He had skipped the two previous white-tie banquets and amateur theatricals where some of Washington's top journalists spoof the political/media establishment in song, dance and ridiculous costumes. But on Saturday night, Obama duly snarked for his supper by mocking himself, potential rivals and the tradition-bound club that even in this age of Twitter and You Tube, steadfastly bars TV coverage.

As commander-in-chief, he signaled Marine Gunnery Sgt. Kevin Bennear, one of the club's musically gifted ringer members, to "play that song we talked about," meaning the loud and proud "Born in the U-S-A, Born in the U-S-A" refrain made famous by Bruce Springsteen.

"Some things just bear repeating," Obama said of the lyrics, as if there might be any birthers questioning his citizenship among more than 630 politicians, government and media heavyweights who packed the Renaissance Hotel ballroom for the priciest and most exclusive of Washington's press celebrations of itself. ($300 per ticket, and a fraction of the more than 2,000 expected at next month's White House Correspondents' Association Dinner).

Then, taking aim at his hosts, whose predecessors entertained their first White House guests 126 years ago, Obama ticked off the heady events of 2011 that topped old regimes elsewhere in the world and said, "Look out, Gridiron Club."
He had other targets, of course, some of them in the audience and most already ridiculed onstage in elaborately costumed Republican and Democratic skits.

Commenting on the "unusual skin tone" (translate orange) of the absent Speaker John Boehner, Obama said he used to think it was a tan until he saw how often his nemesis got weepy: "I realize that's not a tan, it's rust."

Noting a new civility (really?) that has "people with strong disagreements getting along as never before," Obama cited Mitt Romney, the "former Massachusetts governor and presidential candidate working together by sharing a host body. It's inspiring...and creepy."

Obama thanked the rotund Republican Gov. Haley Barbour of Mississippi -- not known for his athleticism -- for backing first lady Michelle Obama's "Let's Move" anti-obesity initiative. "Haley, when Michelle said you should run, she didn't mean for president," the president said.

As for the also-absent Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton, Obama said her passion for recent Middle East regime change made it "hard to sleep with Hillary out on Pennsylvania Avenue shouting and throwing rocks."

The president had barbs for the dinner's two other speakers, Republican Gov. Mitch Daniels of Indiana, a possible 2012 White House contender, and Democratic Health and Human Services Secretary Kathleen Sebelius, a former Kansas governor who has struggled to push Obama's embattled health care plan.

"Mitch tore into his filet like it was a public employee," Obama said of Daniels, who reversed the requirement that state workers be union members. He cited Daniels's prior experience as a pharmaceutical executive and President George W. Bush's budget chief. "I don't have a joke here," Obama said. "I just wanted to put that out."

Having asked his own cabinet members to "cut things they care about, in Kathleen's case it was her once-promising political career."

Earlier Daniels, his right arm in a sling following rotator cuff surgery, went after Obama by recalling the Democratic candidate's private remarks to big party donors about conservatives clinging hard to their guns and their religion. "Mr. President, until I get this thing off, I can cling to my gun or my Bible, but not both," Daniels said.

At 5 feet 7 inches and balding, Daniels, who said he's still mulling whether to run, ticked off
a string adjectives used to describe him in recent news stories. "Small, stiff, short, pale, unimposing, unassuming, uninspiring, understated, uncharismatic, accountant-like, non-telegenic, boring, balding, blunt, nerdy, wooden, wonky, puny, and pint-sized," he said. "Really, it all points to one inescapable conclusion: It's destiny!"

In her speech, Sebelius told Daniels they had much in common. "We're both Midwest governors, we've both been cabinet members and neither of us is going to be president in 2012," she said.

Saying one reason she took her current job was because "it came with great health insurance," Sebelius then announced a plan to put TSA airport screeners in the HHS building "making it a lot easier for the businessman on the go by allowing him to get a boarding pass and a colonoscopy at the same time."

Among all that levity a couple of backstories played out.

At a time of toxic partisanship in Washington, the 65-member Gridiron Club (disclosure alert: I was tapped to join in 1990) and its swank dinner offers the chance for political adversaries to share a night of conversation, merriment, political gossip and agenda promoting.

But it's also the kind of gathering that make cynical voters outside the Beltway think there's not a dime's worth of difference between the two political parties, and that the relationship between the pols and the press is entirely too cozy and elitist.

The Gridiron president, Susan Page of USA Today, took note of that when she said in her welcoming speech that all those swells dressing up in white tie and sipping fine wine and hanging out for an evening "is exactly what the tea party suspected."

Then there is the irony of the Gridiron's policy of barring TV cameras, photographers and non-member, non-guest journalists from covering the dinner.

This is the 25th consecutive year C-SPAN has been denied access, prompting Mark Knoller, longtime White House correspondent for CBS Radio and not a Gridiron member, to Tweet that although Gridiron members attending the event are allowed to cover it, "barring WH press pool coverage of a presidential event is indefensible."

But Page told Politics Daily that transparency is maintained by all those reporters at the dinner who file stories after it's over, and who attend the Friday dress rehearsal to see the costumes and hear the lyrics. She also told me there is no great move afoot among members to push for TV cameras inside the room.

In part, it's to preserve a little mystery and exclusivity. But let's not kid ourselves. There probably aren't too many Gridiron members -- or their bosses who pick up the considerable dinner tab - very eager to end up on C-SPAN or You Tube dressed as a Hell's Angel, a drag queen or a dancing oil rig.

As Obama left the ballroom Saturday night, he had one bit of cheery news for the crowd: "The bar will be open till midnight and last time I checked, so will the government." Actually, the after-party was still going strong early Sunday.

Permalink | Email this | Linking Blogs | Comments

The Gridiron Club's 2011 Political/Media Roast and Toast Lyrics

Of course there's always a chance an adroit cellphone or camera-toting guest will violate club rules, either at the dinner or at Sunday's matinee reprise show, thus busting an image-less tradition in place since 1885.

Say what you will about the irony or hypocrisy of a group of journalists barring media cameras from broadcasting the onstage antics (C-SPAN has been asking to do just that for a quarter century). Only the speeches by President Obama, Gov. Mitch Daniels of Indiana (cracking jokes for the Republicans) and Health and Human Services Secretary Kathleen Sibelius (doing stand-up for the Dems) will be on the written record, although many more details will likely leak out.

In a nod to the times, tweeting, Facebooking and other instant communication about all aspects of the dinner were embargoed until it ended.

So in the interest of semi-transparency, herewith the lyrics from every parody performed
this weekend by nearly 100 journalists and a handful of vocally-blessed ringers with truly great voices.

Cast portraying GOP Sens. John McCain and Lindsey Graham

MCCAIN:

Gays in the military
Used to never bother me at all
I was happy once letting
The Joint Chiefs make that call
And on immigration,
You know my old stance was withdrawn
And my message, it became:
"Hey Juan, get off my lawn." [shout this line]

And it may seem to you I lived last year
With my finger in the wind
Never knowing what to cling to
'Cause I had to win
And when it comes to all your judgments
Frankly, I don't give a damn.
I still have my Senate seat
And my best friend, Lindsey Graham

CHORUS
He still has his Senate seat
And his best friend, Lindsey Graham
To tweet the un-thought-about tweet
To own my own name through trademark
To scorn those who opine against me
To shoot caribou on a lark

To give those at C-Pac the shaft
To star in reality shows
To bear the unbearable liberals
To blog about things I don't know

This is my quest
To side-step the press
To run if I want to
Not under duress

To fight for the right
And to lay waste the left
To be willing to refudiate
Without knowledge or heft

And I know if I only stay true
To my Tea Party base
That my books and my speeches will sell
If I just show my face
Haley Barbour) to Alaska (c'mon, you can do it), Mike Huckabee admits that he mulls every day whether he should enter the wide-open GOP presidential contest.

But unlike other Republican White House dreamers -- with the conspicuous exception of the indefatigable Mitt Romney -- Huckabee knows the adrenaline rush and the arduous pressures of a presidential race from his quest for the 2008 GOP nomination. "If you've jumped out of an airplane," Huckabee told Washington political reporters Wednesday afternoon, "you have a whole lot better understanding of what you're going to do the next time you do it because you've done it."
Not since New York Gov. Mario Cuomo (aka "Hamlet on the Hudson") bowed out of the 1992 Democratic presidential race with a plane waiting on the tarmac to fly him to New Hampshire has a political party been so afflicted with "to be or not to be" indecision. In a rare burst of clarity, South Dakota Sen. John Thune, after "lots of prayer," announced Tuesday that he would remain on Capitol Hill. But whether it is deciphering Sarah Palin's intentions or guessing what is going on with Indiana Gov. Mitch Daniels, political reporting on the potential Republican 2012 field has morphed into a branch of soothsaying.

At the Wednesday afternoon coffee organized by the Christian Science Monitor, Huckabee conveyed the impression (at least to me) that he is poised to enter the GOP fray if the politics allow him to delay until summer. "The idea that somebody would crank up a campaign as early as possible -- having been through it -- doesn't make sense," the former Arkansas governor said. With his weekend show on Fox News, his paid speeches, his new book ("A Simple Government") and, yes, hosting an early June cruise to Alaska, Huckabee, who hails from the populist wing of the Republican Party, admits, "In the last few years, I certainly have done better than I ever have in my life."

Huckabee stressed that, after cashing in his life insurance and annuities to seek the presidency in 2008, "One thing I committed to myself, my wife and God was that, if I do this, I am going to be in a position where I'm not totally destitute at the end of it." But Huckabee, who clearly is devouring poll numbers even more intensely than he checks the bestseller lists, appears to believe that he has enough name recognition and enough support to mount a credible late entry.

"I'm in a very different position that I was four years ago," he said. "Obviously, I'm better known. I'm polling at the top of virtually every national poll. . . . It doesn't mean that I can wait indefinitely. It certainly means that I would be smart . . . to wait for the field to develop."

The decision to run for president -- the ultimate triumph of narcissism and ambition over rational behavior -- is one of the least understood aspects of presidential politics. Few would-be presidents are as blunt as Jimmy Carter was in his campaign autobiography, "Why Not the Best?" Recalling how he was courted by White House contenders in both parties when he was governor of Georgia, Carter wrote, "I lost my feeling of awe about presidents." A 1970s Democrat, who fell far short on his way to the White House, argued that the mental trick was believing that you were more qualified than your rivals for the nomination -- and not that you were superior to 250 million Americans.

Many candidates have run for president before they were politically ready, whether it was Bob Dole in 1980, Al Gore and Joe Biden in 1988 (actually, he dropped out in 1987) and, yes, Barack Obama in 2008. "For up-and-comers, there is really nothing to be lost in running," said Elaine Kamarck, a former adviser to Al Gore who now teaches at Harvard's Kennedy School. "Bill Clinton -- and I was privy to conversations about this -- never expected to win the nomination in 1992. He thought Mario Cuomo would be the nominee who would lose to George H.W. Bush in November. By running, Clinton was positioning himself for 1996." Former Minnesota GOP Gov. Tim Pawlenty, who is 50, fits this up-and-coming probable candidate profile. Little known nationally, but respected by political insiders, Pawlenty should also be thinking about 2016 as he gets ready for the ordeal of visiting all 99 counties of Iowa.

Presidential candidates not only have to believe in their almost super-human abilities and their potential to bend the national destiny in their bare hands, but they also have to see political openings where often, in reality, none exist. Larry Rasky, who advised Biden on both his 1987 and his under-funded 2008 presidential campaign, said shrewdly, "Some of these people who run know that they will have the money. Some of these people think they will have the money. And some of these people convince themselves that they will somehow have the money."

Not all presidential candidates face a wrenching decision. "Once Ronald Reagan got into politics, it seemed like the only natural end of his career was the presidency," said Republican strategist Rich Galen, who worked for Fred Thompson's failed 2008 campaign. "More recently, 'W' was like Reagan. Once he got bit by the running-for-office bug, there was no stopping him." Sitting vice presidents (unless they are counted out for health reasons like Dick Cheney) automatically run for president at the end of eight years as George H.W. Bush did in 1988 and Al Gore in 2000.

For my book on the 2004 Democratic race, "One-Car Caravan," I interviewed all the presidential contenders about their decisions to throw their hats into the ring (or a yarmulke in Joe Lieberman's case). There was something naively touching about former Florida Sen. Bob Graham, who dropped out before the Iowa caucuses, telling his wife, Adele, as they drove by the White House, "Maybe we'll be in that house over there in a couple of years." And Howard Dean -- long before he became the tribune of the anti-Iraq protest vote -- decided to run for president because the alternative was serving on corporate boards "and swearing at The New York Times every morning and saying how outrageous it was."

It has been nearly 60 years since both Dwight Eisenhower and Adlai Stevenson were drafted for the 1952 presidential nominations. These days, even fake drafts (like the one that Donald Trump apparently is trying to gin up) strain credulity. In truth, the only way to run for president is to nominate yourself as a candidate. That is why the first primary takes place in the minds and hearts of the men and women who fantasize about being the 2012 Republican nominee.

"You had a candidate promoted by the Republican establishment -- who didn't write off conservative voices -- but said, let's...we're going to move beyond that," said Limbaugh.

Limbaugh noted that it's fine to want to grow a movement, but added: "You don't diss the people who are already audiences of those shows...who won election for your party year after year after year after year. And all of this, of course, done to impress the mainstream media."

Limbaugh also had harsh words for the Conservative Political Action Conference (CPAC) -- which took place in Washington, DC, last weekend: "Social conservatives were dissed again at CPAC," said Limbaugh. "I mean, Cheney got heckled, called a war criminal and a draft dodger at CPAC. I'm sorry, that's not the CPAC that I've always thought of or known."

Governor Daniels gave a high-profile dinner speech at CPAC this year. Two years ago, Limbaugh delivered the keynote address at the conference.

The problem with CPAC, said Limbaugh, is "the principles are now up for grabs."

Permalink | Email this | Linking Blogs | Comments

Palin to Keynote Ronald Reagan 100th Birthday Celebration

Filed under: Dick Cheney, Sarah Palin, Governors, Conservatives, 2012 Elections
Sarah Palin was 16 when Ronald Reagan was sworn in as the 40th president of the United States in 1981. On Feb. 4, the former governor of Alaska will give the keynote address at the opening of two days of festivities marking the late president's 100th birthday.

Her speech at the Reagan Ranch Center in Santa Barbara, Calif., "will draw parallels to today, while calling on young people to continue the Reagan revolution into the future," according to Young America's Foundation, the sponsor of the event.

Palin, the 2008 Republican vice presidential candidate, says she is considering a bid for the presidency in 2012. Like most of her potential rivals for the GOP nomination, she considers herself a "Reagan conservative."

Former Vice President Dick Cheney will close out the festivities with a speech on Feb. 5. Cheney served in Congress, representing Wyoming, during the Reagan presidency.

In between the two speeches, event planners have scheduled a series of panels with Reagan authors (including Politics Daily contributor Lou Cannon), former Reagan administration officials and young conservative leaders. Young America's Foundation was founded at Vanderbilt University in 1969 with the aim of bringing more conservative speakers to college campuses.

"These special events kick off an entire year-long celebration of President Reagan's life, ideas and his relevance for today's times," the foundation said.

"I am pleased that former Vice President Cheney is healthy and resuming public activity, but I could not disagree more," the secretary of state said Tuesday. Cheney recently had a heart-pump implanted in his chest and has lost weight.

Clinton, in an interview taped for NBC's "Today" show, said Obama is "playing the hand he was dealt by the Bush-Cheney administration very well indeed" and has worked hard to "rescue" the U.S. and global economy. She clearly expects he will serve a second term, although she may not go there with him.

Asked about her political future, Clinton said she will finish out this four-year stint with the administration, but has not made any commitment to staying on as secretary of state beyond 2012. "I have said I am looking forward to returning to private life," she said, noting, "I do look forward to having a little more spare time and a few more hours just to take a deep breath, which seems hard to have in this job."

She also dismissed speculation that she would replace Defense Secretary Robert Gates if he steps down as "just rumors. I am happy to stay where I am."

In the interview, Clinton also talked about U.S. relations with China as President Hu Jintao makes a state visit to Washington. She said the United States must "stand up" for its interests and values while also "looking for common ground" with China.

Army Pfc. Bradley Manning, 23, was arrested in May and charged with illegally downloading classified information while working with an intelligence unit. He faces a possible court martial but has not been formally charged regarding the recent spate of WikiLeaks postings of State Department cables and war documents.

In Berkeley, the City Council apparently decided to wait for more legal clarity before deeming Manning a hero. The council voted 8-0 to table its Manning resolution after several hours of debate Tuesday night . "We don't even know if he [was the leaker]," Mayor Tom Bates said, according to CNN. ". . . We are willing to watch it and to consider it in the future, and if we feel it's appropriate to us to make some statement, we'll bring it back to our council." The resolution at this point, Bates said, is "premature. This is going to be a long debate."

Thyme S. Siegel, a member of Berkeley Peace and Justice Commission, told KTVU television that the Manning matter was a "drain" on the council's resources. "They have a fiscal crisis to deal with. Hello!" But the chairwoman of the commission, Wendy Kenin, argued that Manning provided an "amazing service" to the country so citizens "can make informed decisions about war and how it affects our troops around the world."

Manning was born in Oklahoma, but has also lived in Wales, part of the United Kingdom. He has been accused of providing WikiLeaks with a classified video purporting to show U.S. forces in a deadly helicopter attack on civilians in Baghdad in 2007.

Weighing in on Manning's situation was not a reach for the Berkeley lawmakers. In the past, the city across the bay from San Francisco has long been a hotbed of student activism (at the University of California, Berkeley), including anti-war protests. In 2006, the city approved a ballot issue calling on the U.S. House of Representatives to impeach President Bush and Vice President Cheney.

Halliburton and other firms are accused of paying as much as $180 million in bribes to win a contract to build a $6 billion liquefied natural gas plant in the African country's southern delta, the Associated Press reported Tuesday. Cheney, who headed Halliburton before he was elected vice president in 2000, is one of several company officers and former officials named in the case, which comes about four months before national elections in Nigeria.

Cheney's lawyer, Terrence O'Donnell, denied the allegations, saying in earlier investigations the Justice Department and SEC, "found no suggestion of any impropriety by Dick Cheney in his role of CEO of Halliburton... Any suggestion of misconduct on his part, made now, years later, is entirely baseless."

Nigeria's Economic and Financial Crimes Commission pointed specifically at a former Halliburton subsidiary, Houston-based KBR, which pleaded guilty last year in U.S. federal court to authorizing and paying bribes in Nigeria for plant contracts between 1995 and 2004.

Cheney, 69, and suffering from chronic heart disease, is unlikely to travel to Nigeria anytime soon, and officials in Lagos would have a hard time compelling his appearance. A major oil supplier to the United States, Nigeria itself is regarded by analysts and watchdog groups as having one of the world's most corrupt governments, the AP said.

But it's highly unlikely Cheney will travel to the African country anytime soon -- and officials in Lagos cannot compel his appearance. The anti-corruption case has been percolating for some time and Nigerian elections come around in April, so there could be a political element at play, the Washington Post reports.
The case concerns bribery accusations related to a former Halliburton engineering subsidiary, KBR, and the construction of a liquefied natural gas plant. Before he was elected vice president in 2000, Cheney headed Halliburton a giant oil services firm.
Bush declared the end of major combat operations in Iraq may wind up hanging in the planned Bush library in Dallas.

The red, white and blue banner, initially stored by the National Archives, has been shipped to the temporary headquarters of the George W. Bush Presidential Center in Lewisville, Texas. Alan Lowe, director of the center, said a decision has yet to be made on whether or how to display it in the 227,000-square foot building, which is to open in 2013.

The banner became the subject of ridicule when violence raged on in Iraq after the Bush speech. He made it from the deck of the aircraft carrier, USS Lincoln, after landing in a jet plane that he piloted, and hopping out dressed in a flight suit. Democrats called it a publicity stunt and decried the triumphalism -- premature triumphalism, at that.

Bush, joined by former Vice President Dick Cheney, broke ground on the presidential center on the campus of Southern Methodist University earlier this week. In a recent interview on NBC, he said of the decision to display the banner, "No question, it was a mistake." At the time, the White House said it provided the banner at the request of the U.S. Navy. And the Navy said it was intended to honor sailors who had been deployed to Iraq. In any event, it is now part of the historical record.

Permalink | Email this | Linking Blogs | Comments

George W. Not really. Former President George W. Bush got a hand from Dick Cheney Tuesday as he broke ground in Dallas on the planned George W. Bush Presidential Center, a library and policy institute. But the flat Texas landscape was far-removed from the ongoing political combat in Washington where they once engaged their Democratic foes.

Bush told the several thousand who gathered for the ceremony "there is no doubt in my mind" that Cheney was the right pick for his national ticket in 2000 and 2004, the Washington Post said. "He was a a great vice president of the United States, and I'm proud to call him friend." Former Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice was among the aides and supporters in the crowd.

Cheney, looking thinner and using a cane, joined in the love fest, defending Bush who left office with low approval ratings from an American public unconvinced of the rationale for the war in Iraq and fearful about the teetering economy. "Judgments are a little more measured than they were," Cheney said. "When times have been tough and the critics loud, you've always said you had faith in history's judgment. And history is beginning to come around."

Cheney emerged as a loud critic of the Obama administration during the president's first year in office, while Bush mostly kept silent about his successor. But Cheney has had serious heart problems, and has made few appearances in public in recent months.

The presidential center will take up 227,000 square feet on the campus of Southern Methodist University. It is slated to open in February 2013. Bush and his wife, Laura, moved to Dallas after leaving the White House in January 2009.

Permalink | Email this | Linking Blogs | Comments

George W. Bush could choose another running mate for his 2004 reelection campaign, Bush says in his soon-to-be-released memoir, "Decision Points."'

Bush writes that he considered Cheney's offer because the vice president "had become a lightning rod for criticism from the media and the left," even though he helped "with important parts" of the Republican base, the Washington Post reported Wednesday. In the end, Bush stuck with Cheney after kicking around with aides the possibility of adding former Sen. Bill Frist of Tennessee to the national ticket.
Bush memoir, "Decision Points," book jacket" />The book, due out Nov. 9, is loaded with anecdotes and behind-the-scenes nuggets from the White House, the Post said.

The 43rd president tells of errors in the Iraq war and his "sickening feeling" when no weapons of mass destruction were found in the country. At some points, starting with the 9/11 attacks and culminating with the economic crisis in 2008 -- toward the end of his last year in office -- "I felt like the captain of a sinking ship," Bush says in the book.

Permalink | Email this | Linking Blogs | Comments

Obama Related to Palin, Limbaugh? A genealogist, going back several centuries, says President Obama is distantly related to Sarah Palin on his mother's side, and is a 10th cousin once removed of one of his arch-critics, fiery conservative broadcaster Rush Limbaugh.

Utah-based Ancestry.com said it examined Obama's family tree and found he has a common matriarchal ancestor to Palin named John Smith, a 17th-century pastor in Massachusetts who opposed the persecution of Quakers, the Associated Press reported Wednesday. "He was a very socially conscious man," said genealogist Anastasia Tyler.

Limbaugh, who declared last year that he hoped Obama's presidency would fail, is said to be related through a man named Richmond Terrell, a landowner in 17th-century Virginia.

Obama's late mother, Stanley Ann Dunham, was from Wichita, Kan., and of English, Irish and German descent.

Genealogists find ancestors by tracing family trees back as far as possible. Connecting well known people through distant cousins is a time-honored exercise.

Palin, for instance, is said to be distantly related to Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, a man she is trying to defeat in Nevada by backing his Republican rival, Sharron Angle. Obama is believed to have a great-great-great-grandfather in County Offaly, Ireland. And Lynne Cheney, wife of former Vice President Dick Cheney, believes Cheney and Obama are eighth cousins (The Chicago Sun-times says they're ninth cousins, once removed). And finally, former President George W. Bush is related -- going way back -- to both Obama and Palin, according to Ancestry.com.

Permalink | Email this | Linking Blogs | Comments

Woodstock for Conservatives: Dick Cheney Is Back

Filed under: Bush Administration, Republicans, Mitt Romney, Dick Cheney, 2012 President, Woman Up, Conservatives, Tea Party, Taxes

I was in the audience at Dick Cheney's coming-out party at the Bakersfield Business Conference in California this weekend, his first big public appearance since undergoing major heart surgery in July. The former vice president has lost a great deal of weight, maybe 30 pounds, looks gaunt and walks with a cane.

After he and his wife, Lynne, settled into armchairs on the stage, he told the crowd that he couldn't have made it without her, largely because she served as his nurse and negotiator with the medical community. "I know how to ask the hard questions," she said, as she proceeded to interview her husband about their life together and the memoir he is writing with her help.

Of the presidents he served, he noted that each confronted a situation he didn't expect. For George W. Bush, it was 9/11; for George H.W. Bush, it was Desert Storm; and for Gerald Ford, it was the mere fact of becoming president, Cheney said, a line that perhaps unintentionally drew laughs. Cheney was only 34 when Ford named him chief of staff, and he doesn't think Ford understood how young he was. When Cheney brought his parents into the Oval Office, Ford kept commenting on how well-preserved the senior Cheney was, apparently not realizing he was older than his chief of staff's father.

The Cheneys are celebrating their 46th wedding anniversary, and their well-scripted exchanges included a story about how their big yellow Labrador, who was named Dave for no particular reason, disrupted a meeting with the president and top aides at Camp David by chasing President Bush's dog, Barney, who yipped and yapped at people and sometimes bit. "Dave thought Barney was an evil squirrel and went after him," Lynne explained. The vice president ended the chase by handing a sweet roll to Dave, and they thought the crisis had passed. But when they returned to their cabin, there was a knock on the door and they were informed that until further notice, Dave was barred from Laurel Cabin, which is the main meeting hall at Camp David.

The Bakersfield conference is like the Aspen Ideas Festival or Woodstock for conservatives. Headliners included Newt Gingrich, Mitt Romney, Karl Rove and Sarah Palin as the wrap-up speaker. Three thousand American flags dotted the fairgrounds in honor of the 9/11 victims, a symbol of how much the GOP defines itself around 9/11. Lynn Cheney asked her husband to describe what it was like in the White House that day, which he did as the crowd of several thousand listened attentively. He related how the Secret Service grabbed him by the back of his belt and shirt collar to propel him through a tunnel and into the President's Emergency Operations Center under the White House. He talked about issuing the order to shoot down one of the hijacked planes, not realizing at first that it was the hero passengers on Flight 93 who had crashed the plane. He recalled how he and Lynn had later flown from the South Lawn in a helicopter, the only time someone other than the president had done that. Everyone was concerned about the threat level, and the country's two top elected officials had to be kept apart in the event of another attack.

Three o'clock in the morning is worry time, Lynne said. "What do you worry about?" This was the question Cheney was waiting for, and he answered without hesitation, "That terrorists could end up in our big cities armed with nuclear weapons . . . When you're dealing with someone who wants to die for Allah, then a nuclear weapon is not a deterrent, it's an incentive." Unless I missed something, I didn't hear Cheney once utter the word Iraq or Afghanistan.

Mitt Romney gave an effective speech on American exceptionalism when it comes to the economy, and he managed to connect his experience as the CEO of the 2002 Olympic Games in Salt Lake City with 9/11. He recalled how he asked the U.S. gold medal winner in ice skating, a young Hispanic man, what his most moving moment was during the games. He said it was carrying in the American flag that had flown at Ground Zero. He thought the stadium would erupt in cheers, but he was greeted instead with a reverent silence that brought tears to his eyes, as it did to Romney's upon hearing the story, he said. Romney comes across as a capable competitor who can more than hold his ground on economic issues, and he got a rousing welcome from this conservative crowd, which seemed more interested in bread-and-butter concerns than paeans to social issues.

Sarah Palin swept in at the end of the day in her trademark red jacket to speak for "the little guy" who may not earn $200,000 -- but is smart enough to know that people who do create jobs. She warned politicians that the Tea Party is here to stay, and speaking for its followers, declared, "We don't want pandering coming out of Washington; the agenda has got to be bold." She took aim at Republicans who are "hoping the Tea Party will go away so the GOP can slink back to the status quo." She urged conservatives to think of 2010 and 2012 as one, with 2010 a time to "rebuke, reject, and repeal," and 2012 a time to "renew options, revive the free market, and restore constitutional limits." The crowd loved it, as she closed with a tribute to President Reagan and the "shining city" that he invoked as president.

I was one of a few token liberals, along with Donna Brazile and Bob Beckel, invited to give a talk (for a fee) in a smaller tent while the faithful, thousands of them, gathered to hear the Republican stars. I was scheduled against Rudy Giuliani and then Laura Bush, and needless to say I didn't get a big audience. The local Fox news that evening pointed out that people like me and Donna Brazile were there to offer another perspective, but weren't the main draw, which was an understatement. The attendees were almost uniformly white, older and conservative, and filled with the energy of a political season in which they could emerge the winners. The high point of my day was the pistachio nut ice cream that I enjoyed as I listened to California Rep. Kevin McCarthy, one of the GOP's Young Guns, explain how the Republicans, if they win the House majority, will require a congressional vote before any additional costly regulation on business could be imposed.

The former vice president appeared frail and noticeably thinner during a weekend Q&A at the Bakersfield Business Conference in California, ABC News reported.

Cheney, 69, took questions from his wife, Lynne.

"She's been my nurse, my negotiator with the medical community, and in return for all of that great help she's given me, today I've agreed to let her interview me," he said.

The California event was Cheney's second appearance this month, according to ABC. Last week he spoke at a closed press event for the Council of Insurance Agents & Brokers in Colorado Springs, Colo.

Cheney has had five heart attacks since he was 37.

Bush was a "true idealist" and a man of "genuine integrity and political courage." But Blair, who was Bush's staunchest ally in the Iraq war, reserves his warmest praise for Bill Clinton, calling the former Democratic president his "political soulmate."

In his book, "A Journey," Blair says he developed a close business and personal relationship with the conservative Bush following the Sept. 11, 2001 attacks in New York and Washington. He describes Bush as a man of "immense simplicity in how he saw the world" -- his imperative was spreading peace and freedom -- and a decisive leader. Of Dick Cheney, Blair writes that the former vice president took an "unremittingly hard line" on the use of force after 9/11, CNN said.

To this day, Blair said he does not regard the war in Iraq as a mistake, though it cost him politically in Great Britain and raised questions about his judgment even among friends, the New York Times said. "Tears, though there have been many," he writes, "do not encompass" the grief over the loss of life in the war. "I feel desperately sorry for them, sorry for the lives cut short, sorry for the families whose bereavement is made worse by the controversy over why their loved ones died, sorry for the utterly unfair selection that the loss should be theirs."

He said he's been unable to satisfy his liberal supporters "who would like me to say, 'It was a mistake but one made in good faith.' Friends opposed to the war think I'm being obstinate; others, less friendly, think I'm delusional. To both, I may say, keep an open mind."

Blair, who left office in 2007 and now serves as an envoy to the Middle East, says Clinton was a "brilliant thinker" and the "most formidable politician I had ever encountered." He even offered a defense of Clinton for his liaison with then-intern Monica Lewinsky. Bill Clinton, Blair said, has an "inordinate interest and curiosity about people," and with women "there was potentially a sexual element. And in that, I doubt he is much different from most of the male population."

"A Journey" was to go on sale in Britain Wednesday, the day after President Obama's speech formally announcing the end of the direct U.S. combat role in Iraq. British forces left combat operations behind in 2009.

Permalink | Email this | Linking Blogs | Comments

Dick Cheney Out of the Hospital After Month-Long Stay for Heart Treatment

Filed under: George W. The former vice president was released from a Fairfax, Va., hospital Tuesday after a month-long stay to treat a heart ailment.
Cheney, 69, had a left ventricular assist device -- a pump -- implanted to help his ticker keep going, the Wall Street Journal said. He has suffered five heart attacks, the first one when he was 37 and the most recent in February.
Cheney, a onetime Wyoming congressman and secretary of defense, served for eight years as vice president alongside President George W. Cheney, 69, underwent surgery last week for the heart pump, a mechanism that helps the heart do its job and which is seen as an alternative to an artificial heart procedure, the Washington Post reported Thursday.
Cheney said in a statement he began experiencing "increasing congestive heart failure" a few weeks ago. "After a series of recent tests and discussions with my doctors, I decided to take advantage of one of the new technologies available."
The small device carries some risk, as it could be subject to mechanical failure or blood clotting inside the pump, the Post said.

Permalink | Email this | Linking Blogs | Comments

George Steinbrenner Dies; Yankee Boss Gave to Nixon, Other Pols From Both Parties

Filed under: George W. To his annoyance he got the most notoriety for his donations to President Nixon.

In 1988, Steinbrenner was pardoned by President Reagan for his conviction on charges of obstruction of justice and conspiring to make illegal contributions to Nixon's 1972 reelection campaign. Steinbrenner's guilty plea brought a $15,000 fine and a ban from baseball that lasted nine months. But according to Salon, the "Boss" favored Democrats when it came to congressional races, giving $133,850 to individual candidates and party committees between 1980 and 2010. Among the beneficiaries: Rep. Charles Rangel (D-N.Y.), Sen. Chuck Schumer (D-N.Y.), former Sen. George Mitchell of Maine (a Red Sox fan), and Hillary Clinton's 2008 presidential campaign.
Steinbrenner also contributed to former President George H.W. Bush's campaigns, the 2000 Bush-Cheney Florida recount fund, former New York Mayor Rudy Giuliani and Sen. John McCain's 2008 presidential campaign.

A native of Rocky River, Ohio, a Cleveland suburb, Steinbrenner made part of his fortune as head of the American Shipbuilding Co. in Lorain, Ohio. He was often lampooned affectionately on the television series "Seinfeld," where he was played by a gruff-talking actor, always pictured from behind and fond of firing employees at the drop of a hat. Steinbrenner celebrated his 80th birthday on the Fourth of July.

Permalink | Email this | Linking Blogs | Comments

Republican Chief Michael Steele, Under Fire, Backs Away From Afghan Remarks

Filed under: House, Republicans, Barack Obama, Iraq, Dick Cheney, Gaffes, Terror, 2010 Elections, al Qaeda
Republican National Chairman Michael Steele backed away from comments putting the onus for the Afghanistan war on President Obama -- and suggesting it may be unwinnable -- but two more leading Republicans piled on the embattled party chief on Saturday.

In a clarification statement Friday, Steele said Obama had "shifted his focus" from Iraq to Afghanistan, and "for the sake and security of the free world, our country must give our troops the support necessary to win this war." History has shown that winning in Afghanistan is a difficult task, he said, but "it is also a necessary one. That's why I support the the decision to increase our troop force."

But that wasn't enough for former Vice-President Cheney's daughter, Liz Cheney, or Rep. Tom Cole, (R-Okla.), both of whom called for Steele to resign as chairman of the Republican National Committee. Cheney said she found Steele's comments "deeply disappointing and wrong," CNN reported. She said she agreed with Bill Kristol -- a former White House aide and now editor of the Weekly Standard -- that "it is time for Chairman Steele to step down."

Rep. Cole is the onetime chief of staff at the Republican National Committee and former chairman of the Republican Congressional Committee. He said in a statement to Politico that Steele's remarks were "totally unacceptable" and "it is time for him to go -- quickly."

The flap started at a political event in Connecticut Thursday night when Steele said the conflict in Afghanistan may not be winnable and, "keep in mind, for our federal candidates, this is a war of Obama's choosing. This is not something the United States had actively prosecuted or wanted to engage in." But President George W. Bush ordered U.S. troops into Afghanistan after the Sept. 11, 2001 attacks by al-Qaeda, which was based there with the consent of the Taliban government..

Permalink | Email this | Linking Blogs | Comments
