Click here to visit the new home of Politics Daily! While some conservatives have stirred suspicion among their constituents about filling out the 2010 census form, Karl Rove is urging everyone to stand up and be counted. In a 30-second ad, the former adviser to George W. Bush talks about James Madison, one of his "favorite founders" and the man who wrote the census requirement into the Constitution. "He created an instrument of democracy by writing into the Constitution a requirement for a census every 10 years to ensure fair representation in Congress," Rove says. "Please answer the 10 easy questions -- they're almost the same ones Madison ...
Today is Census Day, the 23rd in the history of the United States. That means that the Census Bureau wants a snapshot of where everybody is on April 1. President Obama already filled out his form. White House photographer Pete Souza snapped Obama working on the questionnaire on March 29 in the Oval Office. The White House released the photo on Thursday morning. Not only has the president been counted, but he included his mother-in-law, Marian Robinson, who lives with the First Family at the White House. (The form asks, "How many people were living or staying in this house, apartment or ...
(March 16) -- Despite months of skepticism from conservative politicians and pundits, at least as many Republicans as Democrats now say they are certain to participate in the 2010 census, a new poll finds. According to a Pew Research Center poll conducted March 10-14, 74 percent of Republicans surveyed said they "definitely will" participate in the census. That number is up 20 percentage points from when Pew asked the same question the week of Jan. 6-10. The strong showing of support for the census among Republicans comes after months of criticism from conservative figures. Ross D. ...
(Feb. 3) -- Football analysts will spend this week crunching numbers to predict whether the Saints or the Colts will win Super Bowl XLIV. The U.S. Census Bureau has some stats of its own about New Orleans and Indianapolis. Although they don't offer any insights about the outcome of Sunday's championship game, they do show the rival cities are closely matched in some areas -- demographically speaking. NOORVIK, Alaska (Jan. 25) – Clifton Jackson was waiting when the stranger from "outside" knocked on his door. "Hello," said Census Bureau Director Robert Groves as he greeted the retired commercial fisherman and sled dog trainer at his modest tin-roofed house. "I've got snow on my shoes," he said as he disappeared inside. Eleven minutes later, Groves emerged. "Done. No. 1. Only 309 million to go," he told reporters waiting in the relatively balmy 12-degree cold. "It's all downhill from here." ...
(Jan. 6) -- As the government prepares to roll out the 2010 Census on March 15, one of the 10 questions on the form already has people cringing. Question 9 asks respondents to designate their race and gives them the option of choosing "Negro," a term many have considered derogatory and antiquated for years. The question asks "What is person 1's race?" Of the 15 possible options, one is "Black, African Am., or Negro." The Office of Management and Budget sets racial definitions for the Census Bureau and all federal statistical reporting. In its standards, it says a "Black or African American" ...
WASHINGTON (Jan. 4) -- The U.S. government thinks you count and is willing to spend an awful lot of money to convince skeptics. The Census Bureau today kicked off its 2010 Portrait of America Road Tour as part of a $340 million publicity blitz to increase awareness and allay suspicions about the once-in-a-decade population count. The unprecedented push was launched in New York City's Times Square, where a 46-foot trailer began a four-month, nationwide journey to extol the positive benefits of filling out the 10-question census form. A dozen other regional vans also will fan out to spread ...
WASHINGTON (Jan. 4) -- The Census Bureau kicks off its $300 million campaign Monday to prod, coax and cajole the nation's more than 300 million residents to fill out their once-a-decade census forms. The bureau will mail out the 10-question forms to about 120 million households in March. On Monday, Census Director Robert Groves starts the nationwide campaign with an event in New York City where he is scheduled to unveil a 46-foot trailer called "Mail It Back." In all, 13 vehicles are to be present at about 800 events around the country, from small community happenings to the Super Bowl and ...
Civilrights.org NALEO's poster has become a theological bone of contention. (Dec. 15) -- A poster meant to encourage Latinos to participate in the 2010 Census is turning into a theological bone of contention, reported USA Today. The poster, which depicts Joseph and a pregnant Mary arriving in Bethlehem more than two millennia ago, has been called "blasphemous" by one Latino cleric. The connection between the Census and the birth of Jesus may need a word of explanation. According to the Gospel of Luke, USA Today said, Joseph had returned to Bethlehem to be counted in the Roman census. Since ...
The Bob Edwards' Show broadcast a segment on this article for its November 1st program. The article originally ran on October 22......Whether the 2010 census should have 10 questions on it, as it's currently written, or 11, as Sens. Robert Bennett (R-Utah) and David Vitter (R-La.) suggest, seems a simple enough issue. Even though 100 million forms have already been printed, the census director recently told a Senate panel that reprinting the forms would cost about $22 million, not exactly a princely sum in Washington these days. Although supporting materials and training manuals would also ...
