LeBron More Prince Than King

By  Terence Moore - AOL News
LeBron More Prince Than King

Somebody lied. Then again, to paraphrase Joe Torre, what can you expect from the NBA's version of A-Fraud? Just call him L-Bogus. For seven years, LeBron James told us we were all Witnesses to The King, The Chosen One, the person to lead the Cleveland Cavaliers to the enchanted land of world championships. Instead, James abdicated his throne in a cowardly way (just ask Cavaliers owner Dan Gilbert) to join his supposedly magic kingdom of South Beach -- with a heavy emphasis on "supposedly." Before we continue, I haven't a problem with James bolting Cleveland, and not only because of the ...

Shocking News Stories of 2009

Shocking News Stories of 2009

(Dec. 30) -- In the process of sifting through 12 months' worth of news to assemble year-end lists, certain stories stand out. They were not the most important ones of 2009. The events directly affected only a small number of people. But an inordinately large number of readers clicked on these headlines, even as many sent feedback demanding more uplifting stories (which we happily provide on Good News Now.) These were among the year's worst news stories. They made us gasp and wonder whether reports so horrible could be true. The only consolation in reviewing these shocking stories is that they ...

In Many Ways, 2009 Was the Year of Palin

In Many Ways, 2009 Was the Year of Palin

(Dec. 29) -- The president is always under a microscope, so it's natural that he dominates the news throughout the year. That's especially true for the first year of a young president who was swept into office on the promise of change. But if anyone rivaled President Barack Obama this year when it came to making headlines and consistently eliciting strong reactions from all sides, it was the woman who hoped to be vice president. In many ways, 2009 was the Year of Sarah Palin. Hardly a day went by when Palin wasn't getting some kind of attention – for better or worse – on TV, ...

2009's Top 10 Scandals

2009's Top 10 Scandals

(Dec. 28) -- Corrupt politicians, cheaters, hypocrites, creeps, con artists and publicity hounds. That reads like any other year's roster of people behaving badly. A beauty pageant, a state dinner, the Appalachian Trail, a golf club, a funny-looking balloon -- plus a bunch of kids. All of that sounds downright wholesome. Mix them together, stir in too much reality TV and a couple of sex tapes, and you get the uniquely spicy concoction that is the 2009 edition of the year's biggest scandals. ...

Dumbest Criminal Suspects of 2009

Dumbest Criminal Suspects of 2009

It seemed like a good idea at the time. That's a common theme running through so many tales of crooked capers gone ridiculously wrong. This year's top 10 stories are no exception. The people in this rogues' gallery all had a plan, police say. But there was always a fatal flaw in their scheme that they somehow overlooked. Some, following in the tradition of the legendary "duct tape bandit," aspired to be masters of disguise – but fell laughably short. Others were tripped up by bad luck, forgetfulness or simple hunger for one last burrito before jail. Take a look back at 2009's ...

Photos of the Year

By  Steve Pendlebury - AOL News
Photos of the Year

The news comes to us every day, all day long, in a torrent of words. Countless words on computer screens. More words on printed pages. Words heard on radio and TV. So many words that they all start to run together in the course of a year and news stories end up muddled in our memories. Yet a single photograph has the power to remind us – in a way that a year's worth of words cannot – why certain stories mattered. Look at those people standing on the wings of a ditched airliner as it floats in a frigid river. They appear almost nonchalant as they wait to be rescued. "The Miracle ...

Sarah Palin's 'Death Panels' Wins Politifact 'Lie of the Year'

By  David Sessions - Politics Daily
Sarah Palin's 'Death Panels' Wins Politifact 'Lie of the Year'

Politifact.com, a fact-checking Web site owned by the St. Petersburg Times, has selected its No. 1 political falsehood of the year: Sarah Palin's assertion that the Democratic health care bill would create "death panels" -- government bodies with authority to decide whether individual citizens should receive medical treatment. The site said that 61 percent of its readers also voted Palin's "death panel" remark as the No. 1 political lie of the year. The remark was one of Palin's first political statements after she announced she would resign as governor of Alaska on July 3, and catapulted the ...

11 Things: This Week's Big List of Lists

(Dec. 11) -- Perhaps you've noticed as you cruise around the Internet that lists are a) overused gimmicks b) still incredibly popular. Put together a "Top 10" or "5 Best" and, it seems, people can't resist clicking on it. And with 2010 just a few weeks away, everyone is taking a look back and making lists that say something about the past year and decade. Here's a seasonal selection from the buffet of list-o-mania that's online this week. 7 Stories Barack Obama Doesn't Want Told Politico tells them. No. 2: Too much Leonard Nimoy. Huh? Click and understand the logic. Barbara Walters' 10 Most ...

$1 Billion Spent on Political Ads in '09

By  Christopher Weber - Politics Daily
$1 Billion Spent on Political Ads in '09

A media analysis firm finds about $1 billion has been spent on political advertising so far this year, with most of that money going towards -- you guessed it -- the health care reform debate. TNS Media Intelligence says because 2009 is an off year for elections, that $1 billion figure isn't even close to the record $3.4 billion spent on ads during 2006, Talking Points Memo reported. Two-thirds of the money spent this year was doled out by issue advocacy groups. While most of it went for television commercials, mostly on local cable, a larger chunk than ever was spent on Internet ads. But ...

50-Foot Waves Heading for Hawaii

By  David Knowles - AOL News
50-Foot Waves Heading for Hawaii

(Dec. 7) -- Surf's up. Way up. A huge storm in the northern Pacific Ocean is sending monster waves toward the Hawaiian Islands. As a result, big-wave surfers from around the globe are flocking to Waimea Bay on Oahu for what is setting up to be a day of surfing nirvana. For the first time since 2004, the surf is massive enough to hold the Eddie Aikau memorial big wave surfing tournament. The Honolulu Star-Bulletin reported that following a day of 30- to 40-foot choppy waves on Monday, cleaner, bigger waves with faces as high as 50 feet will begin cresting on Tuesday. Conditions like this ...
