He had skipped the two previous white-tie banquets and amateur theatricals where some of Washington's top journalists spoof the political/media establishment in song, dance and ridiculous costumes. But on Saturday night, Obama duly snarked for his supper by mocking himself, potential rivals and the tradition-bound club that even in this age of Twitter and You Tube, steadfastly bars TV coverage.

As commander-in-chief, he signaled Marine Gunnery Sgt. Kevin Bennear, one of the club's musically gifted ringer members, to "play that song we talked about," meaning the loud and proud "Born in the U-S-A, Born in the U-S-A" refrain made famous by Bruce Springsteen.

"Some things just bear repeating," Obama said of the lyrics, as if there might be any birthers questioning his citizenship among more than 630 politicians, government and media heavyweights who packed the Renaissance Hotel ballroom for the priciest and most exclusive of Washington's press celebrations of itself. ($300 per ticket, and a fraction of the more than 2,000 expected at next month's White House Correspondents' Association Dinner).

Then, taking aim at his hosts, whose predecessors entertained their first White House guests 126 years ago, Obama ticked off the heady events of 2011 that topped old regimes elsewhere in the world and said, "Look out, Gridiron Club."
He had other targets, of course, some of them in the audience and most already ridiculed onstage in elaborately costumed Republican and Democratic skits.

Commenting on the "unusual skin tone" (translate orange) of the absent Speaker John Boehner, Obama said he used to think it was a tan until he saw how often his nemesis got weepy: "I realize that's not a tan, it's rust."

Noting a new civility (really?) that has "people with strong disagreements getting along as never before," Obama cited Mitt Romney, the "former Massachusetts governor and presidential candidate working together by sharing a host body. It's inspiring...and creepy."

Obama thanked the rotund Republican Gov. Haley Barbour of Mississippi -- not known for his athleticism -- for backing first lady Michelle Obama's "Let's Move" anti-obesity initiative. "Haley, when Michelle said you should run, she didn't mean for president," the president said.

As for the also-absent Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton, Obama said her passion for recent Middle East regime change made it "hard to sleep with Hillary out on Pennsylvania Avenue shouting and throwing rocks."

The president had barbs for the dinner's two other speakers, Republican Gov. Mitch Daniels of Indiana, a possible 2012 White House contender, and Democratic Health and Human Services Secretary Kathleen Sebelius, a former Kansas governor who has struggled to push Obama's embattled health care plan.

"Mitch tore into his filet like it was a public employee," Obama said of Daniels, who reversed the requirement that state workers be union members. He cited Daniels's prior experience as a pharmaceutical executive and President George W. Bush's budget chief. "I don't have a joke here," Obama said. "I just wanted to put that out."

Having asked his own cabinet members to "cut things they care about, in Kathleen's case it was her once-promising political career."

Earlier Daniels, his right arm in a sling following rotator cuff surgery, went after Obama by recalling the Democratic candidate's private remarks to big party donors about conservatives clinging hard to their guns and their religion. "Mr. President, until I get this thing off, I can cling to my gun or my Bible, but not both," Daniels said.

At 5 feet 7 inches and balding, Daniels, who said he's still mulling whether to run, ticked off
a string adjectives used to describe him in recent news stories. "Small, stiff, short, pale, unimposing, unassuming, uninspiring, understated, uncharismatic, accountant-like, non-telegenic, boring, balding, blunt, nerdy, wooden, wonky, puny, and pint-sized," he said. "Really, it all points to one inescapable conclusion: It's destiny!"

In her speech, Sebelius told Daniels they had much in common. "We're both Midwest governors, we've both been cabinet members and neither of us is going to be president in 2012," she said.

Saying one reason she took her current job was because "it came with great health insurance," Sebelius then announced a plan to put TSA airport screeners in the HHS building "making it a lot easier for the businessman on the go by allowing him to get a boarding pass and a colonoscopy at the same time."

Among all that levity a couple of backstories played out.

At a time of toxic partisanship in Washington, the 65-member Gridiron Club (disclosure alert: I was tapped to join in 1990) and its swank dinner offers the chance for political adversaries to share a night of conversation, merriment, political gossip and agenda promoting.

But it's also the kind of gathering that make cynical voters outside the Beltway think there's not a dime's worth of difference between the two political parties, and that the relationship between the pols and the press is entirely too cozy and elitist.

The Gridiron president, Susan Page of USA Today, took note of that when she said in her welcoming speech that all those swells dressing up in white tie and sipping fine wine and hanging out for an evening "is exactly what the tea party suspected."

Then there is the irony of the Gridiron's policy of barring TV cameras, photographers and non-member, non-guest journalists from covering the dinner.

This is the 25th consecutive year C-SPAN has been denied access, prompting Mark Knoller, longtime White House correspondent for CBS Radio and not a Gridiron member, to Tweet that although Gridiron members attending the event are allowed to cover it, "barring WH press pool coverage of a presidential event is indefensible."

But Page told Politics Daily that transparency is maintained by all those reporters at the dinner who file stories after it's over, and who attend the Friday dress rehearsal to see the costumes and hear the lyrics. She also told me there is no great move afoot among members to push for TV cameras inside the room.

In part, it's to preserve a little mystery and exclusivity. But let's not kid ourselves. There probably aren't too many Gridiron members -- or their bosses who pick up the considerable dinner tab - very eager to end up on C-SPAN or You Tube dressed as a Hell's Angel, a drag queen or a dancing oil rig.

As Obama left the ballroom Saturday night, he had one bit of cheery news for the crowd: "The bar will be open till midnight and last time I checked, so will the government." Actually, the after-party was still going strong early Sunday.

Permalink | Email this | Linking Blogs | Comments

The Gridiron Club's 2011 Political/Media Roast and Toast Lyrics

Of course there's always a chance an adroit cellphone or camera-toting guest will violate club rules, either at the dinner or at Sunday's matinee reprise show, thus busting an image-less tradition in place since 1885.

Say what you will about the irony or hypocrisy of a group of journalists barring media cameras from broadcasting the onstage antics (C-SPAN has been asking to do just that for a quarter century). Only the speeches by President Obama, Gov. Mitch Daniels of Indiana (cracking jokes for the Republicans) and Health and Human Services Secretary Kathleen Sibelius (doing stand-up for the Dems) will be on the written record, although many more details will likely leak out.

In a nod to the times, tweeting, Facebooking and other instant communication about all aspects of the dinner were embargoed until it ended.

So in the interest of semi-transparency, herewith the lyrics from every parody performed
this weekend by nearly 100 journalists and a handful of vocally-blessed ringers with truly great voices.
FINGER IN THE WIND (Candle in the Wind, Elton John)

Cast portraying GOP Sens. John McCain and Lindsey Graham

MCCAIN:

Gays in the military
Used to never bother me at all
I was happy once letting
The Joint Chiefs make that call
And on immigration,
You know my old stance was withdrawn
And my message, it became:
"Hey Juan, get off my lawn." [shout this line]

And it may seem to you I lived last year
With my finger in the wind
Never knowing what to cling to
'Cause I had to win
And when it comes to all your judgments
Frankly, I don't give a damn.
I still have my Senate seat
And my best friend, Lindsey Graham

CHORUS
He still has his Senate seat
And his best friend, Lindsey Graham
Is he doing anything for you?

BETTY
MITCHETTE 1

I met him at the O-M-B
He read tax code and rules to me
You get the picture?

BETTY:
To side-step the press
To run if I want to
Not under duress
To fight for the right
And to lay waste the left
To be willing to refudiate
Without knowledge or heft
To my Tea Party base
That my books and my speeches will sell
Is Mitch Daniels too short and balding to be president? Are Haley Barbour, Chris Christie and Newt Gingrich too fat? Mitt Romney too handsome? Sarah Palin and Michele Bachmann too thin and beautiful?

Granted, it's a little early to know who's actually running and whether Republicans will nominate someone with a pretty face, low body-mass-index, great hair and above-average stature, or instead go for ideology sans cosmetology, and let policy trump physique.

But with the first GOP debate of the 2012 campaign set for May 2, and with height, weight and attractiveness already being discussed by some potential contenders and pundits, these are questions worth examining.

"In the TV age, in the social media age, the presence of a candidate in photos and videos counts a lot," Josh King, President Bill Clinton's expert on visuals, told Politics Daily. "Substance always matters but it needs to be put in the package. It's not whether a person is tall or diminutive, but instead has a charisma and substance as delivered on the stump that connects with the voters. If you think back to '92, the fitter and trimmer guy has been elected, and if you need a tie-breaker, it's also the younger guy."

Republican political consultant Mark McKinnon told me: "What you want today is something, anything, that makes you stand out. Voters want authenticity. And they increasingly prefer candidates who, like themselves, have flaws. People are suspicious of perfection or model looks. This is good news for the Chris Christies, bad news for the Mitt Romneys."

As for Palin and Bachmann, "women may have some latent jealousy, scratch their heads and wonder, 'They have birthed five kids are still size-2, lustrous brunettes?' " said Republican pollster Kellyanne Conway. But rather than own the envy, these voters may mask their resentment as ideological disdain. "I'm old enough to remember the 'don't hate me because I'm beautiful' " ads for Pantene hair products from the '80s, she added.

For the record, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention pegged the average weight of American males over age 20 at nearly 198 pounds and height at about 5 feet 9½ inches. Women averaged close to 165 pounds and stood just under 5 feet 4 inches.

Since 1900, the tallest presidential candidates have enjoyed a definite advantage, winning 19 of 28 elections. Those stats reversed an earlier trend: Between 1789 to 1924, the shorter guys declared victory in 15 of 26 races.

Weight is another factor, and it could carry a good news-bad news double standard: Voters seem to be more accepting of fat men than fat women seeking office, according to University of Missouri researchers.

But even political experts seem divided on the presumed advantages of a lanky frame, a nice face and the visible fruits of girth control.

Perhaps aware of the pitfalls of perfection, Romney, a former Massachusetts governor now mulling a second White House run, makes fun of his tall, handsome self by saying, "I'm the guy in the photo that comes with your picture frame."

Christie, who appears to be the largest presence in the GOP field -- despite recent assertions that he's not ready for a 2012 race -- won some MSNBC pundit praise Thursday night. Host Chris Matthews cited the New Jersey governor's "commanding presence," and Newsweek's Jonathan Alter noted "there are a lot of overweight people out there; they don't consider it to be a negative."

[Now, it turns out Christie now works out with a trainer three times a week and watches his diet, reports the Associated Press."Slowly but surely I'm taking the weight off" for the sake of his four children, age 7 to 17. "I need to be around for them."]

Don Imus joked before the 2009 election that Christie should set a better example for his obese constituents, the Republican candidate shot back: "I am setting an example, Don. We have to spur our economy. Dunkin' Donuts, International House of Pancakes -- those people need to work, too."

Other pols have also weighed in on the subject.

Last year, when the portly Barbour was asked about a possible challenge to the tall, thin Barack Obama, the Mississippi governor quipped, "If you see me losing 40 pounds, that means I'm either running or have cancer."

Since then, he has "lost some weight. He hasn't lost 40 pounds. He might be halfway there. So read into that what you will," a Barbour adviser recently told Politics Daily's Jill Lawrence.

Self-described "recovering foodaholic" Mike Huckabee, who once topped 300 pounds but shed 110 of them after a 2003 diabetes diagnosis, has since bulked up a bit. The former Arkansas governor-turned-Fox-News-commentator and radio talker, during a 2009 trip to Oklahoma, lamented his "constant struggle to find decent things to eat on the road and not get terribly messed up with the same old habits." He later blamed a foot injury for cutting into his jogging routine.

But having lost so much weight may give Huckabee -- who hasn't yet said if he'll run again for president -- an edge over his chunkier rivals.

"It's a little bit hard to talk about fiscal discipline when you appear not to have a lot of self-discipline," Norman Ornstein, resident scholar at the American Enterprise Institute, told me. "Most of our presidents in modern times have been taller than usual or fitter than usual: Lyndon Johnson, both Bushes, Reagan, Clinton, Obama were all over six feet. On the other hand, Americans want to identify with a president, and it seems so many of us are short and fat that it might be helpful."

Former Speaker Newt Gingrich, no one's idea of a buff jock, took a swipe at the current White House occupant, who is heavily into sports. "What we need is a president, not an athlete," Gingrich said after a speech to the Southern Leadership Conference in New Orleans. "Shooting three-point shots may be clever, but it doesn't put anybody to work."

Not surprisingly, the focus on size is offensive to many, including the National Assocciation to Advance Fat Acceptance. "Basically what happens when you only look at a person's weight, you are asking the public to make a decision on cosmetics rather than competence," Frances White, co-chair of the all-volunteer group, said in an e-mail. "The person's total qualifications should be examined, not just their appearance."

True enough, but "potential candidates would be remiss to ignore such stereotypes in contemplating a run for political office," says Elizabeth Miller, a political science professor who co-wrote the University of Missouri study that found a double standard for overweight women and men.

When shown doctored photos of ficticious fat candidates, participants assigned higher negatives to fat women in such key areas as reliability, dependability, honesty and competence. Once women no longer fit "the thin ideal," they lose credibility, Miller said in an e-mail. "For men, however, the ideal is to have more muscle mass and be larger. In fact, obese male candidates were often evaluated more positively than their non-obese counterparts."

Where does all this leave Gov. Mitch Daniels of Indiana, whose small stature (official height: 5 feet 7 inches) makes him not only the shortest potential male contender but also the lightest?

"Daniels is perfect," McKinnon told me. "He's the antithesis of Obama. Short, balding and wooden. His slogan can be 'Less Is More With Mitch.' "

The former White House budget director can also take heart from James Madison, America's fourth president and the shortest chief executive in history. In 1808, Madison, all 5 feet 4 inches of him, defeated Federalist candidate Charles Cotesworth Pinckney. (History doesn't tell us Pinckney's height, though he comes across as an average figure in at least one portrait.) Four years later, the diminutive incumbent claimed victory over DeWitt Clinton, a towering 6 feet 2½ inches.

To piano-playing political satirist Mark Russell, all this focus on candidate appearance "reeks of looksism." But it didn't take him long to describe "the perfect candidate: Long on height, short on looks, fat between the ears, a pompous sexy good old boy who wears a white sheet on the weekends and can see Russia from his plantation."

Permalink | Email this | Linking Blogs | Comments

Ex-Rep.
Mrs. Lee, 44, rushed from Buffalo to the ultra-posh and private Ocean Reef Club in Key Largo, Florida, "hoping to work things out" with ex-Rep. Chris Lee, 46, the New York Post reports. The second-term New York Republican abruptly quit the House on Wednesday just hours after Gawker.com broke the story that he had lied about being a divorced lobbyist in a personals ad. He also sent a shirtless muscle photo of himself to the woman who placed the ad.

The "humiliated" wife and her hard-partying, millionaire second husband, 46, are said to be holed up at the same exclusive club where the fallen lawmaker's father, Patrick Lee, owns a $4 million home.
"'She's crushed -- this was supposed to be her prince charming,'" the Post quotes a friend of Michele. She fretted over his "extended solo stays in Washington," and urged him to spend more time in Buffalo, said another pal. Her first marriage to a high-school sweetheart ended after he cheated on her, according to the Post. The Lees have a young son.

"She picked a bad boy twice, which is a shame, because she's a smart woman without a mean bone in her body," a friend told the Post. "She's absolutely humiliated. She was so proud of him and what he'd accomplished."

Patrick Lee was said to be livid, having warned his son about his after-hours partying well before the Craigslist story broke. The elder Lee was "particularly enraged" over the "sloppiness of the situation" and the beefcake photo, reports the Post, which referred to Michele as "a woman porned." Patrick Lee pushed for immediate resignation "to curtail any extended embarrassment for the family," the source said. "He said, 'End it quick.'"

Meanwhile Callahan, 34 -- who anonymously outed Lee on Gawker and TheLoop21.com then went public in The Washington Post, now offers a cheeky, somewhat profane essay titled "Owning My ----" about the flap, complete with a winsome head shot, on her flyblackchick.com website.

"Sure, I'm the bad woman," she purrs, noting that some have accused her of "enticing" Lee to send her the infamous shirtless photo.

"Excuse me for not realizing 'Do you have something that doesn't look like a JCPenney Ad' is considered enticing nowadays. Maybe I'll use it more often. Maybe it'll keep me off of Craigslist. Maybe it'll yield me a financially & emotionally stable man. I mean anything is possible right?"

She chided "all of you holier than thous out there" for suggesting that anyone seeking dates on Craigslist should expect raunchy responses.

"The same people you're meeting from Match, E-Harmony, OkCupid and whatever other high priced service you want to use, guess what...they're all on Craigslist too!" she wrote. "And if you're looking for a job, may I suggest the job ads as well...There you go, my unpaid advertisement for Craigslist."

"Also, to set the record straight, Gawker didn't pay me & I didn't ask to be paid," writes the University of Maryland faculty specialist and mother of a young son.

In a pre-emptive strike against anyone digging into her past, she offers this intel:

"If it makes you happy to go back YEARS in my history and find a state tax lien that has been satisfied, some parking violations, a few days in jail *GASP* over stupid ---- and the recent Federal lawsuit regarding the previous name of my site, then knock yourselves out. Call every local newspaper or news channel. Shout it from the rooftops if it makes you feel better. Just don't slip and fall, I don't need another lawsuit because you broke your ------- neck while doing it. Tonight I will sleep fine. Tomorrow I will sleep fine. Hopefully those people who live lily white lives with no blemishes will sleep fine as well."

Happy Valentine's Day, ladies.

As for the buff ex-Congressman who described himself to Callahan in one e-mail as a "fit, fun and classy guy," well, Happy VD to you, too.

Permalink | Email this | Linking Blogs | Comments

New York Rep. What started last month with an anonymous woman's Craigslist dating search for men who don't "look like toads" ended Wednesday with the resignation of two-term Rep. Christopher Lee, R-N.Y., a married father who passed himself off as a divorced lobbyist when he sent her a topless muscle photo of himself.

Gawker.com broke the story about the lying lawmaker under the headline "Married GOP Congressman Sent Sexy Pictures to Craigslist Babe."

Within hours, he had quit his $174,000-a-year job and issued this statement:

"I regret the harm that my actions have caused my family, my staff and my constituents. I deeply and sincerely apologize to them all. I have made profound mistakes and I promise to work as hard as I can to seek their forgiveness. The challenges we face in Western New York and across the country are too serious for me to allow this distraction to continue, and so I am announcing that I have resigned my seat in Congress effective immediately."

Answering a Washington-area "Women for Men" ad last month, Lee described himself as 39, divorced, a lobbyist and a "fit, fun classy guy." And to prove it, he e-mailed the shirtless photo to the unnamed government worker from Maryland.

Once she figured out the man she thought might have been a JC Penney model was actually a 46-year-old congressman, she went to Gawker with copies of their bantering e-mails about bad Craigslist dates.

Lee wouldn't discuss the incident Wednesday afternoon when intercepted by Fox News enroute to his car, saying, "I have to work this out with my wife."

He resigned later in the afternoon. Gov. Andrew Cuomo is expected to set a date for a special election to fill Lee's seat.

For a while it seemed he might try to tough it out. A Lee spokesman earlier told Gawker that Lee believed his e-mail account had been hacked around Jan. 21, although the date on the e-mails containing the topless Blackberry portrait was dated Jan. 14.

In the warp-speed world of online news, the Gawker story was added to Lee's Wikipedia profile by mid-afternoon, though it should be noted that in the case of the fit, fun philanderer, he was answering, not placing, an ad.

"In February of 2011 Representative Chris Lee was found to have been posting personal ads on Craigslist looking for women and lying about his age and marriage after e-mails and risque photos he sent to a woman were uncovered."

http://gawker.com/#!5756377/craigslist-congressman-resigns

Permalink | Email this | Linking Blogs | Comments

Chelsea Clinton in New York, Marc Mezvinsky in Wyoming, Still a 'Very Happy' Couple, Friend Says

Filed under: Hillary Clinton, Bill Clinton, Republic of Dish, Chelsea Clinton

Is the state of the union of former First Daughter Chelsea Clinton and Marc Mezvinsky, her husband of barely seven months, solid?

"The couple are very happy," a family friend told Politics Daily, in response to questions raised in media reports about why the two are currently living nearly 1,900 miles apart.

Clinton, 30, is in Manhattan pursuing her doctorate in public policy at New York University, while Mezvinsky, 34, who recently quit his financial sector job at G3 Capital, is spending a few months skiing and snowboarding in Jackson Hole, Wyo.

The National Enquirer cited a "close" source saying Chelsea asked her parents, former President Bill Clinton and Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton -- "if they could help her get an annulment" after a serious argument with Mezvinsky over when she would get pregnant.

"These reports are completely false," the family friend told me.

It's not as if the two hadn't already spent years together before doing the two-state tango. They met in the 1990s, started dating in 2005, got engaged at Thanksgiving 2009 and tied the knot last summer in a lavish wedding in Rhinebeck, N.Y.
Bill Clinton has made it clear he'd like to be a grandfather. Then, speaking for his wife, he noted, "I'll tell you this: Hillary wants to be a grandmother much more than she ever wanted to be a president." Descibing Chelsea's marriage to Mezvinsky, he said, "I've known this guy for half his life...and they've been friends a long time. I admire him, I love him and I think it was time for her to do it. I trust my daughter. She has always had good judgment about life."

Hillary Clinton also weighed in with this statement: "Let me just say, I love babies, so you know, maybe I'll have more in my life some day," describing herself as "absolutely" ready for grandmotherhood. Both Clintons "spend as much time with our daughter and [her] husband as they will let us. So we, luckily, live in New York near where they live, because that gives us an easier chance to get together for dinner or go to the theater or just hang out. And we're always looking for excuses to do that."

Perhaps they'll also hit Jackson Hole some time soon.

Permalink | Email this | Linking Blogs | Comments

State of the Union Bipartisan 'Date Night' Update

Filed under: Senate, House, Democrats, Republicans, State of the Union, Polls, Republic of Dish

With President Obama's State of the Union address just hours away, the bipartisan seat-mate scramble continues apace.

House Republican Whip Eric Cantor says he's asked Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi to sit with him, but his frequent adversary Tweeted her regrets. "I thank @GOPLeader for his #SOTU offer, but I invited my friend Rep. [Roscoe] Bartlett from MD yesterday & am pleased he accepted."

And four proponents of mixed seating held a Capitol Hill news conference Tuesday morning to explain why they're in favor of crossing the aisle.

Sen. Mark Udall (D-Colo.), who proposed the idea two weeks ago to minimize political rancor, said if members couldn't even join forces for one night, how could they possibly face such challenges as the economy and energy policy.

He said he would walk in with Sen. Lisa Murkowski (R-Alaska) and then they'd split up. Udall would head for the GOP side of the House chamber and Murkowski would join the Democrats. With numerous lawmakers mixing it up, he said, "that leads to a sense we are in this together."

Murkowski conceded that bipartisan seating is "symbolic," but added, "Why not start off this new 112th Congress with a gesture, an effort to try to come together if even for just a couple of hours?" It's time to show the world "there are no cooties to be had" by sitting with political rivals. She also suggested the media focus less "on some of the partisan drama" and more on Democrats and Republicans who work together. In what might be interpreted as both a show of Polish American pride and a copy editor's nightmare, Murkowski will pair off with Sen. Barbara Mikulski (D-Md.).

Rep. Heath Shuler (D-N.C.) noted that the "the world is watching tonight" and that "far too often you will see members trying to get their Oscar awards on C-SPAN" using overblown rhetoric and harsh language.

Freshman Rep. Paul Gosar (R-Ariz.), who plans to sit with Rep. Elijah Cummings (D-Md.), called for fewer reflexive floor demonstrations during Obama's speech, and urged members to "really mean it when we do stand."

As for intemperate language, especially in the wake of the Jan. 8 Tucson shooting rampage that left six dead and more than a dozen injured, including Rep. Gabrielle Giffords (D-Ariz.), Udall said, simply, "Sticks and stones can break bones, but words can do real damage."

Maybe so, but the whole notion of bipartisan seating has become ripe for satire, much of it featuring dance metaphors that range from "prom date" to "freshman mixer."

Since Udall began his push for crossing what he called the congressional "Continental Divide," members' wives, Capitol Hill staffers and, of course, journalists (I plead guilty) have been offering suggestions for odd-couple pairings and groupings, while lawmakers themselves have taken to announcing their choices on Twitter, talk shows, at news conferences and in hometown interviews.

Debbie Dingell, whose husband, Rep. John Dingell (D-Mich), is the longest-serving (55 years) politician on Capitol Hill, told him he should sit with Rep. Aaron Schock, R-Ill, who at 29 is the youngest member of the House. Instead, the former chairman of the Energy and Commerce Committee chose the current GOP chair and fellow Michigander, Rep. Fred Upton.
A number of freshmen, including Sens. Chris Coons (D-Del.) and John Boozman (R-Ark.), also will form bipartisan pairs.

CNN's ever-festive Jeanne Moos called the spectacle "State of the Date," and bestowed the title "prom king and queen" on tall, handsome Sen. John Thune (R-S.D.) and the blond and lovely Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand, (D-N.Y.), the subject of a recent Vogue magazine profile.

Rep. Joe Wilson (R-S.C.), who infamously shouted "You lie!" at Obama during the president's 2009 health care speech to Congress, Tweeted about his SOTU menage-a-trois with two Democratic colleagues on the House Armed Services Committee: Rep. Susan Davis of California and Del. Madeleine Bordallo of Guam. He'll gallantly cross over to their side of the aisle.

Despite a pair of polls last week showing that a majority of Americans favor bipartisan seating for the 9 p.m. presidential address, Rep. Shelley Moore Capito (R-W.Va.), a co-founder of the House civility caucus -- yes, there is such a thing -- told the Associated Press that "really, for the average citizen, they don't give a rip where we sit."

Perhaps not, but Debbie Dingell, the House spouse who years ago organized annual bipartisan family picnics and retreats, thinks red state/blue state socializing is good for lawmakers and thus good for the nation. "It's very hard to demonize people you know," she told me. "The next step for members who are sitting together for the State of the Union is to go out for dinner."

Udall said there is talk in the Senate of holding monthly bipartisan lunches.

Still, Murkowski had one last suggestion for covering the State of the Union: Do not pay excessive attention to "who's sitting with who. It reminds me a little bit of junior high. . . . The focus should be on the president, not where everybody ends up sitting."

Permalink | Email this | Linking Blogs | Comments

State of the Union Bipartisan Seating: Comity Central for Lawmakers

Filed under: Democrats, Republicans, State of the Union, Republic of Dish

Get ready for Comity Central, or something approaching a massive Congressional date night as pairs and groups of Republicans and Democrats cozy up in adjoining seats for President Barack Obama's State of the Union speech.

No sooner did Third Way, a centrist think tank, float the notion of muting partisan cheering and jeering through open seating after the Tucson shooting rampage that severely wounded Rep. Gabrielle Giffords (D-Ariz.) than Sen. Mark Udall (D-Colo.) jumped all over it.

"There is no rule or reason that on this night we should emphasize divided government, separated by party, instead of being seen united as a country," he wrote to colleagues.

Dozens of lawmakers eager to appear bipartisan, if only for a few hours, answered the call. They range from New York Reps. Anthony Weiner, a Democrat, and Peter King, a Republican, whose wife called the duo the "biggest loudmouths" in the House, to the bipartisan Congressional Women's Softball Team.

Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand (D-N.Y.) will attend with Sen. John Thune (R-S.D), while Sens. Chuck Schumer (D-N.Y.) and Tom Coburn (R-Okla.) will become an item for the night.

"I think if Coburn and Schumer can sit next to each other, then probably just about everybody can," Schumer said on CBS' "Face the Nation."

Intra-state Senate duos include Florida's Bill Nelson, a two-term Democrat, and Marco Rubio, a GOP freshman and tea party darling. "I know it's important to me and to Marco that the two of us have the basis of a personal friendship, and that's always been the tradition of the two senators from Florida," Nelson told Politics Daily.

Pennsylvania Sen. Bob Casey, a Democrat will sit with freshman Republican Sen. Pat Toomey.
Ditto for the Illinois twosome, Democrat Dick Durbin and GOP newcomer Mark Kirk.

Moreover, Rep. Joe Wilson (R-S.C.) promises to behave Tuesday night; last year he yelled "You lie!" at Obama in midspeech. No indicator yet who'll be next to him.

Certainly sitting with opponents is an easy, no-risk way for lawmakers to score civility points, said a spokesman for one House Democrat, who sought anonymity in return for cynical candor.

"It's not like a freshman mixer," the aide said. "It's probably more a way of getting some good press back home, but I think it will also be interesting to see the dynamic of how the speech is received. Members will be on better behavior. You won't have all that standing up and cheering by some while others stay in their seats. . . . I don't think a lot of new friendships will be forged. They will be sitting with people they already know."

Naturally the idea is ripe for satire. I had visions of mutant congressional e-dating: "Cap-and-trade Democrat seeks pro-life Republican for one-nighter," or "Tea Party budget hawk in search of immigration dove for possible friendship." The possibilities are limitless.

"Nancy Pelosi, the House Democratic leader, could sit with new Rep. Allen West (R-Fla.), who tried to hire as his chief of staff a woman who called Pelosi 'garbage,'" suggested Dana Milbank of The Washington Post. "Attorney General Eric Holder would naturally be joined by Rep. Darrell Issa (who has called President Obama's 'one of the most corrupt administrations' in history.) Supreme Court Justices Sonia Sotomayor and Elena Kagan would sandwich Sen. Jeff Sessions, who led the opposition to their confirmations."

Humor aside, the new civility is apparently fine with voters. A recent CNN/ORC poll showed 72 percent of the public favor bipartisan seating, with only 22 percent preferring traditional separation by party. Though all demographic groups like cross-pollination, Democrats and independents are much more likely to favor it than Republicans, says CNN Polling Director Keating Holland. A Fox News survey has slightly lower numbers, with 56 percent of respondents saying it's a good idea and 39 percent finding it "silly."

If history is an indicator, Rep. Chris Murphy (D-Conn.) will find himself a Republican buddy. As chair of the Center Aisle Caucus, he encourages bipartisan relations "to try to create and repair some friendships, and I think that does make a difference. I think if you know more people on the other side of the aisle you're much less likely to yell at them in the context of a political debate."

There are conflicting reports on the seating plans of the Colorado delegation. The Denver Post has all seven House members -- four Republicans and three Democrats -- attending as a bloc. "Last year I went over and sat on the Republican side," Rep. Jared Polis told the Post. This year he'll be among homeys of both parties. The New York Times puts Democratic Sens. Michael Bennett and Udall with the state's GOP members.

Whatever the arrangements, logistics may be tricky for groups, given that some lawmakers stake out a seat on the center aisle hours before the 9 p.m. speech, the better to be seen on TV and to shake hands with the president, Cabinet members and Supreme Court justices.

But not everyone thinks the new civility is such a great idea.

Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell did not seem wowed when asked about it on "Fox News Sunday," saying he was going to sit where he usually does, at the Republican leadership table.

"More important than the appearance of sitting together is what we do together," he said. "And the American people are more interested in actual accomplishments on a bipartisan basis here in the next six to nine months than they are with the seating arrangement at the State of the Union."

Rep. Paul Broun (R-Ga.) told radio host Scott Hennen that Democrats "don't want civility. They want silence from the Republicans. And the sitting together being kissy-kissy is just another way to try to silence Republicans, and also to show -- to keep the American people from seeing how few of them there are in the U.S. House now. Then when people stand up . . . what the Democrats are going to be doing when Barack Obama spews out all his venom, then, um, if they're scattered throughout all the Republicans, then it won't be as noticeable as if we're sitting apart."

New York Magazine's on-line "Daily Intel" column also thought it eliminated an important element for those watching the annual event.

"A neat separation of the parties allows the American people to see, in real time, their positions on the president's agenda and the issues of the day," the Daily Intel column said. "It's actually very informative and helpful to be able to easily assess which proposals the Republicans and Democrats support, respectively, through the decision to applaud. It also allows us to identify the few party-bucking independent thinkers who, every so often, stand up to clap while the rest of their colleagues remain seated."

Such visuals won't work in "one big bipartisan hodgepodge" because that "brief chamber reaction shot on TV becomes nearly impossible to decipher."

That said, this state of the union speech could provide the most interesting viewing since Nancy Reagan started the tradition of putting everyday heroes in the First Lady's gallery.

Permalink | Email this | Linking Blogs | Comments

Obamas Host China's President Hu at Glitzy White House State Dinner

Filed under: Bill Clinton, Obama Administration, Deep Background, Michelle Obama, Republic of Dish, White House, Barack Obama, China
President and Mrs. Obama welcomed China's President Hu Jintao to a glittery state dinner for 225 Wednesday night, with guests ranging from Wall Street titans to a human rights champion, to a pair of former presidents -- Jimmy Carter and Bill Clinton -- and a clutch of entertainers and business leaders.

The event also featured an all-American dinner capped by apple pie and ice cream and the news flash from Obama that China will let Washington's National Zoo keep Mei Xiang and Tian Tian, its adorable loaner pandas, for another five years. After the toasts came a jazz concert.

Most guests arrived via a ground floor entrance and walked across the marble floor past a media scrum -- there was no red carpet, this being the White House, not the Golden Globes -- and it's not clear whether any of them noticed the dozens of protestors across Pennsylvania Avenue. The protestors spent much of the day demonstrating against China's crackdown on the religious group Falun Gong and against China's tough policies in Tibet.

Kenneth Roth, who heads Human Rights Watch, stopped to talk to reporters on his way to cocktails and addressed that very issue when he said, "I take it that was the reason I was invited, as a statement to President Hu. . . . These days the Chinese accept human rights as a topic of conversation. That is a step forward from the past."

This state dinner was the smallest of the three the Obamas have hosted -- there were more than 300 guests at the 2009 dinner for the Indian prime minister and some 260 honoring the Mexican president. This is also the first one held exclusively inside the White House, rather than under an enormous tent outdoors.

Guests were seated in three adjoining rooms, and although a state dinner invitation is, by definition, a hot ticket, best bragging rights arguably went to those in the State Dining Room. The Obamas and Hu -- who eschewed a tux for a dark business suit and necktie -- sat at a long rectangular head table for 20. Ten smaller round tables were arranged throughout the room. The rest of the guests were in the Red and Blue Rooms, which where equipped with large TV monitors so everyone could see and hear the toasts that came at the end of a long day of events dealing with trade and security.
The tables were covered in richly colored cloths -- teal, garnet or sable -- featuring a pheasant print that may have been meant to kill two birds with one stone: The pheasant is native to China, and was a favorite avian subject of American naturalist John James Audubon. Floral centerpieces of roses, hydrangeas, orchids and foliage toned down the gold service plates and flatware, some of it dating to the 1890s. The china came from the Reagan and Clinton presidencies.

At the request of the Chinese delegation, the menu was quintessentially American (think surf and turf) and for the first time at an Obama state dinner, White House chef Cristeta Comerford did not have to share her kitchen with a "guest" chef. The meal started with a pear, fennel, walnut and goat cheese salad, followed by poached Maine lobster with orange glazed carrots and black trumpet mushrooms, then a spot of lemon sorbet (the all-important palate cleanser) and proceeded on to dry, aged rib eye with buttermilk crisp onions, creamed spinach and double-stuffed potatoes. Dessert was that old standby, apple pie and ice cream.
As they have at previous celebrations, the Obamas used a professional party firm in addition to the White House staff. Rafinelli Events of Boston, which did the honors, is perhaps best known for staging Chelsea Clinton's knockout wedding in July.

And now, let's get down to the really important stuff: Who wore what, and who had clever repartee en route to pre-dinner cocktails.

Michelle Obama did not choose a gown by either Jason Wu (she wore one of his creations to the inaugural balls) or Vera Wang, two Chinese-Americans she has favored in the past. Instead she chose a long, deep red and black number with asymetrical shoulders, a tight bodice and draped skirt by Alexander McQueen, the bad-boy British designer who committed suicide last year.

The best-dressed man at the dinner, hands down, was martial arts movie mogul Jackie Chan, in a buttonless, open black jacket and high-collared white shirt with no tie. He carried a large camera to take groupie pix, and said he'd spent the morning hoping to hear some news about the American and Chinese film industries.

Wang wore, well, duh, Wang, a taupe and cream chiffon column; around her neck was a chunky stone collar of bronze-y bling (diamonds? crystals?). Barbra Streisand, who joked she'd been invited because "I worked in a Chinese restaurant," also claimed design credit for her ensemble: a long, dark pinstripe skirt with a high slit, a low-cut vest with giant sparkly buttons, a matching jacket and perhaps 200 carats of clear bling (diamonds? crystals?) around her throat.

Vogue Editor Anna Wintour -- who put the First Lady on the fashion mag cover -- sported an elegant knee-length white Chanel suit accented with geometric glitz. Conspicuously absent were her trademark sunglasses. Was there anything she wanted to know about Hu? "Will he invest his money in Chinese fashion?" she asked. We presume she was not referring to China's notorious knock-off clothing and counterfeit accessories factories.

Actor B.D. Wong of "Law & Order" was so thrilled to be at the White House he took cell-phone pictures of the media on his way in with his mother. Imagine his delight to discover he would be seated at the head table.

Perhaps it was an accident of timing, or maybe a minor global financial conspiracy, but Lloyd Blankfein of Goldman Sachs and Jamie Dimon of JP Morgan Chase came in one after the other, with their wives on their arms. There were no shouted questions and no volunteered remarks.

Although the crowd was heavily Democratic there were some Republicans, including Sen. Richard Lugar of Indiana, New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie, and former Labor Secretary Elaine Chao, who brought her father rather than her husband, Sen. Mitch McConnell of Kentucky. He was one of several lawmakers who declined the Obamas' invitation. So, too, did House Speaker John Boehner, who meets Thursday on Capitol Hill with Hu.

Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid also declined, which is probably a good thing given that he called Hu a "dictator" on Tuesday during a radio show in Las Vegas, although House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi happily attended with husband Paul.

Then there was John Huntsman, the U.S. ambassador to China who is widely rumored to be interested in running for the Republican presidential nomination. Asked about future plans on the way in, he said simply, "We are loyal to our country and our president."

But the State Dinner was about the moment, not the future. And so when dinner ended, guests filed into the East Room to hear such jazz greats as Herbie Hancock and Dee Dee Bridgewater and Chinese pianist Lang Lang. On a school night, Obama daughters Sasha and Malia were allowed to stay up late and come downstairs to catch the concert, for which they had the president of China to thank.

Permalink | Email this | Linking Blogs | Comments

Speaker Boehner Declines Third Straight Obama State Dinner

Filed under: Obama Administration, Congress, Republic of Dish, White House

In May 2007, then-House Minority Leader John Boehner and his wife, Deborah, attended a glittery White House state dinner for Queen Elizabeth and Prince Philip hosted by President and Mrs. Bush. The dress for men was white tie and tailcoat, more formal than the customary tuxedo.

Cabinet members, business leaders, diplomats and politicians -- Senate Minority Whip Trent Lott, a Republican, and House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, a Democrat -- were also there, along with former First Lady Nancy Reagan, golfer Arnold Palmer and jockey Calvin Borel, who rode the 2007 Kentucky Derby winner.

Fast forward to November 2009, May 2010 and this week.

The same John Boehner who toasted the queen in 2007 has since refused all three state dinner invitations from Democratic President Barack Obama for key U.S. allies: Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, Mexican President Felipe Calderon and, on Wednesday night, President Hu Jintao of China.

"Speaker Boehner will have a substantive meeting with President Hu later this week," his spokesman, Michael Steel, told me by e-mail. (It's set for Thursday on Capitol Hill.)
But the speaker's press office did not address questions of why Boehner declined all three Obama state dinners, or whether he believes nothing meaningful can be achieved by spending social time with world leaders and their delegations.

He "doesn't necessarily believe in all the pomp and circumstance of Washington," former Republican National Commitee spokesman Doug Heye told Politico, which broke the 3-for-3 state dinner boycott story.

To be fair, Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid sent regrets to that 2007 dinner for the queen because "his office said he didn't have white tie," recalled Anita McBride, then-chief of staff to Laura Bush.

But in the world of protocol and etiquette, "You really have to be sick, dead or dying to regret a state dinner invitation," McBride noted.

"I hate to think it would be pettiness: 'I don't like the president so I am not coming,'" said a former social secretary in a Republican White House, who requested anonymity. "I think you can assume that the administration, when they have a state dinner, wants to show a bipartisan face" to foreign leaders. Some lawmakers "might be uncomfortable in black tie or white tie, they might be uncomfortable with the positions of the administration."

They may also object to the policies of the visiting head of state, or not want to be seen as part of the Washington establishment, said the former social secretary. "There is not Republican who couldn't benefit from sitting next to a Vernon Jordan," one of the city's Democratic power brokers and political wise men.

On the other hand, it is important for every White House to invite the opposition, she said. House Majority Leader Eric Cantor (R-Va.) was not among the chosen, his office confirmed.

Forgetting partisanship for an evening has its advantages for everyone, said McBride. "I don't want to second-guess the speaker but one of the things I have learned is that those parties historically are a very important part of a diplomatic effort. There is a lot of work that gets done in social situations, a lot of work on the part of government and business leaders . . . This is one thing where I say I'd take a page out of the Nancy Pelosi book. She never regretted an invitation with President Bush, with whom she had major policy differences."

Turning down such invitations, especially by someone who is third in line for the presidency, is a big mistake, says Letitia Baldridge, who was President Kennedy's social secretary. "I think it's short-sighted and a failing of his duty." Yes, there were Democrats and Republicans who brushed off Kennedy state dinners without explanation, but Baldridge, who says she's given protocol advice to five first ladies, called such behavior "so conceited of the person." Not attending a state dinner "is his loss because he is losing out on a very special moment in history."

Permalink | Email this | Linking Blogs | Comments

Michael Reagan Rips Half-Brother Ron Over Book and Alzheimer's Claim

Filed under: Republic of Dish, White House
Michael Reagan blasted as "falsehoods and lies and conspiracy theories to sell books," the suggestion by half-brother Ron Reagan that their father may have had Alzheimer's disease while still in the White House.

"In order for that that happen, you would have to have doctors, the Secret Service and other family members all part of the same conspiracy," he told Politics Daily. Reagan's diagnosis of Alzheimer's was not announced publicly until 1994, five years after he left office.

Michael ripped the excerpt from Ron's book, "My Father at 100," that appears in Sunday's Parade magazine. Ron Jr. cites a 1989 post-presidential visit to the Mayo Clinic in Minnesota after a riding accident. "Surgeons opening his skull to relieve pressure on the brain emerged from the operating room with the news that they had detected probable signs of Alzheimer's disease. Further tests conducted the following year confirmed those suspicions."

Ron dates his suspicions about the disease to the 1984 re-election campaign. "I felt the first shivers of concern that something beyond mellowing was affecting my father" during the first debate against Democratic nominee Walter Mondale. "My heart sank as he floundered his way through his responses. He looked tired and bewildered." Ron Jr. also notes that by 1986 his father couldn't remember the names of familiar canyons when flying over California, adding that doctors now know the disease can go unrecognized for some time. "The question, then, of whether my father suffered from the beginning stages of Alzheimer's while in office more or less answers itself," he writes.

"Nobody was happy with the debate," Michael told me by phone from Miami. But Ron's suggestion of early onset of the disease "is the last thing I would have expected from him, to take this kind of shot at his Dad with no evidence except he watched a debate between Dad and Mondale."

The semi-siblings who haven't spoken in years, are political and religious opposites. Michael Reagan, 65, is a conservative former radio talk show host who was adopted by Reagan and his first wife, actress Jane Wyman. He sired the Gipper's only two grandchildren with longtime wife, Colleen, and is a regular churchgoer.

Ron, 52, the natural son of Reagan and his second wife, actress and former first lady Nancy Davis Reagan, is a liberal former talk show host on the defunct left-ish Air America network. He is also a self-professed atheist.

Michael, who hopes to become a GOP political consultant, told me that as the author of a half dozen books, "I know publishers want to have that 'ah-ha' moment, something to put out to promote the book. But to go to this extent to just tell falsehoods and lies and conspiracy theories to get it out there, is outrageous. Really, to do this to his mother at 89 and as fragile as she can be, Ron and Patti (Davis) are the only two children she's got, and for him to do this just to sell a book, I mean it's just unconscionable. There are enough great stories he could share that would make news, great 'inside baseball' stories."

U.S. News & World Report reported Friday that although Ron, "who became a liberal and atheist, disappointing his dad" writes about presidential brain surgery in San Diego, "there is no reporting about any San Diego operation on Reagan. News reports at the time of his fall say Reagan was flown to a hospital in Arizona, where he was treated for scrapes and bruises and released after five hours." The U.S. News blog Washington Whispers, which first reported the Ron Reagan story, also notes that the president's four White House doctors said they saw no evidence Reagan had Alzheimer's while in office.

"Basically Ron has my dad looking like the Congresswoman in Arizona, with his head shaved and half his brain exposed," Michael Reagan told me. He was referring to Democratic Rep. Gabrielle Giffords, who was shot in the head during last Saturday's Tucson massacre. "I saw my father on and off and I never saw anything that looked like that. Certainly he would have shared that story."

Michael readily admits he is estranged from both Ron and half-sister Patti Davis, whose liberal views also caused her parents grief over the years. In 2005 she wrote "The Long Goodbye," a loving, first-person account of her father's decline into dementia that starts in 1995, six years after he left Washington.

Michael says he hasn't spoken to Ron since the reading their father's will after his death in 2004. While he refused to discuss inheritance details, he says, "it wasn't enough for Ron or for anybody to retire on...I hope Patti doesn't come out and try to support Ron. He needs to own this deal because it's a conspiracy theory that everybody has to be involved in, including my father's own children."

On Friday, the Ronald Reagan Foundation and Library in Simi Valley, Cal., issued a statement calling Ron's book "wonderfully warm and engaging." But, "as for the topic of Alzheimer's, this subject has been well documented over the years by both President Reagan's personal physicians, physicians who treated him after the diagnosis, as well as those who worked closely with him daily. All are consistent in their view that signs of Alzheimer's did not appear until well after President Reagan left the White House."

Ron Reagan's national publicity tour kicks into high gear next week, culminating with his father's 100th birthday Feb. 6. Michael is also taking advantage of his father's centennial with a book of his own, "The New Reagan Revolution."
Gabrielle Giffords (D-Ariz.) had been shot in the head at an outdoor constituent meeting in Tuscon, Ariz.

Seeking to distract herself as the horrific tale unfolded -- including early, erroneous reports that her colleague had died in the hail of bullets that claimed six lives and injured 14 -- Pelosi returned to dismantling the tree. Within minutes, she came across the ornament Gabby Giffords and her astronaut husband, Mark Kelly, had given her as a gift, a source told Politics Daily.

It was an ironic and bittersweet moment for Pelosi. Never mind that on Jan. 5, just three days before the shooting, Giffords had voted for Rep. John Lewis, the civil rights pioneer from Georgia, instead of Pelosi, for House speaker. A total of 19 dissident Democrats supported other members for the post. Because Republicans so greatly outnumber Democrats, GOP leader John Boehner of Ohio was elected speaker, and Pelosi, by default, became minority leader. At the time, Pelosi shrugged off the insurgency by moderates and conservatives as "politics," just as she seemingly forgave Democrats who distanced themselves from her during their House campaigns by saying, "I just want them to win their elections. I don't care."

It is unclear what she thought of those who opposed her last week, and certainly in the case of Giffords, who faces a difficult recovery, Pelosi's real feelings will probably never be known.

But on Wednesday night, a short week after that vote -- which nevertheless overwhelmingly made her minority leader -- a clearly exultant Pelosi declared, "It was like a miracle," when Giffords opened her eyes at University Medical Center in Tucson, where she remains in critical condition.

Pelosi was with two of Giffords' best friends -- Rep. Debbie Wasserman Schultz of Florida and Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand of New York -- in the hospital room where President Obama and his wife, Michelle, had also spent time before leaving for the emotional memorial service at the University of Arizona. After Pelosi left the hospital room, she partially attributed Giffords' latest sign of progress to "girl power."

The minority leader, who is 70, may not be as close to Giffords, 40, as her other two colleagues in the room, but she clearly has been a mentor to all the younger Democratic women elected in recent years. As House speaker until last week, it was Pelosi who named freshman Giffords to the Armed Services Committee in 2007 and gave her a coveted spot on the bipartisan delegation to the Copenhagen climate control conference in 2009.

On Tuesday afternoon, just three days after the shooting, Pelosi spent nearly 20 minutes consoling the Giffords' staff. She met with aides individually and then as a group, the source said. Like other Democratic and Republican leaders have done since the shooting, Pelosi also arranged to have food delivered to the traumatized aides on Tuesday. "She is close to all of her members. It's part of her leadership style. She knows the children, the parents, the spouses. She sends notes," the source continued.

As Pelosi left Giffords' office in the Longworth building on Tuesday, she made no public statement. She just dabbed at her eyes and walked down the marble corridor. A day later, Giffords opened her eyes.

Permalink | Email this | Linking Blogs | Comments

John Edwards Denies Enquirer Story That He'll Marry Rielle Hunter

Filed under: Scandal, Republic of Dish
Will former Democratic presidential candidate John Edwards actually marry Rielle Hunter, his mistress and baby mama, with whom he carried on a long affair even as his estranged wife battled the breast cancer that finally killed her last month?

The National Enquirer -- which has been correct on several, but not all, key elements of this sordid story -- is reporting the former North Carolina senator's "secret proposal" in its latest issue. However, the Daily Beast reported Friday that an Edwards spokeswoman has denied the Enquirer report. "I can tell you that it's not true," she said.

The tabloid, quoting an "insider," says Edwards popped the question after Christmas, "although they haven't set a wedding date yet." The two first hooked up in 2006.

"In an outrageous disregard for his wife Elizabeth's deathbed wish, John has proposed to his mistress just three weeks after burying his heartbroken spouse," the Enquirer trumpeted.
Though she hoped for reconciliation, she walked out on him for good when he finally admitted -- after repeated denials -- the ongoing affair with Hunter, a campaign videographer, and the birth of Frances Quinn Hunter, now 2. Elizabeth said last year she did not want to be remembered as a "cuckolded wife."

In its Jan. 17 issue, which is already on newsstands in some markets, the Enquirer further reports that during a holiday getaway, John Edwards introduced his three children by Elizabeth to Rielle and Frances at a Macaroni Grill near the Concord, N.C. resort where he'd taken his bereaved brood. The Enquirer says Hunter asked the younger kids to "call me Mommy." John and Elizabeth Edwards' marriage produced four children: Cate, 28, a Harvard-trained lawyer who lives in Washington; Jack, now 10, and Emma Claire, 12; their oldest child, Wade, was killed in a freak auto accident in 1995 when he was 16.
In an interview early last month with Jill Lawrence of Politics Daily, Raleigh lawyer Bonnie Weyher, a close friend of Elizabeth Edwards since law school, said she didn't know of any relationship between the children and Hunter: "Not that I know of, no. That's not to say they won't in the future."

Weyher did say she knew Edwards had seen his youngest daughter, but she couldn't speak to his relationship with Rielle. "I don't know what the situation is. He's never discussed her with me."

The Enquirer, in its inimitable breathless prose, wrote that "The bombshell decision by Rielle to step into Elizabeth's still-warm shoes is a huge slap in the face to her memory, and a direct violation of her dying wishes, say those close to the Edwards family."

The tangled triangle has been playing out in the press since the Enquirer's first story broke. Hunter upped the yuck factor last spring by posing in a shirt and not much else for a lengthy interview in GQ. She discussed her hurt when Edwards initially and vehemently denied paternity, and then renewed his wedding vows with his wife. Contrary to reports that he discussed marrying her on a Manhattan rooftop as the Dave Mathews Band performed, she contends "we have not spoken about any wedding plans."

On the other hand, she told GQ that marrying Edwards would be "the fairy-tale ending!"

Before anyone asks where the couple might register for silver and china -- Elizabeth changed her will shortly before her death, leaving all such domestic goods to her three kids -- John Edwards still has a federal grand jury probe to worry about.
Last month, two former aides from his 2008 White House run appeared before prosecutors investigating whether campaign finance laws might have been violated by transferring political contributions to support Hunter and baby Frances.

Enquirer Editor-in-Chief Barry Levine wouldn't reveal anything beyond what was in a copy of the story his office faxed to me late Thursday (the tabloid isn't available on newsstands in Washington until Friday or Saturday), and the on-line version won't get posted until Monday.

So I asked whether he thought he might be invited to the wedding.

"No comment," he replied.

Permalink | Email this | Linking Blogs | Comments

The 112th Congress Kicks Off With Prayers and Parties

Filed under: Senate, House, Democrats, Republicans, 2010 Elections, Congress, Republic of Dish
It took the ever-weepy John Boehner exactly three minutes to cry after entering the House chamber Wednesday, before he'd even taken the oath as speaker. Just steps from the well, he whipped out his trademark white hankie, wiped his eyes and ascended to the dais. He teared up once again on the platform where Speaker Nancy Pelosi delivered her own farewell with trembling hands, and then executed the transfer of power from Democrats to Republicans by handing Boehner her outsize wooden gavel.

After a thunderous ovation, he managed to deliver a dry-eyed speech before being sworn in by Rep. John Dingell, D-Mich., who first took office in 1955 when Boehner was just 6 years old. His wife, Debbie, their two daughters, ten of his 11 siblings and assorted other kin beamed as they watched from a visitors' gallery on the Democratic side of the chamber.

The opening day of the 112th Congress was fraught with conflicting emotion: jubilation among House freshmen -- who constitute 20 percent of the 435 members -- and their families, as well as more senior Republicans, who are back in charge after four years in the minority; dismay among diminished Democrats, now heavily outnumbered 239 to 135. Losing their majority means they've had to give up everything from powerful committee chairmanships to choice office space.

House freshmen began the day at a bi-partisan service at St. Peter's Catholic Church a few blocks from the Capitol, where they prayed for guidance and wisdom. Then they joined the full House for a collective oath-taking in which all swore to uphold and defend the Constitution. By custom, members' children and grandchildren under 12 were allowed on the floor for the proceedings, with the older ones seated in the visitors' galleries.

Also roaming through the chamber Wednesday were a few ex-members, including former Vice President Dan Quayle, whose son Ben was elected in November to represent Arizona's 3rd District, and "Morning Joe" host Joe Scarborough, who before his MSNBC and other broadcast gigs was a Republican congressman from Florida.

By mid-afternoon, members were re-enacting their oath-taking one by one with Boehner. The 250-strong photo-op brigade included several prominent Democrats, including Rep. Charlie Rangel of New York, who last month was censured by the House for ethical misconduct, and two members of the party leadership, Debbie Wasserman-Schultz of Florida and John Larson of Connecticut.

All over Capitol Hill, freshmen and veterans alike were celebrating. In an ornate hearing room of the Dirksen Senate Office Building, some 100 supporters of Roy Blunt, R-Mo., reveled in his rise from the House to the so-called "world's greatest deliberative body." Nibbling on cookies and drinking Diet Coke, they broke into cheers as the first quartet of senators -- including Blunt -- gathered around Vice President Joe Biden to take the oath of office.

The formalities over, the Senate got down to work trying to solve the legislative gridlock caused by the filibuster, or non-stop talk-a-thon. In a promising, or at least opening day show of collegiality, several senators -- including Republicans Lamar Alexander of Tennessee, Pat Roberts of Kansas and Democrat Tom Harkin of Iowa -- actually crossed the partisan aisle to address one another. At the time, there were a mere four journalists in the press gallery, but 50 visitors in the public gallery.

On the House side, dozens of backers of second-termer Glenn "G.T." Thompson, R-Pa., well before the 12:30 pm swearing-in to glad-hand their congressman. Talk about a meteoric career path. "I never thought I'd have the opportunity to serve in the majority. I only got here two years ago and I am already a subcommittee chairman for conservation, energy and forestry on the Agriculture Committee."

Freshman Republican Andy Harris used the occasion to promote a little local agriculture of his own, giving special friends and donors who thronged his office bottles of white wine produced on Maryland's Eastern Shore. The area may not have the cachet of say, California's Napa Valley, but Harris was happy to brag on the Boordy and St. Michael's whites.

Permalink | Email this | Linking Blogs | Comments

The Top Five Scandal, Divorce or Remorse Stories, From Abramoff to Sanford

Filed under: Republic of Dish, Analysis
Prison. Scandal. Adultery. Delusion. Death. Divorce. Remorse. And always, reinvention.

It's been quite the year for denizens of the Republic of Dish, including a quintet of individuals or couples seemingly poised for next acts in 2011.

Washington uber-lobbyist Jack Abramoff is writing a book about influence peddling, a subject he knows intimately. He left prison in June after serving 42 months for corruption and fraud, did another six months of work-release at a Kosher pizzeria in Baltimore, and is now on probation. Abramoff, who lives outside Washington, is not using a ghostwriter, a source tells me. Yes, Jack "crossed the line" nearly half the time he spent working as a Republican fixer/fundraiser/lobbyist. But the majority of his wheeling and dealing was "business as usual'' legal. In other words, the system stinks.

"Who better than he to tell you why so-called reforms won't work?" asked the source, hinting at "other options" in Abramoff's future beyond the book. Yes, the fledgling author saw both "Casino Jack" films, the documentary as well as the Kevin Spacey feature about his exploits. His Facebook page could use updating.

Long-suffering Elizabeth Edwards, estranged wife of two-time (and two-timing) presidential candidate John Edwards, died of cancer Dec. 7, leaving behind three children. Her death came weeks after her husband's (possibly) former mistress, Rielle Hunter, hit Hollywood seeking romance. The National Enquirer -- which broke the oft-denied story of the politician, the paramour, and their love child -- reports Hunter hoped to contact old flames Matt LeBlanc and John Cusack. Though John Edwards assured Elizabeth he'd quit seeing Hunter, Elizabeth told People last summer she didn't completely believe him. He reportedly visits Frances Quinn Hunter, age two.

A far more serious potential problem for Edwards is legal: Two ex-aides from his 2008 White House campaign recently talked to the ongoing federal grand jury probing whether he improperly diverted campaign funds to Hunter.

Al and Tipper Gore had already celebrated their 40th wedding anniversary when the former vice president and his photographer/mental health advocate wife announced their amicable split via e-mail. The news brought gasps of disbelief and dismay from millions of strangers, even as close friends insisted there were no third parties, just late-in-life marital ennui.

Last summer, Seattle police declined to re-open an old case involving allegations that Gore made improper sexual moves on a hotel masseuse who'd told her story to the Enquirer. The globe-trotting Nobel Prize and Oscar winner continues to warn against climate change.

Michaele and Tariq Salahi, who will be eternally known for allegedly breaching security at the Obamas' first White House state dinner in 2009 and refusing to discuss it on Capitol Hill in January, promise a "really huge" new venture in 2011. "It has something to do with retail," was all Michaele -- whose infamous red sari fetched $7,000 at an autumn charity auction -- would tell me.

As for "The Real Housewives of D.C.," in which costars dissed the Salahis with overt and subtle barbs, the Bravo cable network hasn't announced a second season. Michaele said the couple would be "surprised" if they were dropped, never mind that Cat Ommanney, the tart-tongued Brit, threatened to quit the show if the duo returned.

South Carolina Gov. Mark Sanford's second term ends next month and already the conservative Republican has given $250,000 in surplus campaign funds to charity. The big question is what's next for the once-rising GOP star forced to confess a long affair with his Argentine "soulmate" after sneaking off to Buenos Aires for a springtime tryst. No word yet.

Meanwhile, ex-wife Jenny Sanford, mother of the couple's four sons, won plaudits for bolting rather than standing by her mate. She wrote "Staying True" about the ordeal and started to date again. Nothing serious so far but she did tell Dr. Phil, "I just have to make sure I pick someone who maybe loves me back."

Permalink | Email this | Linking Blogs | Comments

Ex-Husband of NYT 'Vows' Bride Carol Anne Ridell Tells His Side

Filed under: Woman Up, Republic of Dish
Bob Ennis, whose ex-wife, Carol Anne Ridell, left him to marry a family friend, ripped as "revisionist history" and a "choreographed puff piece" the new couple's version of their romantic history as recounted in a splashy Sunday New York Times wedding story.

In a phone interview with Politics Daily, Ennis also blasted the Times for "providing a megaphone" for Riddell and John Partilla III to "whitewash" the account of how they met and fell in love at Manhattan's private St. Hilda's and St. Hugh's Episcopal Day School attended by both couples' children. The Times piece chronicled the bride's detailed account of the duo's epic struggle against falling in love before they ultimately chose to break up two marriages involving five youngsters.

A firestorm of criticism and some expressions of support quickly ignited across the Internet, in print and broadcast media since Sunday. The Times took the unusual step of adding a comments section to the story, which provided an immediate venue for venting.

On Tuesday, the groom said if he had known how virulent the reaction would be -- some accused the couple and the Times of promoting "homewrecking"-- they would have not have offered themselves up as the featured nuptials of the week.

Indeed, on Tuesday Ridell also had taken down photos of herself and Partilla from her Facebook page.

Ennis said he had no warning the story was coming, and feared the effect on all of five kids. "Not only do my two children watch TV and surf the Internet, they may actually grow up to read about it in newspapers. They all talk with each other at school. Now I have to do damage control. Who needs it? Enough already. . . . Somebody has to protect these kids."

Worse yet, he said, "I had no idea my 7-year-old daughter's picture would be in the paper. My lawyer thinks there should be a family court action." If there were no children involved, he added, "all of this would be 'Who cares?' It's evident that it's a story about two sad, narcissistic people who want to justify themselves to the world."

Ennis and Riddell share custody, but she maintains the primary residence for their son, 9 and daughter, 7.

Ennis, a banker, married Riddell, a longtime TV journalist and co-anchor, in 1994. She met Partilla -- who was married to Karla Beth Trafate in 1995 -- at St. Hilda's and St.Hugh's pre-school in 2006. By 2008, Riddell and Partilla said they were struggling to find a way to be together, though Ridell made a point of spelling out to the Times that she did not sleep with Partlla until after both couples had separated.

Because Partilla has spent years in the advertising business, and Ridell was a well-known Manhattan TV personality, Ennis said it was easy for them to pitch the idea for a Times story to yet another well-connected parent at their kids' school -- New York Times Executive Editor Bill Keller: "You have a bunch of insiders doing one another a favor."

Permalink | Email this | Linking Blogs | Comments

'Brady Bunch' Meets 'Scarlet Letter': NYT 'Vows' Tale Ignites Firestorm

Filed under: Woman Up, Republic of Dish
The romance between a dynamic, attractive Manhattan TV news anchor and a hunky triathlete and ad exec was called "part 'Brady Bunch' and part 'Scarlet Letter'" in the New York Times' Sunday Vows column.

Collectively, Carol Anne Riddell and John Partilla had five young kids and two spouses when they met in 2006 at a pre-kindergarten classroom on the Upper West Side. The families became close enough to dine and vacation together.

You know, of course, where this is leading.

They fell madly in love, finally admitted it to each other but say they refrained from having an affair. Instead, after much see-sawing, soul-searching and second-guessing, they broke up their marriages, lived apart, lived together, and tried to cope with all the devastation. They were divorced from their respective spouses last year, married each other last month, and then held a celebration attended by their offspring and dozens of well-wishers.
Yes, it happens, but usually not with such tortured and tortuous detail in the prime media real estate known as the Vows column, although New York magazine tracked a trend toward including two-timing twosomes last year. One could argue convincingly that Sunday's saga seemed better tailored to the angst-heavy, confessional "Modern Love" column than the often sappy-happy-obstacle-overcoming wedding section, particularly if one peruses blogs such as YouBeMom, written by a couple of ex-New Yorkers.

Was there any newsroom debate at the Times about the pain such a big story might inflict on the children and the aggrieved exes? Any attempt to contact the unnamed first spouses?

If there was, no one is talking. Instead, communications director Danielle Rhoades Ha offered this breezy explanation:

"The Vows feature gives a close-in account of a wedding every week. Every one is different. We don't attempt to pass judgment on the suitability of the match, the narrative of the romance, the quality of the ceremony or the flavor of the wedding cake."

On Monday, however, the bride happily chatted with Forbes.com, saying they chose to be featured in Vows "because we just wanted one honest account of how this happened for our sakes and for our kids' sakes. We are really proud of our family and proud of the way we've handled this situation over the past year. There was nothing in the story we were ashamed of."

Bob Ennis, Carol's ex, begs to differ, telling Politics Daily Tuesday that the account was a "whitewash" of the romance and that he worried about the story's affect on the five children involved.

Not surprisingly, there has been a firestorm of reader reaction, some outraged, some empathetic. It ranges from "Why does the Times glorify home-wrecking?" to gratitude for "the honest reflection" of two adults "who did not actually cheat on their spouses" to "Soul mates indeed. And people get up in arms about gay marriage."

Riddell called the backlash "sort of surprising to me. I think people are focusing a lot on the negative, but there was a lot of positive. We've had a lot of people say to us how brave we are to do this, how commendable it was that we were as honest as we were."

She wouldn't say whether she and Partilla gave their exes either a heads-up or veto power, although the former spouses are now easily findable via Forbes' links to their original Times wedding announcements.

For a little perspective, I called Stephanie Coontz, an Evergreen State University professor specializing in marriage and family issues, who e-mailed her thoughts while in Hawaii.

"I am disturbed by the tendency to use the marriages and divorces of people we don't know as an ink-blot test for our own anxieties about love, marriage, commitment, and parenting, so I don't think the world needs to hear my opinions on this particular story. What does concern me, not just with this couple, but with so many other marriages and divorces, is people's willingness to invite such commentary by taking their piece of the story public, instead of working with the other adults involved to develop a narrative that doesn't require their children to take sides or to hear things about their parents that they really do not want or need to know."

Meanwhile, the guy with potentially the most to gain from the story going viral is Times nuptial chronicler Devan Sipher, a four-year freelancer who, having told his employer he was working on a novel, just sold a thinly veiled roman a clef about, well, a wedding writer who can't find a bride to call his own.

If the plot sounds vaguely familiar, think "27 Dresses," the Katherine Heigl comedy about a perennial bridesmaid.
The poor thing is smitten with her sister's fiance, but ultimately finds love with the reporter who outs her "never-the-bride" life in the hopes the story will get him promoted.

Who knows -- maybe Ridell and Partilla can introduce Sipher to Ms. Right. And if she has to leave a husband or boyfriend to find happiness with the wedding writing novelist, Vows will be all over it.

Every day of the week, in frigid winter and torpid summer and seasons in between, when lawmakers are in session or when they're out of town, at least one worker will clamber onto the Capitol roof and proceed to run an unknown number of American flags up and down one of three poles.

This drill is repeated approximately 100,000 times a year.

It is unclear how long it takes to unfold each flag, hook it to a line, raise, lower, unhook, refold and rebox it. My guess is under one minute.

"Not an extended period of time" is what I'm told by Eva Malecki, communications chief for the Architect of the Capitol, which runs the flag office, a minor part of its jurisdiction over the sprawling buildings and grounds of the Capitol campus, Supreme Court, Library of Congress and U.S. Botanic Garden.

Why then do select laborers spend time up on the roof doing flag duty?

Two words: Constituent service.

Like tracking lost Social Security checks or nominating high schoolers to West Point, senators or representatives sell American flags that have "flown over the Capitol" to anyone making a timely request (four to six weeks in advance) and proper payment (between $17.05 for a three-by-five foot nylon stars-and-stripes and $28.05 for a five-by-eight cotton version). The price includes a certificate of authenticity, suitable for framing. It contains the date, and a personalized message, if there is one. Not so long ago, "God" could not be part of that message. But in 2007, bowing to pressure from lawmakers, acting Capitol Architect Stephen T. Ayers decided he did not need to double as chief of the prose police.

In an age of instantly obsolete gadgets and out-of-fashion fashions, a "flown" flag makes a pretty affordable, unique birthday, anniversary or wedding gift. Not surprisingly, July 4, Veterans Day, Memorial Day, presidential inaugurations and 9/11 are far busier than, say the days of Uncle Fred's mid-October retirement as Rotary president or little Jessica's June graduation from pre-school. The one-day record, according to the Clerk of the House, was set July 4, 1976, when 10,471 flags were ordered to mark the nation's Bicentennial. One of them was mine.

Being an intrepid reporter, I recently asked to go out on the roof to witness and photograph the ritual that began in 1937 when an actual senator wanted a flag that flew over the Capitol for himself. Everybody got in on it by the '40s.

Being a seasoned spokeswoman who probably gets such cliched roof requests with alarming frequency, Malecki turned me down flat, partly for reasons of liability, partly to minimize jealousy among other workers whose Architect's Office jobs are not considered as story-worthy, and partly because of what she called "security implications," which I took to be a euphemism for anti-terrorist sharpshooters on the roof.

The three flagpoles used for this operation cannot be seen from the streets below, she said. And every effort is made to protect the banner brigade from the elements.

"When it's extremely hot, they do it very early in the morning," Malecki said. "If it is very windy and blustery and not in their best interest to be out, we try to schedule work so we are not putting them at risk."

The mail-order flags should not be confused with those that flap from a pair of highly visible staffs rising above the House and Senate chambers. Those fly only when the respective legislative bodies are in session.

We're now approaching Christmas, but don't even think about getting one in time to put under the tree. Rather, open a 2011 calender, do the math, send in you money and know that if you act quickly, you may be able to get a flag that flew over the Capitol on Groundhog Day.

The news comes a week after Putin, Russia's former president and macho former spy chief, crooned a hilarious, heavily accented cover of "Blueberry Hill" at a glitzy charity event in St. Petersburg. The Fats Domino classic soon went viral.

Putin, 56, is married to a former flight attendant, has two daughters and a penchant for public displays of manliness, from bare-chested horseback riding to driving a Formula 1 race car.
Kabayeva, 27, who was a year old when Putin wed Lyudmila Shkrebneva, is a former Olympic rhythmic gymnast who medaled at the Sydney and Athens games. Like other attractive young female athletes and dancers, Putin named her to the Duma, the Russian parliament. They have denied any romance. The paternity of her son, born last year, remains a secret.

Geo-political tea leaf readers don't seem to agree on the intended message of the Vogue cover.

The New York Post's cheeky Page Six, hardly a foreign policy oracle but quite often right on the money gossip-wise, quotes nameless sources suggesting that by allowing the shoot, the Kremlin strongman is poised to publicly acknowledge the affair. "This could be just the first step toward their eventual public relationship," according to one Russian expat cited by the Post. "Some believe he wants to make Alina into a star." Kabayeva appears on the Vogue cover with the headline "Her Main Victory."

The cover is the first for new editor Viktoria Davydova since she took over Vogue in July. It is bound to be controversial, if not downright risky. When rumors of an affair surfaced in 2008 in a Russian newspaper owned by billionaire Alexander Lebedev, Putin denied a relationship. The paper was later shut down -- on Putin's orders, some said. Kabayeva gave birth to a boy in 2009, and Page Six reported the child was Putin's, though she's never identified the father.

American journalist Bill Thomas, author of "Red Tape: Adventure Capitalism in the New Russia," tells Politics Daily that publicly flaunting a lover would be in keeping with Putin's short-guy/tough-guy persona. "He's like a little bantam rooster. He is a former Kremlin thug cultivating a macho rock star image. I think it's all part of this effort to make Russia -- which is undergoing a brain drain -- seem like a cool place to live and make money if you are young, smart, ambitious and sexy. He is trying to make staying in Russia a cool thing to do."
In April 2008, London's Daily Mail noted that Putin "appeared to relish being linked to a beautiful gymnast less than half his age as he gave a press conference alongside Italian leader Silvio Berlusconi -- himself no stranger to allegations of womanising." Putin denied rumors he would divorce Lyudmila to marry Alina, but he "seemed to enjoy playing up the image of a ladies' man," the newspaper said.

Permalink | Email this | Linking Blogs | Comments

Britain's Ex-PM Gordon Brown Urges Economic 'American Marshall Plan'

Filed under: Republic of Dish, European Union, Economy
Former British Prime Minister Gordon Brown launched his book tour here for "Beyond the Crash: Overcoming the First Crisis of Globalization," with two grateful observations about Washington: "It's not snowing" and "there are no students rioting."

The recent protests -- including an attack on the royal Rolls Royce containing Prince Charles and Camilla Parker Bowles -- began after the Conservative-Liberal Democrat ruling coalition announced plans for deep spending cuts and steep tuition increases.

But Brown, who left the top job in May after stunning Labor Party election losses, was focused Saturday night on global, not domestic finance, and the role of the United States in worldwide recovery.

Brown told senior White House adviser David Axelrod that people want leadership, "like the American Marshall Plan," which helped put Europe back on its economic feet after World War II. "If America leads, they will follow," Brown said. "You have to make it big, not a small initiative." And he offered to help the Obama administration "in any way I can," at a book party thrown by media impressaria Tammy Haddad and Jefferson Hotel owners Connie Milstein and J.C. de La Haye Saint Hilaire,

In brief remarks, Brown -- among the first world leaders to rescue troubled banks at home in 2008 -- warned that "for the time in 200 years, America and Europe are being out-produced, out-invested, out-traded and out-exported" by other nations, and that the solution to the global crisis was to tap into a billion middle-class consumers in Asia who in 10 years will have twice the buying power of Americans.

Brown repeated that same message on the ABC News program "This Week," saying that while Asia and China had to consume more, "Europe's got to reform its markets."

"America is prepared to invest in the future, while doing its fiscal consolidation," Brown said. "And that would mean, in my view, that you would have this exit strategy from a crisis based on high growth and high employment and not low growth and what I fear is high unemployment for a decade."

The former prime minister -- who earlier in his career spent a decade as finance minister -- warned that the immediate danger "is that people cut back in education, which is vital for the future, that people cut back on their international contacts, because they think the solutions lie in national answers to their problems, when they lie in global cooperation."

"And," he said, "I think the danger is, you have a '30s-style protectionism where people relapse into currency wars, as we're seeing, or trade wars or banning takeovers that have got cross-border ramifications, or simply a protectionism in of the mind, where anti-immigrant sentiment gets to the point that we're not really talking to each other in a way that means that we have a coordinated world."

After a day in Washington, Brown headed to New York to continue hyping the book. But those seeking dishy gossip of the sort that Brown's predecessor, Tony Blair, and other New Labor memoirists have offered up recently, will have to look elsewhere.
