(July 11) -- Everyone who has read "To Kill a Mockingbird" has a "To Kill a Mockingbird" story. Just as each of us can say exactly where we were at the moment we learned that 9/11 was not an accident, just as each of us remembers with indelible lucidity our first kiss, all of us who have read that novel have a story that makes the book uniquely our own. (July 11) -- The summer I met Scout Finch, I'd just moved into the seventh place I would call "home," where I would begin the sixth grade in the fifth of six grade schools I would attend. 'To Kill a Mockingbird' Turns 50, but Where Is Harper Lee?

This summer America celebrates the 50th anniversary of the publication of "To Kill a Mockingbird," but don't count on an appearance by the reclusive author, 84-year-old Harper Lee of Monroeville, Alabama. She hasn't granted an interview since 1964. She never gives speeches. She's rarely seen outside of her hometown. And she's apparently made her peace with her status as a one-book author. McCain Camp Flubs NASA Press Release

The McCain campaign sent out a press release last night with McCain's statement on the 50th anniversary of NASA. Actually, they sent out two press releases. The first contained a passage that seemed to feature McCain channeling a Soviet cosmonaut: As President, I will act to make ensure our astronauts will continue to explore space... "Please act to make ensure you are voting for me!!" A minor gaffe like this, on its own, is not a big deal. True, a 5th grader could have proofread the release and corrected it, but the Democrats have regulated 5th graders right out of the labor market. In ...
