Born to a long line of Baptist preachers, he became the biggest snake oil salesmen of them all. Although known as a full-bore right wing nut, he broke with Nixon on Cambodia and (so he claimed) Joe McCarthy on some minor point or another.

His father was murdered by a gang of highwaymen, in 1921. He himself was arrested by federal police in 1951 -- for inexplicably trying to break into Argonne National Laboratory, a federal atomic research facility in Illinois.

But that wasn't the end for this weird American. His radio show and segments would be heard nationwide for another six decades. His name was ... Paul Harvey. And now you know ... he's dead.

The legendary American broadcaster died early Saturday at his winter home in Phoenix. He was 90 years old.

Paul Harvey's dad really was a Baptist preacher who really was murdered by a gang of thugs when Paul was just three years old. And Paul Harvey really was arrested for trying to break into a nuke lab -- he supposedly did it as a radio stunt, to show how the Commies could get inside Illinois federal facilities or something.

Harvey started his radio career in Oklahoma and began working for ABC in Chicago, in 1944. With the help of his producer and wife, Lynne Harvey, he became a national broadcaster eventually heard on more than 1,200 stations.

The best thing about Paul Harvey -- humble old Paul Harvey with his solid family life and one (just one!) wife who was with him until her death in 2007 -- is that his peak audience was millions bigger than Rush Limbaugh's largest audience.

Fat sex-creep Rush peaked with 20 million listeners in 2003 (all downhill since then!), while Paul Harvey peaked with 22 million. And while Paul Harvey was long mocked by hipsters and comedians, he sure wasn't hated. In fact, Paul Harvey was one of the most admired people in America for half a century.

Rush Limbaugh is despised by most Americans, while his only fans are mouth-breathing angry losers.

So, farewell, Paul Harvey. Farewell to your odd little stories, outrageously twisted wingnut version of current events, and the commercials you wove so seamlessly into your "news" that the old and feeble-minded could never really tell if those mattresses and mail-order radio sets were part of the day's headlines or not.

Ken Layne is executive director of the Radio Legends Museum of North America. What else? Ah, right, the Year In Review column! It's the proudest tradition in American Journalism, when your Main Stream Media gatekeepers throw together a quick retrospective of whatever happened during the year, before we all take off for a long winter vacation -- no "Christmas" for us, thanks! We're the media, after all.

We shall not soon forget this year that's almost over, 2008. Not until early 2009, anyway, when the real horror begins.

So let's sit back while we can still afford computers, and chairs, and enjoy a comical collection of the year's biggest, lamest failures. From snarling rat-faced would-be terror-dictator Rudy Giuliani to snarling snowbilly doofus Sarah Palin, this was truly the year when (GOP) Hope was Crushed.

Fred Thompson: Oh lord, this guy. The Republicans' chances were so absurdly dismal in '08 that somebody (Bill Kristol is usually behind these dumbo ideas) decided the last best Hope of the Grand Old Party was this lazy-ass old Southern Plantation Gentleman with his Gucci slippers and Trophy Wife and negative IQ. Why? Because he was on the TeeVee, of course! Sadly, he wasn't on Hee-Haw or NASCAR, so GOP primary voters had never heard of him.

Lesson Learned: If you're going to save your ridiculous redneck part of your rich-people party with an actor from the television, some fancy law program with big words is probably not the place to find your savior.

Mitt Romney: Sure, he's vain and elitist and the liberal ex-governor of Taxachusetts and, probably, an android. Sure, he speaks French and used to have about $250 million, before his failed campaign and the stock market collapse took most of his money. But Mitt's greatest sin was his religion, Mormonism. He could not prove to these people, these GOP primary voters, that he was a for-real Jesus Freak, because he belonged to this scary religion ... possibly the same scary religion practiced by old what's his name, Osama bin Laden!

Lesson Learned: If you're going to run a Mormon candidate and win the Evangelicals, do your Mormon-financed anti-gay marriage campaign first.

Rudy Giuliani: Speaking of gays, this smug crook actually lived with a bunch of homosexual men, in New York, recently! He also liked to dress up like various ladies and sing show tunes. Also, this is the dumb jerk who built his emergency headquarters IN THE WORLD TRADE CENTER, which had already been bombed by terrorists. And while America was grieving the 9/11 dead, Rudy was canoodling with his mistress on the NYPD's tab! Rudy made the New York police chauffeur this woman around Manhattan and up to the Hamptons, as rancid smoke poured out of Ground Zero! He divorced one of his wives on the teevee news! His own children wouldn't endorse his candidacy.

Lesson Learned: There are some things not even Republicans will tolerate.

Sarah Palin: Is she really gone? The Guardian Angel of Comedy looked down upon America last summer and said, "Yea, verily, you people are screwed. If any nation ever needed two months of non-stop laughs, it is you people, you sad losers." And lo, Sarah Palin appeared. We will never see her kind again. How dumb is Sarah Palin? She makes Fred Thompson look smart, that's how dumb!

But anybody can be dumb -- most people are, in fact. Palin's superpower was her insane ambition and boundless thievery. This is a person who charged Alaskan taxpayers a per diem so she could sleep at her own house! When the wealthy old GOP donors cut off her $300,000 shopping spree, she made her own staff pay for her luxury clothes, on their personal credit cards!

Lesson Learned: None. She'll be back, probably as the 2012 candidate for whatever dingbat fringe party will have her on the ticket. She is absolutely convinced she'll be president of something, eventually.

Ken Layne is an East Coast Republican scholar who regularly attends Georgetown cocktail parties with other Moderate Conservative Rich People who are actually competent, which is why they all work for the Obama Administration, now. He is Executive Editor of Wonkette, a foreign policy quarterly.

Permalink | Email this | Linking Blogs | Comments

Killjoys Nix Sub-Zero Inaguration Camping on Washington Mall

Filed under: Barack Obama, Fred Thompson, Featured Stories
Via The Washington Post:

Federal officials said yesterday that no one will be allowed to camp overnight on the Mall before the presidential inauguration and that spectators will be barred from staking out spots on the parade route until 7 a.m.

Siting "security concerns" and a whole lot of other bureaucratic nonsense, legions of Obama fans will now be prevented from pitching their Patagonia pup tents and unrolling their sleeping bags in the spirit of sub-zero patriotism. It is anticipated that 3-5 million revelers will pour into a frigid DC for the festivities. A great many of that number will need a place to sleep on the 19th, and there's no word on the occupancy limit on Fred Thompson's 1 BR apartment which will set you back $30,000 for 5 nights.

Seriously, without the camping option, where are these people going to go? Area hotels have long ago been sold out. Mercifully, DC's city council has extended last call at bars until 5 a.m. But that means two hours of aimless, pre-dawn wandering by Obama's zombie herd.

The nation's capitol should be quite a sight at around 6 a.m.

Permalink | Email this | Linking Blogs | Comments

Rent Fred Thompson's Apartment: Five Nights for $30,000

Filed under: Republicans, Barack Obama, Fred Thompson, Featured Stories, Humor

Yes, the place to be this January is most definitely Washington DC. Former Presidential candidate and all around grumpy old man, Fred Thompson, is doing just that. Had Fred Thompson had more than a fraction of Mitt or Rudy's money and the energy for more than two events a week. As it is, he just reminds conservatives why they flocked to him over the summer of 2007. Easily the best and most forthright advocate of fearless Reagan conservatism on the political scene today.

Here's Fred doing what he does best. It's excellent:

There might be a few swing voters open to the message, but it has to be constant, deliberate and consistent. As per usual both Fred Thompson and even Joe the Plumber are far better advocates of mainstream conservatism than McCain has been himself.

Inexplicably Fred stopped doing these long form messages when it was really necessary for him to, you know, actually win a primary. Not that I'm bitter...

There are a few things that I thought were worth noting.

Mainly, I wanted to highlight the presence of young, upstart correspondent Mo Rocca. I know how I cringe whenever I see eight year old footage of myself, and I'm hoping he does the same.

As I watched the piece, I also noticed that there have been only subtle changes to the GOP landscape. The cast of characters has changed very little.

Most remarkable, though, was candidate George W. Bush, in the background at the 2 minute mark, claiming foreign policy experience due to his state's proximity to Mexico. The more things change...

var gaJsHost = (("https:" == document.location.protocol) ? Along the way, he demonstrated an ignorance of the definitions of the word "martyr," and suggested that the Supreme Court is engaged in an insurrection against the other 2 branches of government.

The whole thing has become a crashing bore for those of us with brain cells, as the entire enterprise uses a deliberate and fundamental misreading of Barack Obama's position on terrorism as its fulcrum.

Damn, I think I picked something up from Thompson. Anyway, the highlight for me was unloading the question I had wanted to ask Rudy Giuliani, but didn't get the chance to, on Barack Obama's assembled experts. From yesterday's conference call with Susan Rice, Greg Craig, and Adam Smith:
[Q] Hi this is, Tom [inaudible] quick question, [inaudible]. They mentioned Osama Bin Laden being granted habeas corpus rights and Rudie Juliani even said that he found it (inaudible) amazing I guess what I'm wonder is do you have any idea what Juliana and John McCain think is the worst thing that could happen (inaudible)He goes in front of a judge, and boom! What happens?

Weird transcript, I know. It's from one of those voice recognition programs that can never understand you when you're trying to pay your cable bill. I thought I'd leave it as is, since it's funnier that way, and who am I to argue with it?I really wanted to get Rudy's take on it, because I bet it would have been interesting, but that call was really short, and unlike Fred Thompson, lots of people want to talk to Rudy.

I had a pretty good idea that the answer would be some variation of, "The judge would bang the gavel, say a few words for the TV cameras, like Judge Larry from the Anna Nicole Smith hearing, and then the guards would drag him back to his cell."

The pleasant surprise here, though, was Susan Rice swooping in at the end to point out that all of this is a moot frakking point, because Bin Laden is still at large, and John McCain is too chicken to go into Pakistan to get him. (I added that last part. McCain actually says now that he wasn't criticizing Obama for wanting to go into Pakistan, only for saying he wanted to go into Pakistan.)

Anyway, here's the rest of the (humorously titled) Verbatim transcript of the exchange.

Well what would happen there is that you have ample ground to hold him and if (inaudible) none of this would even happen until Osama bin laden wound up either in Guantanamo or in the United States if we brought him back. If we brought him back if anyone (inaudible) Juliana or John McCain (inaubile) that they believe our (inaudible) osama bin laden saying there were no grounds whatsoever to hold him it is a ridiculous argument that distracts from the larger issues that we all have raised here

Congressman that's great now let me just add to that that there is (inaudible) which will respect osama bin laden and so that the hypothetical question that's being raised here is "hey if you capture him alive " he he is transported out of wherever he is (inaudible) captured (Guantanamo ) and then you can raise the question about Guantanamo. But I agree with congressman smith that I have no doubt that there will be no problems (inaudible) responsible for murdering 3,000 people

As you point out there is a authorization of the use of force to kill bin laden not occurred 7 years later under George Bush in fact our efforts in that regime have been (inaudible) and it was Barack Obama who made the point very forcefully (inaudible) that when he is president and we have actual intelligence about high (inaudible) al quida targets like bin laden and the host government is unable or unwilling to act that he will act and take the part in (inaudible) John McCain criticizes that approach and yet he suggests that others have a long (inaudible) approach-that's completely a distortion of reality of barrack obama's approach and it reveals a great deal about John McCain's approach

Permalink | Email this | Linking Blogs | Comments

Everyone on the McCain Bandwagon

Filed under: Endorsements, Fred Thompson, John McCain, 2008 President

Fred Thompson is the latest to stump for McCain:

Former GOP presidential candidate and close McCain friend, Fred Thompson, is set to join the presumptive GOP nominee during his visit to North Carolina next week. Since losing the South Carolina primary on Jan. 18, Thompson has been absent from the limelight-even choosing to drop out of the race via written statement.

McCain is set to make a timely visit to the Tar Heel State, where primary voters go to the polls on Tuesday, and hopes to scoop up some media coverage. He is set to hit Charlotte on Monday and deliver a speech at Wake Forest University in Winston-Salem the next day.

In recent weeks, McCain has campaigned with both Mitt Romney and Mike Huckabee. While there was a lot of VP buzz when the AZ Senator was joined by Romney and Huckabee, expect a lot less around Fred-the former TN Senator even told Fox News last week that a number 2 slot is "not in the cards."

Which means of the top four candidates that didn't win the nomination, all of them have or will be on the straight talk express. It's favor currying, it's showing party loyalty, and unity, and it's definitely part of politics, no matter how we all feel about the end result.

It's also something to think about for the Democrats in the heat of a contentious primary of their own. It's hard to imagine now, but in October, Hillary will be stumping for Obama or Obama will be stumping for Hillary.

Permalink | Email this | Linking Blogs | Comments

The Republican VP Contenders: The Rivals

Filed under: Republicans, Fred Thompson, John McCain, Mitt Romney, Mike Huckabee, 2008 President, Veepstakes
Former Sen. Fred Thompson (Tenn.)

Former Senator Fred Thompson of Tennessee is the lawyer, turned actor, turned politician whose entry into the presidential primary last year was greeted with so much fanfare. Throughout the spring and summer of 2007, when former mayor Rudy Giuliani was leading the race and Sen. McCain's campaign was floundering, conservatives were clamoring for a true Reagan conservative to throw his hat in the ring. Thompson eventually did so in early September, after teasing Republican primary voters with a lengthy exploration period and a few false alarms. His campaign was never as popular after he announced, however, as it was before and he was unable to finish higher than third in any state before dropping out of the race.

Thompson, 65, did develop a consistently conservative reputation as a candidate and displayed a no-nonsense, if a bit laid back, style of campaigning. He was alone among the Republicans in developing plans based on issues and won high praise for his initiatives from socially and fiscally conservative interest groups alike. He won the endorsement of the national Right to Life Committee and numerous state committees as well. His immigration plan was the toughest of all the candidates, a possible stumbling block for him to a selection as McCain's running mate. He is a staunch supporter of the War in Iraq and the Bush tax cuts. Thompson endorsed McCain after leaving the race in his typically low-key style, issuing a press release on a Friday that received hardly any notice.

Thompson's main assets are his conservative positions and the respect he holds among members of the Republican Party's base. He would help McCain in the South, where voters are very conservative and McCain's history of working with Democrats could be a liability. His age makes a selection unlikely, however. But a position in a McCain Administration as a cabinet secretary or senior adviser is a real possibility.

Gov. Mike Huckabee (AR)

Mike Huckabee of Arkansas is the silver-tongued, folksy former governor of Arkansas whose unlikely nomination campaign lasted longer than any of his better known competitors. Huckabee remained in the race well past the time that it was mathematically impossible for him to capture the nomination, however, many observers believe that he did not hurt Sen. McCain in doing so. Huckabee rose to prominence on the strength of his debate performances, coming out of nowhere to have the most memorable quips and attacks on his rivals and Democrats. Huckabee's two signature issues on the campaign trail were Christian values and tax reform. He was a champion of right-to-life activists, who saw disturbing weaknesses in all of the other contenders and welcomed Huckabee's unashamed religious perspective on the issue. Huckabee was an early supporter of the Fair Tax, a national sales tax that would replace the income tax system, and abolish the Internal Revenue Service.

Huckabee, 52, served a governor for ten years, and during that time built a record that some fiscal conservatives questioned. The Club for Growth, a fiscal watchdog was unrelenting in its criticism of him, and the candidate responded in kind. Huckabee was criticized for raising taxes while governor, although he maintained that he actually cut more taxes than he raised and that the revenue was needed for core government functions like road building and infrastructure improvements. He was also criticized as being soft on illegal immigrants for advocating a plan to give the children of illegals the same financial benefits for education as the children of legal parents.

Huckabee's selection as McCain's running mate would help McCain among Christian conservatives and evangelicals. Huckabee is an ordained Baptist minister and has great respect in the devout community. But during the primaries, he was unable to reach beyond this group in significant numbers and may be seen as having a limited appeal. He could help McCain win the state of Arkansas, where he is broadly popular, however, Huckabee seems destined for a different role in the Republican Party, and may not accept an invitation to align with McCain right now.

Gov. Mitt Romney (Mass.)

Mitt Romney of Massachusetts, once thought to be the conservative standard-bearer in the Republican Party primary field, has been mentioned as a potential running mate for Sen. McCain. Romney has an impressive resume in private and public life. As the head of Bain Capital, Romney amassed a fortune in investments and through the chain business supply store Staples. He has a reputation as a legendary CEO and is a recognized expert on business efficiency. He turned around the struggling Salt Lake City Olympics in 2002 after an International Olympic Committee bribery scandal threatened to derail the games. He won election to the governorship in is adopted home state of Massachusetts, one of the nation's most liberal states, after a failed challenge to Sen. Ted Kennedy.

As a candidate for president, Romney, 61, was not able to settle on a consistent message until very late in the race. His past statements on abortion and immigration, and his Massachusetts health care plan, lauded as a national model when it was introduced, won him skepticism among conservative primary voters. He was viewed either as the conservative champion in the field, or an opportunistic politician saying what was necessary to gain the nomination. Toward the end of his run, he focused almost exclusively on the economy and developed some traction as a result, but it was ultimately not enough to undo the damage from a lack of an identifiable narrative earlier in the campaign.

Although many conservative pundits are pushing Romney as the ideal running mate for McCain based on the belief that McCain needs help on economic philosophy, his selection is highly unlikely. Romney and McCain fought a bitter primary battle that at times became personal. While Romney did endorse McCain in a Boston press conference after quitting the race, and has stated publicly that he would accept a selection as McCain's Vice-President, the two men are not close. Romney is young enough, and rich enough, to mount another campaign for president in four years if McCain is unsuccessful in November.

For profiles of additional contenders see The Governors, and The Conservatives.

Permalink | Email this | Linking Blogs | Comments

Worst. Today's Florida primary marks another milestone in the GOP race for the nomination. By all accounts, including his own, Rudy Giuliani is poised to drop out of the contest if he finishes behind Mitt Romney and John McCain. If polls are to believed (and there's every reason not to believe them) Rudy is currently fighting it out for a third place finish with Mike Huckabee.

Of course, "America's Mayor" long ago laid out his strategy for all to see. He would fore-go Iowa, New Hampshire, Wyoming, Nevada and South Carolina, waiting ever patiently for Florida. There he'd spring his electoral trap, snag a win, and be propelled into Super Tuesday with the proverbial wind at his back. The problem, of course, is that with their wins in the early contests McCain, Romney, and Huckabee came to dominate the airwaves. It doesn't take a genius to figure out that the free press generated from a victory is more than even Mitt Romney's fortune can buy.

Another Republican also-ran, Fred Thompson, worked up a cagey strategy for victory. His grand design was to sit back and siphon as much free press as he could from his rivals tanks by playing coy about whether he'd ever even enter the race. In the process, he kept building up expectations. Hungry for a savior, Republican pundits watched Law & Order and dreamed of a Reagan-esque future. It wasn't to be. At his very first debate in October, Thompson proclaimed, after fumbling and freezing before the cameras, that he saw "no reason to believe that we're heading for an economic downturn."
With Fred Thompson dropping out of the Republican primary race this week the nearly universal sentiment in the media was "Great hopes for the next Reagan and all we got was - Fred".

When I heard of Thompson's bail, I immediately thought of Chris Nandor, who you all met here, the singer/songwriter behind the CNN-YouTube Republican Debate opening song back in November, chairman of the 39th District Republicans in Snohomish County, WA, blogger, Perl programmer/author and Fred Thompson supporter.

I truly wondered what happened with the campaign that wasn't - outside of the media hype and destruction - and I sent Chris an email asking how it looked from a Thompson supporter's view. This conversation happened with some back and forth emails over the past two days.

Me: What's your reaction to Fred Thompson dropping out?

Chris: Thompson obviously had no chance to win a majority of delegates going
into convention. However, Huckabee, Giuliani, and Paul have no chance
to do that either, and none of them has a chance to be a running mate
of someone else, nor to win at a brokered convention (the party would
split in two or three large pieces if any of them got the nomination;
it won't happen).

Romney and McCain obviously have the only real chance to win a
majority of delegates going into convention, but if neither of them
does, which is likely, the question is, can either of them win a
consensus AT convention? So many people hate McCain and Romney, it's
unclear.

I think one of them can, but if not, then that left Thompson as a
potential consensus candidate, similar to Lincoln in 1860, who was
third in the delegate count, but who was the only one of the four who
wasn't hated by more than half the delegates.

Of course, it is more likely that either McCain or Romney will be able
to pull a consensus together. But depending on who the delegates are,
what their feelings are, it is quite possible they won't.

All that just to say that on the one hand, it seems a bit foolish for
Thompson to drop out, because he still has a chance to win at
convention. But on the other hand, he might stand a better chance to
win at convention if he isn't actively campaigning. :-)

Me: Also, what do you think contributed to Thompson being so lackluster on the campaign trail? That obviously had an effect, rightly or wrongly. We shouldn't vote personality, but we do...

Chris: As to lackluster, I didn't think he was. I realize he seemed that way
to many people, but I think much of that was the media. They wanted
him to be something he isn't. He would get on the stump and talk
about federalism and the voters would be listening and nodding their
heads in approval and the media would be falling asleep.

Obviously not all the blame goes to the media -- at root, it is still
the candidate's job to win despite whatever the media is doing -- but
I think that's a big part of what happened.

Me: Who will you support now or will you remain neutral until the General?

Chris: Right now I am still considering voting for Thompson.

So, a thoughtful supporter agrees that a candidate didn't catch the attention of the media. In the run-up to Fred actually announcing pundits all jumped on the bandwagon. Recall Tweety Matthews:

Can you smell the English leather on this guy, the Aqua Velva, the sort of mature man's shaving cream, or whatever, you know, after he shaved? Do you smell that sort of -- a little bit of cigar smoke? You know, whatever

As quickly as the pundits crowned him the next Reagan, they pulled it back once their tiny lizard brains figured out this campaign would not be The Hunt for Red October or an episode of "Law and Order".

Permalink | Email this | Linking Blogs | Comments

Fire in the Belly: Reagan v. Much is spot on, but he gives too much ground on one point. Critiquing Thompson's "fire in the belly" problem, he notes that Thompson's supporters point out that Fred shared a laid back management style with the Gipper. Ruffini says point taken, but does cite a couple of moments of Reagan intensity. I say whoah, are we talking about the same Reagan? Laid back in management style, ok. But laid back in approach to moral leadership? You don't alter the trajectory of a political generation by being laid back about what you came to town to do.

Here's a clip of Reagan's speech before the British Parliament in 1983. Here, he articulates what was by then a 40 year personal fight with communism, and which would continue another six years and end in triumph. This is the speech where he declared, "We will not defeat communism: we will transcend communism. We will leave it on the ash heap of history." My, those were the days. Anyone who doesn't understand the longing among Republicans for a new Reagan must have slept through the 1980s.

Permalink | Email this | Linking Blogs | Comments

Breaking: Fred Thompson Out [UPDATED]

Filed under: Fred Thompson, 2008 President

This was totally expected, but still, it's a sad day for conservatives.

"Today I have withdrawn my candidacy for President of the United States. I hope that my country and my party have benefited from our having made this effort. Jeri and I will always be grateful for the encouragement and friendship of so many wonderful people," Thompson said in a statement.

Now conservatives will have to choose between two economic liberals (McCain and Huckabee) one former social liberal (Romney) and one current social liberal (Giuliani).

Early polls in Florida are indicating that most Fredheads are defecting to Romney. We'll know soon if that holds true.

UPDATE:

Pat Ruffini at Townhall says, according to his poll, Thompson voters go to Romney, by a large margin:

Romney 74%
Giuliani 15%
McCain 7%
Huckabee 5%

Carl Cameron is now saying that the entire Fred Thompson phenomenon was something of an accident, and buoyed by the general dissatisfaction at the GOP field:

Those insiders have now lifted the conditions on our conversations. From March to August of 07 through postponed announcement days, staff changes, firings, resignations and general disarray the Thompson camp was stunned by the incredibly positive response and didn't really know how to manage it. The trial balloon soared mighty high and he found himself being dragged into a race that he was not even sure how to run.

He took third in Iowa and Third in South Carolina, after which his aides openly suggested the #2 slot on the ticket. The circle has been closed, and Fred Dalton Thompson is waiting to see if he gets the call from the eventual nominee.

Which explains a lot about why his campaign never went anywhere.

Bizzyblog has thoughts "on now what?"

Permalink | Email this | Linking Blogs | Comments

Fred Thompson Ditches Campaign Trail

Filed under: Fred Thompson, Breaking News, 2008 President

In breaking news, Fred Thompson formally announced on his Web site today that he is dropping out of the presidential race:

"Today I have withdrawn my candidacy for President of the United States. No doubt. But the results in the South Carolina GOP primary this past Saturday indicate strongly that they had their desired effect. In a squeaker, Huckabee lost to John McCain by a margin of 33-30, with Thompson finishing a distant third with 16 percent of the vote. Those 16 points almost certainly came directly out of Huck's hide. "Fred Thompson, John McCain's lap dog, came down here and definitely hurt the Huckabee vote, no doubt about that," said David Beasley, the state's former governor and Huckabee's local campaign chairman, in the aftermath.
But according to this piece in Politico, it's Huckabee who is a stalking horse for McCain, knowing full well that he is no longer really a candidate for presidency, but is really a vote drainer on the social right from Romney, thus running interference for McCain.

This -- along with Huck's ongoing brownnosing in McCain's direction -- has led some to conclude that he's in fact angling for a VP or cabinet position.

"It's like having an extra man on the field," said neutral Republican strategist Greg Mueller, borrowing a timely football analogy. "The fact that this has not gotten down to two or even three people has helped McCain immensely. The more the other candidates stay in the race, the more they keep harvesting votes from each other."

"It's pure mathematics," observed GOP consultant Chris LaCivita, who is also uncommitted in the race. "You've got three competing for one group and one competing for the other," he said of the split competition for conservatives and McCain's sole claim on moderates.
Whether that is the intent or not, it's clearly the actual effect. So who's the lapdog? The truth may be that they both are. Huckabee clears out Romney, and Thompson clears out Huckabee, and McCain runs through the secondary nearly untouched.

Permalink | Email this | Linking Blogs | Comments

Focus on Fred: Profile of a False Start

Filed under: Fred Thompson, Primaries, 2008 President

As Frank Davies wrote in the Mercury News: "The Fred Thompson campaign was great - until it started."

Fred Thompson, who flirted with the title of heir apparent to the Reagan legacy, inspired hesitant hope and enthusiasm early last summer when rumors surfaced of his potential candidacy. The field of GOP candidates offered no option for true conservatives which did not require some form of compromise and discomfort. Thompson, in his folksy, charming manner, reservedly "offered" (almost sacrificed) himself as the conservative candidate - a peasant-leader tack which might have resonated with a public dissatisfied with aristocratic leaders.

The 4th of July was the crest of the Thompson wave. Rumors circulated that he would announce his candidacy on that day, in full blaze of red, white and blue glory. Even if a bit obvious and egregious, the prospect was ... folksy and charming. And then, the moment passed. It seemed that Fred couldn't muster the conviction to enter the race.

But then he did enter the race - on a day and in a manner which I don't recall at the moment.

Thompson followed his entry with a lackluster campaign schedule which promoted the idea that the 65 year-old senator-turned-actor couldn't be bothered with the grueling hours of constant hand-shaking and baby-kissing. He limped into Iowa and quietly proceeded away with a tepid 3rd place finish.

While Thompson showed a spark of life in the South Carolina debate (James Joyner quipped that he should have been checked for performance-enhancing substances), an evening does not make a campaign (though, of course, it could break one). Thompson's slight surge only profited him a solid 4th place finish in the South Carolina primary.

And then there was the South Carolina concession speech that wasn't:

Again, the electorate is left wondering whether Thompson is actually still in the race. Such a dismissive, relaxed approach to political office is perhaps refreshing, but hardly inspiring. Thompson's gamble was inartfully played, and he failed to capture the moment at the dawn of his campaign. Having misstepped in July, Thompson never regained his footing.

The candidate is now expected to return to Tennessee in order to tend to his ailing mother. While there, he will surely take stock of his options as a presidential candidate. While he might attempt to extend his gambit until super Tuesday on Feb. 5, he would be unlikely to score sufficient delegates to elevate him to the "king-maker" status which John Edwards is seeking among the Democrats. Rather, Thompson may be expected to announce his withdrawal from the comfort of his native (folksy) Tennessee.

Permalink | Email this | Linking Blogs | Comments

Fred Hits White House for Gun Control Brief

Filed under: Fred Thompson, 2008 President, Guns

I was wondering when any of the GOP candidates would hit on this, it seemed to be just awfully low hanging fruit in a primary when any edge could make the difference. Well today Fred hits it, as reported by Redstate:

The Fred Thompson for President, South Carolina bus tour reached Spartanburg today, where the Law & Order TV star candidate fielded questions at Papa's Breakfast Nook from Charlotte, N.C.'s WBT-AM radio talk show host Jeff Katz.

Asked his opinion of the Second Amendment and the Solicitor General's request that the DC Circuit Court remand the appeal back to the trial court for "fact-finding", the lawyer turned Senator from Tennessee said the Bush Administration was "overlawyering" and stated that he opposed remand and that the case should move forward to the U.S. Supreme Court.

And he has it exactly right, which is one of the reasons that despite his current perception, he is the only real conservative in the race, and as such, should have been the one that got the NRO nod instead of recently-saw-the-light Mitt Romney.

Fred's still third back in the pack for South Carolina though, but at least he isn't cracking on confederate flags.

Permalink | Email this | Linking Blogs | Comments

Fred, Mitt & John's New South Carolina Ads

Filed under: Ads, Fred Thompson, John McCain, Mitt Romney, 2008 President
Palmetto State voters are getting a renewed charge of political spots this week in advance of Saturday's GOP Primary Election. Just today alone, there are 17 presidential campaign stops in South Carolina, each aimed at winning the First in the South Primary. The latest ads are from Thompson, Romney and McCain.

Fred Thompson has a :30 second TV ad airing in South Carolina titled "Always."

Mitt Romney is airing a :30 second ad previously run in Michigan, in South Carolina, titled "Asian Tiger."

And John McCain has a :30 second ad airing in South Carolina titled "Service."

Thompson's ad continues his tradition of a to-camera pitch on a kitchen sink pile of "conservative" values. He's clearly identified the vote he needs to win in South Carolina and is matching his message pitch-perfect.

Romney is sticking with a message that worked in Michigan - jobs. While South Carolina isn't suffering the economic plight that the Great Lakes is, it's still a solid message. Simply turn on the nightly news and you'll see financial woes has replaced news from Iraq.

McCain's to-camera pitch is the same military message he's always made. It may work. There are plenty of current and retired service veterans in South Carolina. He's not likely to grow his base - or breaking through his "ceiling" - with this message.

If you were in South Carolina, which message would appeal the most?

Permalink | Email this | Linking Blogs | Comments

When Fred Attacks

Filed under: President 2008, Hillary Clinton, Fred Thompson, Debates
Fred lays it all out:.

I do think it's a fair statement, but it makes me wonder where Fred has been all this time. Is he finally getting serious about campaigning? Or, as Hot Air wonders, is he merely trying to help out John McCain.

I was not able to catch the debate but did catch the after action standard Frank Luntz focus group on Fox. They all loved Fred's performance on the debate. Maybe he's not quite dead after all. I'd be very happy to hear it, but at this point it would be one of the biggest turnarounds in presidential politics. Fred scored only 1% in New Hampshire and has pulled all efforts from Michigan. He is now focusing everything in South Carolina. But the leader in South Carolina is John McCain. So Fred attacks Huckabee. Makes perfect sense.

Permalink | Email this | Linking Blogs | Comments
