richardson's endorsement is one of a handful of truly meaningful endorsements still up for grabs, endorsements that could actually translate to more votes for a candidate. Richardson has been buzzed about as a Vice Presidential candidate, was seen as having the best resume´ of the Democratic field, and is seen as being able to deliver a large amount of Hispanic votes for whomever he endorses.

This is a huge endorsement for Senator Obama, and it could not have come at a better time for him. Does Richardson's seal of approval signal that the DNC and the Democratic establishment have already made up their minds? Has Bill Richardson stuck a fork in Clinton's White House bid?
After all of the dust has settled, Hillary Clinton has managed to close the polling gap with Obama, but has also erased a nearly campaign-long Democratic lead over McCain. With Obama's delegate lead, the net effect has simply been to weaken Obama's chances against McCain in November.

The Clinton campaign clings to hope that it can go to Denver having closed the gap enough to put the Superdelegates in play. Richardson's endorsement could be the signal that it ain't gonna happen that way. If several more endorsements like this, from key Democrats like Al Gore and John Edwards, go Obama's way in short order, that would indicate that the grownups have made their ruling. Because Richardson is so influential with Hispanics, a key Clinton and McCain demographic, this is one heavy domino.

Clinton's supporters have been stressing that pledged delegates are not bound by the rules to vote the way their state does, but fail to explain the extraordinary circumstances in which they would circumvent the will of the people. They don't look at the votes and say, "Hmmm. Let me mull that over." The expectation is that they will vote that way.

The flexibility is there to allow, say, Edwards' delegates to vote for Obama, or on the Republican side, both of Rudy Giuliani's to vote for McCain. It is not there to allow the pledge delegates to play Solomon.

The Democratic Party can ill afford to have their nominee seen as illegitimate, and would be wise to try to engineer a clear victory for one or the other. Since the delegate math is stacked so significantly against Hillary, and she has signaled her intent to remain at the party long after the host has handed her her coat, now would be the time for them to finish their drinks and go home with Obama.

Permalink | Email this | Linking Blogs | Comments

Super Tuesday Means Goodbye Forever

Filed under: Democrats, Republicans, Joe Biden, Chris Dodd, Bill Richardson, 2008 President, Tom Tancredo, Ken Layne's Outrage
They've become almost like distant family over this long year-and-a-half campaign that still has another eight months to go -- the kind of family you pray won't actually show up at Christmas or Thanksgiving, but family nonetheless. A number of unlikely nominees never ever made it to the "declared" part of the race. Farewell, Chuck Hagel, Jim Gilmore and Sam Nunn! It's like you never even ran for president, because you didn't.

After the hundred-million-dollar carnage of Super Duper Tuesday, we'll most likely have only a single Republican not named Mitt Romney to kick around, while Hillary and Obama may well keep kicking each other around until summer. Al Gore and Mike Bloomberg could even jump in the race to make it fun again. But today, let's say a quiet "Good Riddance" to all the pretend presidents we'll never really have to think about ever again. They tend to be susceptible to dramatic convulsions due to various unpredicted influences. Candidates have provoked marked shifts in their numbers through entirely unplanned episodes - think of Hillary's recent near-tear-shedding epiphany, George Allen's Macaca-moment and Howard Dean's infamous scream-heard-'round-the-world.

Often, the actions of candidates have profound effects on their rivals. The most prevalent factor (apparently unless you're Fred Thompson) is simply whether or not a candidate is present in the race. Ross Perot and Ralph Nader (and, potentially, Ron Paul?) demonstrate the incredible impact of a third-party presence.

Usually, however, the sudden waves in the primary pool are caused by the jettisoning of a candidate from the race. Already, the present cycle has seen the departure of Sen. Joe Biden (D), Rep. Tom Tancredo (R), Sen. Brownback (R), Sen. Chris Dodd (D) and Gov. Bill Richardson (D) (and Stephen Colbert (I), if you insist). While these resignations have had little effect (as the candidates held little sway among voters), we've now reached the point at which major contenders will begin packing it in and calling it quits.

On the Republican side, the field is still wide open, and so the likelihood of a meaningful bow-out is unlikely. Ron Paul probably ought to quit the race, but will likely remain long after the humor of his campaign has worn thin. And, along with Fred Thompson, the Paul departure would likely have little effect. However, the next Republican to fall could have a tremendous influence on the remaining flock, as unmoored voters scrambled to find a new candidate.

The Democratic race has already reached the critical stage in this regard. The political wisdom (for what it has proved to be worth) has pretty much narrowed the field to a contest between Clinton and Obama. While the jettisoning of Kucinich [Did you remember that he was still a candidate?] will likely prove unmentionable, John Edwards could possibly swing the nomination with his parting. If either of the remaining Democratic candidates were to siphon off a solid majority of Edwards' not-insignificant voter base, they would likely sweep the primaries and clinch the nomination.

However, Paul Mirengoff over at Powerline thinks this unlikely. Mirengoff posits that Edwards' anti-corporate voters will shy away from Clinton, whereas the New York Senator will attract his female and blue-collar constituencies. The result would be "a wash," with neither candidate having an opportunity to decisively capitalize upon the moment. If true, the Democrats might endure a far more bloody and divisive two-person conflict than the somewhat diffused Republican race.

The dynamics and possibilities are endless and impossible to predict with any certainty - but we augur our entrails and peer into our crystal balls nonetheless. Thus is the curse of the thinking and restless class!

Permalink | Email this | Linking Blogs | Comments
