Click here to visit the new home of Politics Daily!GLENDALE, Ariz. – Auburn running back Michael Dyer was down. Oregon defenders stopped running. A couple of Tigers headed back to the huddle. Then -- just like Auburn has done all season, in eight come-from-behind victories, through the Cecil Newton mess, through everything -- Dyer was back up. And running. Running across the 50, down the Auburn sideline, for a 37-yard run that was part Barry Sanders and part Tasmanian devil. Five plays later, Wes Byrum kicked a 19-yard field goal with no time remaining and Dyer was running again -- onto the field to celebrate the Tigers' 22-19 ...
GLENDALE, Ariz. -- There are three certainties in life: death, taxes and the SEC winning BCS title games. Auburn University won the fifth consecutive Southeastern Conference national title on Monday night -- a seventh win of the BCS era that means the SEC has now won more BCS titles than the ACC, Big 12, Big Ten, Pac-10, and Big East combined -- but the Tigers won under a cloud of uncertainty. Auburn beat Oregon, 22-19, winning as rebel outlaws, wild mountain lions backed into a dusty western canyon in the Valley of the Sun. It won without a partisan crowd of orange-clad revelers ever ...
SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. -- This time, Cam Newton couldn't escape the rush. He glanced to his left, then to his right. There were just too many bodies. So Newton gave up -- and just took a seat. For more than a half hour Wednesday morning at the Marriott Camelback Inn, Newton sat on a small riser and fielded questions -- 72 in all -- from several dozen media members. Auburn's junior quarterback handled a variety of subjects the same way he's performed on the field all season: calm, cool and, most of the time, with a big smile on his face. On Monday night, Newton will try to cap off his storybook ...
For the past six weeks, Auburn and Oregon have been on a collision course. Unbeaten, and mostly unchallenged, the two heavyweights will finally get a chance to determine which is the better team. That will happen on Jan. 10 in the BCS title game in Glendale, Ariz., between the No. 1 ranked Tigers and No. 2 Oregon. While Auburn and Oregon topped the BCS rankings to secure a berth in the BCS title game, TCU finished third, Stanford fourth and Wisconsin fifth. The rest of the BCS' final top 10 rankings: No. 6 Ohio State, No. 7 Oklahoma, No. 8 Arkansas, No. 9 Michigan State and No. 10 ...
In this edition of The SportsLodge, the BCS mess is dissected, and there's always plenty of Brett Favre news to go around. Click here: ...
First it was the BCS. Now some U.S. senators fear their home state universities may be out in the cold as college football's major conferences move toward realignments that would create a few super conferences, diminishing those schools left behind. In the money-driven shake-up, the University of Nebraska is reportedly on the brink of joining the Big 10 conference and the University of Colorado is headed to the PAC-10. Both are members of the Big 12, which could lose additional schools regarded as football powerhouses. The issue posed by reporters to such senators as Sam Brownback (R-Kan.), ...
When the NCAA announced last week that it was recommending the men's basketball tournament expand by only three teams, the heavens parted. Grown men wept. There was dancing in the streets. OK, so I made up the dancing in the streets reference. But there was a genuine "whew!" from hard-core college basketball fans, who didn't want to see a behemoth and bloated 96-team basketball tournament featuring nearly every major college team no matter how mediocre they were. They didn't want the regular season to become meaningless. They didn't want a team that finished one or two spots out of the league ...
SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. -- As far TCU coach Gary Patterson is concerned, the landscape of college football was changed forever the day the TCU-Boise State Tostitos Fiesta Bowl was announced last month. Not one, but two programs from non-automatic BCS qualifying conferences meeting on the grand stage of the BCS on Monday night at the University of Phoenix stadium. No. 3 TCU hails from the Mountain West, while sixth-ranked Boise State comes in from the WAC. Patterson calls that progress. Others with less a vested interest consider this Fiesta Bowl a huge cop out. Real progress in the landscape of big ...
SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. -- As a spectator with a vested interest, Kellen Moore remembers being on the edge of his seat along with everyone else at University of Phoenix Stadium as Boise State and Oklahoma put on a show for the ages during the 2007 Fiesta Bowl. Boise State, the proverbial little guy from the WAC, stood toe-to-toe with a college football giant, Oklahoma. And when the blows subsided, it was the Broncos who were left standing in a thrilling 43-42 overtime win. College football fans went wild as the non-automatic qualifying Broncos pulled off one of the biggest upsets in bowl history on ...
A House subcommittee approved legislation Wednesday that would force college football to decide its national champion through a playoff system. The bill would force a championship game to solely be the result of a playoff system and ban promotion of such a contest in any other manner. It does not mean, however, that a playoff immediately would come to fruition. Conferences affiliated with the Bowl Championship Series --those that, not coincidentally, benefit financially from the BCS -- cover a wide-range of regions throughout the country. That will make it hard for a vote to pass in the ...
