JACKSON, Miss. -- Mississippi Gov. Haley Barbour ruled out a 2012 presidential bid on Monday, saying he lacked the necessary "absolute fire in the belly" to run and wasn't ready for the "all-consuming effort." The announcement was unexpected, given the two-term governor's recent visits to several states with early presidential contests, including Iowa, New Hampshire and South Carolina. He also had lined up political advisers for a possible run, and he had tested an economy-focused campaign speech in Chicago last month. The stout governor had even lost some weight as advisers had ...

WASHINGTON -- Republicans are pressing ahead with one of the most ambitious and risky long-term spending agendas in memory, yet the dozen or so potential White House hopefuls are nearly invisible on the issue. They can't stay on the sidelines for long, however. The contentious debate will rope them in on terms they might find hard to control. The triumph of tea party candidates in 2010 pumped new urgency into a long-brewing Republican Party push for major cuts in domestic and benefit programs, including Medicare and Social Security. In the absence of a Republican president or ...
CHICAGO -- President Barack Obama's relationship with his hometown may be best described as a long-distance love affair. That looks like it's about to change. Obama is returning to his roots as he embarks on his re-election race for 2012. He's setting up his campaign headquarters in a downtown high-rise near Grant Park, the site of his victory celebration in November 2008. A Chicago base could reinforce a connection to a city that aides say keeps Obama grounded while he lives in the nation's capital. "The conversation in Washington is completely different than the conversation you hear out ...

Donald Trump, who says he's weighing a run for president next year, waded into the "birther" controversy this week, telling ABC's "Good Morning America" that he has "a little doubt" that Barack Obama was born in the United States. The reason? Trump said he finds it strange that "nobody knew" Obama as a young child in Hawaii. "Let me tell you . . . if I got the nomination, if I decide to run, you may go back and interview people from my kindergarten. They'll remember me. [With Obama,] nobody comes forward. Nobody knows who he is until later in his life. It's very strange." Birther proponents ...
A group of 450 Democratic donors have been asked to raise $350,000 each this year as part of President Obama's re-election campaign. If successful, the effort would amass $157 million in 2011 alone, more than double what that same group generated four years earlier. The New York Times reports that the fundraising appeal came during a Washington meeting of the Democratic Party's national finance committee and advisory board. The fundraisers were exhorted to do their part by Jim Messina, who is managing the president's re-election campaign. In his 2008 run for the presidency, Obama raised $750 ...
