The Landon Donovan transfer rumors just refuse to die. Will he? Won't he? And if so, with who? Yes, as the midway point in Europe fast approaches, the speculation around America's biggest soccer star is quickly building to a fever pitch. On Monday, Donovan was tied to Newcastle. Tuesday brings a fresh round of reports, with the latest in the Daily Mail, which is saying that Donovan is being pursued for a loan stint by none other than struggling London side, Fulham. Dubbed "Fulhamerica" by some supporters for its willingness to sign U.S. players, the Cottagers represent an especially ...
Clint Dempsey's legacy overseas continues to grow, as he was announced as the recipient of the BBC London 2010 Sporting Moment of the Year on Monday. The Fulham forward was honored for his goal against Juventus in the UEFA Europa League. The awards were broadcast on BBC London Radio on Sunday. Dempsey's goal on March 18, 2010 gave his upstart Fulham side an impressive win over established Italian side Juventus, and lifted the Cottagers through to the quarterfinals of the competition. Fulham's amazing run eventually extended all the way to the finals, where they fell to Spanish club Atletico ...
With all due respect to Clint Dempsey, who is enjoying another superb campaign at Craven Cottage, it's becoming increasingly arguable that Bolton's Stuart Holden is having the finest current season by an American abroad. The 25-year-old's European endeavors hit a spectacular high Sunday, when he fired home the game-winning volley in the 88th minute of Bolton's 2-1 win over Blackburn in the Lancashire derby. The strike came just seconds after the Rovers had equalized against 10-man Bolton via a Mame Biram Diouf tally. Playing his first match since Nov. 20 after recovering from a thigh injury, ...
After five months of waiting, Jonathan Bornstein is finally a Tiger. The former Chivas USA defender has joined his new club, Mexican First Division side Tigres UANL, and has begun preseason work with his new teammates. The Los Alamitos, Calif. native announced the move on July 19 after returning home from a successful run at the 2010 FIFA World Cup in South Africa with the U.S. National Team. The four-year deal will see Bornstein begin play with the Monterrey-based team in the 2011 Clausura tournament, which kicks off on January 8th of next year. On Monday, Bornstein and the rest of Tigres ...
When the final whistle sounded in Soccer City at the 2010 World Cup, most expected a flurry of transfer activity across Europe and around the globe. Instead, with clubs showing more caution due to the shaky economy, the usual post-tournament feeding frenzy was more like buying off the Dollar Menu. (Well, unless your name is Manchester City.) Indicative of this global spending slowdown were some members of the U.S. national team, who spent most of the summer looking for new clubs, albeit without much news or rumor to report. On Monday, however, with fewer than 48 hours left in the European ...
LONDON -- When you live abroad for a long time, you tend to identify certain cultural objects that anchor you with a sense of home. They are the things that -- for better or for worse -- come to signify "America." It might be a diner that serves all-day brunch. Or the blissful simplicity of a tumble dryer. Or -- depending on your politics -- the meteoric rise of a Mama Grizzly politician or a musician for whom the public is Gaga. For me, that cultural touchstone has always been Target, the iconic superstore of highways and strip malls across America, where you can buy everything from ...
