New Combat Uniform for Female Army Troops in the Works

WASHINGTON --Throughout history, military gear has been made with the male physique in mind. But for women in today's combat or close-to-combat jobs, that can mean body armor that fits so poorly it's tough to fire a weapon, combat uniforms with knee pads that hit around mid-shin and flight suits that make it nearly impossible to urinate while in a plane. With women taking on new roles, the issue is getting fresh attention from the military. Jacquelyn Martin, AP At Fort Belvoir, Va., Army Maj. Sequana Robinson demonstrates a new women's combat uniform that is being evaluated by the ...

WASHINGTON -- The Army private suspected of giving troves of classified information to the WikiLeaks website has arrived at a detention facility in Kansas where he will await the government's decision on whether to put him on trial. Graphic Photos of US Troops With Dead Afghans Published in Germany

SEATTLE -- Graphic photos showing U.S. troops and dead Afghans that the Army was keeping under wraps for a war crimes probe were carried by a German news organization Monday, with one showing a soldier smiling as he posed with a bloodied and partially clothed corpse. The photos published by Der Spiegel were among several seized by Army investigators looking into the deaths of three unarmed Afghans last year. Five soldiers based at Joint Base Lewis-McChord, south of Seattle, have been charged with murder and conspiracy in the case. Der Spiegel did not return calls seeking comment Monday, and ...

Army Eyes African Giant Rat as Bomb Detector

They may not be man's best friend or even a friend at all, but rats someday could be used for what dogs now do: finding bombs. Alexander Ophir, a professor at Oklahoma State University's department of zoology, is getting money from the Army Research Office to study the African giant pouched rat, an animal with bad vision but an acute sense of smell. Ophir says the rat's olfactory ability could someday be used to detect explosives. "This is the kind of technology that would be hopefully used to save lives," Ophir told AOL News. In fact, using rats to detect explosives is not entirely new. ...

Female GIs Struggle With Higher Rate of Divorce

WASHINGTON -- Two failed marriages were the cost of war for Sgt. Jennifer Schobey. The breaking point in her first marriage came when her husband deployed to Afghanistan, the last in a long line of separations they had endured as they juggled two military careers. Schobey married another combat veteran, but eventually that union failed under the weight of two cases of post-traumatic stress disorder -- his and hers. They are now getting divorced. Separations. Injuries. Mental health issues. All are added weights to the normal strains of marriage. For women in the military, there's a cold, ...

Army Announces iPhone Blogging App for Soldiers

The military has long had a love-hate relationship with social media, striving to take advantage of Internet tools to promote its message while also wary of an online free-for-all it can't control. Now, in an effort to extend the use of social media for recruiting, the Army today released a free iPhone app and mobile website that would allow any soldier with a smart phone to blog from anywhere. The new blogging app, dubbed "Army Strong Stories," will allow soldiers to share videos, pictures and text from their iPhone. The mobile website is designed to work on a number of smart phones, ...

Rolling Stone: General Deployed Psy-Ops Against US Senators

The U.S. Army ordered a "psychological operations" team to manipulate visiting U.S. senators into pushing for more funding and troops for the war in Afghanistan, according to a report in Rolling Stone magazine. Three-star U.S. general Lt. Gen. William Caldwell is accused of deploying propaganda techniques, which the Army says are intended to "alter the behavior of foreign populations," against visiting U.S. dignitaries to Afghanistan in a potentially illegal, months-long operation to lobby Congress. Caldwell is responsible for the training of Afghan security forces. Gen. David Petraeus, the ...

Army Seeking a Rifle to Replace Controversial M4

The Army is poised to select a new rifle after years of debate about the effectiveness of its M4, which has been in use since the 1990s. "Is there something better than the M4 out there? Let's go find out," Army Brig. Gen. Peter Fuller said about a draft solicitation to replace the weapon, according to Stars and Stripes. The M4, as well as the M16, which was introduced in the Vietnam War, are both derived from the AR-15 and built by Colt Defense of West Hartford, Conn. But the M4 in recent years has been part of a heated debate over rifles, particularly over its use in Afghanistan, with ...
