Click here to visit the new home of Politics Daily! When the volcanic ash crisis struck Europe last Thursday, it seemed -- at first -- almost comical. But as we head into day five of what's been a near complete halt on air travel -- not to mention collateral damage in the areas of health, education and the economy -- this whole thing seems a good deal less funny. Few people could believe it when they awoke on Thursday to the news that a long dormant volcano had erupted on Iceland, spewing black clouds of ash that were sufficient to close all airports in the U.K. I mean, c'mon. An exploding volcano in Iceland, of all places? Isn't it supposed ...
Late last year the government announced it would impose multimillion-dollar fines against airlines that leave passengers stranded on the tarmac for more than three hours. Aviation experts have studied the potential impacts of those fines and determined they could lead to more flight cancellations, USA Today reported. The Department of Transportation said airlines would pay $27,500 per passenger for long delays, fines that could reach into the millions for full flights. Canceling the flight would cost far less, since the airlines save on fuel and passengers have already paid for ...
Increased security and worries about terrorism could result in major revenue losses for U.S. airlines, even if just 1 percent of their customers decide not to fly, USA Today reports. "A 1 percent drop in demand would be equal to a revenue hit of more than $1 billion," says analyst Vaughn Cordle at AirlineForecasts. Authorities say the first ex-wife of billionaire Donald Trump cussed at the children Saturday, and when flight attendants on the New York-bound plane tried to calm her, she became even more aggravated. Her spokeswoman, Catherine Saxton, did not immediately return a telephone message. Trump filed for divorce from her fourth husband earlier this month. She has not been charged in the incident at Palm Beach ...
(Dec.21) -- On Monday, the official first day of winter, airlines were scrambling to accommodate passengers affected by the cancellation of hundreds of flights after a monster weekend winter storm blanketed a swath of the East Coast. Charlene Fisk, a filmmaker from Atlanta, tried her best not to lose it at Hartsfield International Airport at 4:30 a.m. Monday when she found out she wouldn't be getting home to upstate New York anytime soon. Her US Airways connecting flight had been canceled, so she was placed on another flight to Philadelphia, which was then canceled. She's going to have to ...
