AOL News has a new home! The Huffington Post.
Click here to visit the new home of Politics Daily! When a 92-year-old woman knocks on your door, asks for a kiss, and carries a gun, she means business. That's just one of the many lessons learned as AOL Weird News looks at the most amusing mug shots taken from across the country (mainly Florida and California, of course) in March and April. You'll hear about a former cop accused of posing as a massage parlor inspector, a woman who stripped down to her bare essentials after being told her G-string was inappropriate for a family beach, and a stolen box of sex toys positively identified by the owner. ...
Prince William and Kate Middleton have a royal wedding to plan, but they aren't the only British couple keeping busy these days. Steph and Mel Teague also have their hands full, but in a slightly different way: Their hands are filled with sex toys. The Teagues, of Birmingham, have just won a nationwide contest in Britain to become sex-toy reviewers for Your Pleasure Zone, an online and mail order retailer of adult products. For seven years, Roger Huang, a pastor who runs a rescue mission in San Francisco's Tenderloin district, has been trying to shut down the sex shops there. This week he may have seen a sign that his efforts are working. On Wednesday, a man burst into flames while inside one of those porn shops, police said. Could this bizarre incident be attributed to a higher power? Jeff Costello, AOL News An employee smokes in front of the Golden Gate Adult Superstore in San Francisco. "I believe so. I definitely believe so," Huang told AOL News, adding that he hopes the unidentified man is ...
In developing countries, being unable to afford shoes is an unfortunate fact of life for many children. Children often have to walk barefoot for miles to get to school, to get clean water or to find medical assistance. And being barefoot in all sorts of weather and terrain puts these children at risk for diseases and infections that could be prevented if they simply had shoes on their feet. In 2006, American Blake Mycoskie was biking in Argentina and witnessed this problem firsthand. Wanting to help get shoes on the feet of children in need, he created TOMS Shoes. TOMS' business model is ...
Michelle Obama's war on obesity is getting some support from the Federal Transit Administration: It wants to beef up bus-testing regulations to account for the increased poundage of its passengers. After studying the fats, er, facts, the FTA is proposing to change the average passenger weight from 150 to 175 pounds and the floor space occupied per standing passenger from 1.5 to 1.75 square feet. Karen Bleier, AFP / Getty Images Americans are getting bigger, so the Federal Transit Administration wants to change bus-testing regulations to reflect this. And because passengers are ...
On a dusty stretch of I-10 in Arizona, near the California border, sits the tiny town of Quartzsite. It's a mecca for RV snowbirds along with gem and mineral rock hounders. But there's another attraction along the main strip that's fascinated folks for more than 20 years: the Reader's Oasis bookstore. Why is it so popular? Well, it might be the thousands of rare, interesting, well-priced books and magazines crammed into every bit of spare space. Then again, it might be the bookseller himself, a rail-thin, leather-tanned storyteller named Paul Winer. Chris Epting for AOL ...
When Japan was hit by the earthquake and tsunami Friday, AOL immediately posted a "Tsunami Relief: How You Can Help" link on the top of its home page and also started rotating advertisements for five nonprofits dedicated to the relief efforts, including the American Red Cross. Since then, the AOL community already has generously donated $200,000 toward disaster relief for Japan, and that number keeps climbing. FARMINGTON, N.M. -- A New Mexico woman says a sewing needle pierced her tongue after she bit into a plate of ribs and mashed potatoes at a Chili's restaurant. Ashley Phillips says she pulled a needle about 2-inches long from her mouth at the Chili's in Farmington last July. The 23-year-old says Chili's employees quickly took the needle, and a manager refused to give it back when she and her husband returned to request it for testing. Phillips says she's suing the Chili's chain because the company took 52 days to send the needle to a lab. She says she's since tested clean for HIV, Hepatitis ...
Everyone's a media critic. At least, that's how it seems, as Twitter weighs in on the news that Surge Desk's bosses at AOL have purchased The Huffington Post for $315 million. Of course, Twitter users can't agree on whether this is a smart, bold move or a big mistake for both parties. But what fun would there be in unanimous opinion online? Some think this is a coup for Arianna Huffington. .bbpBox34626069164204030 {background:url(http://a3.twimg.com/a/1295051201/images/themes/theme1/bg.png) #C0DEED;padding:20px;} p.bbpTweet{background:#fff;padding:10px 12px 10px ...
