The report wiped away any hope of job recovery this year, the New York Times concluded, and suggests high unemployment levels could remain through next year or longer. New York's tallest skyscraper regularly changes its iconic lighting for holidays and events. But this time, the building's choice of occasions to celebrate is drawing more attention than usual, and backlash primarily from conservative bloggers.

"What's next, Marx, Lenin and Trotsky's birthday's too?" one blogger wrote. But not this!"

The China-friendly lighting will be in place from Sept. 30-Oct. 1. At 10 a.m. Wednesday, members of the Consul General of the People's Republic, including Consul General Peng Keyu, will "flip the light switch on a scale model of the Empire State Building."

Empire State Building Goes Red and Yellow for China; Outrage Ensues [Village Voice]

Permalink | Email this | Linking Blogs | Comments

'Going Rogue': Sarah Palin Titles Memoir, Moves Up Release Date

Filed under: Breaking News, Media, Sarah Palin
Sarah Palin's publisher plans to announce the title of her eagerly anticipated memoir Tuesday: "Going Rogue: An American Life." The memoir's publication will also be moved up four or five months -- from spring of next year to Nov. 17 -- to respond to high demand and catch the holiday book-buying season.

"Going Rogue" will receive an initial printing of 1.5 million copies, the same number as Ted Kennedy's "True Compass." Palin's first book will be 400 pages long, and was completed a breezy four months after the deal was announced.

"Governor Palin has been unbelievably conscientious and hands-on at every stage, investing herself deeply and passionately in this project," said Jonathan Burnham, publisher of Harper. "It's her words, her life, and it's all there in full and fascinating detail."

After leaving office July 26, Palin traveled with her husband to the San Diego home of Lynn Vincent, her collaborator and an editor at World magazine, to work on the book. Later, she spent several days in New York going over the final edits. Palin originally had a deadline of Sept. 15, but turned in her manuscript early. The book is currently undergoing copy-editing and fact-checking, which have been dramatically sped up to meet the new publication schedule.

Palin's Title: 'Going Rogue' [Politico]
Palin Finishes Memoir, 'Going Rogue," Out Nov. 17 [Associated Press]

Permalink | Email this | Linking Blogs | Comments

Obama Calls Kanye West a 'Jackass'

Filed under: Barack Obama, Breaking News, Media
ABC News reporter Terry Moran set Twitter afire Monday with a bit of inside reporting on an interview that took place on another network: President Obama, Moran revealed on his Twitter feed, had referred to Kanye West a "jackass."

"Pres. Obama just called Kanye West a 'jackass' for his outburst at the VMAs when Taylor Swift won. Now THAT's presidential," Moran wrote at 6:39 p.m. yesterday. The quote quickly spread across the social networking site until CNBC, whose reporter had been interviewing Obama when he made the comment, objected that it had come during an off-the-record portion of the interview. Moran deleted his tweet within an hour after posting it, and ABC released a statement apologizing for the "premature" report.

"In the process of reporting on remarks by President Obama that were made during a CNBC interview, ABC News employees prematurely tweeted a portion of those remarks that turned out to be from an off-the-record portion of the interview. This was done before our editorial process had been completed. That was wrong. We apologize to the White House and CNBC and are taking steps to ensure that it will not happen again."
In a press conference involving their unlawful termination lawsuit against ArmorGroup, former senior company officials said the company is responsible for widespread fraud; using non-English-speaking guards at the expensive of embassy security; operating a shell corporation to obtain contracts meant for American companies; and even prostitution.

ArmorGroup came under fire last week when reports and photos of hazings, public nudity, and other "Lord of the Flies"-type behavior among guards in Kabul were released to the public. The Project on Government Oversight, which informed the State Department of the guards' antics, also detailed accusations of fraud in ArmorGroup's $189 million contract.

In their statement Friday, the former officials said the company dramatically underbids its contracts, and intentionally used (non-English-speaking) Nepalese guards to cover its tracks, which immediately compromised the security of the embassy. (The company's predecessor lost its contract over a similar offense.) Most startling of all, the former employees said they knew of brothels being kept in Kabul, stocked with enslaved girls brought from China for sexual exploitation.
CBS re-interviewed 678 adults who were first questioned about health care reform in late August. In the first poll, only 40 percent approved of the president's work on health care, while 47 percent disapproved. Asked again after they heard Obama's speech, 52 percent of the same adults approved, and disapproval had dropped to 38 percent. The speech was especially effective in unifying Democrats, 85 percent of whom now support the president.

Even if they support Obama's plans for reform, some respondents still felt that he has not explained it clearly. 43 percent -- one in four of those polled -- said they are still confused about the details.
Obama thanked Wilson for apologizing "quickly and without equivocation," and said he understands that "we all make mistakes."

Meanwhile, at the Democrats' press conference this morning, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi said it was time for Democrats to move on from the incident. "As far as I'm concerned, the episode was unfortunate. Mr. Wilson has apologized. It's time for us to talk about health care and not Mr. Wilson."

But some tension remains after the apology, with different members of the House from both parties insisting that Wilson apologize more formally. Wilson said his original apology to Rahm Emanuel was intended for everyone involved and that he would not repeat it on the House floor. "Period," Wilson added for emphasis. He also mentioned that out of the "hundreds" of phone calls he had received over the incident, most had been supportive of his behavior.
"My offense was engaging in inappropriate storytelling," Duvall said in a statement posted on his Web site. He added that his decision to resign "is in no way an admission that I had an affair or affairs."

A routine video recording of the California Legislature captured Duvall conversing with fellow Assemblyman Jeff Miller during a break in the session on July 8. He describes affairs with two women, one a lobbyist. Duvall gives graphic descriptions of his sexual activity with the lobbyist, referring to her "eye-patch underwear" and saying he was "getting into spanking her." The tape eventually showed up on the local CBS News station, which broke the story as a "sex scandal."
Forty-nine percent say they oppose the health care plans currently under consideration in congress, while 34 percent say they support them.

Obama's overall numbers took a significant hit in August as well, with 49 percent now saying they disapprove of how he is handling his job as president, compared to 42 percent in July. Voters are about evenly split on how they think congress should approach health care reform now: about four in ten say they should keep trying to pass a bill this year, and an equal number say they should start over. But only two in ten say Washington should leave the health care system as is.

For details: Obama Disapproval on Health Care Up to 52 Percent [AP]

Permalink | Email this | Linking Blogs | Comments

Andrew Sullivan: Only Bush Can Remove 'Stain' of Torture

Filed under: Bush Administration, Breaking News, Iraq, Scandal, Foreign Policy, Afghanistan
In a lengthy open letter in the October issue of The Atlantic, Andrew Sullivan calls on President Bush to take responsibility for the torture and military abuses that happened on his watch, and help absolve the nation of its guilt. Sullivan praises Bush's recognition of September 11 as a declaration of war and of terrorism as a serious emerging threat to the West. But, Sullivan says, the U.S. lost its moral high ground.

U.S. abuses in the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan were not the work of "bad apples," Sullivan writes, but orders from the highest levels of the Bush administration."You were the commander in chief and president, and these were presidential-level decisions," he writes. "The responsibility for all of this is yours -- before the American people and before the court of history. And you need finally to own these decisions, to take full responsibility for them, to account for them, to explain them, and, yes, to apologize for their scope and brutality."

Sullivan accepts President Obama's opposition to investigating and prosecuting military and intelligence personnel who violated the law, saying such an effort would be "too damaging and polarizing to the American polity." He mentions his and Bush's shared Christian faith, which he says cannot tolerate torture, and appeals to Bush's expressed revulsion at the tactics his administration initiated.

"Mr. President, remove that stain, for your own sake as well as ours. You have one last charge to keep."

For details: Dear President Bush [The Atlantic]

Permalink | Email this | Linking Blogs | Comments

New York Times Reporter Freed, Interpreter Killed in British Raid

Filed under: Breaking News, International, Afghanistan

Abducted New York Times reporter Stephen Farrell was rescued in northern Afghanistan in a raid that killed his Afghan interpreter and a British commando early Wednesday morning. Gunmen had seized Farrell and his interpreter, Sultan Munadi, on Saturday while they were reporting on the aftermath of a deadly NATO airstrike near Kunduz. The Times said it had kept the kidnapping quiet "out of concern for the men's safety."

The rescue operation was a British-planned mission, as Farrell holds dual Irish-British citizenship, and was carried out with the support of U.S. forces. When "British nationals are kidnapped, we and our allies will do everything in our power to free them," British Prime Minister Gordon Brown said in a statement. Farrell said that he and Munadi heard an approaching helicopter, then gunfire. Munadi ran forward screaming, "Journalist!" but was cut down by a hail of bullets from Taliban gunmen. Farrell dove into a ditch until he recognized British voices, and called out that he was a British hostage.

Farrell has been reporting for the Times' Baghdad bureau since 2007, and has a strong reputation among the people of Afghanistan. Munadi had worked regularly with the Times and other news organizations, and was studying for a public policy degree in Germany. He planned to combat illiteracy in Afghanistan by working in public education.

Aides close to the speech preparations say Obama will also likely make strong assurances that the public option would not provide such a level of subsidy that it would have an unfair advantage over private insurers.

Much of the controversy over health care reform has centered on this issue, with insurers saying a public option will drive them out of business, Republicans saying they won't support a plan that includes it, and liberal Democrats saying they won't support a plan without it. Administration officials have repeatedly said the public option is an expendable part of their agenda, and say the president will announce that he is open to better ideas if lawmakers have them.

In a news analysis published Wednesday, the New York Times notes that the "uproar does not seem to have greatly altered public opinion or substantially weakened Democrats' resolve." While Americans have shown themselves to be extremely uneasy with changing the health care system, most still believe it needs a major restructuring.

Prospects for reform legislation look good in both houses of Congress. Democrats have reached broad agreement on what the package should look like, and four of the five House committees considering the issue have already passed bills. The Senate poses a more formidable challenge, but the bill's prospects for passage are improving there, as well: Sen. Ben Nelson of Nebraska, a wavering Democrat, said over the weekend he would probably support the bill, and Olympia Snowe (R-Maine) remains deeply involved in negotiations. There are indications that at least two other Republican votes are in play, which would put the Democrats over the 60-vote mark they need to pass the legislation without being delayed by filibuster.

In the controversial thesis, McDonnell included homosexuality as one symptom of moral decline that government should "punish." He also participated in a 2003 hearing that left many with the impression that a Virginia circuit court judge was thrown off the bench because of her sexual orientation.

In the seven-hour hearing that the Washington Post calls "extraordinary," Virginia lawmakers grilled Verbena M. Askew, the state's first black female circuit court judge, whose reappointment was in jeopardy because she was accused of sexually harassing a female colleague. Before the hearing, McDonnell told a newspaper that "certain homosexual conduct" could disqualify a person from the bench, because it violates Virginia's "crimes against nature" law. He qualified his stance, saying he would not consider a judge unfit to serve because he or she was gay, but made clear he believed that some of their actions could violate the law.

McDonnell now says that the hearing and his previous comments have nothing to do with his current race for governor, though he did say the quotations were inaccurate and "inartful." The reporter who interviewed him remembers asking if he had ever violated the so-called "crimes against nature" law, which prohibits oral or anal sex. McDonnell responded, "Not that I recall."

Hildebrand remains close with many top Obama aides, and is so far the highest-profile "inside" critic to speak strongly against the president.

"I am one of the millions of frustrated Americans who want to see Washington do more than it's doing right now," Hildebrand told Politico. Speaking of the administration and the Democratic leadership as a whole, he said, "I'm not going to just sit by the curb and let these folks get away with a lack of performance for the American people."

Hildebrand sometimes clashed with other campaign officials over strategy and what they perceived as his tendency to speak too candidly with reporters rather than stay tightly on message. He first voiced his unrest in an Aug. 22 speech to a gay organization in San Diego, but it escaped notice except in the gay press.

"I gave up a lot to elect Democrats, and I expect them to give it up for me. I'm going to speak loudly," Hildebrand said.

For details: Advisor Losing Patience with Obama [Politico]

Permalink | Email this | Linking Blogs | Comments

'Manhattan Madam' Says She'll Challenge Eliot Spitzer if He Runs for Office

Filed under: Breaking News, Scandal, Eliot Spitzer

There is at least one person in New York who wouldn't be happy with an Eliot Spitzer comeback: "Manhattan Madam" Kristin Davis, who now says that she will run against Spitzer if he attempts to return to politics. Davis once ran what she describes as "New York City's most successful prostitution ring," which supplied Spitzer with escorts and sex partners before his exposure and resignation as New York governor in 2008.

Now, Davis is keeping close tabs on his much-discussed search for political rebirth.

"Eliot Spitzer has the bug," Davis wrote on her Web site. "For the second time in six months he has been caught planning a come-back. First, he floated a trial balloon for his old job as Attorney General. . . . Now he is contemplating a run for the US Senate or New York State Comptroller." She was referring to rumors that Spitzer is testing the waters for a comeback, all of which he has firmly denied. Since leaving office, he has written for Slate and begun teaching an undergraduate class on law at the City University of New York.

Davis said she hoped to use any future political campaigns as an opportunity to air more sordid details about Spitzer's liaisons with prostitutes. "I may have to run myself to focus attention on the multiple illegal acts for which he has not been punished, his abuse of women and the sexism in the way he walked away scot free while I went to Rikers [Island] for four months," she warned. "There is far more to tell about Eliot Spitzer, the ladies and the way he treated them."

Permalink | Email this | Linking Blogs | Comments

Germany in Political Turmoil Over NATO Airstrike in Afghanistan

Filed under: Breaking News, Investigations, Foreign Policy, Afghanistan

A NATO airstrike in Afghanistan last week killed at least 100 people and sparked a flurry of outrage in Germany after it was reported that German military officials ordered the attack. German soldiers are normally restricted to peacekeeping duties. Their role in the deadly bombing shook their country's presidential campaign and prompted lawmakers to pressure Defense Minister Franz Josef Jung for an explanation. Aides to Chancellor Angela Merkel say she will address the German parliament on Tuesday.

"U.S. and NATO officials said the German decision to order the bombing was based on reports from a single Afghan informant and sketchy video surveillance, a possible violation of new NATO rules limiting the use of airstrikes," the Washington Post reported Tuesday. German prosecutors are considering opening a homicide investigation into the order, which sent a U.S. fighter jet to blow up two hijacked fuel trucks.

She also commended Michelle Obama for making the White House into a comfortable home for her family, and defended the president's decision to speak to students returning to school this week. It's "really important for everyone to respect the president of the United States," Bush said during the interview in Paris, where she is promoting global literacy. "I think there is a place for the president . . . to talk to schoolchildren."

Bush did not completely dismiss conservative concerns about the speech, but said it was unfair to call Obama a socialist, and lamented the deeply divided state of American politics. She conceded that her husband found it more difficult to be a "uniter" as president than he did as governor. "He was disappointed that that was not the way it worked out in Washington," she said. "I'm sure President Obama didn't expect it to be that way [either]. All of us need to do what we can to come together on issues."

The commission, which is backed by the United Nations, has been investigating hundreds of fraud complaints, selected out of a growing collection that numbers in the thousands. A senior U.N. envoy had already called for a crackdown on "irregularities."

The Afghanistan election, which seems to have favored incumbent President Hamid Karzai, has been plagued by ethics complaints for weeks now. A teacher in Kabul assigned to run a polling station arrived to find ballot boxes already full, and was carted away by security forces when he took issue with the flagrant ballot-stuffing. Voter turnout was particularly low in areas where the Taliban is most powerful, and the overall turnout of women was lower than usual. Fraud complaints soared to 2,000 within a week of the late-August vote.

Kai Eide, the U.N. special representative for Afghanistan, called for the recount in a written statement early Tuesday. The ECC said there should be a recount at any polling station where one candidate received 95 percent of the vote or more.

For details: Recounts Ordered in Afghan Vote [BBC News]

Permalink | Email this | Linking Blogs | Comments
