Political Scion Rory Reid Is Ready for His 'Glee' Tryout

Political Scion Rory Reid Is Ready for His 'Glee' Tryout

(July 3) -- Rory Reid has a famous last name in Nevada politics. You just won't find it on a lot of his campaign literature. The gubernatorial candidate has been getting national attention for omitting his surname from TV ads just as his father, Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, is in a fight for his political life. The elder Reid is facing strong opposition from Sharron Angle, a Republican with tea party support, while his 47-year-old son -- just Rory -- is trying to make the big jump from Clark County commissioner to the corner office. Rory, who grew up in Las Vegas but went to Brigham ...

National Archives Digs Deep for New Civil War Exhibit

National Archives Digs Deep for New Civil War Exhibit

WASHINGTON (April 27) -- There are no tattered wool uniforms or rusty rifle muskets in "Discovering the Civil War," a new exhibit opening Friday at the National Archives. But the paper relics that make up most of the display are in some ways much easier to grasp. Take the 1862 letter from seamstresses at the U.S. Arsenal in Philadelphia to the secretary of war. In it, they complain about losing work to a contractor who paid them half what the government did and note that many were sole wage earners because their husbands were away in the Army. ...

Obama: Washington D.C. Deserves Full Voting Member of U.S. House

On the anniversary of the day Abraham Lincoln freed slaves living in the nation's capital, President Obama called on Congress to grant a full vote to the Washington, D.C., "delegate" in the House of Representatives. That delegate, Eleanor Holmes Norton, was part of planned events Friday in Washington honoring what is known as "D.C. Emancipation Day." Obama said he was proud that an original copy of the Emancipation Proclamation -- issued by Lincoln nine months after the 1862 Washington document -- now hangs in the Oval Office. The issue of D.C. Statehood -- or alternatively of adding members ...

Midlife and Beyond: Bringing Lincoln's Lessons Home

Midlife and Beyond: Bringing Lincoln's Lessons Home

I just read my children a bedtime story that was probably too young for them, but I liked Ruth Krauss' "A Hole Is to Dig" just as much tonight as I did when I was 3. It's full of big-hearted definitions, including, "A brother is to help you," "Rugs are so dogs have napkins" and "Mashed potatoes are to give everybody enough." ...

Byrd," has just surveyed 65 leading historians in hopes of ranking America's presidents from best to worst.Well the historians have weighed in (having previously done so in 2000) and the results may shock you...Benjamin Harrison has leapfrogged Martin Van Buren for the title of 30th best! While you're recovering from that bombshell, you might care to know that Abraham Lincoln came in first place, just as he did in the last survey. Obama Celebrates Hoover's Half-Birthday 48 Hours Too Late

It appears that being president isn't quite as easy as Barack Obama had believed it might be. First he bungled the oath of office under the guidance of Chief Justice Roberts. Then he banged his head on the door of the presidential helicopter. But the unraveling began in earnest today, when Obama arrived 48 hours late for a ceremony honoring the half-birthday of our 31st president, Herbert Hoover. Then to shield himself from angry Hooverphiles in Washington, Obama made quick plans to abscond to Springfield, Illinois...A long day of homages to Abraham Lincoln has begun in Washington, where ...

Obama Asks WWLE? (What Would Lincoln Eat?)

Thank God that Doris Kearns Goodwin didn't write a profile of Montezuma's cabinet. Otherwise they'd be eating human flesh at Barack Obama's inauguration! In case you don't follow, the president-elect has shown what you might call a bit of an obsession with Abraham Lincoln, the subject of Goodwin's book Team of Rivals. First he started filling his cabinet with former political opponents-- just like Lincoln. Then he announced he'd be taking the oath of office using Lincoln's Bible. And now he plans to start his presidency with the same meal that Honest Abe ate in 1861...The Inaugural Luncheon is a ...

McCain/Palin: Team of Rivals

By  David Knowles - Politics Daily
McCain/Palin: Team of Rivals

In her much acclaimed biography of Abraham Lincoln, Team of Rivals, Doris Kearns Goodwin chronicles the relationship between Lincoln and three of his advisers--William H. Seward, Salmon P. Chase, and Edward Bates. None of them men was particularly fond of Lincoln, thinking him something of an inexperienced hick. But Lincoln, as described by Goodwin, followed to the adage, "Keep your friends close, and your enemies closer," and gave each of his critics a job in his administration. In our current presidential campaign we're seeing a similar dynamic in play. This time, however, the would-be ...

Obama's Ears Too Big for Rushmore

By  Dave - Politics Daily
Obama's Ears Too Big for Rushmore

Self Mockery from Obama. Democrat Barack Obama paid an unscheduled late-night visit to Mount Rushmore Friday, visiting the national memorial at closing time and joking that his ears were too big to ever be included in such a display. Two days after rival Hillary Rodham Clinton made a campaign stop here, Obama joined a group of reporters and staff members for an after-dark sightseeing visit to the national memorial, where the faces of four presidents are carved into the mountain. South Dakota and Montana hold their primary elections on Tuesday, the final ones in the nation, and Obama was ...
