Republicans' Midterm Wave Didn't Drown Colorado Democrats

Republicans' Midterm Wave Didn't Drown Colorado Democrats

One week after the Republican wave, GOP fingers are still pointing in Colorado, where the party saw mixed results in the 2010 midterm elections. There was good news for Colorado Republicans, for sure. GOP candidates defeated two Democratic House members, Rep. Betsy Markey in the 4th Congressional District and Rep. John Salazar in the 3rd CD. Republicans also took a narrow majority in the state House, winning it back from Democrats. They defeated incumbent Democrats in the state treasurer and secretary of state's office. And their gubernatorial candidate, Dan Maes, managed to poll 11 percent, ...

Minnesota Governor's Race Could Be Heading for Recount

Minnesota Governor's Race Could Be Heading for Recount

Six days after the election, no winner has been declared in the race for governor of Minnesota, even though the Democratic candidate, Mark Dayton, was leading his Republican opponent, Tom Emmer, by 8,751 votes on Monday. Under Minnesota law, an automatic recount must be conducted at public expense if the margin of victory is less than a half of one percentage point, or in this case about 10,500 votes, according to The Associated Press. But a trailing candidate can choose to waive the recount. About 2.1 million ballots were cast in the election. Emmer's attorney, Tony Trimble, was asked ...

GOP's Tom Foley Concedes Connecticut Governor's Race to Dan Malloy

GOP's Tom Foley Concedes Connecticut Governor's Race to Dan Malloy

Republican Tom Foley on Monday conceded the close race for the Connecticut governor's seat to Democrat Dan Malloy after he and his advisers concluded they could not make up the almost 6,000 votes that separated them. The Connecticut vote, and determining the winner in its aftermath, had been plagued by confusion. On Election Day itself, polling stations in Bridgeport had run out of ballots before the 8 p.m. closing time and a judge ordered a dozen sites to remain open until 10 p.m. On the day after the election, Secretary of State Susan Bysiewicz, a Democrat, declared Malloy the winner based ...

Republican Bill Brady Concedes to Democratic Illinois Gov. Pat Quinn

Republican Bill Brady Concedes to Democratic Illinois Gov. Pat Quinn

GOP Illinois governor candidate Bill Brady on Friday conceded to Democratic Gov. Pat Quinn, agreeing that his 19,000-plus vote lead made him the winner. Though the Associated Press called the Illinois governor's race on Thursday, Brady and his team held out hope that uncounted military, absentee and overseas ballots would add up to a victory. On Friday, the Chicago Sun-Times reported, Brady threw in the towel. "Gov. Quinn won this race. He worked hard for it," Brady told reporters at a Bloomington hotel in central Illinois. Brady said he called Quinn. "I congratulated him on his ...

Associated Press: Democrat Pat Quinn Wins Illinois Governor's Race

Associated Press: Democrat Pat Quinn Wins Illinois Governor's Race

Democratic Illinois Gov. Pat Quinn, ahead of GOP rival Bill Brady on Thursday by 19,400 votes, said his lead is "insurmountable" with 100 percent of all precincts reporting. An analysis by the Associated Press concluded that uncounted overseas, military and absentee ballots were not enough for Brady to overcome Quinn's lead. Tuesday's election ended in a cliffhanger. Election authorities have not yet declared Quinn the winner. Brady has declined to concede as of Thursday afternoon. Quinn's election would be the major bright spot for Illinois Democrats, who lost President Obama's Senate ...

Self-Financed Candidates Spent Millions, but Most Fared Poorly

Self-Financed Candidates Spent Millions, but Most Fared Poorly

How's this for a top-10 list, Dave: The top 10 congressional candidates who spent millions of dollars of their own money on campaigns and still lost on Tuesday? Well, all right, two on the big-spender list -- a Senate candidate in Wisconsin and a House hopeful in Virginia -- were elected. But eight others, ranging from former wrestling mogul Linda McMahon (a Republican who poured $46.6 million into her Connecticut Senate match) to Democrat Susan DelBene (who dropped $2.3 million on a Washington House contest), spent their dough in vain, the Washington Post reports. The most generous with ...

Sarah Palin's Midterm Scorecard: A Winning Record, but Some Key Losses

Sarah Palin's Midterm Scorecard: A Winning Record, but Some Key Losses

Sarah Palin came out a big winner in terms of raw numbers Tuesday, but saw four of her key endorsees take prominent losses in the midterm elections. The former Alaska governor and 2008 Republican vice presidential nominee offered her star power -- and the occasional campaign contribution or robocall -- to more than 100 conservative candidates during the primary and general elections. A Politics Daily tally puts Palin's Tuesday successes at 62 wins, 23 losses and seven contests that are still too close to call, with Palin's candidates trailing in five of those races. That's a 70 percent win ...

Oregon Democrat Wins Historic Third Term as Governor

PORTLAND, Ore. (Nov. 3) -- Oregon Democrat John Kitzhaber has scored a historic third term as governor, seven years after his previous stint in office. Kitzhaber fought off a challenge from Republican Chris Dudley, a former NBA player and political rookie, with the outcome too close to call until Wednesday evening. The candidates spent a combined $15 million on the race to replace Democratic Gov. Ted Kulongoski, who is leaving office after the two straight terms allowed by Oregon law. Kitzhaber, who was buoyed by a last-minute visit from President Barack Obama, will face a state budget ...

Who Won the Connecticut Governor's Race? Stay Tuned

And the next governor of Connecticut is... Stay tuned. Connecticut Secretary of State Susan Bysiewicz is expected to release the final, official vote Thursday afternoon. Late Wednesday, the Associated Press announced it was recalling its official call in the race. "The wire service said after reviewing its own count it has Republican Tom Foley up 8,424 votes over Democrat [Dan] Malloy, with all but 1.5 percent of the precincts counted," CBS New York.com reported. But earlier Wednesday Connecticut's top election official said it appeared Malloy had squeezed past Foley to become the state's ...

The Democratic Debacle -- and What It Means

By  Walter Shapiro - Politics Daily
The Democratic Debacle -- and What It Means

America has seen tidal wave off-year elections before (three, in fact, in the past 16 years). But what was epic about the glub-glub election of 2010 is that even with months of warning most imperiled Democrats could not find high enough ground. In the House, Republicans gained a minimum of 60 seats, dethroning Nancy Pelosi as House speaker, probably making this the GOP's biggest off-year triumph since (gulp!) 1938 once all the votes are counted. The Democrats clung to a narrow Senate majority, holding a minimum of 51 seats (counting independents Joe Lieberman and Bernie Sanders) with two ...
