Is LASIK Eye Surgery Safe? FDA Scientist Regrets Saying 'Yes'

In Washington, D.C., a culture that embraces regulatory oversight and rule-making and where bureaucracies are everywhere, no federal agency is more warren-like than the Food and Drug Administration, which regulates the safety and efficacy of food, pharmaceuticals, cosmetics and medical devices. The health and well-being of every American depends on the FDA's rigorous collecting, sifting and interpreting of data to approve products ranging from those that cure nail fungus to devices that electronically zap the brain to relieve anxiety. FDA regulators are scientist bureaucrats who tirelessly ...

So What Does Dick Cheney Really Think of Sarah Palin? [VIDEO]

Dick Cheney isn't shy about expressing his opinions -- unless the question involves Sarah Palin. The former vice president recently sat down with NBC News for his first interview since undergoing heart surgery in July. In a wide-ranging discussion, he offered his take on the harsh criticism he's received, President Barack Obama's re-election chances and the Tucson shootings. Told that his memoir-in-progress is rumored to be "candid and blunt" and that "some scores will be settled," Cheney chuckled. "Well, I have a bit of the sense that I'm going to get the last word," he said. But when ...

Parents Attack Carjacker to Save Their Baby [VIDEO]

(Nov. 26) -- They were standing just a few yards away, talking to family in the final hours of a long road trip, when a man jumped into their idling car at a Kansas City, Mo., gas station and sped off with their 6-month-old daughter strapped in the back seat. Their hearts pounding, Melanie and Aaron Richman ran. She was able to grab onto the passenger side and smash the window with her elbow. He somehow pulled himself inside the car and started punching and kicking the carjacker. "I was just sitting upside down in the passenger seat kicking him and telling him my baby was in the car. 'You're ...

Sarah Palin: I Can Beat Obama

Not only is Sarah Palin considering a run for president in 2012, she's confident she can win. The former Alaska governor told ABC News' Barbara Walters for a profile airing next month that she's trying to determine whether throwing her hat into the ring is a "good thing for the country, for the discourse, for my family." The 2008 vice presidential nominee also told The New York Times for a profile running in this weekend's magazine that she's "engaged in the internal deliberations" of mounting a campaign. "If you ran for president, could you beat Barack Obama?" asked Walters. "I believe ...

ABC, Fox Bring In Big Ratings on Election Night

ABC's election-night coverage brought in the most viewers among broadcast networks, but it was cable's Fox News that had the biggest numbers overall. Nielsen Co. data released Thursday showed an average of 6.8 million viewers tuned in for ABC's telecast, according to TV By The Numbers. The coverage, anchored by Diane Sawyer and George Stephanopoulos, ran from 9:30 p.m. to 10:55 p.m. ET and got a boost from its lead-in, the mega-hit "Dancing With the Stars." NBC's coverage, anchored by Brian Williams, came a close second, with 6.362 million total viewers from 9-10:54 p.m. ET. CBS News ...

Andrew Breitbart Slams ABC for Dropping Him From Election Coverage

(Nov. 2) -- Maybe Fox News will hire him. On the day that he was supposed to provide commentary about the outcome of the midterm elections, conservative media personality Andrew Breitbart learned from ABC News that his services would no longer be required. Breitbart runs Big Government, the right-leaning website that was responsible for airing an edited clip of USDA official Shirley Sherrod that resulted in her firing. On Tuesday, Andrew Morse, the chief of ABC's political division, sent Breitbart the following letter: Dear Mr. Breitbart, We have spent the past several days trying to make ...

Clarence Thomas' Wife Asks Anita Hill for Apology

Clarence Thomas' Wife Asks Anita Hill for Apology

When Brandeis University professor Anita Hill got a phone message earlier this week from a woman purporting to be the wife of Clarence Thomas, she assumed it was a prank and reported it to campus police. But ABC News said Tuesday the message was legitimate. It was indeed Virginia Thomas, calling to ask Hill to issue an apology for testifying against her husband during his Supreme Court confirmation hearings 19 years ago. "I just wanted to reach across the airwaves and the years and ask you to consider something," Virginia Thomas said on Hill's school voice mail. "I would love you to ...

ABC News Coverage of San Bruno Explosion a Bit 'Lost'

(Sept. 10) -- It seems that the DHARMA Initiative has infiltrated ABC News. ABC News' Bay Area affiliate, KGO-TV, is covering the San Bruno, Calif., explosion with a breaking-news photo collage that features, among other images, a television still from an episode of the popular drama "Lost." The photograph of a burning van featured in the top right corner of the KGO-TV photo-spread seems to be identical to an image of a smoldering van from the Emmy-winning series that has been posted on "Lost" fan websites like TV Fanatic. ABC News This photo on the website of KGO, an ABC West Coast ...

Harry Reid: 'I Had Nothing To Do' With Unemployment, Foreclosures

Republicans are hammering Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid for comments he made to ABC News saying he bears no responsibility for Nevada's current economic crisis. "You know that I had nothing to do with the massive foreclosures here. You know that I had nothing to do with these unemployment figures," Reid told ABC's Jonathan Karl in an interview that airs on the network Tuesday. "In fact, I've worked hard to change them. My job is to create jobs. My opponent says that is not her job to create jobs. And I think that is really wrong. I think it is my job to create jobs and I've done my best. ...

Goldline International, Company Pitched by Glenn Beck, Under Investigation

(July 19) -- All that glitters may not be entirely golden. Officials in Los Angeles and Santa Monica counties are launching an investigation into the business practices of Goldline International, a company that employs conservative politicians and pundits -- from Glenn Beck to Mike Huckabee -- as pitchmen to sell gold. As reported by ABC News, the investigation centers on pressure that Goldline is alleged to have put on customers to purchase limited-edition gold coins, whose value is much less than if the customers bought gold bullion instead. "There are two main types of complaints ...
