The House vote was 361-64, which was impressive enough, until you compare it to the Senate, which voted 90-5.

In fact the margin was so wide in the Senate, it had a lot of folks wondering who out there didn't think it was a good idea to eliminate double-cycle billing and predatory rate hikes on the most vulnerable Americans. Heck, even Sen. Tom Coburn (R-NRA) voted in favor of the bill-- albeit only after amending it to usher handguns into national parks.

Well here are the dissenters to the bill, along with some possible motivations:

Sen. Lamar Alexander (R-TN)- Oddly enough, Alexander objected to Coburn's gun amendment, saying even Ronald Reagan and George W. Bush wouldn't have approved. He was the only Republican to do so. That said, he didn't like the credit card part either.

Sen. John Kyl (R-AZ)- Wants to preserve Americans' rights to get junk mail stating that they're pre-approved for credit cards if they act today!

Sens. Tim Johnson (D-SD) and John Thune (R-SD)- So we've all heard of credit card giant Citibank, right? But did you realize that, since 1981, the "Citi" in reference has been Sioux Falls, South Dakota? Seriously.

Sen. Bob Bennett (R-UT)- Trying to test how far you can push Utah voters before they punish a Republican politician.

We should also mention that South Dakota wasn't the only state to lack a single "aye" vote. Both of West Virginia's senators missed the vote altogether. But to be fair, the senior senator, Robert C. Byrd, was receiving treatment at a local hospital, while the junior senator, Jay Rockefeller, was getting a payday loan at a Wheeling check-cashing store.

Permalink | Email this | Linking Blogs | Comments

Hillary Supporters Raise $8M for McCain/Palin

Filed under: Hillary Clinton, 2008 President, Fundraising, Floor Fight, Sarah Palin

A veritable who's who of the PUMA wing.

The reception for former Clinton supporters, which also was attended by Rick Davis, the McCain campaign manager, was spearheaded by Lady Lynn Forester de Rothschild, a former telecommunications entrepreneur and "Hillraiser" who brought in more than $100,000 for Mrs. Clinton's campaign; Calvin Fayard, also a former Hillraiser and longtime Democratic donor from Louisiana, and Miguel Lausell, a former senior political adviser to the Clinton campaign from Puerto Rico.

Hmmm... I was pretty sure I was told that somewhere along the line, Obama and Hillary had patched things up. $8 million is a lot of money, and McCain sure could use it. But it appears bygones are not exactly bygones with the Hillraisers from the Upper East Side.

Hillary herself has been making the morning news round and declaring that her campaigning for president days are over, (unless Obama messes up the biggest gimme in presidential history). But she doesn't have much pull with her own fiercest supporters... or does she?

Permalink | Email this | Linking Blogs | Comments

Final RNC Thoughts

Filed under: Republican Convention, Floor Fight
When I found out a couple of months ago that I was going to go the Republican convention as the "liberal" blogger and Tommy C. was going to Denver, I cursed Tommy up and down out of pure jealousy. He was going to hang with the exciting Dems and their celebrity friends and I was stuck with a bunch of stick-in-the-mud Republicans and celebrities I could care less about!

As it turns out, I'm glad I got to go to Minneapolis-St. Paul and see a side of the world that I don't relate to very much. Plus, I had the added bonus of being in a hotel that also housed Air America and the Washington Post and found enough liberal media lurking about that I at least had some oasis during part of the days and nights in the hotel bar. Oh, and MInnesotans? Fantastic people. I often forget how rude we are in the Northeast until I travel elsewhere.

The AOL crew was fantastic. Up to this point, the most actual contact I'd had with most of them were emails and a few phone conversations. This gig is part-time for most of the Political Machine bloggers and we don't work out of the NY or VA offices of AOL. My thanks to all of them for making it a great experience for me. Fellow blogger Mark Impomeni was a great help identifying obscure (to me) Republicans and is an absolute doll.

During my downtime not working on blog posts or researching for them, I was able to snap some great pictures in and around the convention area. I met a bunch of great Republican politician and operatives, media and delegates and while I may not agree with them politically, I was impressed with their willingness to open up to a liberal blogger. The overwhelming positive response to Sarah Palin was almost infectious - almost. From what I understand from some others, the Democrats in Denver were not always as open-minded toward Conservative media.

Me: There have been some conservative media types who have been overheard saying that the choice of Sarah Palin for the VP candidate is purely political choice - that she's not qualified.

Mr. Smith: Well I think they're wrong. I think she's a real good choice for the ticket - she's what we needed. I think she's going to help the ticket win.

Mrs. O'Brien: I agree I think what she does is she brings is good balance, energy and enthusiasm and good small town values as well as big state know-how to the ticket.

Me: What are you hoping to hear from Senator McCain tonight?

Mrs. O'Brien: I'm hoping what he'll do is outline more about his platform and tell us more where he thinks he intends to take the country and where he would like us as citizens to pitch in and help because its not a job for one person alone. And I hope that congress is listening, too because it's not a job that only the president does, congress needs to come and help, too They're the ones that do the bills and the laws and funding and without them on board they're the ones stopping. And may I remind people they're the ones that have the 9% approval - Sarah Palin has an 80% approval rating.

Mrs. O'Brien went on to expand on her thoughts on Congress after I mentioned that it does not look good for House and Senate Republicans this year. She is very disappointed in Nancy Pelosi was hoping for more initiative and leadership from her and less divisiveness. My thanks to Chris and Mary and I will check out the Lion's club...

The "official" New Jersey blog for the RNC, PolitickerNJ, echoes what I found among the state's elected officials, but also found some who were not so enthusiastic:

There were those not ready to sign off resoundingly on the Palin speech, lamenting what they heard as too much attitude and not enough pertinent factual information about their vice presidential candidate.

Some delegates made fast, "no comment" dashes in and out of the bar where a small but enthusiastic crowd drank and chatted while Fox News re-broadcast Palin's speech.

Others were no-shows.

"I'd like to have heard her talk about cutting taxes," admitted Assemblywoman Caroline Casagrande (R-Colts Neck).

Casagrande's thought was that Palin has a good story as a public servant. Maybe it wasn't the governor's fault, but the remarks absorbed too much of the culture of politics as celebrity rather than the politics of communicating achievement in government.

But then again, Obama has done the same thing, she conceded.

McCain and company made either the best choice in the history of Republican politics or they will crash and burn in November.

McCain desperately needed something to energize the base of the party and carve out a good chunk of independents and working class fence-sitters. One thing for certain after seeing the reaction in the hall and the commentary afterwords - he has the base now. Evangelicals and values voters have warmly embraced her. While Palin's speech was mostly ghost-written months ago, the delivery was all her own. If you like the Reaganesque "aw shucks", homey appeal approach to politics - this speech was for you...

A McCain/Palin win would be the major political coup of this century and a large part of the last. One thing is for certain - Obama, Biden and company had better have a major plan of attack coming out of convention cycle as the Republican ticket should have a good bounce and tons of momentum. It was nearly unanimous among the AOL crew here in St. Paul that the Democratic ticket now suddenly may have something to worry about. I, along with millions of others, will not be thrilled with another example of snatching defeat from the mouth of victory. Biden's post-speech reaction was weak-kneed.

Major league politics were played with these lines from Palin's speech:

I came to office promising major ethics reform, to end the culture of self-dealing. And today, that ethics reform is the law.

While I was at it, I got rid of a few things in the governor's office that I didn't believe our citizens should have to pay for.

That luxury jet was over the top. I put it on eBay.

I also drive myself to work.

And I thought we could muddle through without the governor's personal chef - although I've got to admit that sometimes my kids sure miss her. I came to office promising to control spending - by request if possible and by veto if necessary.

That's the red meat the Republican base eats up. Delivered by a young, attractive woman with a young, attractive family. This is the new face of the Republican party as Obama is the next generation of Democrat.

I don't see all roses and song for this tick pick. Many still feel that Palin was not properly vetted and the media (once so loved and now so hated by McCain) will be more than happy to pick up where they left off. Any more hint of scandal or impropriety could set this campaign right back where it started. While those on the far right are loving this game-changer, more moderate Republicans are not convinced. Who wins the power play for the party?

As a woman "of a certain age" that everyone seems to be courting lately, I can tell you this: I don't want to hear the words "sexist and misogynistic" replayed for my benefit for the next two months over comments about Palin, after just living through Hillary hell. And I know for sure that attacking a political opponent in the normal fashion during a campaign - even a girl - is normal and expected. She should not be treated any different than a man in this arena. Anything else is unfair and does us all a disservice. Heed my words, Biden..

Permalink | Email this | Linking Blogs | Comments

Palin Perseveres Through Speech Problems

Filed under: Republicans, 2008 President, Republican Convention, Floor Fight
Governor Sarah Palin's blockbuster speech to the Republican National Convention last night at the Xcel Center in St. Paul, Minnesota was not without its problems. The buzz on the ground in the Xcel Center this morning is that Palin's performance, remarkable and powerful as it was, was delivered without the aid of a teleprompter. The teleprompter operator scrolled through the applause lines in the speech, essentially stranding Palin on the stage in the middle of the biggest speech of her political career.

Palin was unfazed by the technical problems, and was not thrown off stride by another, potentially more serious problem. There was at least one and potentially two interruptions of her speech by protesters. One unidentified woman, seen being hustled off the floor by police; and judging by the commotion off-camera on the floor, perhaps a second protester tried to shout down Palin's address. Word from the arena this morning indicates that one of the protesters may have gotten close to the stage, only heightening the seriousness of the situation. But if it were not for one of the protesters being caught on camera, the audience would never have known that anything was wrong. Palin maintained her composure throughout.

The long and sustained applause Palin received when she appeared on stage had a quality of release to it. Republicans have been increasingly frustrated this week by what they characterize as the mainstream press' over-the-top and sexist attacks on Palin. Delegates and attendees clearly wanted to rebel against the treatment of their vice-presidential nominee by the sheer force of their cheers. Annette Kreitzer, the Commissioner of the Alaska Department of Administration tells Political Machine that she knew the governor was capable of an outstanding speech, but wasn't sure the atmosphere would be right.

We were standing on our chairs and still could not get a good view of the platform and our Governor because there were so many arms and signs in the air! It was electrifying. I know the Governor is capable of this kind of speech...the vibe was incredible.

Kreitzer added that the delegates were so take with Palin, they were almost apologetic to the Alaska delegation. "Many delegates came up to us afterward consoling us on losing our Governor to the nation."

Permalink | Email this | Linking Blogs | Comments

Palin Speech to Feature Bio and Policy

Filed under: Republicans, Republican Convention, Floor Fight, Sarah Palin
Alaska Governor Sarah Palin will address the Republican National Convention here at the Xcel Center in St. Paul, Minnesota, tonight at 10:30 eastern time. In what will easily be the biggest speech of her young political career, Palin will accept the Republican Party's nomination for Vice-President. No matter what she says or how she delivers the lines, however, one thing is clear. Judging from the reaction of the delegates to her selection, Gov. Palin will receive rock star treatment from the audience.

Delegates arriving early for tonight's session seem universally confident that Palin will not disappoint. One Texas delegate said that he expects the governor to do "great." He said that he expected her speech, "to erase all of the second-guessing that has surrounded her the last couple of days." An Ohio delegate agreed. She said that Gov. Palin's speech should contain lots of information about her policy stances and that she felt, "supremely confident that the McCain campaign has gotten it right with regard to her background." "I don't need to hear any more about her experience," she added. "I know who she is."

Republicans said that Palin can be expected to touch on her personal biography and experience in the speech, as well as giving viewers some insights into her stands on policy issues. Palin, who has been relentlessly criticized in the press and by Democrats over her qualifications to be president, will describe for voters some of the challenges she has faced as the governor of the nation's largest state. She will focus on her experience as an executive, and make the contrast between herself and Sen. Barack Obama, who has not served in an executive capacity in his political career.

On the issues, Gov. Palin will seek to reassure voters that she has the necessary judgment and experience to step in as president if necessary, and that she has the temperament and presence to handle a foreign policy crisis. Domestically, she will highlight her stance against corruption both in Alaska and Washington, and will make the claim that she has achieved results.

Palin is known as a strong speaker. She will need to be tonight. Republicans have been increasingly frustrated with the media coverage of Palin, and have mounted a full scale campaign to correct the record. But, ironically, the controversies may have generated more interest in Gov. Palin's speech to the convention. Republicans are counting on the speech being a real eye opener not only for the delegates, but for those tuning in at home.

Permalink | Email this | Linking Blogs | Comments

GOP Begins Palin Pushback

Filed under: Republicans, Featured Stories, 2008 President, Republican Convention, Floor Fight
It's Palin pushback day here at the Republican National Convention in St. Paul, Minnesota. Republican operatives are hopping mad over what they characterize as a spate of false, misleading, and baseless attacks in the mainstream press aimed at GOP Vice-Presidential nominee, Alaska Governor Sarah Palin. Palin will deliver her acceptance speech to the convention in prime time tonight.

A full day of activities is planned by the McCain campaign to make the case that the media treatment of the first female nominee on a Republican ticket has been over the top in its negativity. Former New York Mayor Rudy Giuliani will make the rounds of the cable networks to defend Palin, and Sen. Joe Lieberman will hold a press conference in which Republicans say that he will call on Sen. Barack Obama to denounce some of the charges being leveled at Palin by Democratic operatives. The McCain campaign will also release a television commercial today that compares Gov. Palin's experience in government to Sen. Obama's

A GOP operative tells Political Machine that the treatment Gov. Palin has received in the mainstream media has led to a virtual state of war between the party and the press.

"The liberal media is engaged in a disturbing sexist double standard against Gov. Palin. This is a clear effort to smear a conservative female star because she does not adhere to the liberal ideology of the elites who run the media. And this is one of the reasons why the American public has lost faith in the media. We predict a backlash."

At a press conference held today at the Xcel Arena, Republican women made the case that Gov. Palin is actually more qualified to be president than Sen. Obama.

Former Massachusetts Governor Jane Swift said that the focus needs to be placed on Gov. Palin's accomplishments in comparison to Sen. Obama's.

"Gov. Plain has a record of accomplishment. She has taken on the corrupt special interest in Washington and in Alaska. And she has a record of achievement. In fact, she is more prepared to be president than Sen. Obama. Palin ran a state, Obama ran a campaign."

Carly Fiorina, former head of HP and Chairman of the GOP Victory 2008 Campaign, said that Sen. Hillary Clinton's campaign in the Democratic primaries has some similarities to the current campaign. "There has been a great deal of sexism exhibited against both Sen. Clinton and Gov. Plain. American women's ears are highly tuned to sexist attacks, and they aren't going to stand for it."

The reporting on Palin has clearly gotten under the skin of the GOP and the party is making every effort to turn the tables back on the Democrats and the press. Gov. Palin's speech to the convention tonight will go a long way toward determining how successful those efforts ultimately will be.

Permalink | Email this | Linking Blogs | Comments

Bush Makes RNC Appearance

Filed under: George W. The president canceled his planned in-person speech earlier in the week so that he could monitor the federal response to Hurricane Gustav on the Gulf Coast.

Earlier in the evening, some Texas delegates shared their thoughts on what they wanted to hear from the president. Nelson Balido said that he wanted to hear a message of unity directed at, "the folks that were supporting other candidates at the beginning [of the primaries], and those who have questions about our excellent Vice-Presidential choice." Jack Wolfe, of McAllen, Texas, said that he wanted to hear about Iraq. "I want the president to talk about how well we're doing in Iraq. I want him to talk about the soldiers and how we are winning the war."

The president chose to focus his remarks on the man that hopes to succeed him, Sen. John McCain. The president said that McCain has the, "judgment, experience, and wisdom," to be president.

"I know what it takes to be President. In these past eight years, I've sat at the Resolute desk and reviewed the daily intelligence briefings, the threat assessments, and reports from our commanders on the front lines. I've stood in the ruins of buildings knocked down by killers, and promised the survivors I would never let them down. I know the hard choices that fall solely to a President. John McCain's life has prepared him to make those choices. He is ready to lead this nation."

The president kept his comments to McCain's qualities and refrained from talking about his opponent, Sen. Barack Obama. But he did throw the crowd a little red meat political rhetoric when he discussed McCain's internment in a North Vietnamese prison camp.

"John McCain's life is a story of service above self. Forty years ago in an enemy prison camp, Lieutenant Commander McCain was offered release ahead of others who had been held longer. His wounds were so severe that anyone would have understood if he'd accepted. John refused. For that selfless decision, he suffered nearly five more years of beatings and isolation. When he was released, his arms had been broken -- but not his honor.

Fellow citizens: If the Hanoi Hilton could not break John McCain's resolve to do what is best for his country, you can be sure the angry left never will.

Despite carrying approval rating in the low 30s, President Bush remains extremely popular in the Republican Party. His speech was very enthusiastically received. Mr. Balido may have gotten his wish tonight. To the extent that there is any division in the party over the nomination of McCain for president, President Bush's remarks will go a long way to solidify the party behind him.

Permalink | Email this | Linking Blogs | Comments

Delegates Want Joe

Filed under: Republicans, John McCain, Republican Convention, Floor Fight
Sen. Joe Lieberman wins one contest among the delegates to the Republican National Convention, most anticipated speaker of the evening. A majority of delegates surveyed said that they were hopeful that Sen. Lieberman, the Democratic Party's nominee for Vice-President in 2000, would help to heal partisan divides and bring the country together.

One delegate hoped that Lieberman represented the leading edge of a trend. "I think Joe could be the first of a great many Democrats who see the light and come on over to the Republican Party." Lieberman will tell the convention that his support of McCain rises above partisanship.

"What, after all, is a Democrat like me doing at a Republican convention like this? The answer is simple. I'm here to support John McCain because country matters more than party. I'm here tonight because John McCain is the best choice to bring our country together and lead our country forward. I'm here because John McCain's whole life testifies to a great truth: being a Democrat or a Republican is important. But it is not more important than being an American."

Asked about Lieberman's conventionally liberal views on most issues besides national security, the delegate said that he was willing to set those differences aside if Lieberman could help swing independent voters to voting for McCain.

Permalink | Email this | Linking Blogs | Comments

You Say You Want Revolution?

Filed under: Featured Stories, Ron Paul, Republican Convention, Floor Fight

By Denise
And we have one thousand strong right in Minneapolis, Minn. at the Target Center today.

Texas' Rep. Ron Paul's Liberty Campaign counter-convention one could not help but notice immediately the empty seats. The event's organizers had put the word out that the arena was sold out. But it appeared to be half empty. That didn't lessen the attendees' enthusiasm for Ron Paul, however, or for fringe causes that he advocates. Within minutes of crossing the threshold of the arena, several "Investigate 9/11" t-shirts could be spotted, along with others advocating a return to the gold standard of money and the abolition of the Federal Reserve Bank.

This was a day for disaffected Paul supporters to get out their frustrations over the relatively poor showing of their candidate in the Republican Party presidential primary. They applauded a range of speakers, from the head of Americans for Tax Reform, Grover Norquist, to John McManus, the president of the John Birch Society. The messages coming out of the Liberty Campaign event were mixed. Norquist spoke of the need to reduce taxes and cut federal spending to promote economic growth, and the Democratic Party's aversion to both. His speech would have been welcome at the Republican National Convention in St. Paul unlike Rockwell's. Rockwell spoke of the death of conservatism as a political movement, and the need to drive Republicans out of power until they realize the error of their ways.

Support could be found among the attendees for both major party presidential candidates. Rick Michael, of Virginia, said that he was at the rally to lend support to Ron Paul's ideal of limited government. "One mistake a lot of the country is making right now is that they are turning to the federal government as the solution solutions to every problem," he said. He cited education, and health care as examples of issues that the federal government has mismanaged. Mr. Michael said that he is voting for John McCain in November, coming around to him as a result of his selection of Sarah Palin as his running mate.

Kim Woolhouse, an alternate delegate to the RNC from Washington state, said that she was not politically active until she heard about Ron Paul. Civil liberties were her issue of most concern. "I' just worried about personal liberty," she said. "We're losing more and more of our freedoms with the PATRIOT Act and [the Department of] Homeland Security." Ms. Woolhouse said that she wasn't sure who she would vote for in the fall. She said that she could not see herself voting for Obama, but could not commit to McCain despite being a Republican delegate.

A Kentucky attendee, who declined to give his name, said that he was at the event because his wife had introduced him to Ron Paul's ideas. He said that foreign policy was his primary concern and that he was supporting Barack Obama for that reason. He said that he believed that the United States should not have a military presence in any foreign countries, and believed that Sen. Obama would make that happen. "Obama is just mincing his words," he said, referring to Sen. Obama's call for leaving some U.S. troops in the region. "He's just saying that to get elected." Asked if that perceived disingenuousness in any way influenced his opinion of Sen. Obama, the attendee said simply, "No."

It seems clear from the smaller than expected crowd, the disjointed messages, and the delegates' support for both presidential candidates, that Rep. Paul's Liberty Campaign convention is not as much about building a movement as it is about giving a forum to disaffected and disgruntled voters. Not finding an outlet in the two major parties for their political persuasion, they have placed all their faith in Paul, who is more than happy to get the attention, and the donations.

Mark Impomeni, a Republican, and Denise Williams, a Democrat, are on the ground in St, Paul to bring you their dueling political perspectives throughout the Republican National Convention. Thompson was a favorite of conservative Internet activists and bloggers during his presidential run, and judging by the reaction he received from assembled bloggers and Internet journalists, their enthusiasm for him has not been dampened by his disappointing performance on the campaign trail.

Sen. Thompson gave the group a preview of his address to the Republican National Convention, which he is scheduled to deliver to the delegates in tonight's prime time session. One focus of his remarks was on the mainstream media coverage of the presidential campaign generally, and the media's relative intensive focus on Vice-Presidential nominee Gov. Sarah Palin's pregnant daughter.

On the front page of the New York Times this morning, there are three stories dealing with Gov. Palin's children. The New York Times wouldn't know a scandal if it was walking down the street under a spotlight, unless it involves a Republican."

That is the type of folksy one-liner that endeared Thompson to so many online conservatives, and caused them so much frustration when his campaign fizzled. But Sen. Thompson saved his most interesting comments for Sen. Obama. Thompson said that Obama's experience as a senator was not as valuable as one might think. He also stated that Republicans can make a very favorable comparison between Gov. Palin's experience and Sen. Obama's.

"Our country like never before is going to have to depend on the character, personal history, and experience of the president. With a newly belligerent Russia, an ever aggressive China, this is no time to turn the keys of the car over to a 14-year old in heavy traffic.

The media has no idea about the kind of reception Gov. Palin is getting across the country. She is the kind of public servant that we all claim we want. Outsider, not from inside the beltway, will stand up to authority, will stand up to either side and is successful.

She is a perfect match for McCain and I think they're going to go to Washington, take it by the scruff of the neck and give it a good shaking.

I think that the Sarah Palin overreaction [by the Obama campaign] has allowed [Republicans] to make the comparison of the experience level of our Vice-Presidential nominee and their presidential nominee. You don't get experience by being in the Senate. You don't get foreign policy and national security experience by being in the Senate. The media wants to give a pass to anybody that's ever set foot in the senate. It is in no sense a qualification.

For example, Governor Palin doesn't have experience being wrong about the Iraq war, is that the kind of experience you want? She doesn't have experience being against the surge, which has won the war in Iraq and which the Democrats can't bring themselves to talk about. Is that the kind of experience you want?"

With yesterday's abbreviated schedule, the delegates here are wound up like a spring and ready to hear some red-meat political rhetoric. Based upon the reaction to Sen. Thompson's talk this morning, tonight's speech should be one of the more popular ones of the convention.

Permalink | Email this | Linking Blogs | Comments

Connecticut Delegation Attacked at RNC

Filed under: Iraq, Republican Convention, Floor Fight
Anti-war protesters tried to block the Connecticut delegation from entering the Xcel Center for the start of the Republican National Convention here in St. Paul. Heath Fahle, the Executive Director of the Connecticut Republican party, told the Political Machine that 80 to 100 protesters were pushing and shoving Connecticut delegates, many of them senior citizens, as they tried to enter the arena for yesterday's session. Mr. Fahle said that the protesters were chanting anti-war slogans and hurling insults and epithets at the delegates.

"The protesters sat down in the street and were physically blocking our way into the center. Several of our delegates were being physically jostled. The police moved in and positioned themselves between the protesters and the delegation and made a wall for us to walk behind as we entered the arena. Then the protesters spat at us. Chairman Healy's 80-year old mother was spat upon by the protesters.

Fahle said that the protesters were carrying homemade signs against the war. He said at least one hand written Obama sign was seen in the crowd. But the protesters were not finished harassing the Connecticut delegates. Mr. Fahle said that after the spiting incident, an unknown liquid was thrown over the line of police and onto the delegation. Eight delegates were hit with the liquid, including an 83-year old woman. Former Congressman Rob Simmons, who had stepped forward to try and protect the delegation, was also hit. Mr. Fahle said the emergency medical personnel later determined that the liquid was a mixture of bleach and water.

Mr. Fahle said that he was unaware of any arrests as a result of the altercation, but that the St. Paul police and the Secret Service were investigating.

Permalink | Email this | Linking Blogs | Comments

First Lady, Cindy McCain Appear at RNC

Filed under: Republicans, Breaking News, Republican Convention, Floor Fight
First Lady Laura Bush and Cindy McCain surprised delegates here at the Republican National Convention in St. Paul with an appearance to close out the abbreviated day of convention business. Mrs. Bush and the woman who hopes to assume her role addressed the convention and made an appeal for delegates, attendees, and viewers to get involved with relief efforts for Hurricane Gustav.

Mrs. Bush began her address by apologizing for the president, who canceled his appearance at the convention in order to deal with the storm. She said that the focus of the day had to be on the "safety and well being of those living in the Gulf Coast region." But Mrs. Bush, whose planned address to the convention was also canceled, couldn't help but throw the delegates a little red meat.

"When events such as this occur, we are reminded that we are all Americans. The president is speaking with officials at the disaster coordination center in Austin, to be sure that they have what they need from the federal government.

All of the governors from that region are strong leaders and were planning to be with us. They all also happen to be Republicans."

She introduced video messages from four of the five Gulf Coast governors: Republican Governors Rick Perry of Texas, Bob Riley of Alabama, Charlie Crist of Florida, and Haley Barbour of Mississippi. The governors thanked delegates and Americans for their efforts on behalf of storm victims.

Cindy McCain followed Mrs. Bush and received an enthusiastic welcome from the convention. She asked the delegates and viewers to join together to and aid those in need. And she provided a web address, www.causegreater.com, where delegates could go to find out how they could best help the victims of the storm. Earlier, Republican National Committee Chairman Mike Duncan turned the convention in to a modern day telethon when he asked delegates to take out their cell phones and text the message "Give" to 24357. Delegates were able to make monetary donations right from the floor. Republicans plan more opportunities for delegates to get involved in hurricane relief efforts throughout the week.

Permalink | Email this | Linking Blogs | Comments

Eyes On Storm, Louisiana Delegates Soldier On

Filed under: Republicans, Breaking News, Republican Convention, Floor Fight

The Republican National Convention's abbreviated schedule opened here in St. Paul today with all eyes on the Louisiana coast, where Hurricane Gustav made landfall earlier today. None more than in the Louisiana delegation, which despite the storm remains here at the convention, doing its work on behalf of the people of their state.

Delegate Lois Hoover, from Monroe, Louisiana, said that the delegation was very mindful of the goings on back home. "We've been very lucky so far," she said. "In my town in the Northeast part of the state, we have over 7,000 refuges in just our little town." Ms. Hoover said that the preparations for this storm far exceeded those for Hurricane Katrina, something she attributed to the state being in the hands of Republican Governor Bobby Jindal. "He's wonderful," Hoover beamed. "We're glad that he's not on the ticket. We need him home in Louisiana."

The Chairman of the Louisiana Delegation, Bryan Whener, agreed. "He was made to prepare for hurricanes," Mr. Whener said. "Jindal's done a wonderful job. He's the real deal." Whener is from New Orleans, but said that he declined the opportunity to go home to prepare for the storm in order to fulfill his duties to the delegation.

"People have to decide what their duties are. While I'm here, I'm doing my business. On my own time, I call home and handle the storm. The most important thing I can do for my city and state is to be here. Last time, for Katrina, we didn't have our act together in terms of what we needed. Here our delegation can get the word out as to what we have and what we need."
Whener said that between 10 and 20 delegates left yesterday on a plane chartered by the McCain campaign to handle storm preparations. He said that about the same number came back last night. Some have brought their families with them, evacuating them out of Gustav's way. The delegation remains enthusiastic about this convention, and their delegation section on the floor was full.

Permalink | Email this | Linking Blogs | Comments

Palin Baby Shocker: Does It Matter?

Filed under: Featured Stories, 2008 President, Scandal, Republican Convention, Floor Fight, Sarah Palin

The Palin family put out a statement saying that they are proud of their daughter and asking the media to respect her privacy.

"We have been blessed with five wonderful children who we love with all our heart and mean everything to us. Our beautiful daughter Bristol came to us with news that as parents we knew would make her grow up faster than we had ever planned. We're proud of Bristol's decision to have her baby and even prouder to become grandparents. As Bristol faces the responsibilities of adulthood, she knows she has our unconditional love and support.

Bristol and the young man she will marry are going to realize very quickly the difficulties of raising a child, which is why they will have the love and support of our entire family. We ask the media to respect our daughter and Levi's privacy as has always been the tradition of children of candidates."

Palin's nomination has brought a renewed energy to McCain supporters, especially among the religious and Evangelicals, important parts of the Republican base. Thus far, initial reports are that the story will not hurt the McCain campaign politically among this all-important group. Reached at the convention site, Erick Erickson, Editor of the influential RedState.com, said that the story may actually help McCain with the religious right. And Steve Dillard, a member of the National Catholic Steering Committee for the McCain campaign said that families of faith would embrace the Palins over the way they have handled the matter. "I think the daughter made the right choice and it shows that Gov. Palin has raised her daughter to respect the sanctity of life. Character is shown with how you act under difficult circumstances."

One GOP strategist agreed. "Palin is inoculated with religious voters. In the meantime this is something that makes her easier to relate to. She is not perfect. Her family isn't perfect. But they are loving. And they get through it together."

The Commissioner of the Alaska Department of Administration, Annette Kreitzer, said she hoped that the news would help other young girls know that it is OK to talk to their parents when they are in this difficult situation.

"I don't know the family well enough to comment beyond what Governor Palin has told Alaskans and Americans. What I'm pleased about is that Bristol was not afraid to talk with her parents about the pregnancy and I hope that other young women facing a similar situation would take courage in Bristol's decision to tell her parents. I've known a few young women who have faced this situation and I know it was difficult for them to discuss with their parents, but ultimately they and their parents were stronger for it."

Voters want to be able to identify with political candidates, and this story gives the Palin family something in common with thousands of American families. While no political campaign wants to lose control of its message, and there are indications that this story came out earlier than the McCain campaign might have liked, ultimately it does not appear to be one that the campaign should fear.

The news today that vice presidential hopeful Sara Palin's teen-aged daughter is pregnant without the benefit of marriage was released to quell rumors that Governor Palin was actually the grandmother of infant Trig.

The fact that Palin was still picked as McCain's running mate and that the campaign was fully aware of this situation when it made the offer to the Alaska Governor, in itself is quite interesting. The Palin family, full-throated Evangelicals, are experiencing what thousand of other families go through each year - the unexpected out-of-wedlock pregnancy.

The family's decision is a private and personal matter - as much as it can be. Despite the rumors and innuendo and the need to release this information for that reason, how long does anyone think it could have been hidden from the public? It was bound to come out sooner or later and better sooner lest the public continue to think there was very little vetting process with this candidate.

Palin's daughter will keep the baby and marry the father - the family-friendly answer to this vexing issue. Will this development make any difference at all to the Evangelical community? It's hard to see that it would with marriage as the expected outcome. Despite religious convictions of any kind - kids have sex and kids get pregnant.

I see that this might actually be a good place to open up dialogue about teen pregnancy, abstinence and birth control. If an Obama candidacy can make us more open about race and Clinton's run focus the dialogue on sexism and glass ceilings, perhaps the Palin family experience help us reflect on the fact that the US has the highest incidence of unplanned teen pregnancy in the developed world.

Mrs. Bush planned to meet with the remaining members of the Louisiana delegation for breakfast this morning. About a dozen delegates from the state returned home yesterday on a plane chartered by the McCain campaign so that they could deal with hurricane preparations.

Speaking from the Xcel Energy Center, site of the convention, Mrs. Bush said that the nation's eyes were rightly turned to the Gulf Coast region today. She also predicted that the response to Gustave would not be much improved over Katrina three years ago last week.

"We've learned a lot of lessons that will serve the United States very well in any kind of disaster and not just a hurricane. This time people evacuated and I think that's going to make a huge difference to keep people safe."

Mrs. Bush was set to address the delegates tonight. But the Republican National Committee has suspended the political portion of the program for today. That may have particularly disappointed Mrs. Bush, as she said that she hoped to rebut some of the statements made against her husband last week at the Democratic convention in Denver.

Permalink | Email this | Linking Blogs | Comments

A Delegate's Goodie Bag

Filed under: Republicans, Republican Convention, Floor Fight
The vast majority of Americans have never been to a political convention, and the perception that delegates are wined and dined by various special interests and corporations is common. While that may be true for party big wigs and elected officials, the gifts lavished on individual delegates are comparatively modest.

Each delegate at the Republican Convention received a gift tote bag, sponsored by Coca-Cola and the Southern Company, containing an assortment of small promotional items from various companies. The bags are advertising vehicles meant to generate good will for the companies more than than they are tools to woo special favors. The bag contains the following:

2 bags of Chex Mix snack mix
2 chewy granola bars (Fiber One and Nature's Valley)
2 Nature's Valley crunchy granola bars (not pictured but delicious)
3 Republican National Convention Post-It note pads
2 luggage tags from Delta and Northwest Airlines
1 AT&T gift card and special issue convention pin
1 Ford Escape Hybrid key chain light/compass/whistle
1 package of Sweet Alyssum seeds from Chesapeake Energy
1 package of Truvia artificial sweetener
1 windmill pin from the American Wind Energy Association
1 Windjammer umbrella
1 commemorative water bottle from VISA and US Bank
1 coupon book to the Mall of America
1 package of breath mints from UPS
1 box Limited Convention Edition Kraft Macaroni and Cheese

The bags may make delegates feel special and may even result in better sales of these products contained therein. But they are not a down payment on greater access to lawmakers and people of influence. American politics has not yet degenerated to the point where political favors can be bought for a couple of bags of chips and some granola bars.

Permalink | Email this | Linking Blogs | Comments

Major Changes to RNC Schedule

Filed under: Breaking News, Republican Convention, Floor Fight
Due to concerns about the appearance of partisan merry-making as Hurricane Gustav heads toward the Gulf Coast and New Orleans, the Republican National Convention schedule has been scaled back considerably. Already we've heard that President Bush and Vice President Cheney will not attend tomorrow's gathering at the Xcel center and the Louisiana and Mississippi delegations may be leaving early with a dozen or so scheduled to leave shortly on a chartered flight.

At a press conference a short time ago, the McCain campaign's Rick Davis and Republican Party Chairman Mike Duncan confirmed that they will proceed with the Convention in abbreviated fashion with only required business - call to order, credentials committee, adopting rules, electing officers and adopting platform - all to end by approximately 5:30 PM local time. Tuesday's schedule has yet-to-be determined due to the unpredictable nature of the storm. Mr. Davis is hopeful that the roll call vote will happen during it's regularly scheduled time and offered the possibility that some of the remaining time could be spent for disaster fund-raising.

A quorum is required to nominate and according to Mike Duncan that needs to be a majority of delegates + 1.

Davis committed to regular press availabilities to keep everyone updated.

John McCain confirmed to media via satellite from St Louis that activities will be truncated to put all attention and energy on the relief efforts Gulf Coast.

Permalink | Email this | Linking Blogs | Comments
