Are we closer to the mountaintop? A new AP-GfK poll finds that 77 percent of respondents believe America has made "significant progress toward Martin Luther King Jr.'s dream of equality," roughly equivalent to the percentage of those who responded in 2006, more than two years before President Barack Obama became president. Twenty-two percent of those surveyed said that there has been "no significant progress" in reaching racial equality. At the same time, however, 69 percent of Americans said they did not plan to do anything to commemorate Dr. King's national holiday, while 30 percent said ...
LOS ANGELES -- Concertgoers sick of ballooning ticket prices should have some extra pocket change to rattle with their rock 'n' roll in the new year. 2010 was tough for the concert business as high prices kept many fans at home. Promoters now say they plan to make shows more affordable in 2011. But they'll also try to sell more T-shirts and other merchandise to make up for lost revenue. Heading into last summer, usually the busiest time of the year, prices were set too high despite the sluggish economy. Managers and promoters believed fans would keep paying for the one or two ...
MIAMI (Aug. 6) -- A suspected al-Qaida operative who lived for more than 15 years in the U.S. has become chief of the terror network's global operations, the FBI says, marking the first time a leader so intimately familiar with American society has been placed in charge of planning attacks. Adnan Shukrijumah, 35, has taken over a position once held by 9/11 mastermind Khalid Sheikh Mohammed, who was captured in 2003, Miami-based FBI counterterrorism agent Brian LeBlanc told The Associated Press in an exclusive interview. That puts him in regular contact with al-Qaida's senior leadership, ...
(Dec. 17) -- When she was 13, Susan -- not her real name -- fell victim to cyber bullying. One of her friends on Facebook posted a picture of actor Robert Pattinson, of "Twilight" fame. Susan left a lukewarm comment, saying the "Twilight" novels (which spawned the movies) were fine, but there were other, more interesting books to read. Almost instantaneously, comments started flooding in, criticizing Susan. "It got way out of control," Susan said. "People told me I should kill myself, that I was a lesbian. They'd say 'bang, you've been gang raped!'" The next day at school, a group of girls ...
What have we learned after one weekend of the college season?Brittney Griner is a freshman. OK ... that's a little obvious. But we might forget that as we are distracted by the dunking. When Griner picked up four fouls early in the second half against Tennessee, it was a needed jolt of reality. Freshmen, well, they have a tendency to foul at inconvenient times and with maddening frequency. Keeping Griner on the floor may be a bigger challenge for Baylor than breaking in a load of young players.Jayne Appel isn't 100 percent. Stanford coach Tara VanDerveer said as much about her senior center, ...

During Obama's presser last night, he repeatedly asserted that the Stimulus bill before this nation is certified pork-free. There are no earmarks, the President insisted, both to the press and to the town hall meeting yesterday. After all the lamenting from Republicans and conservative pundits about pork, can the President really be correct? Not really. I mean, look at it this way. If you are cooking a chicken, in a duck ... in a turkey, and you decide to wrap it in bacon, then you've added pork to your meal. But if, on the other hand, you're cooking a bacon log, you aren't adding pork, are ...
The polls in the presidential race have been swinging wildly as of late, with some polls showing Sen. Barack Obama pulling ahead to a big lead over Sen. John McCain while others show the race much tighter. The Associated Press poll, released yesterday falls into the latter category. The AP shows the race in a statistical tie, 44-43% for Obama. This is the second poll in recent days to show the race in a virtual flat-footed tie. The George Washington University Battleground poll, conducted by a Democratic and Republican strategist, also showed a one point lead for Obama. The AP poll was taken ...
