NATO: Key al-Qaida Figure Killed in Afghanistan

KABUL, Afghanistan - A NATO airstrike earlier this month killed a key al-Qaida operative in Afghanistan - a regional commander in charge of suicide bombings and cash flow, the international military coalition said Tuesday. NATO identified the man killed in the April 13 airstrike in Dangam district of eastern Kunar province as Abu Hafs al-Najdi, also known as Abdul Ghani. The alliance said the strike also killed a number of other insurgents, including another al-Qaida leader known as Waqas. Al-Najdi, a Saudi citizen, directed al-Qaida operations in Kunar and traveled regularly between ...

Heavy Clashes in Libya's Rebel-Held Misrata

MISRATA, Libya -- Anti-government fighters battled forces loyal to Moammar Gadhafi in fierce clashes Friday in the only major rebel-held city in western Libya as international relief efforts were stepped up for civilians caught in the crossfire. Heavy shelling was heard at nightfall outside the city, where some neighborhoods have been nearly abandoned after residents fled to safer areas during weeks of fighting. Nearly all buildings were pockmarked from gunfire. It was unclear which side had the upper hand. But a witness said rebel forces were trying to keep Gadhafi's troops from ...

Libyan Rebel Leader Says NATO Isn't Doing Enough

BENGHAZI, Libya -- A rebel military leader lashed out at NATO Tuesday, saying it was falling short in its mission to protect Libyan civilians. The alliance said ruler Moammar Gadhafi's forces position heavy weapons in populated areas, preventing some airstrikes. Abdel-Fattah Younis, chief of staff for the rebel military and Gadhafi's former interior minister, said he was asking the opposition's leadership council to take their grievances to the U.N. Security Council, which authorized force in Libya to stop government troops from wiping out the anti-Gadhafi uprising that began Feb. 15. ...

US Likely to Keep Combat Role After Libya Shift

WASHINGTON -- The United States welcomed a partial handover for the Libyan air campaign to NATO on Thursday, but the allies apparently balked at assuming full control and the U.S. military was left in charge of the brunt of combat. NATO agreed to take over command of the newly established no-fly zone over Libya, protective flights meant to deter Libyan strongman Moammar Gadhafi from putting warplanes in the air. That leaves the U.S. with responsibility for attacks on Gadhafi's ground forces and other targets, which are the toughest and most controversial portion of the operation. The U.S had ...

French Jets Hit Libya Targets; US Cuts Combat Role

BENGHAZI, Libya -- French fighter jets hit aircraft and a crossroads military base deep inside Libya on Thursday as the U.S. reduced its combat role in the international operation that is working to thwart Moammar Gadhafi's forces by land, sea and air. Libya's air force has been effectively neutralized, and the government has taken part of its fight to the airwaves. State television aired pictures of bodies it said were victims of airstrikes, but a U.S. intelligence report bolstered rebel claims that Gadhafi's forces had simply taken bodies from a morgue. International military support for ...

NATO Airstrike Accidentally Kills 2 Civilians in Afghanistan

KABUL, Afghanistan -- A NATO helicopter gunship inadvertently killed two civilians while attacking suspected insurgents in the northern province of Khost, NATO announced Thursday. The attack targeted was a Haqqani network leader in Tere Zayi district on Wednesday, according to NATO. "At the time of the strike, two civilians were walking near the moving targeted vehicle," NATO said Thursday. "They were previously unseen by coalition forces prior to the initiation of the airstrike. Unfortunately both were killed as an unintended result of the strike." Khost provincial police chief Abdul Hakim ...

Protests Spike in Greece as Government Weighs Support of Attack on Libya

ATHENS, Greece -- Demonstrators took to the streets of the capital today to protest international air strikes against military assets of Libyan leader Moammar Gadhafi as Greece weighed its support of the allied offensive. Toting anti-war banners and shouting slogans against the bombing raids, hundreds of leftist protesters -- mainly high school and university students -- gathered in central Athens, setting off on a protest march to the Parliament. Similar protests also took place on the island of Crete, where hundreds marched to the U.S.-controlled Souda Bay naval base, which provides ...

Gadhafi Steps Up Airstrikes; West Weighs Rebels' Plea for No-Fly Zone

Western allies are weighing military options against Libya, including a no-fly zone over the country, after forces loyal to Moammar Gadhafi unleashed a weekend of furious air assaults against rebels fighting his regime. At the White House today, President Barack Obama warned that Gadhafi's supporters "will be held accountable for whatever violence continues to take place," The Associated Press reported. "We've got NATO consulting in Brussels around a wide range of potential options, including potential military options, in response to the violence that continues to take place in Libya," ...

NATO Airstrike in Afghanistan Kills 33 Civilians

The Afghan Cabinet said Monday that an airstrike by NATO forces on Sunday killed 33 civilians, including three women and one child, the Associated Press reports. The deaths came amid a major offensive in which U.S. and NATO forces have put a strong emphasis on protecting civilians from the Taliban and earning their trust. "We are extremely saddened by the tragic loss of innocent lives," NATO commander Gen. Stanley McChrystal said. "I have made it clear to our forces that we are here to protect the Afghan people, and inadvertently killing or injuring civilians undermines their trust and ...
