Looking for ideas? Check out the incredible list of gifts from foreign governments given to President Obama, First Lady Michelle, daughters Sasha and Malia, Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton and others.

The law forbids federal employees -- Mrs. Obama and the kids, too -- from keeping any gift from a foreign government worth more than $350, so most items end up in a vault, perhaps to be sold someday. Some presents -- such as vases and rugs -- can be kept by an agency for display in government offices.

The State Department periodically releases a list of gifts; the latest inventory, covering 2009, came out this year in the Federal Register.

By far, the Saudi Arabian government spent the most on gifts that year (an estimated value of some $300,000), followed by Qatar (about $70,000).

Most of the gifts went to the first couple, with the most expensive single item going to Mrs. Obama. Saudi Arabian King Abdullah bin Abd al-Aziz Al Saud gave her a ruby and diamond jewelry set of earrings, a ring, a bracelet, and a necklace with an estimated value of $132,000.

Since it is against the law to keep such goodies, why do federal employees -- from the president on down -- accept them? The answer is diplomacy. The official reason each gift was accepted is the same in the Federal Register: "Non-acceptance would cause embarrassment to donor and U.S. government." Federal employees have the option to purchase gifts, but only a handful did. Former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi received three E. Marinella scarves from Italian President Silvio Berlusconi -- valued at $877.50 -- and bought one of them.

Here's a look at some other givers and receivers in 2009:

-- Queen Elizabeth presented the president and Mrs. Obama with two framed photos, one of her majesty and another of her husband, Prince Phillip, valued at $775.

-- Chinese President Hu Jintao gave the president a silk embroidered portrait of the first family ($20,000) and a porcelain sculpture of five oxen ($1,200).

-- Obama received two books, one titled "Scottish Estate Tweeds," and a Johnstons cashmere sweater from former British Prime Minister Gordon Brown ($1,019).

-- Berlusconi gave Obama a Francesco Basile gold watch ($6,400) and what is listed as a "large crystal table with an image of the American flag" ($6,000).

-- Dutch Prime Minister Jan Peter handed over a bicycle from Batavus, a Dutch manufacturer ($1,480).

-- Turkish President Abdullah Gul gave Obama cuff links from the Turkish jewelry designer Sevan Bicakci and a blue and silver glass vase ($1,550). From German Chancellor Angela Merkel, a leather Montblanc briefcase ($760), and from Japanese Prime Minister Taro Aso, a Mikimoto desk clock and a basketball jersey ($1,495.)

-- Some gifts to Mrs. Obama were lavish: from the First Lady of Ghana, Ernestina Mills, an 18-karat gold watch with diamonds valued at $48,000; from the First Lady of Japan, Miyuki Hatoyama, a freshwater pearl necklace ($9,700); from the First Lady of France, Carla Sarkozy, a black Christian Dior handbag ($4,500); from the Saudi king, a necklace made with 33 pearls and sterling silver ($14,200), and from a German senator, a Franck Muller watch ($12,895).

-- Sasha and Malia Obama also got some nice stuff: from the Saudi king, diamond earrings ($3,500); from Republic of Korea President Lee Myung-bak, pink and orange scarves, a teddy bear, a jewelry box, two Samsung digital cameras, and brocade silk fabric, and from Svetlana Medvedeva, wife of the Russian president, nesting dolls ($500).

-- Gifts intended for the entire first family: six pieces of kente cloth, necklace, earrings and bracelet from the first lady of Ghana, ($615). Sarah Brown, the former first lady of Great Britain, gave the Obamas a Harris Tweed shawl of Herbide fabric, shirts, sunglasses, skirts and other clothing ($485). The Prime Minister of Mauritius gave the first family a wooden replica of the USS Constitution and Swarovski crystal figures ($1,400), and the Prime Minister of Ireland, Brian Cowen, gave paintings and a Waterford crystal bowl ($3,281).

-- For Secretary of State Clinton, gifts from foreign officials were all over the map: gifts from France included a $390 Hermes sterling silver purse and a $750 package with a Hermes silk scarf and Louis Vuitton bag. From Kosovo, came a $390 traditional Kosovo vest and from Russia a $950 large lacquer box. Pakistan offered a $1,015 framed portrait of President Clinton, and Afghanistan President Hamid Karzai gave her a blue lapis marble bowl worth $820.

-- Defense Secretary William Gates got a ceramic model of the Reichstag, worth $425, from his German counterpart. King Abdullah of Jordan gave him a military dagger and a sterling silver note pad with his military insignia, worth $445, and with his wife, the queen, a $900 rifle. The Egyptian Minister of Defense gave him a shotgun, pictures and frames worth $985.

-- Joint Chiefs of Staff Chairman Michael Mullen received a tribal rug from elders from a village in Afghanistan worth $450. The commander of the Turkish Armed Forces gave him a set of highball glasses and a vase worth $725.

-- Attorney General Eric Holder got a woman's Rolex watch valued at $10,023 and a man's Rolex watch worth $10,008 from his Qatar counterpart, as well as a ceremonial sword.

Permalink | Email this | Linking Blogs | Comments

White House Taps Gay Man, Jeremy Bernard, for New Social Secretary

Filed under: Obama Administration, The Daily FLOTUS with Lynn Sweet, Michelle Obama, White House
The new White House social secretary is Jeremy Bernard -- the first man and first openly gay person -- tapped for the job. He will replace Julianna Smoot, who is leaving to become the deputy manager of President Obama's 2012 reelection campaign.

Smoot's departure has been known for weeks; she stayed around for the big National Governors Association dinner on Sunday.

Bernard, 49, is the Obama administration's third social secretary. Smoot -- who was finance director of the Obama 2008 presidential campaign -- was the second. The first social secretary was Desiree Rogers, who was also the first African-American in that role. Rogers left in the wake of a flap over Tareq and Michaele Salahi, accused of crashing the Obama's first State dinner in 2009. She is now back in Chicago, a top executive at Johnson Publications.

The Washington Post is reporting that Bernard was a major Obama fundraiser whose former partner, Rufus Gifford, is currently the Democratic National Committee finance director. The White House East Wing confirmed to Politics Daily that Bernard and Gifford were business partners in a political fund-raising and consulting firm. Though the DNC has not made it official, Politics Daily has reported that Gifford will lead the fundraising efforts for the Obama 2012 reelection campaign.

Bernard at present is a Senior Advisor to the U.S. French Ambassador in Paris. Before that, he was the White House Liaison to the National Endowment for the Humanities from 2008 to 2010. He has been a regular White House visitor and on Oct. 1, according to White House visitor records, Bernard met with Smoot.

From the White House: "(Jeremy Bernard) joins the White House staff from the U.S. Embassy in Paris, where he serves as Senior Advisor to the Ambassador. Prior to this role, he worked as the White House Liaison to the National Endowment for the Humanities.

"Jeremy shares our vision for the White House as the People's House, one that celebrates our history and culture in dynamic and inclusive ways. We look forward to Jeremy continuing to showcase America's arts and culture to our nation and the world through the many events at the White House," the president said.

"Bernard said he was "deeply humbled to join the White House staff as social secretary and support President Obama and the First Lady in this role. I have long admired the arts and education programs that have become hallmarks of the Obama White House and I am eager to continue these efforts in the years ahead."

"Tina Tchen, chief of staff to First Lady Obama, said she looks forward to working with Bernard on a wide range of White House activities, "from fun and educational student workshops to elegant State dinners that welcome world leaders to the White House. Jeremy's creativity, perspective and skills will be a welcome addition to our East Wing team. . . "

"Bernard's "humor, good will and high standard of professionalism" set him apart at his job at the National Endowment for the Humanities, said NEH Chairman Jim Leach.

Bernard's biography, from the White House: "A native of San Antonio, Texas, Bernard currently serves as Senior Advisor to the Ambassador at the U.S. Embassy of Paris. He served as the White House Liaison to the National Endowment for the Humanities from 2008 to 2010.

"Previously, Bernard was a California Finance Consultant for the Obama for American campaign. He was a Principal of B&G Associates from 2007 to 2009, Vice-President of Mapleton Investments from 1999 to 2006 and Director of Government Affairs of Falcon Cable TV from 1996 to 2006.

"Appointed by President Clinton, Bernard served on the President's Advisory Committee on the Arts for the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts and was a member of the Democratic National Committee from 2001 to 2009.

"He previously served as a board member of A.N.G.L.E. (Access Now for Gay & Lesbian Equality) and the National Gay & Lesbian Victory Fund. He was also a member of the Los Angeles County Sheriff's LGBT Advisory Committee, the Los Angeles Police LGBT Advisory Committee and the Los Angeles Mayor's LGBT Advisory Committee."
The events were capped by the president and wife Michelle showing some moves during the finale, "Dancing in the Streets."

The Motown tribute was the latest in the Obama White House's music series, with the East Room hosting Motown artists and performers honoring the company Berry Gordy founded in Detroit in 1960.

Gordy was at the show, along with the Obamas' youngest daughter, Sasha, Mrs. Obama's mother, Marion Robinson, and Vice President Joe Biden and his wife, Jill, all seated in the front row.

The performers included Natasha Bedingfield, Sheryl Crow, Jamie Foxx, Gloriana, Nick Jonas, Ledisi, John Legend, Amber Riley, Mark Salling, Seal, Jordin Sparks, Smokey Robinson and Stevie Wonder -- one of the first lady's favorites. Other Motown stars were in the audience, including Martha Reeves, a former Detroit City councilwoman (in an earlier part of her career, of course, she headlined Martha and the Vandellas).

The Detroit News put it this way: "During the finale, Reeves jumped up, joined the crowd and grabbed a mike and had an extended solo of the song -- 'Dancing in the Street' -- that helped make Reeves and the Vandellas famous."

The show opened with a medley of Motown hits from Foxx, Seal, Jonas and Legend, mixing it up with "Ain't Too Proud to Beg," "Get Ready" and "I Can't Get Next to You."

Sparks performed the Supremes' classic "Stop! In the Name of Love."

The president told the audience of about 200 that Motown tunes helped break down racial barriers in the U.S.

"Along the way, songs like 'Dancing in the Streets' and 'What's Going On' became the soundtrack of the civil rights era. Black artists began soaring to the top of the pop charts for the first time. And at concerts in the South, Motown groups literally brought people together -- insisting that the ropes traditionally used to separate black and white audience members be taken down," Obama said.

"So, today, more than 50 years later, that's the Motown legacy. Born at a time of so much struggle, so much strife, it taught us that what unites us will always be stronger than what divides us. And in the decades since, those catchy beats and simple chords have influenced generations of musicians, from Sheryl Crow to the Jonas Brothers."

Earlier in the day, Mrs. Obama hosted a music workshop spotlighting the Motown sound, with about 120 high school students from Chicago, Cleveland, Detroit and Los Angeles.

The Motown rags-to-riches story should inspire them, Mrs. Obama said.

"But the thing that I want you all to remember is that nobody's name is printed on the Billboard Top 10 at birth. Nobody is born into this. Neither Mr. Gordy nor Smokey Robinson were born into greatness or wealth. Diana Ross grew up in a housing project. And John Legend is the son of a seamstress and a factory worker. And they are good people.

"But they've shown us that with enough hard work and a willingness to take some risks, anyone can make it. And this isn't just true for careers in entertainment or sports. The Motown story is really a metaphor for life."

Permalink | Email this | Linking Blogs | Comments

Michelle Obama to Promote Breastfeeding as IRS Gives Tax Breaks for Nursing

Filed under: The Daily FLOTUS with Lynn Sweet, Michelle Obama
First lady Michelle Obama will be speaking out to remove barriers to breastfeeding, Politics Daily has learned, throwing the spotlight on nursing as a way to reduce childhood obesity.

This comes as the Obama administration in the past year has made several moves to encourage breastfeeding -- including a push for more flexible workplace rules and an Internal Revenue Service ruling on Thursday that breast pumps and other nursing supplies qualify for tax breaks.

Mrs. Obama -- who has spoken in public about nursing her youngest daughter, Sasha -- is going to tread carefully in what might be a sensitive area for some women -- and not use her bully pulpit to directly ask more women to breast feed.
"Breastfeeding is a very personal choice for every woman," Kristina Schake, Mrs. Obama's communications chief, told Politics Daily. "We are trying to make it easier for those who choose to do it."

Last week, Mrs. Obama touched on breastfeeding strategy at a lunch with 10 print reporters who cover her to mark the first anniversary of her "Let's Move" anti-childhood obesity campaign.

Looking ahead to what she will do in the second year of "Let's Move," Mrs. Obama said: "We also want to focus on the important touch points in a child's life. And what we're learning now is that early intervention is key. Breastfeeding. Kids who are breastfed longer have a lower tendency to be obese.

"We want to get into child-care centers, day-care centers, and start talking about how -- what kind of snacks they're getting there. We want to have those conversations at an earlier level. But those are just some of the things that you'll see."

Breastfeeding rates are low among African-American mothers compared to other racial and ethnic groups, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, and Mrs. Obama took note of this when she addressed the Congressional Black Caucus Conference on Sept. 10.

"And because it's important to prevent obesity early, we're also working to promote breastfeeding, especially in the black community -- where 40 percent of our babies never get breastfed at all, even in the first weeks of life, and we know that babies that are breastfed are less likely to be obese as children," she said.

Robin Schepper, executive director of "Let's Move," told Politics Daily, Mrs. Obama wants to increase breastfeeding rates but "is not telling women to breastfeed ... but wants to make it easier for moms by encouraging hospitals to change practices so after a baby is born, the baby is in the room with them."

Toward that goal, Mrs. Obama is going to push more hospitals to be certified as "Baby Friendly" by Baby Friendly USA, a non-governmental organization that works with the United Nations Children's Fund, or UNICEF, to increase breastfeeding opportunities. Only 3 percent of births occur at U.S. hospitals with the "Baby Friendly" designation."

In a "Let's Move" policy report issued last May, one of the problems mothers may have with breastfeeding starts in the hospital where after birth, "many babies are unnecessarily given formula and separated from their mothers, making it harder to start and practice breastfeeding."

Meanwhile, the Internal Revenue Service announced Thursday that the costs for "breast pumps and supplies that assist lactation are medical care" are now, under the IRS code eligible for tax breaks. That means that breastfeeding supplies could be treated as deductible medical expenses and/or be reimbursed under flexible spending plans.

In the child nutrition bill President Obama signed Dec. 13, the WIC program for low-income women -- the nickname for the Special Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants, and Children -- provides more breastfeeding counseling and supplies to eligible mothers.

The Affordable Care Act signed by Obama on March 13 -- the health care overhaul Republicans are trying to repeal -- requires certain employers to give nursing mothers break time and a place -- not a bathroom -- to express milk. The Labor Department is in charge of enforcement; the law covers a baby's first year.

Obama also ordered federal agencies to provide time and private space for nursing mothers and is encouraging bosses to give the same treatment to professional women who may not be covered by Labor Department rules.

White House senior adviser Valerie Jarrett -- and chair of the White House Council on Women and Girls -- noted in a post at www.whitehouse.gov last December that workplace rules have a major impact on a woman's decision whether to nurse.

"While 75 percent of women initially breastfeed their baby, after six months only 43 percent are still breastfeeding at all," Jarrett wrote. "One of the most common reasons mothers cite for discontinuing breastfeeding is returning to work and not having break time or a private space to express milk. Many studies have shown these types of worksite supports help women continue to breastfeed after returning to work."

Permalink | Email this | Linking Blogs | Comments

President Obama Kicked Smoking Habit, Michelle Says

Filed under: The Daily FLOTUS with Lynn Sweet
First Lady Michelle Obama said President Obama finally kicked his smoking habit and has not had a puff for about a year.

She revealed that during a lunch interview with ten print reporters who cover the East Wing. The meeting was organized to mark the first anniversary Wednesday of her "Let's Move" anti-childhood obesity campaign. After interviews Wednesday morning on NBC's "Today Show" and "Live with Regis and Kelly," Mrs. Obama travels to Atlanta to deliver a "Let's Move" anniversary speech.

Mrs. Obama's session with her press corps touched on a variety of topics. Asked if Obama stopped smoking, she said, "Yes he has, yes he has. Very proud," she added. "Totally."

In 2007, Mrs. Obama made her husband promise to quit smoking as a condition to getting her support for his presidential bid.

"It's been almost a year," Mrs. Obama said of Obama's last smoke. "But I don't know exactly when because he never smoked a lot to begin with, so I never saw him smoke." For those who want to know more about his smoking habit, "You have to talk to him."

Asked for more details on how the president finally quit, something he has been struggling with for years, Mrs. Obama said, "He's always wanted to stop. I think our kids are getting to the age where he wants to be able to look them in the face, because they want to know, 'You don't smoke, do you dad?' He wants to be able to say nope. It's always really for the kids. I haven't really poked and prodded him on this because when somebody is doing the right thing, you don't mess with him."

The group interview took place over lunch featuring greens from the White House garden--vegetables growing on the South Lawn in the winter protected by hoop houses. Lunch entrees were a choice between seared rack of lamb, which Mrs. Obama ordered or fresh pan-roasted rockfish.

Joining Mrs. Obama were key White House staffers involved in "Let's Move:" White House chef Sam Kass, Senior Policy Adviser For Healthy Food Initiatives; First Lady chief of staff Tina Tchen; White House domestic policy director Melody Barnes and "Let's Move" director Robin Schepper.

With all of Mrs. Obama's emphasis on healthy eating and exercise--key cornerstones of "Let's Move," the White House Super Bowl "sports bar" menu raised some eyebrows because guests were served bratwurst, kielbasa, cheeseburgers and deep dish pizza--as well as salad.

Mrs. Obama is not a food purist--she has never called for people to cut out all junk food--just be careful not to make it the main part of a diet. She underscored her point while defending the Super Bowl menu.

"I mean, it is about balance. It's always about balance," Mrs. Obama said. "And I felt, as a mother, if somebody came and said, "You can never have a hot dog or serve your child a slice of pizza," we'd never get a handle on this issue, because I think that's sometimes how people feel -- that it's all or nothing -- "You can never go through a drive-through." And that's just not the case, and it's not realistic.

"I mean, so much of our lives are highlighted by foods that are traditions. The Super Bowl -- I mean, you're not going to have -- what, I don't even know what you have other than some hot dogs and some burgers for a Super Bowl party. That's what the Super Bowl is.

"So the message has always been about balance. And this is what I do in my household. As I tell my kids, if you eat your vegetables at every meal, then when you're out with your friends on a weekend and you have pizza and ice cream for the entire weekend, you'll still be okay.

"The problem is when that fun stuff becomes the habit. And I think that's what's happened in our culture. Fast food has become the everyday meal. And what pediatricians will tell you, that's causing some huge health issues. We flipped the script. As opposed to pizza being the treat, it is the thing that kids eat every day because sometimes that's all they'll eat."

Former Arkansas Gov. Sarah Palin-a potential GOP 2012 presidential candidate-criticized Mrs. Obama for asserting-incorrectly-that Mrs. Obama's anti-obesity campaign called for people to not eat dessert. Mrs. Obama was asked if she thought Palin was out of line.

"I don't think about her in this initiative because it's not really about... this initiative is about balance and giving parents the kind of advice and tips that they've been asking for."

Mrs. Obama was asked if she were concerned about shots taken at her by Rush Limbaugh and Glenn Beck. In her reply, she talked about Republicans who have supported her health crusade.

"We also have gotten great support from members of Congress from both sides of the aisle. This has been a bipartisan effort. (Former Arkansas Gov.) Mike Huckabee took the lead on this issue when he was the governor of Arkansas," Mrs. Obama said, mentioning another potential 2012 GOP contender-who hosted her on his FOX News show to discuss "Let's Move" last year. "I mean, he had one of the most forward-thinking programs out of any state on obesity because he lived it. Bill Frist is a physician," she said, a reference to the former Tennessee senator.

"The vast majority of people I think understand that this is a real issue. I mean, these statistics aren't made up. And people -- you can look within your own communities and see the changes that are going on. So I don't think that there's anyone who really questions whether this is a real issue."

Asked if she had a message for Palin or Limbaugh, Mrs. Obama shot back: "Let's move!"

Permalink | Email this | Linking Blogs | Comments

Obama Super Bowl Bash Has Pols, Jennifer Lopez, but First a Pre-game O'Reilly Interview

Filed under: Democrats, Humor, Obama Administration, The Daily FLOTUS with Lynn Sweet, Congress, Michelle Obama, Mayors, Barack Obama
President Obama and First Lady Michelle Obama are hosting a Super Bowl party for about 150 at the White House, with Jennifer Lopez and Marc Anthony among those on the guest list. But before kick-off on Sunday, the president is sitting down for a live interview with Fox News' Bill O'Reilly.

The First Couple's Super Bowl bash is expected to be the biggest of the three game-day parties the White House has put on since Obama took office. On Saturday too, a sporting event was on the agenda. Obama headed to Chevy, Chase, Md., a close-in Washington suburb, to watch his youngest daughter, Sasha, play in a basketball game at a community center.

O'Reilly, who conducts live interviews almost nightly on his top rated talk show the O'Reilly Factor, outlined the challenges he faces in interviewing a president -- and keeping him out of the so-called Spin Zone -- in a column he posted on his website.

"The chat is scheduled to last about 12 minutes and is fraught with danger. For me, not for the president. That's because the rules are different when it comes to interviewing the President of the United States. Since the beginning of our republic, only 44 men have held that office, and when a citizen is in the presence of the Chief Executive, there is strict protocol. For example, he is addressed as "Mr. President." No one says, "Yo, Barack, how you doin'?" There is a respect for the office that formalizes all conversation," O'Reilly wrote.

"...Back in September 2008, I interviewed then-Senator Obama on the campaign trail. There was no protocol involved, except for civility. I asked Mr. Obama a series of specific questions and interrupted him if he didn't answer them directly. I had 30 minutes of his time and made them count because I could say pretty much what I wanted to say.

"But that was then. On Sunday, I can ask the president valid questions, but he doesn't have to answer them. He can say what he wants. If I interrupt him too much, I look like a dope. And with only 12 minutes to work with, I have to frame my questions with precision. The president is an eloquent man; he can easily run out the clock if he wants to. Also, the interview is live, so there's no editing. In other words, there's nowhere to hide if things don't go well."

Now, back to the Super Bowl party.

Obama had said he would attend the Super Bowl if the Chicago Bears were playing, but a loss to Green Bay means he'll watch the Dallas match-up between the Packers and Pittsburgh Steelers from home on Pennsylvania Avenue.

A White House spokesman told me Lopez and her husband, Anthony, were invited because they are part of the NFL Miami Dolphins ownership group.

During the game the viewing groups will be spread through the State Dining Room, the East Room, other rooms on the White House second floor, and also in the theater, Politics Daily learned. Previous Obama Super Bowl parties have taken place mainly in the smallish theater, with about 40 seats.

And no, the guests won't be grouped based on the team they're rooting for. With a renewed Obama push for bipartisanship, I'm told "the whole point is to bring people together."

Other guests, according to a White House list provided to Politics Daily, include:

* Pennsylvania senators, Republican Pat Toomey and Democrat Bob Casey.
* Rep. Reid Ribble (R-Wis.) whose district includes Green Bay, and Lambeau Field, the capital of the Packer Nation.
* Milwaukee Mayor Tom Barrett, and Madison Mayor Dave Cieslewicz.
* Buffalo, N.Y. Mayor Byron Brown.
*Texas Democratic Reps. Rafael Anchia and Trey Martinez.
* Education Secretary Arne Duncan, Attorney General Eric Holder, U.S. Trade Representative Ron Kirk, Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood and Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano.

Permalink | Email this | Linking Blogs | Comments

Michelle Obama Shrugs Off Oscar De La Renta Jab: 'Women, Wear What You Love'

Filed under: Trade, The Daily FLOTUS with Lynn Sweet, Culture, Michelle Obama, White House, Barack Obama, China
First Lady Michelle Obama is shrugging off criticism from one of the biggest names in U.S. fashion, Oscar de la Renta, who questioned why she wore a dress by a British designer at the state dinner honoring Chinese President Hu Jintao.
Why do you wear European clothes?"
He added, "Some people did not get the point. It's not [intended] to be negative. Do you think Kate Middleton is going to be married in Marc Jacobs? Or you'd see Carla Bruni dressing in American clothes? This is a big industry in this country. Mrs. Obama does look great. She should take that and do something. She could do a great good for our industry. We need to create jobs here, create jobs on Seventh Avenue, too."
During an interview for ABC's "Good Morning America," broadcast Friday, co-host Robin Roberts asked Mrs. Obama about De la Renta's remarks.

"Women, wear what you love. That's all I can say. That's my motto. It's nice to have on a nice suit, but it's a lot nicer to change a generation in terms of their health. It's a lot...better use of my time to focus on rallying this country around our military families," Mrs. Obama said.

"I mean, there's so much that I hope to do in this role that makes a difference in people's lives."

Mrs. Obama brushed aside the criticism from De la Renta as if the focus on what she wore was fluff. But she loves clothes, sets a fashion agenda, and can create a market demand with what she wears. She has a "widespread reputation as one of the most stylish women ever to inhabit the White House," writes Kate Betts in "Everyday Icon, Michelle Obama and the Power of Style," to be published next month.

In Mrs. Obama's last big public appearance, last Tuesday's "State of the Union," she wore a dress by U.S. designer Rachel Roy.
FOOTNOTE: Buying U.S. goods is a policy initiative pushed by her husband's administration. Just last month the Transportation Department launched a "Buy America" website. A component of President Obama's signature economic stimulus legislation -- the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009 -- calls for purchasing U.S. products with stimulus funds.

Permalink | Email this | Linking Blogs | Comments

Michelle Obama to Appear on Oprah Winfrey Program Highlighting Military Families

Filed under: The Daily FLOTUS with Lynn Sweet
First Lady Michelle Obama makes a guest appearance on "The Oprah Winfrey Show" Friday, taping a program dealing with military families and capping off a busy week with a daytrip to Chicago.

Politics Daily was told by a White House source that Mrs. Obama will use the show, airing Jan. 27, to unveil a national campaign to help and honor military families. Aiding military families -- at a time when American soldiers are engaged in conflicts in Afghanistan and Iraq -- is already one of the top issues Mrs. Obama champions.

(Next Thursday, Mrs. Obama flies to Columbia, S.C., to visit Fort Jackson, where she will merge her other main issue -- obesity and fitness -- with the tough home situation many military families face when a loved one deploys.)

On the Winfrey show, Mrs. Obama will have a one-on-one segment with the host -- a friend, supporter and fundraiser for President Obama. The program will also feature NBC's Tom Brokaw and journalist/author Bob Woodward, who will also talk about the hardships facing soldiers and their families.

It's well known that Winfrey and the Obamas are close; they last saw each other last month when Winfrey was among those celebrated at the Kennedy Center Honors. Winfrey also was given entrée to the White House in 2009 to tape "Christmas at the White House: An Oprah Primetime Special." A few weeks after the Obamas moved into the White House in 2009, Winfrey made another visit there to interview the first lady for an O magazine cover story.
In 2009, Mrs. Obama was busy getting ready for the inauguration -- the Obama administration is two years old this week -- and celebrated her birthday on the inauguration train traveling from Philadelphia to Washington.
Earlier in the day Monday, the first family marked Martin Luther King Jr. Day by volunteering at the Stuart Hobson Middle School, where they helped a mentoring program organized by Greater DC Cares' Mentoring Matters Initiative.

There the president said, "This is just an outstanding program, an example of what Martin Luther King's birthday should be all about. I want to thank all the mentees and mentors who are participating.

"Dr. King obviously had a dream of justice and equality in our society, but he also had a dream of service, that you could be a drum major for service, that you could lead by giving back to our communities. And that's what this program is all about and that's what these participants are all about.
"Michelle and I and the girls are extraordinarily proud that each year on Martin Luther King's birthday, this is how we celebrate . . . making sure that we're giving a little something back to the community. And I hope that all the projects that are taking place all across the country on this day are getting similar attention, because this is part of what America is all about. And after a painful week where so many of us were focused on tragedy, it's good for us to remind ourselves what this country is all about. This kind of service project is what's best in us and we're thrilled with everybody who is participating."

Permalink | Email this | Linking Blogs | Comments

Michelle Obama's Advice to Parents in Wake of Tucson Shooting

Filed under: Obama Administration, The Daily FLOTUS with Lynn Sweet, Michelle Obama, Arizona Shooting

MICHELLE OBAMA'S LETTER:

Like so many Americans all across the country, Barack and I were shocked and heartbroken by the horrific act of violence committed in Arizona this past weekend. Yesterday, we had the chance to attend a memorial service and meet with some of the families of those who lost their lives, and both of us were deeply moved by their strength and resilience in the face of such unspeakable tragedy.

As parents, an event like this hits home especially hard. It makes our hearts ache for those who lost loved ones. It makes us want to hug our own families a little tighter. And it makes us think about what an event like this says about the world we live in - and the world in which our children will grow up.

In the days and weeks ahead, as we struggle with these issues ourselves, many of us will find that our children are struggling with them as well. The questions my daughters have asked are the same ones that many of your children will have - and they don't lend themselves to easy answers. But they will provide an opportunity for us as parents to teach some valuable lessons - about the character of our country, about the values we hold dear, and about finding hope at a time when it seems far away.

We can teach our children that here in America, we embrace each other, and support each other, in times of crisis. And we can help them do that in their own small way - whether it's by sending a letter, or saying a prayer, or just keeping the victims and their families in their thoughts.

We can teach them the value of tolerance - the practice of assuming the best, rather than the worst, about those around us. We can teach them to give others the benefit of the doubt, particularly those with whom they disagree.

We can also teach our children about the tremendous sacrifices made by the men and women who serve our country and by their families. We can explain to them that although we might not always agree with those who represent us, anyone who enters public life does so because they love their country and want to serve it.

Christina Green felt that call. She was just 9 years old when she lost her life. But she was at that store that day because she was passionate about serving others. She had just been elected to her school's student council, and she wanted to meet her congresswoman and learn more about politics and public life.

And that's something else we can do for our children - we can tell them about Christina and about how much she wanted to give back. We can tell them about John Roll, a judge with a reputation for fairness; about Dorothy Morris, a devoted wife to her husband, her high school sweetheart, to whom she'd been married for 55 years; about Phyllis Schneck, a great-grandmother who sewed aprons for church fundraisers; about Dorwan Stoddard, a retired construction worker who helped neighbors down on their luck; and about Gabe Zimmerman, who did community outreach for Congresswoman Giffords, working tirelessly to help folks who were struggling, and was engaged to be married next year. We can tell them about the brave men and women who risked their lives that day to save others. And we can work together to honor their legacy by following their example - by embracing our fellow citizens; by standing up for what we believe is right; and by doing our part, however we can, to serve our communities and our country.

Sincerely,

Michelle Obama

First Lady Michelle Obama is naming Tina Tchen her new chief of staff, picking a Chicago attorney already in the White House to replace Susan Sher.

Mrs. Obama said in a statement provided to Politics Daily, "I am thrilled to welcome Tina to my team."

Tchen and Sher will work together this month during a transition that will include a state dinner on Jan. 19 for Chinese President Hu Jintao. Sher, whose departure was announced last year, had long planned to move back to Chicago, where her husband, a Cook County Circuit Court judge, had remained.

Tchen will oversee Mrs. Obama's main agenda items, including marking the completion next month of the first year of her "Let's Move!" anti-childhood-obesity drive.

"What the East Wing does is very much shaped by her interests and passions as have been seen for the last two years, so I see most of myself as continuing to serve her and the administration and carrying that vision out," Tchen said in an interview Wednesday morning.

In appointing Tchen, Mrs. Obama did not stray far from a familiar circle. Tchen works for White House Senior Advisor Valerie Jarrett as the director of the Office of Public Engagement and as executive director of the White House Council on Women and Girls. Tchen will continue to run the council.

Tchen, Sher, Jarrett and Mrs. Obama all come out of an interlocking Chicago circle whose relationships go back years. Tchen said, "When you do Democratic politics, progressive politics in Chicago, it is not that big a community and you all get to know each other." She met Mrs. Obama sometime "in the early '80s, as we were doing that kind of work, political progressive grassroots work." Tchen was also a major fund-raiser for the 2008 Obama presidential campaign, ranked as a "superbundler" who raised more than $200,000.

Jarrett said in an interview on Wednesday Tchen brings more than a comfort factor to the post. She comes with "trust, confidence, knowing that Tina shares our philosophy about public service and why we are here and her enthusiasm and passion for the issues which Mrs. Obama cares deeply about and she will be a terrific bridge between the East and the West Wing."

Tchen becomes Mrs. Obama's third chief of staff and her appointment comes as part of a midterm personnel shuffle at the White House. White House Press Secretary Robert Gibbs announced Wednesday he is stepping down. And another Chicagoan, former Commerce Secretary William Daley, is in the running to be the new Obama White House chief of staff, as is interim chief of staff Peter Rouse.

In her statement about Tchen, Mrs. Obama further said, "I have admired her work with the White House Council on Women and Girls and her leadership with the Office of Public Engagement. Tina's tenure at the White House has focused on ensuring that communities across the country have a voice and a presence at the White House, and her office has worked closely with mine to develop many of our outreach efforts, so she was the natural choice for this role. We particularly share a commitment to nurturing young women and utilizing the White House as a platform for education and inclusion, and I look forward to continuing that work together.

"As sad as I am to see Susan go, I always knew she would return to her family and her community in Chicago. She arrived here in January of 2009 intending only to stay for a year and her extended tenure as my Chief of Staff has been a gift. She has led my team with an even hand and a clear vision and I am so grateful to her and her family for her time here in Washington.

"When selecting a replacement, I looked for someone who had the right experience to lead my team and am grateful to bring on Tina, whom I've known and respected for 20 years. Tina's success leading the Office of Public Engagement, reaching out to people across the country and encouraging Americans from all walks of life to feel connected to this White House, makes her uniquely qualified to step up to this position. I look forward to working with her in the years ahead to develop effective strategies for the Let's Move! campaign, to broaden our work on behalf of military families, to continue the arts and cultural events in the White House, and to advance our international agenda."

Tchen, 54, is a Chinese-American and mother of two children: Emma, 14, a student at a private school in Washington and Patrick, a student at the University of California, Los Angeles. She received her undergraduate degree at Radcliffe/Harvard and her law degree from Northwestern University. Before moving to Washington, Tchen was a partner at the Chicago office of Skadden, Arps, Meagher & Flom for 23 years.

Bruni-Sarkozy, the wife of French President Nicolas Sarkozy but a native of Italy, is a former model, singer and actress (she appears in an upcoming Woody Allen film). She is more outspoken than Mrs. Obama, but both share a love of fashion.

The two first ladies have met several times before. In September, there was a flap over whether Bruni-Sarkozy repeated an alleged private conversation she had with Mrs. Obama at the White House -- the upshot being that Mrs. Obama never said her life was "hell" in the White House, as some media outlets reported. (The French Embassy and Mrs. Obama's office both issued denials.) The two women get along well.

The first ladies will dine on the day Sarkozy's husband is meeting with President Obama at the White House. Nicolas Sarkozy takes office this year as the new president of the G20 and G8. The White House said that the Obama/Sarkozy meeting is to discuss the global economic recovery and job creation, as well as foreign policy.

First Lady Michelle Obama's 2010 included a clearly defined high (the launch of her "Let's Move" anti-childhood obesity campaign) and a notable low (her controversial vacation at an expensive resort in Spain). The year also marked her first solo international travel, to Haiti and Mexico, and having the very cool experience of Paul McCartney singing "Michelle" to her at a White House concert.

Here are Mrs. Obama's top 10 for 2010:

Kickoff of "Let's Move!"

On Feb. 2, Mrs. Obama formalized her healthy eating and exercise agenda into the "Let's Move!" campaign with an executive order from President Obama creating a Task Force on Childhood Obesity. The task force report, released on May 11, outlined potential paths to solving the childhood obesity crisis in a generation.

As part of "Let's Move," the first lady joined an administration-wide effort to pass the Healthy Hunger-Free Kids Act, signed into law by the president on Dec. 13, with Mrs. Obama by his side.

Though the first lady never testified before Congress or even visited Capitol Hill on the issue, she made calls behind the scenes and used her bully pulpit to raise the profile of the obesity problem and the need for legislation.

Through the year, she also made speeches before food manufacturers, the National Restaurant Association, school lunch administrators, and others, recommending voluntary improvements to cut calories and offer healthier choices. She also worked to revitalize a program of linking up chefs with local schools, bringing hundreds of toque-wearing chefs to the South Lawn.

Joked Obama at the bill signing, "Not only am I very proud of the bill, but had I not been able to get this passed, I would be sleeping on the couch."

Controversial Spain vacation

After avoiding any controversy since the 2008 presidential election, Mrs. Obama faced her first criticism as first lady after an August vacation with daughter Sasha at a lavish hotel on Spain's Mediterranean coast. Mrs. Obama was warned that the trip would likely cause a flap, but she went anyway. She decided to make the trip because she promised to spend time with a longtime Chicago friend who just lost her father. Before jetting back to Washington, the first lady had lunch with Spain's King Juan Carlos and Queen Sofia at their summer palace on the island of Majorca.

First solo foreign travel

In April, Mrs. Obama visited Haiti and Mexico, the first time she traveled on official business to a foreign country without the president.

In Haiti on April 13, she was joined by Second Lady Jill Biden for a five-hour tour of Port-au-Prince, devastated, along with much of the country, in the Jan. 12 earthquake. The women took a helicopter tour of the city and met with Haitian President Rene Preval and his wife, Elizabeth.

In a 40-hour visit to Mexico City, Mrs. Obama delivered a major speech about civic engagement to some 3,000 college and high school students at the Universidad Iberoamericana, met with some of Mexico's young leaders from around the county and spent time visiting with Mexico's first lady, Margarita Zavala.

Though the visit was billed as the launch of Mrs. Obama's international "youth engagement" agenda, she never made another solo foreign trip in 2010.

Return to the campaign trail

In October, after avoiding politics following the 2008 presidential campaign, Mrs. Obama returned to the campaign trail to help Democrats in the Nov. 2 contests. One of the most popular political figures in the nation, she appeared mainly before friendly crowds at fundraisers but did join Obama for a few rallies in key states and also called in to several radio talk shows to help get out the vote. To encourage early voting, Mrs. Obama did so herself at a site near the Obamas' South Side home while in Chicago to headline fundraisers for Illinois Democrats.

Fine dining high point

Mrs. Obama's East Wing organized two state dinners in 2010 for the leaders of Mexico and India, but the standout dining event she presided over was the United Nations spouses luncheon, according to Eddie Gehman Kohan, the editor of Obama Foodorama, the website of record for anything having to do with food and the Obama White House.

Mrs. Obama hosted 31 spouses of leaders at a "Farm to Table" four-course luncheon Sept. 24 at Barber's Blue Hill restaurant, located at the Stone Barns Center for Food and Agriculture, about 25 miles from New York City. At the lunch, Mrs. Obama "cast a global spotlight on the importance of children being educated in every step of the food chain, from growing through eating, as she simultaneously gave smaller, localized, sustainable agriculture practices the White House seal of approval," Kohan told Politics Daily.

A hit in India

Some of the most iconic images of Mrs. Obama over the past year came during her four-day trip to India with the president in November. At Mumbai University on Nov. 6, she kicked off her shoes and danced to a Bollywood hit tune. The next day, at the Holy Name School in Mumbai, she watched children perform folk dances and joined in herself, showing off her moves.

First Fox News interview as first lady

No surprise that Fox host Mike Huckabee, the former Arkansas governor and himself a weight-loss advocate, recently defended Mrs. Obama after Sarah Palin accused her of waging a war against desserts. In February, Mrs. Obama chose Huckabee's show to make her first appearance on Fox as first lady. The show was taped in Philadelphia and the two talked about food "deserts," areas that are not served by grocery stores.

First ship christening

In a July 23 christening ceremony, Mrs. Obama smashed a bottle of champagne across the bow of the Coast Guard cutter Stratton at the Northrop Grumman shipyard in Pascagoula, Miss. She became the first first lady to sponsor a Coast Guard cutter (this one was named for Capt. Dorothy Stratton, who led the Coast Guard Women's Reserves during World War II).
Said Mrs. Obama: "I have the honor of christening a U.S. Coast Guard cutter, the Stratton, named after . . . one of the finest women in uniform, and I'm very excited and honored to do that."

Finest fashion statement

Mrs. Obama loves clothes and dressing up, and her outfits are often stunning. At a Dec. 17 "Christmas in Washington" concert, she may have become the only first lady to wear a vintage dress -- a tea-length tulle skirt by the late designer Norman Norell, purchased at a vintage boutique in New York.

White House kitchen garden expansion

The White House kitchen garden continued to yield crops -- and inspiration for school and home gardeners and tons of positive press for Mrs. Obama in 2010, just as it did the year before. On March 31, the first lady welcomed school children to the South Lawn for the second spring planting, joined by Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack, Health and Human Services Secretary Kathleen Sebelius and Sam Kass, who then had the title assistant White House chef and food initiative coordinator. (In July Kass got an upgraded title, becoming the White House senior policy adviser for healthy food initiatives.)

The garden this year was expanded by two rows -- an additional 400 square feet -- bringing the total to 1,500 square feet. Ground for the original 1,100-square-foot garden on the west side of the South Lawn was cleared on March 20, 2009, with its initial planting the following month.

Speaking to students, Mrs. Obama said, "Everybody is talking about that garden, not just here in Washington, not just here in the United States, but all over the world. And we've been able to start thinking about things like getting kids to try new foods that they've never tried, vegetables that they've never had."

On Christmas Eve, Mrs. Obama helped kids track Santa Claus' travel around the world with the assistance of NORAD radar.

The Obama Family Christmas in Hawai
For years, the Obama family has traveled to Hawaii, Obama's native state, to celebrate Christmas and the New Year. The Obamas' are staying in a rented a house in Oahu about 12 miles from Honolulu. In years past, Obama would also use the trip to visit his grandmother, Madelyn Dunham and his half-sister Maya Soetoro-Ng and reconnect with school friends. Dunham died just before polls opened in the 2008 presidential election.

Chicago pal Eric Whitaker and his family are vacationing with the Obama's in Hawaii -- they were together last year -- and another Chicago friend, Marty Nesbitt and his family will be joining them. On Friday, Obama and daughters Malia and Sasha hung out at the Pyramid Rock Beach on a military base. On Thursday, the president played golf.

Mrs. Obama Tracking Santa

Since 1955, the North American Aerospace Defense (NORAD) Command in Colorado Springs, Col. has tracked the progress of Santa Claus as his eight (or nine, some years) reindeer fly around the world. The tracking started by accident; a newspaper Christmas ad misprint featured NORAD's number, prompting a youngster to call asking about Santa. NORAD has played along ever since.

For 40 minutes on Friday afternoon Hawaii time -- already dusk in parts of the U.S. -- Michelle Obama took calls coming into NORAD's Santa tracking line. The first lady talked to kids and traced the big man's whereabouts: when she started on the call Santa and his sleigh were in South Africa. And he was flying mighty fast because by the time she finished, he had flown over several African nations and was already moving above Italy, Slovakia and Austria.

Several times, Mrs. Obama, mindful of her healthy eating agenda, urged youngsters to not only put out cookies for Santa's reindeer, but veggies too. Talking to an eight-year-old girl, Juliana, Mrs. Obama said that her daughter Sasha, 9, is "bouncing off the walls. I know you are, too."

One caller, Sean, told Mrs. Obama he got an e-mail from Santa.

"You got an e-mail from Santa? Well, he's really moving up. He's pretty high-tech now," Mrs. Obama replied. "... The important thing to remember is that he doesn't come to your house until you're fast asleep, no matter where he is in the country. So you've got to make sure you get a good night's sleep. Leave out your cookies and some vegetables for the reindeer and you should be good to go."

In one exchange, a child named Austin asked Mrs Obama if being first lady was a hard job.

"You know, it is not as hard as being the president. My job is fun because I get to do stuff like this. I get to come to NORAD and look at the radar and help them track Santa. I get to work with kids like you guys and help make sure they're staying healthy. So it's a fun job. Thanks for asking," she replied.

Austin had another question. "Is it hard to have all that security around you?"

Said Mrs. Obama, "No, because the security -- the Secret Service, they're really professional and they're really nice guys. So they're fun. They're good with the girls... they do their jobs, but they're really nice guys. It's almost like they're family after a while. So it's not that hard having them around. And they're there to keep us safe, right? You can't be mad at that, right?"

Mrs. Obama asked Austin, "What else do you want to know?" And he said, "Is it hard to like be married to the president?"

Answered Mrs. Obama, "No, he's a pretty good guy. I mean, it's a tough job and sometimes you want to do everything you can to help him, but it's pretty easy being married to him. He's kind of funny -- fun to hang out with."

After that, Mrs. Obama gave Austin a Santa whereabouts report.

"All right. Hold on, let me look at the radar. Okay, it looks like -- all right, they've got a lock on a glowing object and they can confirm that it is in fact Santa's sleigh. It's over Africa right now -- Algeria, Africa. And they can see from here that it's pretty full of toys. Pretty full. So hopefully you've been good this year. But Santa is not going to come to your house until you go to sleep."

In a rare joint appearance in a Saturday video address taped at the White House, the Obamas urged support for the nation's military families. Helping soldiers families is one of Mrs.Obama's key agenda items.

"As first lady, I've had the honor to meet members of our military and their families on bases and in communities all across the country. I've gotten to know husbands and wives doing the parenting of two while their spouse is on another deployment... children trying their best in school but always wondering when mom or dad is coming home... patriots putting their lives on hold to help with a loved one's recovery... or carry on the memory of a fallen hero," she said. "When our men and women in uniform answer the call to serve, their families serve, too. And they're proud and glad to do it. But as long as that service keeps the rest of us safe, their sacrifice should also be our own. Even heroes can use a hand, especially during the holidays."

The president added, "So we're encouraging Americans to ask what you can do to support our troops and their families in this holiday season. For some ideas on how to get started, just visit Serve.gov."

First Lady Michelle Obama, daughters Sasha and Malia and family dog Bo will fly to Hawaii on Saturday for a winter vacation, Politics Daily has learned, while President Obama remains in Washington to deal with Congress.

In a pre-emptive move -- remembering the stinging criticism of her lavish vacation to Spain last summer -- the East Wing volunteered that Mrs. Obama will be flying to Hawaii in a military version of a business airplane -- not the jumbo jet that flew her to the Mediterranean coast in August.

The first family originally had been scheduled to head to Hawaii on Saturday; the Obamas for years have celebrated Christmas and New Years in the state where Obama was born.

"Given the uncertainty of the president's schedule, First Lady Michelle Obama and their daughters will be departing on Dec. 18 as originally scheduled to join their family in Hawaii for the holidays," Mrs. Obama's spokesman, Catherine McCormick Lelyveld, told Politics Daily.

"The first family and Bo will be traveling on a C40B, one of the smaller and most efficient planes available in the White House fleet for this trip. The president will join them when the congressional session is complete. The entire first family will return to Washington, D.C. Jan. 1, 2011."

President Obama is delaying his trip because Congress has yet to finish work -- or give up on taking action for now -- on a variety of issues as of Friday: the budget, the START Treaty with Russia, the DREAM Act and "Don't Ask, Don't Tell." Obama has a special urgency to get things done now, because when the 112th Congress is sworn in on Jan. 5, the GOP will be in control of the House and the Senate Democratic majority will be diminished.

Mrs. Obama took a summer vacation to Spain that was billed as a "private mother-daughter trip with longtime family friends" that included a stop at the summer palace of Their Majesties King Juan Carlos and Queen Sophia of Spain.

The Spain trip earned Mrs. Obama the harshest press of her tenure as first lady. The negative stories started as soon as she arrived in the Mediterranean coastal city of Marbella for a stay in the super-posh Villa Padierna, along with Sasha, her youngest daughter, and some friends. One of the enduring visuals of that trip was the picture of a big Air Force 757 parked at a Spanish airport. Many news outlets and blogs reported, inaccurately, about the size of Mrs. Obama's entourage, contributing to the bad press. But the East Wing declined at first to give out many facts about the trip. I set the record straight in an August Politics Daily column.
President Obama signed a nutrition bill on Monday with funding to improve food choices for children, a central element of First Lady Michelle Obama's anti-obesity crusade. Obama joked that getting Congress to pass it was a priority for him.

"Not only am I very proud of the bill, but had I not been able to get this passed, I would be sleeping on the couch," the president said as he introduced his wife at the bill signing event at a Washington, D.C., elementary school.

Mrs. Obama seemed to take the inference about their home life in stride, replying, "And all kidding aside, my husband worked very hard to make sure that this bill was a priority in this session, and I am grateful to you."

"Because I would have been sleeping on the couch," the president repeated.

Said Mrs. Obama, "But I am thrilled to be here -- we won't go into that. We'll just take -- don't have to go down that road. But I am thrilled to be here with all of you today as my husband signs the 'Healthy, Hunger-Free Kids Act' into law."

The first lady had urged passage of the legislation in more than 20 speeches over the past year.

The bill, which increases federal funding for school lunches for the first time in more than three decades, gives the secretary of agriculture the power to set standards for foods sold in schools, including those in vending machines. The legislation also combats child hunger by making more than 100,000 children on Medicaid eligible for free lunches.

Permalink | Email this | Linking Blogs | Comments

Child Nutrition Bill Backed by Michelle Obama Heads to President for Signing

Filed under: Education, The Daily FLOTUS with Lynn Sweet, Congress, Michelle Obama

The House on Thursday passed a child nutrition bill that contains elements crucial to First Lady Michelle Obama's "Let's Move!" anti-childhood obesity drive launched last February.

The measure passed 264-157 after President Obama and White House Chief of Staff Pete Rouse helped calm Congressional Black Caucus fears that the poor will get shortchanged because of curbs in future food stamp benefits to help pay for the bill.

The measure now heads to the president for signing.

Mrs. Obama said in a statement, "I am so thrilled that the House of Representatives has passed "The Healthy, Hunger-Free Kids Act" -- a groundbreaking piece of bipartisan legislation that will significantly improve the quality of meals that children receive at school and will play an integral role in our efforts to combat childhood obesity."

The first lady urged passage of the legislation in at least 20 speeches plus interviews. Mrs. Obama never traveled to Capitol Hill to rally support for the bill but I am told by a staffer the "first lady also spoke with key members of Congress at selected times about the status of the legislation and ways she could be supportive."

The major snag was over how to fund healthier school meals and related programs. The deal called for cuts in future food stamp benefits, which alarmed members of the Congressional Black Caucus. Rouse met with CBC members at a White House session to listen to their concerns, and President Obama dropped in for a quick visit. In the end, the White House pledged at some future time to deal with the food stamp issue.

In a Dec. 1 statement, Rep. Barbara Lee (D-Calif.), chairwoman of the Congressional Black Caucus, said the CBC would back the bill because "with poverty and childhood obesity on the rise, this legislation achieves the twin goals of expanding the pool of needy children who are eligible for school nutrition programs while establishing healthier meal guidelines for American schools."

She added, however, "It is unfortunate that in order to pass The Healthy, Hunger-Free Kids Act it comes at the expense of future Supplemental Assistance Nutrition Program funding. As more Americans slip into poverty and unemployment remains at painfully high levels, we should not have to choose between feeding poor children or their parents at a time that some in Congress argue for a $700 billion tax cut for the wealthiest Americans.

"We know that President Obama and the Congressional Black Caucus share the same concerns and have the same commitment to protect vital human needs programs, especially in these difficult economic times. President Obama has given us his guarantee that these cuts will be restored in the future and that he will reiterate his commitment to do so."

Christine Tobin, president of the American Diabetes Association, said in a statement, "This legislation represents a historic improvement in federal child nutrition programs at a time when our kids gravely need it. The investment in child nutrition this bill makes will help us combat both the childhood obesity and the diabetes epidemics."

President Obama and First Lady Michelle hosted a Hanukkah party on Thursday night and the volunteers who helped decorate the White House for Christmas -- there are 19 trees -- were feted on Wednesday.

"And I have to say the house looks more beautiful than it did last year. It is really something special," Mrs. Obama said at a Wednesday morning preview where the main audience was the children of military families.

An estimated 100,000 folks are expected to tour the decorated rooms during the holiday season. Some 12,000 will actually be guests at the 20 or so holiday parties and receptions the White House will host in December. For some reason the White House would not release the specific number of holiday festivities. As for the much coveted photo with the Obamas: some parties will feature a chance for one, some won't.

A White House Christmas

Planning for the 2010 White House Christmas started last Spring, with the theme this year, "Simple Gifts."

"In the end, that spirit of kindness and generosity is really what the holiday season is all about. And it was the idea behind this year's theme...because in the end, the greatest blessings of all are the ones that don't cost a thing -- the time that we spend with our loved ones, the freedoms we enjoy as Americans, and the joy we feel from reaching out to those in need," she said.

As for holiday decor, here's what's new at the White House:

-- In the aptly named Green Room, a tribute to the environment, with recycled magazines and newspapers turned into wreathes and trees. Notes the White House in a decoration guide: "This year to promote conservation, the majority of the holiday decorations that fill the White House were repurposed from past years."

-- In a corridor of the East Wing called Booksellers Row, greeting visitors is a double life size statue of Bo, the Obama family dog, made out of pipe cleaners by the White House flower shop.

-- There is a children's tree, with gingerbread ornaments made by military children, and what Mrs. Obama called "a very special Military Appreciation Tree in honor of our men and women in uniform who can't always spend the holiday season with the people they love the most."

The appreciation tree was created by Deborah Mullen, the wife of Admiral Mike Mullen, the chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff.

Old at the White House:

-- Following tradition, there is a gingerbread White House in the State Dining Room, this year weighing 350 pounds and taking more than four weeks to create. The Red Room is decorated with cranberries and scarlet magnolia wreathes.

-- The White House Hanukkah party on the second night of the holiday will feature entertainment by saxophonist Joshua Redman and, of course, a menorah lighting. The White House kitchen -- as is customary in events targeted to Jewish invitees -- will be koshered under the supervision of a rabbi.

-- There will be two parties for the press, one for members of Congress, another for White House staff and Secret Service personnel, and seven receptions for a category called "Americans from across the country." A party for close Obama friends and family is Dec. 11. I'm not sure if these are separate parties but the White House tells me the president and first lady "believe it's a priority to include others like: community based leaders from across the country; military families, wounded warriors and veterans communities; faith leaders, business and civic leaders and grassroots constituency leaders and members."

Schake, 40, a strategist for California first lady Maria Shriver, fills a spot that has been vacant since the end of August, when Mrs. Obama's first communications chief, Camille Johnston, left for a corporate position. Schake is a co-founder of Griffin|Schake, a Los Angeles public affairs and strategic communications firm. Schake has worked in California on obesity issues, Mrs. Obama's signature policy initiative.

"Kristina has done extensive work throughout her career on child nutrition and community health issues, and that paired with her experience as part of a military family will bring invaluable insight to our work on childhood obesity and our efforts to support military families," Mrs. Obama said in a statement. "I look forward to working with Kristina on these efforts and more in the months and years ahead."

The first lady was in Miami on Monday on her "Let's Move!" initiative to stem childhood obesity. She announced a new public-private partnership to get schools to offer salad bars in student cafeterias.

In moving to Washington, Schake, a Democrat, becomes part of a political odd couple. Her sister, Kori, is a veteran of George W. Bush's administration and the McCain-Palin campaign. Kori Schake was director of defense strategy and requirements on the National Security Council between 2002 and 2005 and was deputy director of policy planning in the Bush State Department in 2007 and 2008. She was a defense and foreign policy adviser for the McCain-Palin presidential bid in 2008.

Kristina Schake is an expert "on the issues Mrs. Obama is trying to make a mark on," Kori Schake told Politics Daily. She predicted her sister would become a "senior gay rights advocate in the White House" and would add "a businesswoman's perspective" on the issues because "she is from way outside of Washington."

Kori Schake, a Republican, quipped that she was "worried for the first time that the president may be re-elected now that they have Kristina Schake on the team."

Kristina Schake brings to the East Wing a resume packed with work on children's and health issues and big-time event marketing and planning experience, including Shriver's annual women's conference. Mrs. Obama was the keynote speaker for Shriver's conference last October, talking about the challenges facing military spouses. Schake also was global communications director for the Live Earth concert series in 2007.

For the past two years, Mrs. Obama has maintained high popularity ratings, in part, by very careful image management -- she speaks out on only a few issues -- and selective media marketing to friendly print, broadcast and Web outlets about these issues. Mrs. Obama proved a hit on the 2010 campaign trail, although her appearances were limited to friendly audiences.

In two years, Mrs. Obama has held only three sessions with the print reporters who cover the East Wing beat: on Chicago's 2009 Olympic bid, on her first year in the White House and on her April trip to Mexico City. Her only serious public relations misstep was a posh summer vacation a few months ago in Spain.

Schake comes to the East Wing after a federal judge ruled in favor of the challenge on California's gay marriage ban -- a legal bid to overturn what is known as Proposition 8 -- mounted by an organization she helped create, the American Foundation for Equal Rights. She resigned from the board to join the Obama White House. The group recruited a legal odd couple -- lawyers Ted Olson and David Boies -- for the landmark case, now on appeal, and potentially headed to the Supreme Court.

Rob Stutzman, former communications director for Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger and most recently an adviser to the Meg Whitman campaign, told Politics Daily that Schake "is an extremely bright and experienced counselor. The first lady will be very well served by this choice."

First Lady Michelle Obama is hunting for her third chief of staff following the announcement Tuesday that Susan Sher, her longtime friend, will leave the job after the first of the year.

"Susan has been both a colleague and a dear friend for decades, and I have been grateful every day for her leadership and wise counsel in Washington," Mrs. Obama said in a statement.

"I also very much appreciate her generosity in staying longer than she initially planned -- spending so many months away from her family in Chicago -- to help me build my office in the East Wing. I wish her all the best."

President Obama said in a statement, "Susan has brought tremendous skill and dedication to the First Lady's office, as well as my Administration's outreach to the Jewish Community and our efforts to pass health care reform, and I thank her for her service."

Sher joined the Obama administration at the beginning, signing on as a White House associate counsel with several portfolios: providing legal advice for Mrs. Obama on issues relating to health care policy as well as serving as administration liaison to the Jewish community.

Sher moved over to the East Wing in June, 2009 to replace Jackie Norris, who was Mrs. Obama's first chief of staff. The switch was seen as Mrs. Obama wanting as her chief someone she had worked with for a long time and who could be a West Wing player along with the other Chicagoans in the White House, such as senior advisers Valerie Jarrett, David Axelrod and former White House Chief of Staff Rahm Emanuel, who left in October to run for mayor of Chicago.

Sher had been telling friends she wanted to return to Chicago where her husband, Neil Cohen, is a Cook County Circuit Court judge.

In addition to the chief of staff job, Mrs. Obama also has to replace her former top spokesman, Camille Johnston, who resigned last August. Mrs. Obama's first social secretary, Desiree Rogers, quit earlier this year and was replaced by Julianna Smoot.

Sher, Jarrett and Rogers all came to Washington together and rented apartments in the same Georgetown building. Sher and Jarrett have long been professional and personal friends, dating back to when they both worked in Chicago's City Hall.

One day Sher passed on to Jarrett the resume of a promising young lawyer who was tired of corporate life and wanted a change -- one Michelle Robinson, engaged at the time to Barack Obama.

Sher and Mrs. Obama also worked together at the University of Chicago Medical Center, where Sher was vice president for legal and governmental affairs and general counsel before joining the Obama administration.

Permalink | Email this | Linking Blogs | Comments
