July Becomes Deadliest Month for Iraqis Since '08

BAGHDAD (Aug. 1) -- July was Iraq's deadliest month in more than two years, according to new official figures, suggesting that a resilient insurgency is successfully taking advantage of the months of deadlock in forming a new government. The figures released late Saturday show that 535 people were killed last month, the highest since May 2008 when 563 died, heightening concerns over Iraq's precarious security situation even as the U.S. troops are reducing their numbers. The U.S. military vehemently rejected the casualty numbers Sunday afternoon, however, countering that its own data showed ...

Alaskan Republicans Ask for Begich's Resignation

Alaskan Republicans Ask for Begich's Resignation

Now that federal prosecutors have abandoned their ethics case against embattled Sen. Ted Stevens, R-Alaska, the state's leading Republicans have asked Stevens' successor, Democratic Sen. Mark Begich, to defend his seat in a special election. The latest round of Alaskan political boondoggling began earlier this week when the state's GOP chair, Randy Ruedrich, publicly attributed Begich's close, 3,700-vote victory over Stevens last November to "a few thousand Alaskans [who] thought that Senator Stevens was guilty of seven felonies." Gov. Sarah Palin then echoed that assertion in a separate ...

Minnesota Update: Still Thinking about Counting Votes

Current status from TwinCities.com: Absentee ballots at issue that may be counted are about 3500. Franken still has a 225 vote lead. 1,000 votes that Coleman agreed to count on Jan 3, Coleman now wants to reconsider and remove them from the vote. Coleman's attorneys want to review the legal status of all 290k votes in light of last Friday's rulings narrowing the types of absentee ballots it would accept for counting. One hitch: It would be impossible as those previously counted absentee ballots have long ago had the envelopes removed. Thus the maneuver is likely to highlight the fundamental ...

Gun Control Case To Watch

Gun Control Case To Watch

The New York Times has a story out this morning about the impending decision of the US Supreme Court on whether to take up the case of the DC Gun Ban and the 2nd amendment. This whole area is fraught with peril for politicians. If the SC takes the case, the decision will be handed down in June, just in time to bring the 2nd amendment to the top of the issues list in what will then be a white hot political campaign. The decision could go three ways... ...
