Normally, these events pass with little fanfare. But Dallas Councilman and Mayor Pro Tem Dwaine Caraway has landed in the national spotlight after giving disgraced Philadelphia quarterback Michael Vick a key to the city. "You deserve it, you've earned it," Caraway said as he presented the key to Vick, while an audience of children watched. A local radio reporter caught the ceremony on tape. What's more, the reporter had adopted one ...
Most of the reaction to the Supreme Court's decision to throw out a federal law banning videos of dogfights and other acts of animal cruelty has been over the lopsided 8-1 ruling. The lone dissenter, Justice Samuel Alito, an otherwise fierce conservative ideologue, stood up for animals, as few arch conservatives are prone to do. According to the common wisdom, Justice Alito did so because he owns a dog. I'm not sure of Justice Alito's motivation. Nonetheless, he took a bold stand against the so-called "crush" videos while brandishing his conservative colors by claiming the ban would not ...
Calling it a free speech issue, the Supreme Court struck down a federal law banning videos showing graphic violence against animals. In an 8-1 ruling Tuesday, the justices rejected the government's argument that certain categories of free speech should be weighed against societal costs, The Washington Post reported. Chief Justice John Roberts, writing for the majority, called the law overly broad and said it was not allowed by the First Amendment. "The First Amendment's guarantee of free speech does not extend only to categories of speech that survive an ad hoc balancing of relative social ...
I remember Sea World trainer Dawn Brancheau. Years ago I saw her perform with the killer whales she loved. On Wednesday one of them, a large male named Tilikum, killed her. A seven-minute tourist video shows Brancheau interacting with the whale up until just seconds before the attack. An autopsy revealed Brancheau died from multiple traumatic injuries and drowning. When I heard the trainer had wanted to work with Shamu since her first trip to Sea World at the age of 9, I realized I'd heard that story before. Brancheau was the woman I'd made my way downstage to see after the show. ...
(Feb. 22) -- America's more-unsavory pastimes have long included underground cockfighting and dogfighting scenes, but now reports point toward a new animal-cruelty trend: finch fighting. Last week, Massachusetts authorities seized more than 20 of the birds -- 6-inch "little bursts of yellow" as described by The Boston Globe -- after a home inspection in Ashland, a small town about a half-hour's drive from Boston. More than 20 Brazilian men were at the house, and some were detained by immigration authorities. The raid recalled the arrests in Connecticut last summer of 19 Brazilians involved ...

The Chicago Cubs will be having their home opener at Wrigley Field on Monday afternoon, or at least they're hoping to. You see, the weather in Chicago right now includes a lot of rain in the area all day, so there's a pretty good chance that the game may be rained out. If this does happen, you can be sure that there will be some Cubs fans making the joke, or being serious, that this is the latest omen of the curse against the team.Of course, Opening Day rainouts can only happen to the Cubs because they're cursed. (It's not like Opening Day for the White Sox was snowed out or anything.) This ...
From a light and fluffy Boston.com profile: As the oldest son, Tagg Romney commandeered the way-back of the wagon, keeping his eyes fixed out the rear window, where he glimpsed the first sign of trouble. ''Dad!'' he yelled. ''Gross!'' A brown liquid was dripping down the back window, payback from an Irish setter who'd been riding on the roof in the wind for hours. Wait. Hold on. Did that reporter just say that Mitt Romney strapped a dog carrier, with a dog inside, to the top of the car?! And then proceeded on a road trip from Boston to Ontario?! At Highway speeds?! ...
