Click here to visit the new home of Politics Daily! The "Cornhusker Kickback" has become synonymous with the charge that Democrats used special deals and payoffs to get senators to vote for their health care reform bills. But Sen. Ben Nelson (D-Neb.) -- criticized, unfairly he says, for the Cornhusker Kickback -- told Politics Daily in an interview that the media got it wrong in reporting that he had traded his vote in return for the federal government paying his state's share of significantly expanding the Medicaid rolls, which is required by the new law. Although the Senate's reconciliation bill extends Nebraska's deal to all 50 states, the ...
PHILADELPHIA -- Kathleen Turner leans back in an old-fashioned wooden swivel chair and props her feet -- shod in bright red cowboy boots -- smack on top of a desk. For the next 75 minutes, the voluptuous, whiskey-voiced Turner is up and down as she channels Molly Ivins, the high-born Texas populist; profane, hilarious and astute chronicler of dumb-as-dirt, racist, sexist and plain ol' thieving politicians; and an absolutely ferocious, itinerant First Amendment junkyard dog. "Red Hot Patriot: The Kick-Ass Wit of Molly Ivins" had its world premiere Wednesday night at the Philadelphia Theatre ...
Forty-nine percent of Americans say that Sunday's passage of comprehensive health care reform was a "good thing" while 40 percent disagreed, with 11 percent undecided, according to a Gallup poll conducted March 22. Democrats regarded it as a good thing by 79 percent to 9 percent, with 12 percent undecided, while Republicans said the opposite by 76 percent to 14 percent, with 10 percent undecided. Independents were evenly divided with 46 percent saying it was a good thing, 45 percent a bad thing and 10 percent undecided. The margin of error is 4 points. While a plurality approved of the ...

On Sunday, House Minority Leader John Boehner, in an impassioned floor speech, said this: We have failed to listen to America. And we have failed to reflect the will of our constituents. And when we fail to reflect that will -- we fail ourselves and we fail our country. Shame on us. Shame on this body. Shame on each and every one of you who substitutes your will and your desires above those of your fellow countrymen. Around this chamber, looking upon us are the lawgivers -- from Moses, to Gaius, to Blackstone, to Thomas Jefferson. By our actions today, we disgrace their values. We break the ...
ACORN is losing its state affiliates and is on the brink of bankruptcy. Once a body of more than 400,000 members and 1,200 neighborhood chapters in 75 American cities, ACORN has been pounded for the last six months following a now famous pimp and prostitute "sting." Documented by suspiciously edited videotapes, the political theater starring James O'Keefe III as the trick-turning avenger set off investigations by five federal agencies including the FBI and the Government Accountability Office (GAO), sparked several congressional hearings, led quickly to suspension of government funding, and ...
Fox's Glenn Beck and Sojourner's Jim Wallis are dueling about the meaning of social justice and the Bible. Neither man will be mistaken for Reinhold Niebuhr. The dispute started when Beck, on his radio show, said, "I beg you, look for the words 'social justice' or 'economic justice' on your church Web site. If you find it, run as fast as you can. Social justice and economic justice, they are code words. . . . Am I advising people to leave their church? Yes! If I am going to Jeremiah Wright's church. If you have a priest that is pushing social justice, go find another parish. Go alert your ...

During his speech in Strongsville, Ohio, on Monday afternoon, President Obama highlighted the struggle of Natoma Canfield, a cleaning woman from the nearby town of Medina who is fighting cancer without benefit of health insurance. But it was another woman, Ingrid Martin, an out-of-work health care sales representative, who caught his attention -- and debated him on the merits of his health care plan for two minutes after his speech. Martin has been unemployed for almost six months. Her last job was with HealthSmart, a privately held health care benefit management organization. She has health ...
The Texas Board of Education voted last Friday to add conservative values and historical interpretations to the statewide social studies curriculum. As Don McLeroy, a dentist who leads the dominant Christian conservative faction on the state board, complained to The New York Times, "Textbooks are mostly the product of the liberal establishment." Not anymore in Texas, unless Friday's preliminary vote is overturned. The revised curriculum (which plays up the Christian faith of the Founding Fathers, the merits of Joe McCarthy's anti-Communist crusade and the enduring historical importance of ...
