The case against Caroline Giuliani was adjourned in contemplation of dismissal -- that is, sealed and closed as long as the young woman keeps her nose clean and completes a day of community service work. "Stay out of trouble and avoid rearrest," Judge Jennifer Schecter told her.

The Harvard University student did not speak to reporters and was escorted out of the Lower Manhattan courtroom by her mother, Donna Hanover, the Associated Press said . They got into a waiting Hyundai SUV.
Caroline Giuliani was arrested on a misdemeanor charge after she was seen on a security video on Aug. 4 at Sephora in Manhattan. The store is part of Paris-based LVMH Moet Hennessy Louis Vuitton, a luxury goods outfit.

Rudy Giuliani wasn't at his daughter's court appearance. He was known during his time as mayor for a crackdown on petty crime -- the "broken windows" theory of law enforcement -- a policy credited with improving the quality of life in New York. When he first ran for president as a Republican in 2007, Caroline Giuliani showed up listed as a member of Barack Obama's Facebook group, supporting the Democrat's candidacy. She left the group when questioned about it, and then didn't comment on the presidential race.

Her mother, Ms. Hanover, went through a messy divorce with Giuliani while he was mayor.

Permalink | Email this | Linking Blogs | Comments

Sarah Palin: Fighting Fact-Checkers Over Taxes from a Fishing Boat

Filed under: Barack Obama, Rudy Giuliani, Media, Taxes, Sarah Palin, Obama Administration, Woman Up

Sarah Palin won't let anything drop. Not even when she is on a fishing boat in Homer, Alaska.

Early Saturday -- 12.07 a.m. to be exact - Palin launched another round via Facebook in her row with PolitiFact, the fact-checking arm of the St. Petersburg Times, over Democrats' possible tax increases and the George W. Bush tax cuts expiring at the end of the year.

The fight began a week ago when Palin said on Fox News that Democrats could levy new taxes on Americans over a 10-year period. "No, this is going to result in the largest tax increase in U.S. history," Palin told Fox News' Chris Wallace. The website, PolitiFact, which won a Pulitzer Prize in 2009, gave her remarks its "Pants on Fire" rating. (Yes, as in liar, liar...).

In her latest post titled, "Pants on Fire, Still," Palin fanned her followers' fears that "a $3.8 trillion tax increase is coming down the pike, folks."

Palin said she will continue to call on the Obama administration and the Democratic majority in Congress to protect "mom and pops' tax cuts from expiring at year's end.
She wrote, "Granted, liberals (including stubborn 'fact-checkers' who claim I'm lying about the soon-to-be tax cut expiration) are trying to clobber me for holding them accountable and prodding them toward revealing their intentions..."

Palin accused PolitiFact of "moving the goal posts in their second dissembling 'fact-check' on the Democrats' tax hikes," and basically agreeing with her statement.

The 2008 GOP vice-presidential candidate lobs one attack after another in her post: "PolitiFact is curiously stating that in his 2011 budget, the President mentioned some 'plan' to do something about not raising taxes on all Americans. Um, don't know about you, but I don't find this general, vague promise of some 'plan' all that reassuring."

After her own explanation of Obama's budget, she writes, "Bottom line: until we see a formal proposal - an actual bill before Congress -- then get ready for that $3.8 trillion hit."
The back-and-forth between PolitiFact and Palin has continued for days. On Friday, PolitiFact responded to Palin's statement in a previous Facebook post about Democrats non-existent plan to extend the Bush tax cuts.

The website called that Palin assertion "False" followed by a detailed explanation. "We're not trying to antagonize Gov. Palin, but President Barack Obama has indeed published his proposals in some detail -- at least twice, in the annual budget documents that the White House releases."
PolitFact site has cited Palin three times previously with the "Pants on Fire" truth-o-meter ranking, concerning her statements about health care reform death panels, Obama's "experiment with socialism" and Palin's own run-in with ethics laws.

But in her Mama Grizzly fashion, Palin's not backing down. She closes her latest post with a dig at the Left, "By the way, the Left sure gets wee-wee'd up when they're called on something like this, eh?"

Palin said she wrote the post on a commercial fishing boat in Alaska where she's "working my butt off for my own business, merely asking the Democrat politicos and their liberal friends in the media: 'What's the plan, man?'"

Palin says that the "Left" feels threatened by her question.

"So, I'll go back to setting my hooks and watching the halibut take the bait, and when I come back into the boat's cabin in a few hours, I'll log back on here to read their reply," she said.

Palin is out to win this battle. "I'll have succeeded if they're forced to finally reveal to Americans how they plan to increase taxes, and what they intend to do with our money," she said. "In the meantime, I'm catching fish."
No doubt, Palin is itching for several rounds with the accurate PolitiFact.

To his annoyance he got the most notoriety for his donations to President Nixon.

In 1988, Steinbrenner was pardoned by President Reagan for his conviction on charges of obstruction of justice and conspiring to make illegal contributions to Nixon's 1972 reelection campaign. Steinbrenner's guilty plea brought a $15,000 fine and a ban from baseball that lasted nine months. But according to Salon, the "Boss" favored Democrats when it came to congressional races, giving $133,850 to individual candidates and party committees between 1980 and 2010. Among the beneficiaries: Rep. Charles Rangel (D-N.Y.), Sen. Chuck Schumer (D-N.Y.), former Sen. George Mitchell of Maine (a Red Sox fan), and Hillary Clinton's 2008 presidential campaign.

Steinbrenner also contributed to former President George H.W. Bush's campaigns, the 2000 Bush-Cheney Florida recount fund, former New York Mayor Rudy Giuliani and Sen. John McCain's 2008 presidential campaign.

A native of Rocky River, Ohio, a Cleveland suburb, Steinbrenner made part of his fortune as head of the American Shipbuilding Co. in Lorain, Ohio. He was often lampooned affectionately on the television series "Seinfeld," where he was played by a gruff-talking actor, always pictured from behind and fond of firing employees at the drop of a hat. Steinbrenner celebrated his 80th birthday on the Fourth of July.

Permalink | Email this | Linking Blogs | Comments

Nikki Haley Finishes First in South Carolina GOP Primary, Faces Runoff

Filed under: House, Democrats, Republicans, Rudy Giuliani, Woman Up, Governors, 2010 Elections

In one of the most-watched races in the country - for reasons that have nothing to do with actual issues - Nikki Haley finished first in the Republican gubernatorial primary in South Carolina on Tuesday.

Recent accusations of infidelity and a GOP state senator's ethnic slur only seemed to strengthen the campaign of the 38-year-old Haley, who won close to half of the vote. But though she finished far in front of the other three candidates, she did not get the 50 percent plus one vote needed to avoid a runoff.

State Rep. Haley will face second-place finisher U.S. Rep. Gresham Barrett on June 22. In conservative South Carolina, the winner will be the favorite to win the November general election to replace term-limited Republican Gov. Mark Sanford.

Haley - who would become the first female governor of South Carolina - preferred to stress her conservative credentials and her background as an accountant with a message of fiscal responsibility.

"When Nikki Haley becomes governor, every day is going to be a Tea Party," she said at a recent Rock Hill, S.C., campaign stop, acknowledging the groups behind her success. If Haley won in November, she would join another conservative Republican, Bobby Jindal of Louisiana, as one of two U.S. governors of Indian-American descent.

State Attorney General Henry McMaster trailed far behind Haley and Barrett (despite a last-minute endorsement by former New York mayor and presidential candidate Rudy Giuliani), as did Lt. Gov. Andre Bauer, who had to give up his office to run for governor.

The executive director of the powerful Republican Governors Association is sending a not-so-subtle message that Haley is the group's preferred choice, according to The New York Times. In a statement that does not mention her opponent, Nick Ayers said: "The voters of South Carolina made a clear choice in Nikki Haley, notwithstanding the possibility of a runoff. The outcome is all but certain. Nikki Haley withstood a barrage of inuendoes and slurs in the closing days of the primary season and persevered to the finish with dignity, determination and confidence. Moreover, receiving half of the votes against two other statewide incumbent Republicans and a sitting Congressman speaks volumes of her strength as a candidate and bodes very well for her in the General Election."
State Sen. Vincent Sheheen won the Democratic nomination for governor, said The Associated Press, over state Education Superintendent Jim Rex and state Sen. Robert Ford. Sheheen was endorsed by Jim Hodges, the party's last governor.

"What is clear is that the people of South Carolina have spoken today, and what they've said is that South Carolina is ready for new, conservative, accountable, leadership. And that Nikki Haley is the leader to bring it to them," Haley's campaign said in a statement.

She has also made a dent in the "good old boy" culture.

In the last two weeks, the GOP primary campaign made national headlines when both a conservative blogger and a campaign consultant for rival Bauer claimed affairs with Haley, who denied the accusations. State Sen. Jake Knotts then used the slur "raghead" to describe Haley and President Obama on an online political show. (The Lexington County Republican Party has scheduled a Thursday meeting to discuss a response to the remark.)

Sarah Palin's support of Haley - one of the conservative female candidates Palin calls her "mama grizzlies" - has been unwavering. Palin campaigned with Haley in South Carolina last month, defended her on Facebook and recorded a call to voters that said, in part, that Haley "isn't afraid to take on the entrenched powers." The former Alaska governor and vice presidential candidate said in the message: "When you do that, they come after you with all kinds of made-up nonsense to try to knock you down."

Jenny Sanford, the ex-wife of the current governor -- who must be grateful that Haley's troubles moved his Argentine adventures off the radar - also endorsed Haley.

At campaign appearances, Haley was often accompanied by her husband, Michael, who was featured in a television ad with their two children. In the ad, Haley said, "I've seen the dark side of our state's politics and I know the bright side of our state's people." She spoke about her Methodist faith (her parents are Sikhs) and the importance of family.
Appearing before supporters Tuesday night, The New York Times reported, Haley said to her husband: "This is what kept me strong," adding, "I think he'll make a cute first man, don't you?"

South Carolina voters seemed anxious to move past the allegations of infidelity. Either they ignored the claims, sick of the ridicule and eager to discuss more substantive issues, or warmed to Haley because of it. Polls showed that Haley's support increased after the allegations and crowds at recent rallies expressed sympathy and cheered her on.

In another closely watched South Carolina race, U.S. Rep. Bob Inglis is also headed to a primary runoff; the Republican finished second to prosecutor Trey Gowdy in his bid for a fourth straight term. The winner on June 22 faces Democrat Paul Corden, who was unopposed in his primary.

Inglis was attacked from the right for not being conservative enough despite endorsements from the American Conservative Union, the National Rifle Association, National Right to Life and the U.S. Chamber of Commerce. He was criticized for supporting federal bailouts and he was also one of only six Republican House members who joined nearly all Democrats in voting to punish Congressman Joe Wilson for violating House conduct standards. "I just have this notion that we should apply the rules fairly, without regard to partisanship," Inglis said in The State newspaper about that vote.

Joe Wilson, the South Carolina congressman known for shouting "You lie!" at President Obama, easily won his Republican primary in the 2nd District, besting businessman Phil Black. Wilson, 62, will face Democrat Rob Miller in the fall. Both raised record campaign contributions after Wilson's outburst.

And in an unusual development, an unemployed military veteran surprised South Carolina Democratic Party leaders by winning the nomination to challenge Republican U.S. Sen. Jim DeMint, according to an Associated Press report. Alvin Greene, 32, defeated 64-year-old Vic Rawl, a former judge and legislator from Charleston. Rawl had already scheduled a fund-raising event for Thursday. Democratic Party Chairwoman Carol Fowler told the AP that the win by Greene -- who raised no money, had no signs and no Web site - may be due to people who voted alphabetically.

Charlie Crist is considering an independent campaign for the Senate as fellow Republicans abandon him in a GOP primary race against former Florida House Speaker Marco Rubio. The latest blow came Tuesday when U.S. House Republican Whip Eric Cantor (R-Va.) endorsed the conservative Rubio, calling him "just the kind of leader our country needs."

Cantor's blessing came a day after the head of the National Republican Senatorial Committee declared in an e-mail that Crist had "zero chance" of winning as a Republican and should drop out of the primary contest if he is mulling an independent campaign.

Crist, a moderate, told the Associated Press he is making a thoughtful and deliberate effort, guided by Florida residents, to decide on whether to launch an independent campaign. A decision is likely soon, since the filing deadline for the Aug. 24 primary is April 30.

Crist, once a darling of the GOP as a popular big-state governor and the runaway leader in early Senate surveys, trails Rubio by an average of nearly 23 points in the latest polls. His recent veto of an education bill aligned him with teachers' unions in the state and infuriated Republicans such as former Sen. Connie Mack, who resigned as his campaign chairman. Cantor's endorsement of Rubio -- a favorite of the Tea Party movement -- followed similar nods from Mitt Romney and former New York Mayor Rudy Giuliani.

It's been a fast fall from grace for the photogenic Crist, who had been seen as a prospect for the number two spot on the Republican national ticket in 2012, and went into the race to succeed Republican Sen. Mel Martinez as the heavy favorite, once leading in polls by as much as 30 points, according to the Washington Post.

His problems with conservatives date back to early last year and "the hug" -- when he was photographed embracing President Obama after praising the $787 billion stimulus package and gladly accepting Florida's share. The Florida governor has refused to disavow the hug and soldiers on at Republican campaign events, but he may now be reconsidering his options.

Crist is not the only mainstream Republican to face the wrath of the right this year: Sen. Kay Bailey Hutchison lost her challenge to Texas Gov. Rich Perry, and Sen. John McCain is in a tight primary race in Arizona against outspoken conservative J.D. Hayworth, a former U.S. House member.

Should Crist choose to run as an independent, he would be following a path similar to one Connecticut Sen. Joe Lieberman took in 2006. Lieberman lost the Democratic primary but won the general election as a third-party candidate. He now labels himself an "independent Democrat," but often sides with Republicans.

Cantor, in endorsing Rubio, said in a statement issued Tuesday by the Marco2010 campaign: "America needs energetic, smart, responsible leaders to start making sure that Washington once again starts working for the people, and Marco will play a big part in that effort." And no hugs, one presumes.

Permalink | Email this | Linking Blogs | Comments

Obama, Giuliani, Clinton in Massachusetts as New Senate Poll Shows Trouble for Coakley

Filed under: Senate, Rudy Giuliani, Polls, Bill Clinton, 2010 Elections

BOSTON - A few yards from a statue of Paul Revere, with at least one man shouting "the liberals are coming, the liberals are coming," Rudy Giuliani opened a weekend of celebrity politicking Friday in a Massachusetts Senate race that has suddenly turned into a cliff-hanger.

About 300 people gathered in a park in Boston's Italian North End to cheer on Giuliani and his candidate, Republican state Sen. Scott Brown, whose rapid ascent is threatening not only Democrat Martha Coakley but health reform and the rest of President Obama's agenda in Washington.

A new poll Friday from Suffolk University showed Brown with a 50-46 percent lead over Coakley, the attorney general once considered a sure bet in the special election Tuesday to succeed the late Sen. Edward Kennedy. If Coakley loses, Democrats will lose the 60-vote majority they need to cut off Republican filibusters and pass bills.

Giuliani told Massachusetts voters to send Obama and his party a "loud and clear" signal by electing Brown. A few hours later, speaking to some 700 Coakley supporters in a hotel ballroom, former president Bill Clinton implored the same voters not to "repeat the mistakes" of eight years under national Republicans. "You just have to decide whether you want us to be a tomorrow country or a yesterday country," he said, adding that Coakley is the "tomorrow" candidate.

The last thing Democrats expected was that the race in this usually reliable Democratic state would imperil Kennedy's life's work on health care. His sons and widow have mobilized to help Coakley, as have Obama and core Democratic constituencies such as unions. Clinton did rallies with Coakley on Friday in Boston and Worcester. Highlighting the stakes for Democrats, Obama himself will be here Sunday.

Energized conservatives have been pouring money into Brown's campaign since it became clear a week ago that he had a shot at winning. Giuliani, the former New York mayor who became known as "America's mayor" in the wake of 9/11, said Paul Revere "warned about danger and woke up the people of Massachusetts and New England at a much earlier time in our history. And we need Scott now to wake us up about some of the mistakes that we are making."

A Brown victory would be a clear protest against Democratic policies on terrorism, spending, and health care reform, Giuliani said, and added: "If the people of Massachusetts do it, boy, it'll be heard all around the country." He and Brown said Coakley doesn't understand the terrorist threat to the United States.

Brown depicts himself as a non-partisan everyman. "This is a historic election to bring common sense back to Washington," he said. He opposes Obama's plans on health, energy, the economy and financial regulation. He also opposes Obama's proposed fee on banks to recoup tens of billions in bailout money that they received to keep them from collapse. He said Friday that banks would pass the cost to consumers.

Coakley's campaign announced a four-day "Fighting For You" tour across the state. She framed the race in those terms at the rally with Clinton. "The choice is clear. Scott Brown will fight for the wealthy, for Wall Street. I'm going to fight for you," she said.

Democrats at the rally said Brown's approach to "common sense" would mean working with Capitol Hill Republicans to kill Obama's initiatives and restore the policies that voters rejected in the 2008 election. "This is an extraordinary camouflage campaign," said Sen. John Kerry, who appeared using a cane after a recent hip replacement operation. "For eight years he was George Bush's yes man. Now he wants to go to Washington and become (Senate Republican leader) Mitch McConnell's no man."

There are more than three times as many Democrats as Republicans in Massachusetts, but more than half the state's voters are not registered with any party.

Permalink | Email this | Linking Blogs | Comments

Rudy Giuliani Says Obama 'Turned a Corner' on Terrorism

During a "Good Morning America" appearance on Friday, former New York City mayor Rudy Giuliani had some rare positive words for the president.

"I'm very hopeful that President Obama turned a corner yesterday," Giuliani said. "He first used the words 'war on terror,' thank goodness. He hasn't done that since he was a candidate."

The slight compliment came after Obama said Thursday that systemic security failures allowed accused Christmas Day bomber Umar Farouk Abdulmutallab to board a Detroit-bound flight, and also came amid an avalanche of criticism for the administration's handling of the matter. Some of those criticisms center on the decision to try Abdulmutallab in a civilian court. Giuliani said the presence of a lawyer during Abdulmutallab's questioning after his arrest and the "artificial" 30-hour time limit on interrogation placed ludicrous limits on the information Abdulmutallab could provide.

Permalink | Email this | Linking Blogs | Comments

Polls Differ on a Thompson Challenge to Gillibrand in New York

Filed under: Senate, Rudy Giuliani, Primaries, Polls, Poll Watch, 2010 Elections

A pair of polls out today differ on how well New York City Comptroller William Thompson Jr. would do if he challenges Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand for the Democratic nomination, but at this point, neither is conclusive given how many voters haven't really focused on that possibility.

Thompson ran a surprisingly strong race against Mayor Michael Bloomberg, despite the millions of his own money Bloomberg poured into the mayoral contest. Thompson was reportedly considering a primary race against Gillibrand, who hails from upstate, and is expected to decide next month, according to the New York Times.

A Quinnipiac University poll conducted Dec. 7-13 had Thompson ahead of Gillibrand 41 percent to 28 percent with 28 percent undecided. A Siena Research Institute poll conducted Dec. 6-9 puts Gillibrand ahead of Thompson by 32 percent to 23 percent, but says more than a third had not decided on a candidate to support.

But both Democrats trail former New York City mayor Rudolph Giuliani in general election match-ups. In the Quinnipiac poll, Giuliani leads Gillibrand 50 percent to 40 percent with 8 percent undecided. The margin of error is 2.4 points for the general election match-up. Giuliani would get the votes of 92 percent of Republicans and 23 percent of Democrats. Gillibrand is supported by just 68 percent of Democrats. Independents favor Giuliani by 57 percent to 32 percent.

Giuliani leads Thompson 52 percent to 36 percent with 9 percent undecided. Again. Giuliani would siphon off 25 percent of Democratic votes, and leads among independents by 60 percent to 28 percent.

One of Gillibrand's problems still seems to be that she hasn't made great progress in getting New York voters to know her better since her appointment to the seat vacated by Hillary Clinton. Fifty-eight percent of voters say they don't know enough about her to express a favorable or unfavorable opinion. By contrast, Giuliani is seen favorably by 59 percent of voters and unfavorably by 32 percent with only 7 percent not knowing enough about him to express an opinion.

Siena's poll had similar results. Giuliani leads Gillibrand 49 percent to 42 percent. The margin of error is 3.8 points. He leads Thompson 56 percent to 34 percent.

Not "Why did he cheat on his wife?" Infidelity is so much a part of human history that the question is all but boring.

My question is: Why did he think he would not get caught?

In the year 2009, when the slightest rumor about relative unknowns travels at blog-speed, how does one of the most recognized humans on the planet imagine that he can commit what I suppose we still need to call alleged multiple "transgressions" without it being discovered?

I've asked myself the same kind of question over the years about a whole series of politicians whose names became punch lines: Clinton, Giuliani, Kilpatrick, Spitzer, Sanford, Edwards. Given what was at risk, given how controlled and accomplished they were in other areas of their lives, given what they surely should have known about the guys caught before they were, I fall back on the question that Jay Leno asked Hugh Grant in 1995:

What the hell were you thinking?

Start the political series with former Sen. Gary Hart, who famously challenged the press corps to follow him -- and was apparently stunned when reporters from The Miami Herald did exactly that. After all, the men's club of political reporters had a long history of closing ranks to ignore politicians screwing around. And never more so than about one of Hart's heroes, John F. Kennedy.

But the rules had changed by that day in 1987, when Hart told the assembled reporters: "Follow me around. I don't care. I'm serious. If anybody wants to put a tail on me, go ahead." What happened next killed what had looked like a potentially successful run for the White House. Surely the famous photo of Donna Rice on Hart's lap, taken on the yacht with the you-can't-make-this-up name of "Monkey Business," served as ample warning for all men to heed?

Apparently not.

Woods, let's grant, is not a politician. Most pro athletes have far less to lose than most politicians if they get caught in these transgressions. And it's true that as long as Tiger Woods, golfer, can stay out of criminal court and stick a 5-iron for a easy eagle putt, he'll make a nice living and get paid to endorse any links gear that strikes his fancy.

But Tiger Woods, the carefully managed product, obviously had higher aspirations. An athlete who transcends his sport, race and gender to appeal to pretty much anybody, he's been selling an image at least as much as a set of physical skills.

A measure of the impact these revelations have had can be found in one form of widespread public reaction: The jokes, from the professionals on the nighttime talk shows to the instant yuks generated by regular folks. And for a public figure trying for a serious image, there may be no more damaging experience than being ridiculed. The newest tech has made it easy for anybody to use Tiger as a target.

My favorite example so far in the Woods scandal is the Tiger Woods Slow Jam Remix. (And here's an Original Bonus Joke: He actually had been telling his wife the truth, but in Yiddish. So she thought he told her he was going out for some work on his putts...)

Leave aside his marriage and family, which any cheating spouse puts at risk. Like the politicians, Tiger may have been risking part of his career. And he did it in a particularly dumb fashion. If Tiger took the same approach with his mashie as he did with his mash notes, he'd have never won a tournament.

E-mails? Text messages? Voice mail? Anything digital these days is the modern equivalent of a billboard on Time Square. And to do the dirty with women for whom, it appears, discretion is not a key part of their value set?

Why would he think he'd be able to get away with it? Why did any of those other guys think they could?

I tracked down a few experts about infidelity and asked them just that. Their answers were dishearteningly similar. None of these guys thought they would get caught, the experts agreed, because they weren't thinking.

Here's an anthropologist's take:

"We're talking about a brain system that evolved millions of years ago to drive us to do some of the most important things we do on in our lives," said Helen E. Fisher, research professor of anthropology at Rutgers and the author of several books on the biological and evolutionary basis of love and sex.

She means that "be fruitful and multiply" thing. The drive to sow as many seeds as possible, for some men, overrides the front-brain systems that calculate risk and benefit. And once a guy does it once, and doesn't get caught, that makes the risk look smaller and kills the rational fear of getting caught.

"You've gotten used to it and those brain parts have shut down. They've won for years. After a lot of winning, you figure you'll keep winning. Don't forget how profound the sex drive is," she said.

How about a sociologist's point of view?

"People in lust are irrational. They believe this woman is special, they believe they are special," said Pepper Schwartz, sociology professor at the University of Washington in Seattle and, no kidding, relationship expert at Perfectmatch.com. "They believe they are different, smarter, that they have a love-trust relationship. We know better, but we are not in love/passion, so we can think clearly. And so can they in the cold light of day -- but by then, its too late."

Ruth Houston is a self-made infidelity expert. Once a victim, she turned her pain into a career and started researching the topic. She's the founder of InfidelityAdvice.com and the author of "Is He Cheating on You? 829 Telltale Signs." And she gets quoted a lot by people like me, partly because she seems to make sense.

Even in an era when someone else's peccadillo seems to be exposed every day, many men realize the risk of getting nabbed really isn't as large as one might think, she said. People such as Woods -- or Edwards, Giuliani, et al. -- probably know other men who manage to keep their affairs out of the public eye.

"They are in the company of men who do get away with it. They don't even see it as a risk," she said.

But e-mail? Voice messages? The ever-growing list of others whose families and careers were wrecked?

"They aren't thinking that it is ever going to touch them," she said. "They look at the guy who got caught and say, 'He was stupid.' "

Well, surely this new scandal will put the fear of discovery, if not God, into famous cheating men who have not been outed, right?

"They might be a little bit more cautions for the next, oh, 10 days or so," Houston said. "And then it's back to business as usual."

Permalink | Email this | Linking Blogs | Comments

Gillibrand Still Struggling to Make Her Name Known Across New York

Filed under: Senate, Rudy Giuliani, Polls, Poll Watch, 2010 Elections
When Kirsten Gillibrand was named earlier this year to fill the seat vacated by Hillary Clinton, the conventional wisdom was that if she hoped to win a full term next year in her own right, she would have to make herself better known across New York. The latest poll numbers show she still has her work cut out for her.
Thirty-nine percent of voters rate her job performance as "fair," 25 percent say it is excellent or good (only 3 percent say "excellent"), and 12 percent call it "poor," according to a Marist poll conducted Nov. 16-17. But the important number may be that 24 percent don't know enough about her to express an opinion. By contrast, only 4 percent of New Yorkers don't know enough about senior Sen. Charles Schumer to have an opinion.

Fellow Democrats have tried to help her raise her visibility. Last July, she was given a moment in the spotlight when she formally introduced then-Supreme Court nominee Sonia Sotomayor to the televised Senate Judiciary Committee hearings. But Gillibrand took a few too many moments and after about six minutes, Judiciary Committee Chairman Patrick Leahy cut her off.

A Marist poll released last week said that if former New York City Mayor Rudolph Giuliani challenged her, he'd be leading 54 percent to 40 percent, with 6 percent undecided.

If former Gov. George Pataki were her opponent, Pataki would be leading 47 percent to 45 percent, with 8 percent undecided. The margin of error is 3.5 points.

Paterson, he would likely have faced an uphill battle against Mr. Cuomo, one of the most popular politicians in the state."

Permalink | Email this | Linking Blogs | Comments

Cuomo Leads Giuliani in a New York Governor's Match-Up

Filed under: Rudy Giuliani, Polls, Governors, Poll Watch, 2010 Elections

Former New York City Mayor Rudy Giuliani wouldn't say on Sunday's talk shows whether he would run for governor in 2010, but if he did -- and faced Attorney General Andrew Cuomo -- he'd find himself trailing by 53 percent to 41 percent, according to a Siena Research Institute survey conducted Nov. 8-12. That margin for a match-up between the two is about the same as it has been since September.

If Gov. David Paterson stays in the race, as he insists he will, and gets the Democratic nomination to run again, he'd find himself trailing Giuliani, 56 percent to 33 percent. But the poll also found that if Paterson faced Cuomo in a primary, he'd lose by 75 percent to 16 percent. In a general election, even former Republican Rep. Rick Lazio leads Paterson, 42 percent to 39 percent. And that's with 50 percent of voters not knowing enough about Lazio to have an opinion of him.

The margin of error is 3.5 points.

The New York Times reports today that Cuomo is already thinking about who he would want to run with him on a statewide ticket if he makes his bid for thge governor's job.

We're no longer going to treat these people as if this was an act of war," said former New York City mayor Rudy Giuliani on Fox News Sunday.

Giuliani, who appeared on three different talk shows, was reminded by his interviewers that he had praised the use of civilian trials for those who bombed the World Trade Center in 1993 and of Zacarias Moussawi, the so-called "20th hijacker" in the Sept. 11 attack, as examples of the strength of the American legal system.

"If there's no other alternative, I support civilian trials for terrorists," Giuliani responded. "The reality is there is another alternative here...He (President Obama) should bring them to justice in a military court. We spent six or seven years developing a constitutionally permissible military tribunal. He's satisfied with it. He's going to use it."

Giuliani was referring to the fact that while Khalid Shaikh Mohammed, who has claimed credit for conceiving the Sept. 11 attacks, and four accused co-conspirators would face a criminal trial in New York under the decision announced Friday by Attorney General Eric Holder, five other Guantanamo detainees charged in the 2000 bombing of the Navy destroyer Cole in Yemen would face military tribunals.

Officials said that one of the factors in choosing a military tribunal for the second five was that their target was a military one.

Rep. Pete Hoekstra, ranking Republican on the House Intelligence Committee, called the administration decision "ideology run wild."

"You can bet that folks that are going to be tried and their lawyers are going to try to use this opportunity to extend it as long as they can, because this is what they wanted," he said on CBS' Face the Nation. "They wanted center stage, and they're going to want to keep it for as long as they can. They will bring every motion forward that they can that will drag this trial out."

But Senate Judiciary Committee chairman Patrick Leahy strongly defended the administration decision, saying, "We have a judicial system that is the envy of the world. Let's show the world that we can use that power. We can use our judicial system, just as we did with Timothy McVeigh, and send the people -- and convict the people."

Leahy said he wasn't worried the sometimes theatric Mohammed would use the trial as a world stage. "I have a lot of faith in our judges, Leahy said, also on Face the Nation. "They know how to run a trial. They know how to keep decorum in their court. If Khalid Shaikh Mohammed wants to stand up and say, as he did in Guantanamo, I committed all these murders, I did all these things, fine. If I was a prosecutor, I would just sit there and let that jury hear it, because he's going to be convicted."

Leahy also said he believed the prosecution would be able to get a conviction despite the fact that some information was obtained from Mohammed after he was waterboarded numerous times.

"They indicted him long before this waterboarding," Leahy said. "They had evidence enough to bring indictments against him long before that...I have no question that they have enough evidence untainted by the waterboarding that will be admissible in court."

Leahy's fellow Democrat, Sen. Jack Reed, echoed many of those views on Fox News Sunday. "If we try him before military officers, that image of a soldier will be portrayed by the Islamic community," Reed said. "That's not the image we want...When the foreman of that jury stands up and delivers the verdict, not empowered by religious fanaticism, by -- but the Constitution, he will know he's lost."

Permalink | Email this | Linking Blogs | Comments

Cuomo Leads Paterson Among Black Voters

Filed under: Rudy Giuliani, Polls, Poll Watch, 2010 Elections
New York Attorney General Andrew Cuomo leads Gov. David Paterson, the state's first African-American governor, by 51 percent to 24 percent among black voters in a Democratic primary matchup, according to a Quinnipiac University poll conducted Oct. 14-19.

"If there's a racial issue in a matchup between Gov. David Paterson and Attorney General Andrew Cuomo, these numbers don't show it. Black Democrats back Cuomo hands down, and black voters in general give Cuomo better grades than the Governor on every measure -- even in a race against [former] Mayor Rudolph Giuliani," said Quinnipiac's Maurice Carroll.

The poll basically confirms what other recent polls in New York have reported. If Giuliani faces off against Paterson in a general election, he leads 54 percent to 32 percent, but Cuomo beats Giuliani, 50-40. Paterson would run even with Republican Rep. Rick Lazio at 38 percent, while Cuomo would trounce Lazio, 61 percent to 22 percent.

Giuliani would beat incumbent Gov. David Paterson, 56 percent to 33 percent with 11 percent undecided, if the race were held today, compared to a 52-35 margin last month. If Attorney General Cuomo were the Democratic candidate, Cuomo leads Giuliani by 50 percent to 43 percent with 6 percent undecided, compared to 52-39 last month.

Forty-nine percent say they'd like to see Cuomo run for governor, setting up a primary against Paterson, while 36 percent prefer that he seek re-election to his current job. The poll said Cuomo would beat Paterson by 70 percent to 20 percent if he ran.

Matched against Gillibrand for Senate, Giuliani leads 53 percent to 36 percent with 10 percent undecided, up from 46 percent to 38 percent last month. If former Republican Gov. George Pataki ran against Gillibrand, he'd win, 46 percent to 41 percent with 13 percent undecided. The margin of error for the poll was 3.9 points.

Former Republican Rep. Rick Lazio, who announced his candidacy for governor last month, doesn't fare well. As unpopular as Paterson is, he leads Lazio, 39 percent to 37 percent with 23 percent undecided -- within the margin of error but a much worse showing than the better-known Giuliani. Cuomo would bury Lazio by 66 percent to 21 percent with 14 percent undecided.

We've saved New Yorkers' verdict on Paterson till last because the story remains unchanged for the ninth consecutive month: His favorability rating is below 40 percent and his job approval rating is below 25 percent.

David Paterson to run again next year, they did not like President Obama's attempt to meddle in state politics, saying by 62 percent to 27 percent that the White House was wrong to urge him to drop out, according to a Marist Poll conducted Sept. 22.

That view was held by 51 percent of Democrats and 77 percent of Republicans (some of whom, given Paterson's poor poll numbers, probably should be rooting for someone to press him to remain a candidate).

The numbers remain about the same when voters were asked whether they thought the White House was wrong, even if Paterson's presence at the top of the ticket would hurt other Democratic candidates. Sixty percent still disapproved of the White House move, and Democrats said by 48 percent to 42 percent that Obama should have kept hands off.

Paterson said at a news conference Tuesday that when Obama encountered him on the tarmac at the Albany airport during a visit to the state on Monday, the president "expressed a little chagrin about the process in the situation." The New York Times and other news outlets had reported that White House political director Patrick Gaspard had met with Paterson and told him that the president had lost confidence in him and would not back him if he ran.

Voters are split on whether they think Paterson on the ticket would, in fact, hurt other Democrats, with 43 percent saying it would and 41 percent saying it wouldn't. The margin of error is 4 percentage points.

Paterson's job approval numbers remain in the tank, with 44 percent ranking him as poor, 35 percent as fair and only 17 percent as good or excellent.

As far as the New York Senate race, Marist said that former New York City Mayor Rudy Giuliani would beat Democrat Kirsten Gillibrand 51 percent to 40 percent if he chose to run. Nine percent were undecided. Former Republican Gov. George Pataki had a weaker showing, leading Gillibrand 45 percent to 41 percent, with 14 percent undecided. Seventy-one percent of voters say they would prefer someone else as governor, up three points from August, according to a Siena Research Institute survey conducted Sept. 13-17. Democratic voters favor Attorney General Andrew Cuomo over Paterson by 66 percent to 20 percent.

Former Republican Rep. Rick Lazio announced today he is running for governor, and perhaps the only consolation for Paterson in the poll is that he actually leads Lazio, 39 percent to 35 percent. The margin of error is 3.5 points. Lazio lost to Hillary Clinton in the 2000 U.S. Senate race. His problem is still being relatively unknown, with 53 percent of voters having no opinion of him when asked if they view him favorably or unfavorably.

If former New York City Mayor Rudolph Giuliani were to join the race, he'd beat Paterson, 52 percent to 35 percent. Cuomo leads Giuliani in the poll by 52 percent to 39 percent and Lazio by 64-18.

Paterson is seen unfavorably by a 59 percent to 29 percent margin, a seven-point negative swing since last month. Thirty-nine percent say he is doing a poor job, 41 percent rate him as fair and 16 percent as good, about the same as August. Seventy-three percent describe Paterson as well-intentioned but not getting the job done and 63 percent say he doesn't have the necessary leadership skills to be governor.

Cuomo is seen favorably by a 66 percent to 21 percent margin, and 47 percent of voters would like to see him run for governor compared to 34 percent who prefer he seek re-election as attorney general. Giuliani's favorable-to-unfavorable ratio is 56 percent to 38 percent.

Permalink | Email this | Linking Blogs | Comments

Rudy Giuliani Flirting With a Run for N.Y. The former Republican mayor of New York City and presidential candidate has told associates he will likely make his decision in the next 30 to 60 days and will announce it after the Nov. 3 city elections.

According to The New York Times, Giuliani sees parallels between the current political conditions in Albany -- the combination of the economic recession and public disapproval of Democratic Gov. David Paterson -- and those in New York City before his successful run for mayor in 1994.

"If I thought that I could make a real difference in the state, really change things and it really needed me, then I probably would do it," Giuliani said earlier this month when asked about running for governor.

He discussed his possible candidacy with New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg recently. He has also been traveling around the state in recent weeks to meet with state GOP leaders to assess his support and the likelihood of reclaiming the governor's mansion for the Republicans, according to The Times.

Giuliani is the leading potential Republican candidate, according to a Rasmussen poll conducted earlier this month. Other possible GOP candidates include Rep. Peter T. King, who has said he would step aside if Giuliani got in the race, and former Rep. Rick Lazio, who is already campaigning and will formally announce his candidacy in the fall.

Lazio - whom I served as press secretary when he was in Congress -- responded to me in an e-mail. "New York is severely hampered by out of control spending and a rising tax burden that's crippling working families," he wrote.

"With a dysfunctional government on top of that, its even clearer that New York needs a leader who can help it to regain the title of Empire State once again. We need sweeping, systemic, fundamental change so New Yorkers can have the government they want and deserve."

In a general election, the poll showed Giuliani favored by more than 20 percent of voters over Paterson. If the opponent were Democratic Attorney General Andrew Cuomo, Giuliani trails by seven points, 41 to 48 percent.

Giuliani's aides, however, say that his decision will not be influenced by Cuomo, who is not expected to decide about running until next year.

"Rudy never did worry who his opponent is. If he decides to run, it won't matter if Cuomo is the Democratic candidate," Guy V. Molinari, the former Staten Island borough president, told The Times after meeting with Giuliani two weeks ago to discuss a potential race.

While Giuliani mulls and flirts, Lazio has been running full-out for governor in a state in dire need of fresh ideas on the economic crisis, energy to tackle the multitude of issues in Albany and the confidence to declare his candidacy based on the needs of the people of the Empire State. Go Rick!
