Arizona elections

Arizona

The Republican presidential nominee from two years ago is back on the ballot in Arizona this year, trying to win a fifth term in the Senate. John McCain survived a challenge from conservative former congressman J.D. Hayworth in the Aug. 24 primary and is expected to have little trouble defeating Democrat Rodney Glassman in November. Gov. Jan Brewer, thrust into the national spotlight by the controversy over Arizona's new immigration law, faces Democratic challenger Terry Goddard, the state's attorney general. In House races, Republicans are targeting Democrat Gabrielle Giffords, who is seeking a third term representing the 8th District. In the Republican-leaning 3rd District, Ben Quayle, son of the former vice president, won a crowded GOP primary race and is expected to succeed Republican John Shadegg, who's retiring after eight terms in Congress. McCain won his home state of Arizona in 2008.
