Arne Duncan Helps Students Put Best Foot Forward in School Walk

Education Secretary Arne Duncan, Washington Mayor Adrian Fenty, Washington Chancellor of Schools Michelle Rhee and Federal Highway Administrator Victor Mendez helped more than 100 students start the second day of school Tuesday -- with a walk. The two-block walk to Maury Elementary School in Washington promoted the Transportation Department's Safe Routes to School program, in which more than 6,000 schools participate nationwide. Young Washington Mayor Challenged by Fellow Democrat

The honeymoon ended a while back for Washington's young mayor, Adrian Fenty. But on Tuesday Fenty's relationship with voters took another turn as D.C. Council Chairman Vincent C. Gray, a fellow Democrat, announced he would challenge Fenty in his bid for re-election to a second term. Gray, 67, stressed his deep roots in Washington, calling himself "a dyed in the wool homie," born in the city and schooled there with a degree from George Washington University. The D.C. City Council has approved a bill granting same-sex couples the right to marry in the District. The legislation found overwhelming support on the 13-member council on Tuesday, with only council members Marion Barry and Yvette Alexander voting against it. The council must take a second vote before the measure can be sent to Mayor Adrian Fenty, who has indicated he will sign it. D.C. Council Accuses Schools Chief Michelle Rhee of Illegally Firing Teachers

A day-long oversight hearing erupted into open warfare between the D.C. Council and public schools chancellor Michelle Rhee, whom the council accused of ignoring its recommendations on how to cut the 2010 budget, the Washington Post reported Friday. Instead of scrapping a 2010 summer school program, Rhee opted to fire 266 teachers to help close an impending budget shortfall, a move she did not reveal until the Thursday hearing.
