Rand Paul in Kentucky: Campaign 2010's Most Important Senate Contest

Rand Paul in Kentucky: Campaign 2010's Most Important Senate Contest

The other day, I was wondering which of the 37 Senate races underway at the moment is the most important. The one in Nevada? Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid could be booted out of the top Senate position by former Republican state assemblywoman Sharron Angle, a Tea Party darling who has called for phasing out Social Security, who has scolded out-of-work workers seeking unemployment benefits as "spoiled," and who is doing all she can to avoid taking questions from mainstream reporters. Or is it the Illinois race? This contest features two weak and flailing candidates; Republican Rep. Mark ...

Giannoulias to Get Fundraising Boost From Obama in Fight for Obama's Senate Seat

President Obama makes his first political visit to Illinois for the 2010 cycle on Aug. 5, when he'll headline fundraisers in Chicago to benefit Democratic Senate candidate Alexi Giannoulias, running for Obama's old seat, and the Democratic National Committee. Giannoulias sorely needs the help. The Illinois state treasurer raised only about $900,000 in the quarter ending June 30, while GOP rival Rep. Mark Kirk (R-Ill.) hauled in $2.3 million. Giannoulias has about $1 million on hand compared to $3.9 million for Kirk. The Giannoulias camp struggled with donors during the first half of the ...

Sarah Palin Hits Washington on Friday for Anti-Abortion Fundraiser

Sarah Palin hits Washington on Friday to headline a sold out fundraiser for an anti-abortion group, the Susan B. Anthony List at the Ronald Reagan Building, down the street from the White House. Meanwhile, Palin is readying her second book, due out in November, titled, "America By Heart: Reflections on Family, Faith and Flag." Palin is such a draw that the annual Susan B. Anthony event was revamped from a tea to a larger "Celebration of Life Breakfast," with some 550 attending, the most the room can hold. Tickets range from $150 to $25,000, which includes a VIP reception. A spokesman for ...

Senate and Governor Races Shaping Up as Close So Far in Ohio, Illinois

The races for governor and senate in two key Midwestern states -- Ohio and Illinois -- are starting out as close matches but not so in Indiana where GOP senate primary victor Dan Coats has a big lead over his Democratic foe, according to three polls released Friday. In Ohio, Democratic Lt. Gov. Lee Fisher, coming off his primary victory this week over Secretary of State Jennifer Brunner, is statistically tied with former Republican Rep. Rob Portman in their contest to fill the seat of retiring GOP Sen. George Voinovich, with Fisher ahead 43 percent to 42 percent with 4 percent preferring ...

Obama Makes Wall Street Reform Pitch in Illinois, Embraces Giannoulias

Obama Makes Wall Street Reform Pitch in Illinois, Embraces Giannoulias

"It's good to be home," President Obama said Wednesday in Quincy, Ill. A town on the western edge of the state, Quincy sits across from Missouri on the Mississippi River. Obama's been here before, when he was the junior senator from Illinois. He told the crowd at the Oakley Lindsay Center -- no strangers to flooding -- what he did on that visit. "We were filling up sandbags, weren't we?" Obama returned to Quincy to deliver a populist speech highlighting the need for Congress to pass his Wall Street reform package. The president, who had been bashing Senate Republicans for blocking the ...

Giannoulias Edges a Bit Past Kirk in Illinois Senate Race

Democrat Alexi Giannoulias, the Illinois state treasurer, has edged slightly ahead of Republican Rep. Mark Kirk in the race for the Senate, although by a statistically insignificant margin, according to a Rasmussen Reports poll conducted March 8. Giannoulias is leading by 44 percent to 41 percent, with 5 percent preferring another choice and 10 percent undecided. The margin of error is 4.5 points. In early February, Kirk had led 46 percent to 40 percent. Supporters of each are lukewarm at this point in the race. Of the 49 percent who view Kirk favorably, only 13 percent are in the "very ...

Mark Kirk in the Senate contest by 43 percent to 36 percent with 2 percent preferring someone else and 19 percent undecided. The margin of error is 4 points. Democratic Gov. Pat Quinn, who eked out a close victory in the gubernatorial primary over Comptroller Dan Hynes, leads two Republican ...

Illinois Primary on Tuesday: Is Obama's State up for Grabs?

Illinois Primary on Tuesday: Is Obama's State up for Grabs?

CHICAGO -- President Barack Obama's old Senate seat and the Illinois governorship, held by Democrats, are GOP November takeover targets as voters head to the polls for Tuesday's primary, the earliest in the nation for the 2010 election cycle. The downtown headquarters for the three front-running Democratic Senate contenders -- State treasurer Alexi Giannoulias, attorney David Hoffman and former Chicago Urban League Chief Cheryle Jackson -- are within walking distance of the Michigan Avenue high rise that housed Obama's presidential campaign for two years. But the Democratic exuberance in ...

Giannoulis Leads Kirk in Illinois Senate Match-Up

By  Bruce Drake - Politics Daily
Giannoulis Leads Kirk in Illinois Senate Match-Up

In a match-up of the two frontrunners for their parties' Senate nominations in Illinois, Democrat Alexi Giannoulis, the state treasurer, leads Republican Rep. Mark Kirk, 42 percent to 34 percent with 24 percent undecided, according to a Public Policy Polling survey conducted Jan. 22-25. A PPP poll last spring had Giannoulis and Kirk tied. The pollster says Giannoulis' numbers have probably improved because he's boosted his recognition among fellow Democrats due to the primary race. Kirk runs about evenly with the other two Democrats in the race, former Chicago Urban League President Cheryle ...
