Pennsylvania Teen Helps Deliver Surprise Sister

A Pennsylvania teenager helped deliver a surprise Monday morning. With help from 911 dispatcher Shawn Pistorius, the 13-year-old boy helped his mom through the birth of his new sister. His mother didn't even know she was pregnant. "She had told me she didn't know she was pregnant, but she thought she was having a baby," Pistorius, 42, told Pittsburgh's WTAE. He fielded the 7 a.m. call coming in from Butler County, Pa., and called back after the call disconnected. A 13-year-old boy answered the phone. With his mom screaming in the background and his sister's head crowning, the boy remained ...

Unsealed NY Indictment Reveals Case Against 5 Men

NEW YORK -- The details of the criminal charges against the self-professed mastermind of the Sept. 11 attacks and four other defendants became moot for a civilian jury when they were finally made public Monday, just as Attorney General Eric Holder was announcing the men will be prosecuted at a military tribunal instead of in a courthouse just blocks from the World Trade Center site. U.S. District Judge Kevin Duffy signed an order dismissing the indictment against Khalid Sheik Mohammed as he unsealed the Dec. 14, 2009 document, signed by U.S. attorneys Preet Bharara for the Southern District ...

9/11 Mastermind, 4 Alleged Henchmen to Face Military Tribunal

WASHINGTON -- Yielding to political opposition, Attorney General Eric Holder announced Monday that 9/11 mastermind Khalid Sheikh Mohammed and four alleged henchmen will be referred to military commissions for trial rather than to a civilian federal court in New York. The families of those killed in the Sept. 11 attacks have waited almost a decade for justice, and "it must not be delayed any longer," Holder told a news conference. Holder had announced the earlier plan for trial in New York City in November 2009, but that foundered amid widespread opposition to a civilian court trial, ...

Tucson Shooting Victim Honored With 9/11 Memory

ORO VALLEY, Ariz. -- You think of Christina-Taylor Green when you see the patch of dirt where she scooped grounders at second base in Canyon del Oro Little League. You think of the youngest victim of the Tucson shootings when you see the batter's box where she knocked line drives. And you think of her when you see the 9-foot, 11-inch-tall silver statue of an angel just beyond the outfield fence. Joshua Lott, Getty Images The 'Freedom's Steadfast Angel of Love' sculpture is seen during a memorial for Christina-Taylor Green at Kriegh Park April 1, 2011 in Oro Valley, Arizona. "It's ...

Brother and Sister Save Baby Sitter's Life

Brother and Sister Save Baby Sitter's Life

A Connecticut police department is celebrating a pair of siblings who saved their baby sitter's life in January. Naida Maldonado, a former police officer, has been baby-sitting Nina Stoop, 7, and her brother Tucker, 10, their entire lives. When Maldonado had trouble breathing around dinnertime on Jan. 26, Nina knew something was wrong. She fetched Tucker, who called 911 and clearly relayed the pertinent information. Sgt. Jeremiah Johnson of the Darien Police Department fed Tucker a series of questions: Are her eyes open? ("No. Yes. No. Sort of. Not that well.") Can she talk? ("Um, No.") Was ...

Man Calls 911 From Jail: 'I'm Getting Hogtied to the Holding Cell Up Here'

This might be the worst way to use your one phone call. Emergency dispatchers in Sandusky, Ohio, were surprised to receive a call from a man who they say was already in custody early Sunday. Law enforcement officials say Joseph Walsh, 26, used his cell phone to call 911 from a Sandusky Police Department holding cell so he could complain about being held against his will, The Morning Journal reports. ...

Man Accused of Calling 911 and Explicitly Describing Viagra Overdose

Police hope a man in Florida will think long and hard before he prank calls 911 again. Investigators in Broward County say 28-year-old Matthew Wade Douglas Jr. is responsible for two obscene 911 calls in which a man graphically described symptoms -- and raunchy home remedies -- following an alleged overdose on the impotence drug Viagra. Douglas is accused of calling 911 after midnight on Jan. 16, giving a fake name and address, and claiming he needed medical help because he had swallowed too many little blue pills, according to a police report posted on the Broward Sheriff's Office website. ...

Should Rep. Peter King Investigate the Catholic Church?

Should Rep. Peter King Investigate the Catholic Church?

Rep. Peter King, the Long Island congressman who for years supported the Irish Republican Army as it waged a terror campaign to eject the British from Northern Ireland, says that track record has no bearing on his controversial decision to hold hearings this week on what he calls the "radicalization" of Islam in America. The two examples are different, he argues, and the main reason is that unlike radical Muslims, the I.R.A. never launched attacks in the United States. (That made sense, since Irish-Americans were sending crucial material support to the I.R.A.) "I understand why people who ...

NYPD Helicopter Video Shows 9/11 Aftermath [VIDEO]

"Holy crap!" a man shouts, watching the aftermath of the World Trade Center attacks. A new 17-minute video of the twin towers after they were hit on Sept. 11, 2001, taken from aboard a New York Police Department helicopter, shows thick, black smoke billowing out into the Lower Manhattan sky. The video was posted by the website Cryptome, which says it publishes documents that are "open, secret and classified." In posting the video on YouTube, the group said the video was provided by NYPD to the National Institute of Standards and Technology for its trade center investigation. "Holy crap! ...

Patriot Act: Congress Sends Obama Short-Term Wiretap Authority

Patriot Act: Congress Sends Obama Short-Term Wiretap Authority

Congress gave President Obama what he wanted Thursday: a bill extending federal authority for use of "roving wiretaps" and other surveillance techniques. But the president wanted the so-called Patriot Act continued until 2013 and this extension is only for 90 days. The caution comes from concern over three sections of the broader law: reauthorizing use of moveable wiretaps that don't require multiple court orders; giving the FBI access to tangible items like library records in international cases; and permitting surveillance of "lone wolf" suspects not connected to specific terrorist groups. ...
