Click here to visit the new home of Politics Daily!Good morning, Capitolists! If you listened carefully to the president's speech last night, you probably heard him promise that 90 percent of the oil spilling into the Gulf of Mexico will be captured by the end of the month. But you didn't hear him call for Congress to pass a bill now pending in the Senate that would put a price on carbon emissions, also known as cap-and-trade. Democrats on Capitol Hill and environmental groups are smarting over that omission this morning, - Hayward. Tony Hayward. After two months of giving BP the silent treatment, President Barack Obama will finally meet ...
You've got to give it to two of the most outsized egos in New York politics: They know how to make comebacks. Eliot Spitzer, 59, the former New York governor, is up from a sex scandal two years ago. Andrew Cuomo, 52, who will likely become the state's next governor, is up from a political debacle in 2002. Both are driven, passionate, aggressive, brassy, secretive, manipulative and arrogant. Insiders use more vulgar terms to describe the two heavyweight Democrats, who, of course, have no lost love for each other. Their lives may be parallel but not their fates. On Saturday, Cuomo made ...
Andrew Cuomo, the New York attorney general, and Sandra Lee, the Food Network's foxy star of "Semi-Homemade," were a relatively discreet item for four years, even as they lived together in a Manhattan apartment. While he prosecutes Wall Street criminals and other miscreants around the state, she shows millions of viewers how pre-shredded cheese, bottled dressing, and cream-of-whatever soup can turn mealtime drudgery into manageable, if middlebrow, feasts. And man, can she set a table. This is clearly a woman who never met a centerpiece, holiday-themed china, or festive candlesticks she did ...
New York Senate Majority Leader Pedro Espada Jr. was accused in a civil lawsuit Tuesday of bilking a Bronx nonprofit of $14 million to pay for personal expenses, including meals and "purported business trips" to Las Vegas, Miami and Puerto Rico, state Attorney General Andrew Cuomo announced. Nineteen current and former members of the Comprehensive Community Development Corp. -- including Espada family members and political aides -- were also named in the suit. The nonprofit, also known as Soundview, runs health care clinics that received federal and state aid. It was founded by Espada, who ...
There is not a lot of clarity in the race for the GOP gubernatorial nomination in New York, with "don't know" leading the pack, but whoever emerges on top looks to get crushed by Attorney General Andrew Cuomo, according to a Siena Research Institute poll conducted April 12-15. Former Rep. Rick Lazio leads the GOP field with 29 percent, followed by Suffolk County Executive Steve Levy at 15 percent and millionaire Carl Palladino, who is associated with the Tea Party movement, at 13 percent. Forty-three percent are in the "don't know" category. The margin of error is 7 points for the primary ...
Former Republican Gov. George Pataki, who is much talked-about as a challenger to Democratic Sen Kirsten Gillibrand but has not said if he will run, is leading Gillibrand in a general election matchup by 45 percent to 40 percent with 13 percent undecided, according to a Quinnipiac University poll conducted April 6-11. The margin of error is 2.6 points. Pataki draws a much higher level of support from fellow Republicans than Gillibrand does from Democrats -- 81 percent compared to 65 percent. Pataki attracts 22 percent of the Democratic vote while Gillibrand gets only 9 percent of Republicans. ...
This could get interesting. Suffolk County Executive Steve Levy, an outspoken fiscal conservative, is about to switch from the Democratic to Republican Party and launch a campaign for governor of New York later this week, according to the New York Times. Levy, the popular elected leader of a county stretching to the far end of Long Island, called the culture in the New York state capital a "cesspool" and claimed he would be a perfect fit for cleaning house and rebuilding state government in a "cleaner, more efficient manner." David A. Paterson, the current occupant of the governor's office, ...
New York Attorney General Andrew Cuomo has removed himself from his office's investigations of Gov. David Paterson and appointed an independent counsel, as he apparently gears up to announce his own gubernatorial run. Cuomo said Thursday that Judith Kaye, the former chief judge of New York's highest court, would lead the inquiries into Paterson's handling of an aide's domestic violence case and whether the governor lied about soliciting World Series tickets. "This is an unfortunate situation and these are unfortunate days," Cuomo told reporters of the scandals surrounding Paterson. As for ...
NEW YORK (March 3) -- Political scandals are piling up at an astonishing pace in New York, even by the standards of a state distinguished for dysfunction. Within just a few hours today, three scandals involving New York politicians emerged, each with its own twist. Gov. David Paterson, who is holding onto his seat as serious allegations that he intervened in a domestic abuse case on behalf of an aide are investigated, faced a separate set of charges for allegedly accepting free World Series tickets. Rep. Charles Rangel, who has been accused of a variety of ethics charges involving taxes, ...
New York Gov. David Paterson, who was the subject of a long New York Times article last week depicting him as "increasingly remote," still trails badly in a match-up for the Democratic nomination and has lost ground against a general election candidate, according to a Siena Research Institute survey conducted Feb. 14-19. Despite pressure from Democrats in the White House on down not to run, Paterson announced his candidacy for re-election on Saturday. Attorney General Andrew Cuomo, who has yet to announce a primary challenge to Paterson, leads him by 64 percent to 22 percent, including a ...
