Police, Activists Prepare Days Ahead of Ariz. Immigration Law

PHOENIX (July 27) -- The sheriff of Arizona's most populous county is making room in a vast outdoor jail and determined to round up illegal immigrants to fill it. Police from the U.S.-Mexico border to the Grand Canyon are getting last-minute training. And protests and marches are planned throughout Phoenix. Arizona's new immigration law takes effect Thursday, creating a potentially volatile mix of police, illegal immigrants and thousands of activists, many planning to show up without identification as a show of solidarity. At least one group plans to block access to federal offices, daring ...

Judge Susan Bolton Gives Hints About Arizona Immigration Law Verdict

(July 22) -- In U.S. District Court today, Judge Susan Bolton offered conflicting clues as to how she might rule regarding the implementation of Arizona's controversial illegal immigration law on July 29. In two separate hearings, Bolton heard arguments for and against the law, as well as those representing the state of Arizona. Jan Brewer called off the previously scheduled meeting in Phoenix when Mexican officials said they would boycott in protest of Arizona's new immigration law. Now Brewer and Texas Gov. Rick Perry apparently intend to bypass Santa Fe in September. "Obviously, all border governors are welcome and ...

Immigration Law Supporters Rally at Ariz. Capitol

PHOENIX (June 5) -- Hundreds of people supporting Arizona's new law cracking down on illegal immigration rallied near the state Capitol on Saturday afternoon as temperatures reached 105 degrees. Hundreds of motorcycle riders kicked off the downtown Phoenix rally by riding in a procession around the Capitol. Supporters waved American flags and some carried signs that read "What part of illegal don't they understand?" The rally's turnout fell far short of the march organized by opponents of the law last weekend, when an estimated 20,000 people gathered. Ross D. Franklin, AP Judy Schulz, ...

LA Cardinal, Ariz. Senator Spar Over Immigration

LOS ANGELES (April 22) -- A controversial Arizona law targeting illegal immigrants has sparked a war of words between an Arizona legislator and Los Angeles Cardinal Roger Mahony, who on Sunday decried a scenario under the pending legislation of "reverting to German Nazi and Russian Communist techniques whereby people are required to turn one another in to the authorities on any suspicion of documentation." Mahony, leader of the nation's largest Catholic diocese -- and recently under fire himself for his role in managing priests suspected of sexual abuse -- blasted the Arizona law as "flawed ...
