Economic Uncertainty Drives Obama's Poll Numbers Lower Than George W. Bush's

In an article in Friday's Wall Street Journal, Democratic pollster Douglas E. Schoen and independent pollster Scott Rasmussen analyze President Barack Obama's recent polling numbers and conclude that the new Administration is quickly polarizing America. The surprising results show that President Obama's net approval rating is actually lower than President George W. Bush's at the same point in his presidency.Polling data show that Mr. Obama's approval rating is dropping and is below where George W. Bush was in an analogous period in 2001. Rasmussen Reports data shows that Mr. Obama's net ...

Gallup: Approval Rating for Congress Highest in Four Years

Congress is riding a sudden wave of good vibrations. Buoyed by Democratic voters, the approval rating for our nation's lawmakers has jumped 20 percentage points over the past two months, to a four-year high of 39%. Though that figure is not especially stellar, it marks quite a turnaround from the historic lows of 2008, when Congressional approval was something of an oxymoron. Democrats are giving a much higher thumbs-up (57% approve) to the Hill than are Republicans (22%), and Independents (34%) are, as is their wont, pretty much in the middle. Though there is a widening gap between the way ...

Does Obama Have 'White Women' Problem?

Does Obama Have 'White Women' Problem?

Politico has an analysis of a May 29 Pew study that suggests that white women, as Politico puts it, are "Cool to Obama." From Politico: Barack Obama's favorability ratings among white women has declined significantly in recent months, particularly among Democrats and independents, presenting an immediate obstacle for the likely Democratic nominee as he moves to shore up his party's base. A closer look at the study, along with some other factors, may quiet the alarm bells somewhat. However, there is a good possibility that, for Barack Obama to get more female voters, perhaps he needs to "get" ...

Bush Helps McCain... Behind Closed Doors

Bush Helps McCain... Behind Closed Doors

The conundrum for McCain: George W. Bush can still draw rich Republicans willing to open their wallets in exchange for a photo with a sitting president. Unfortunately that president is wildly unpopular with the public, so no candidate wants to get too close to him. One GOP congressman went as far as to say Bush is "absolutely radioactive."That sort of thinking has led the McCain campaign to scale back upcoming events featuring Bush. The president was to attend fundraisers in Arizona and Utah, both of which had been open to the public and press. Now the events have been moved indoors to the ...

The President Hits an All-Time Low

The President Hits an All-Time Low

By now, you've heard the news: President George W. Bush is the least favorite of all modern presidents including Truman, Nixon and the evil Chester Arthur. Plus, he can't shoot a three-pointer.The CNN/Opinion Research survey shows that 71 percent of Americans disapprove of Bush. "This is the first time," said Keating Holland, CNN's polling director, "that any president's disapproval rating has cracked the 70 percent mark."But, I know what you're thinking: How can I celebrate this milestone? For a limited time only--262 Days, 8 Hours and 33 Minutes, according to the Bush Countdown Clock--you ...

Hillary's Negative Numbers

By  David Knowles - Politics Daily
Hillary's Negative Numbers

From Chuck Todd:Hillary Clinton is sporting the lowest personal ratings of the campaign. Moreover, her 37 percent positive rating is the lowest the NBC/WSJ poll has recorded since March 2001, two months after she was elected to the U.S. Senate from New York. So, if in the course of her bid to become president, Clinton is actually sinking in popularity, what does this say about her chances of actually winning in the general election? More numbers:When asked if the three presidential candidates could be successful in uniting the country if they were elected president, 60 percent of all voters ...

McCain's Popularity Soars

McCain's Popularity Soars

On his way back from a visit to Iraq, today John McCain enjoyed a warm welcome in Jerusalem. According to the latest Gallup Poll, we like the guy quite a bit over here in America too. According to the poll, 67% of Americans hold favorable opinions of the Arizona senator compared to only 27% that view him unfavorably. This completes an amazing comeback for McCain, who's approval rating plummeted to nearly 40% last summer. The poll found 53% find Hillary Clinton favorable compared to 62% for Barack Obama. Clinton's unfavorable percentage was 44 for Obama. Yesterday, Gallup reported President ...

Report Our Troops: Iraq Awareness Low

Report Our Troops: Iraq Awareness Low

My colleague, Mark Impomeni, reported yesterday that public optimism about the war in Iraq is at a two-year high, according to a Pew Research study. When I heard that, I thought, "Hmm, I can see maybe a decline in utter hopelessness, but optimism?" It didn't seem right. Mark's excellent story relied on a Politico piece that did not link to the actual study. "Pew!", thought I. "I smell a rat." I went to the Pew Web site and tried to find it, but there was no report with anything like that title or date. What I did find was this report, which says that public awareness of American troop ...

Support for War Reaches Two-Year High

By  Mark Impomeni - Politics Daily
Support for War Reaches Two-Year High

The Pew Research Center for the Public and the Press has released polling data that shows the American people are more optimistic now than they have been at any time since 2006 about the Iraq War. In the survey, fifty-three percent, a clear majority agreed that, "the U.S. will ultimately succeed in achieving its goals." That is up sharply from forty-two percent in September of last year, the last time the Pew Center polled that question. The surge in optimism about the war comes as violence levels and U.S. troop casualties continue to decline as a result of the troop surge. Iraq Commander Gen. ...
