Tea Party Group Releases Congress Members' Cell Phone Numbers

Some newly elected Republicans may have overflowing in-boxes and many voice mails this week, after a tea party group released the personal e-mail addresses and cell phone numbers of freshman members of Congress. The leader of the Tea Party Patriots sent an e-mail with the private information to supporters, urging them to contact the GOP Congress members to make sure they stay on the tea party course and avoid being being "co-opted" by Washington insiders, Roll Call reported Friday. Jenny Beth Martin accused the Claremont Institute, a conservative think tank, of purposefully scheduling ...

Republicans' Midterm Wave Didn't Drown Colorado Democrats

Republicans' Midterm Wave Didn't Drown Colorado Democrats

One week after the Republican wave, GOP fingers are still pointing in Colorado, where the party saw mixed results in the 2010 midterm elections. There was good news for Colorado Republicans, for sure. GOP candidates defeated two Democratic House members, Rep. Betsy Markey in the 4th Congressional District and Rep. John Salazar in the 3rd CD. Republicans also took a narrow majority in the state House, winning it back from Democrats. They defeated incumbent Democrats in the state treasurer and secretary of state's office. And their gubernatorial candidate, Dan Maes, managed to poll 11 percent, ...

'Real World' Star Sean Duffy Elected to Congress in Wisconsin

Another Election Night first: a reality television star has been elected to Congress. Sean Duffy, a member of the 1997 cast of MTV's "Real World: Boston," defeated state Sen. Julie Lassa to win a seat in Wisconsin's 7th Congressional District. With 99 percent of precincts reporting, Duffy, a Republican, had 52 percent of the vote, The Associated Press reported. The former Ashland County district attorney replaces the retiring Rep. David Obey, a Democrat who served in the House for 41 years. In a statement, Duffy said he knows there's a lot of work to do and he's excited to join "a new ...

The Democratic Debacle -- and What It Means

The Democratic Debacle -- and What It Means

America has seen tidal wave off-year elections before (three, in fact, in the past 16 years). But what was epic about the glub-glub election of 2010 is that even with months of warning most imperiled Democrats could not find high enough ground. In the House, Republicans gained a minimum of 60 seats, dethroning Nancy Pelosi as House speaker, probably making this the GOP's biggest off-year triumph since (gulp!) 1938 once all the votes are counted. The Democrats clung to a narrow Senate majority, holding a minimum of 51 seats (counting independents Joe Lieberman and Bernie Sanders) with two ...

Republican Raul Labrador Upsets Blue Dog Walt Minnick in Idaho

BOISE, Idaho -- In an upset win in one of the most unusual House races in the country, underdog Republican Raul Labrador has won Idaho's 1st congressional district over the favored incumbent, Blue Dog Democrat Rep. Walt Minnick. At 12:55 a.m., Minnick conceded on Twitter. The Associated Press in Boise called the race for Labrador minutes later. In a statement Wednesday, Minnick said he phoned Labrador and "wished him every success... I, in particular hope he can be successful in working with the administration and his colleagues of both parties in the exceedingly important task ahead of ...

Republicans Sweep the House

Republicans Sweep the House

Two years after the historic election of Barack Obama, Republicans rebounded Tuesday night and gained control of the House of Representatives with a dominant showing in the 2010 midterm elections. A lethal combination of voter anxiety, a still-weak economy, anger at the president's health care reform bill and a surging tea party movement combined to sweep the Democrats out of power just four years after they had taken control of the chamber. Republicans needed to win 39 of the Democrats' 255 seats to take back the House, and by Wednesday morning they had won at least 60, with most coming in ...

Republican Robert Hurt Defeats Tom Perriello in Virginia's 5th District

In Virginia's 5th Congressional District, incumbent freshman Democrat Tom Perriello, elected in 2008 as part of the Barack Obama wave, was defeated by Virginia state Sen. Robert Hurt whose campaign slogan was "A Proven Conservative with Virginia Values." This district was one of the most hotly contested and closely watched House races in the nation, featuring a last minute campaign visit by President Obama. Hurt, who served three terms in the Virginia House before being elected to the state Senate in 2006, stressed Perriello's support of the Obama agenda throughout the campaign. From the ...

GOP Wave of Change Hits House; Republicans Also Gain Governorships

GOP Wave of Change Hits House; Republicans Also Gain Governorships

Republicans catapulted back into relevance and power Tuesday, taking majority control of the House and winning governorships all over the country. Democrats fell in dozens of House races as voters registered their unhappiness with the recession-wracked economy and the direction of the country. In a pendulum swing of historic proportions, Republicans picked up at least nine governorships in states now led by Democrats, including many that will be key to the 2012 presidential election, and held on to Florida. They also took Democratic Senate seats in Pennsylvania, Indiana, Arkansas, Wisconsin, ...

10 House Races That Hold the Cards for Democrats

10 House Races That Hold the Cards for Democrats

The outlook for Democrats on Election Day has gotten so bad that estimates of the mayhem require metaphors only Mother Nature can supply. Will it be a wave or a tsunami? An early winter storm or a Category Five hurricane? On Tuesday night, electoral math will decide which party controls each chamber. Republicans will need a net total of 39 pick-ups to take back control of the House and install John Boehner as speaker. But the numbers will only tell part of the story for the next Congress. The rest will be revealed by the following four trends, personified by 10 races, that will determine ...

A Campaign Season of Gaffes and Gotchas

WASHINGTON (Oct. 29) -- Memo to novice political candidates: Know thy Constitution. Don't tell Hispanics they look Asian. Pay special attention to what you say when you are in front of cameras. Which you almost always are. Expect your chitchat to go viral. And, really, try your best to stay out of court. Now relax. Be yourself -- if you dare. This is the year of the neophyte in politics. Anti-incumbent sentiment in general and the tea party in particular have brought fresh faces forward, many wet behind the ears in the brutalities of a modern campaign. The result: a rash of impolitic ...
