Some Blacks See Racism in 'Birther' Questions

WASHINGTON -- Shortly after President Barack Obama declared himself an American-born citizen with papers to prove it, Baratunde Thurston declared himself a disgusted black man. "I find it hard to summarize in mere words the amount of pain and rage this incident has caused," Thurston said. "This" would be the nation's first black president standing in the White House, blue power suit and all, going on TV to debunk, in more detail than before, the persistent, he-ain't-really-an-American rumors fanned anew by Donald Trump, the developer and might-be presidential candidate. Many ...

Nation of Islam Looks to UFOs to Save the World

Nation of Islam Looks to UFOs to Save the World

It isn't often you hear about entire religious groups seriously interested in unidentified flying objects. But UFOs are what the Nation of Islam, led by the controversial Minister Louis Farrakhan, considers among its core beliefs. The Nation of Islam was founded in 1930 in Detroit by a former clothing salesman, Wallace Dodd Fard (Muhammad later added to his name), a minister whose followers believed was the personification of God on Earth. His student and successor, Elijah Poole (who later became Elijah Muhammad), referred to Fard as a spokesman of God or Allah. NOI followers believe they ...

The Color of Legalized Pot? California's Prop 19 Ignites Intraracial Tension

(Oct. 26) -- We all know the stereotypes: Opponents of marijuana are people with short hair, khaki pants and light skin who like a good amount of mayonnaise on their white bread, and supporters are... pretty much everyone else. But in California, as everywhere else, the racial lines are blurry, and old stereotypes might prove a poor predictor of how the various populations in the nation's largest, most diverse state will vote when it comes to Proposition 19. As November draws near, there are increasing signs that race will play an important role in the upcoming vote on whether to legalize ...

NAACP Study: Whites Smoke More Pot, but Blacks and Latinos Are Arrested More

(Oct. 21 ) -- Is it a smoke screen, or proof of the need for change? As California prepares to vote on Proposition 19, which would legalize recreational use of marijuana for people 18 and older, a new study by the NAACP finds that the state's African-American and Latino residents are far more likely to be arrested for low-level pot possession, even though whites, according to government statistics, use the drug in greater numbers. "Since 1990, arrests for nearly every serious crime have declined in California," the report says. "Yet arrests for possession of marijuana, usually for very small ...

Only Whites 'Mourning in America'?

Only Whites 'Mourning in America'?

(Sept. 23) -- On its politics blog, The Caucus, The New York Times posted a new ad by Citizens for the Republic, a conservative lobbying group, called "Mourning in America." It's a play on a 1984 Ronald Reagan ad called "Morning in America." The Times reports: The ad is a blunt, almost point-by-point comparison to the hopeful, optimistic spot from Reagan's re-election year. "Morning in America" promoted the future, noting, "This afternoon, 6,500 young men and women will be married and with inflation at less than half of what it was just four years ago, they can look forward with confidence ...

Study: Blacks Stricken From Juries in Southern States

(June 2) -- Black Americans are being stricken from Southern juries -- especially in cases of capital punishment -- because they live in poor neighborhoods, chew gum or are thought to have "low intelligence," according to a new report. The two-year study published today by the nonprofit Equal Justice Initiative found "shocking evidence of racial discrimination" in jury pool selection across eight Southern states. "We are undermining the credibility of the entire criminal justice system," Bryan Stevenson, director of the Equal Justice Initiative, told AOL News in a phone interview ...

Black Pastors and Gay Rights: D.C. Becomes a Battleground

Black Pastors and Gay Rights: D.C. Becomes a Battleground

The nation's capital is suddenly center court in America's loud argument over gay marriage. Nothing new about that, except that this time the battle is being hashed out in the streets, churches and living rooms in working-class wards of the city. While there is something poignant about both sides literally singing the same hymn ("We Shall Overcome") at its rallies, there is also something refreshing about the debate taking place in the unofficial part of Washington, D.C: For once, it's not partisan. ...
