Pre-Allegation Poll: Nikki Haley Has Big Lead in S.C. Race for GOP Governor Nod

While it has yet to be seen whether there will be any impact from allegations that South Carolina gubernatorial hopeful Nikki Haley had an extramarital affair, she would have to fall a long way to lose the commanding lead she has over the field of other contenders for the GOP nomination, according to a Public Policy Polling survey conducted before the story hit the airwaves. Haley has flatly denied any infidelity, as alleged by a conservative blogger who used to be a spokesman for disgraced GOP Gov. Mark Sanford. The conservative state legislator has the support of 39 percent of likely ...

McMaster Leads GOP Hopefuls in Race to Succeed S.C.'s Mark Sanford

South Carolina Attorney General Henry McMaster is leading the pack of GOP hopefuls running for the seat now held by Republican Gov. Mark Sanford who, because of term limits, couldn't have sought re-election even if he had not become tarred by a scandal over an extramarital affair. McMaster draws the support of 21 percent of likely primary voters, with Lt. Gov. Andre Bauer second at 17 percent, Rep. Gresham Barrett third at 14 percent and State Rep. Nikki Haley fourth at 12 percent, according to a Rasmussen Reports poll conducted March 3 . Nine percent preferred some other candidate and 29 ...

South Carolina's Bauer Regrets Comparing Needy to 'Stray Animals'

Lt. Gov. Andre Bauer is the latest South Carolina politician to make headlines for all the wrong reasons. On Monday, the Republican candidate for governor said he regrets remarks he made comparing people who receive public assistance to stray animals. His words had drawn criticism and mocking from Jon Stewart on "The Daily Show." "Do I regret it? Sure I do. I wouldn't have to be taking this heat otherwise," Bauer said in an interview with The State newspaper. In a town hall meeting last week, Bauer recalled that when he was a child, his grandmother had told him to stop feeding stray ...

SC Lt. Gov. Compares Poor to 'Stray Animals'

(Jan. 25) – Lt. Gov. Andre Bauer – a Republican candidate to replace Mark Sanford as governor of South Carolina – is under fire for remarks he made about people who get government aid. "My grandmother was not a highly educated woman, but she told me as a small child to quit feeding stray animals. You know why? Because they breed," he told an audience in the town of Fountain Inn on Friday. "You're facilitating the problem if you give an animal or a person ample food supply. They will reproduce, especially ones that don't think too much further than that." Bauer later told ...

In S.C, Sanford's Exit Will Leave a Wide Open Field for Governor

In S.C, Sanford's Exit Will Leave a Wide Open Field for Governor

Even if South Carolina Gov. Mark Sanford had not self-destructed this year in a scandal over his extramarital affair, he couldn't have run again because of term limits. That has created an open field in both parties of candidates seeking the job. But right now the common denominator for most is that they are not well-known, and the one who is best-known -- Lt. Gov. Andre Bauer -- is not particular popular, according to a Public Policy Polling survey conducted Dec. 3-6. ...

Half of South Carolina Voters Say Mark Sanford Should Resign

A new InsiderAdvantage poll finds that 49.5 percent of South Carolina's registered voters think it is time for their embattled governor, Mark Sanford, to resign. The poll showed 36.6 percent believe he should stay put. Republican support has eroded for Sanford since he revealed his protracted affair with an Argentine woman, and ethical questions have emerged about his taxpayer-funded travel. Only 47.1 percent of GOP voters now say Sanford should stay in office. Calls from other elected officials for Sanford to resign continue to mount. On Wednesday, the state's lieutenant governor, Andre ...
