Oregon Mother Surprised to Hear 2 Sons Kept Caged

PORTLAND, Ore. - An Oregon mother said Thursday she was shocked to learn that the father of her two autistic sons has been accused of mistreating the boys by locking them in a darkened room. Jona Bronson of Tillamook said she'll try to regain custody of the boys she left with John Eckhart, who was arrested along with his current girlfriend on charges of unlawful imprisonment and mistreatment. Police said the boys - ages 5 and 7 - were found Tuesday in a Vancouver, Wash., apartment in a room whose door had been replaced by a makeshift, slatted barrier. When Officer Missy Skeeter ...

Kaspar the Friendly Robot Helps Autistic Kids

STEVENAGE, England -- Eden Sawczenko used to recoil when other little girls held her hand and turned stiff when they hugged her. This year, the 4-year-old autistic girl began playing with a robot that teaches about emotions and physical contact -- and now she hugs everyone. Alastair Grant, AP Eden Sawczenko reacts to Kaspar the robot's "Happy" stance of two open arms as she takes part in a research project in Hatfield, England. IPads Engage and Educate Kids With Autism

When people watch Leo Rosa's fingers tap-slide-tap their way in and out of the mini-worlds contained on his iPad, they notice one thing: This kid knows what he's doing. "People say, 'Whoa dude!'" Leo's mom, Shannon Des Roches Rosa, told AOL News. "He's just sitting there using it like a pro, with obvious mastery. He's just a regular 10-year-old kid." Leo's not "just a regular 10-year-old kid." "His autism is pretty obvious," Rosa said. "When we are out with him, a lot of his behavior draws quizzical stares." Leo is verbal, but he occupies what his mother describes as a communicative ...

Study: Spacing Babies Close May Raise Autism Risk

CHICAGO -- Close birth spacing may put a second-born child at higher risk for autism, suggests a preliminary study based on more than a half-million California children. Children born less than two years after their siblings were considerably more likely to have an autism diagnosis compared to those born after at least three years. The sooner the second child was conceived the greater the likelihood of that child later being diagnosed with autism. The effect was found for parents of all ages, decreasing the chance that it was older parents and not the birth spacing behind the higher ...

Opinion: Autism Fraud Just the Tip of the Iceberg

Opinion: Autism Fraud Just the Tip of the Iceberg

"A deliberate fraud." That's what the British Medical Journal, one of the world's most prestigious periodicals, has written of the study that kicked off the current anti-vaccine movement. It's "clear evidence of falsification of data should now close the door on this damaging vaccine scare," it said in a heavily documented editorial. The lead author of that anti-vaccine study, which also appeared in one most respected medical journals, The Lancet, was British physician Andrew Wakefield. And its consequences include millions of terrified and confused parents, large drops in vaccination rates ...

Will Autism Fraud Report Be a Vaccine Booster?

ATLANTA -- This week more shame was heaped upon the discredited British researcher whose work gave rise to the childhood-vaccines-cause-autism movement, as a prominent medical journal published a report that the man had faked his data. But will it make a difference? Some believe the latest news will finally destroy the reputation of researcher Andrew Wakefield and put an end to the claim of scientific underpinnings for the anti-vaccine movement. "We hope that declaring the paper a fraud will close that door for good," wrote the journal BMJ this week, in an editorial accompanying the ...

Autism Activists Defend Embattled Dr. Wakefield

Autism Activists Defend Embattled Dr. Wakefield

Despite a new report that a 1998 study linking childhood vaccines to autism was based on "bogus data," many autism activists are standing by their man -- the disgraced doctor who led the research. Andrew Wakefield, a British doctor, and his colleagues scared parents worldwide and spurred an anti-vaccine backlash in a study that was an "elaborate fraud," a British medical journal reported Wednesday. Wakefield misrepresented or altered key findings about the 12 children who formed the basis of the case series, according to a piece written by a British investigative journalist in the ...

Dr. Andrew Wakefield Falsified Study Linking Vaccines to Autism, Journal Says

Dr. Andrew Wakefield Falsified Study Linking Vaccines to Autism, Journal Says

An editorial in the British Medical Journal puts forth evidence that a now-discredited study linking autism and common childhood vaccines relied on falsified evidence to make its central claim. "Clear evidence of falsification of data should now close the door on this damaging vaccine scare," the editors of the journal wrote. Why would Dr. Andrew Wakefield make up findings to prove that getting vaccines to help prevent diseases such as measles, mumps and rubella can cause higher rates of autism? According to the journal's editors, the reason was simple: money. Wakefield is alleged to have ...

Our Year of Zombie Politics

Our Year of Zombie Politics

Wait: Even in politics, 2010 was the year of zombies? Sure, the hot new wonky tome "Zombie Economics" tells how "dead" economic theories walk among us to shape our paychecks, and sure, zombies lumber out of our TVs almost no matter what channel we click to, and sure, my fellow fantasy prose-slingers are flinging new novels about the undead at the dust of Stephen King and George Romero, but zombies as a metaphor for 2010's politics? Come on! What happened to vampires? Vampires are a great political metaphor! Bloodsuckers. Say no more. But zombies? Who are they in America's 2010 ...
