Conservative Strategist and Publisher Rusher Dies at 87

SACRAMENTO, Calif. -- William A. Rusher, a conservative strategist for more than 50 years who helped engineer Barry Goldwater's nomination as the Republican candidate for president in 1964, has died, officials confirmed Monday. Rusher died Saturday in a nursing facility in San Francisco at the age of 87 after a long illness. His death was confirmed by Richard Vetterli, a spokesman for the San Francisco Medical Examiner's Office. His influence was felt on decades of U.S. politics, from the 1961 stirrings of the "draft Goldwater" effort to opposing Richard Nixon's overtures to China in the ...

Sarah Palin: Could She Run as an Independent or Third Party Candidate?

Sarah Palin: Could She Run as an Independent or Third Party Candidate?

Sarah Palin talks a lot about the tea party. On Fox News last week, she said, "I find inspiration in tea party patriots [and] those with common sense who aren't playing a lot of games." She could be considered the tea party's godmother. With her Sarah PAC and support for 2010 tea party candidates, Palin has generated a lot of good will, not to mention publicity, for a movement that began only two years ago. She also isn't afraid to attack popular Republicans such as New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie. Related Stories Sarah Palin's India Trip: Bill Clinton, Nelson Mandela ...

Lack of a GOP Front-Runner for 2012 at Odds With Republican History

Lack of a GOP Front-Runner for 2012 at Odds With Republican History

Although the contest for the GOP presidential nomination may seem far away (for all except those gearing up for it), there has been a lot of comment about the potential Republican field, ranging from those who regard it as weak to the fact that no one has emerged yet as a front-runner, at least according to polls. Gallup says that situation is not typical. In reviewing its polling dating back to 1952, Gallup notes that in every presidential year up until now, there was a clear front-runner at this stage of the campaign and that, in most but not all cases, the front-runner won the ...

Giffords Proud to Be Arizona's First Jewish Congresswoman

Giffords Proud to Be Arizona's First Jewish Congresswoman

WASHINGTON -- Her family name doesn't "sound Jewish," but Gabrielle Giffords was proud of the identity her grandfather tried to hide years ago when he changed it from Hornstein to avoid the wrath of anti-Semites. It remains unknown what motivated suspect Jared Loughner's alleged assassination attempt that left six dead and Gifford "holding her own" in a critical care unit at a Tucson, Ariz., hospital. But even if anti-Semitism is found to have played a role, those who know the lawmaker say she would never have denied such an integral part of her identity. Matt York, ...

Arizona Is the New California, and It's Already Changing Our Lives

Arizona Is the New California, and It's Already Changing Our Lives

Once upon a time, California was the trendsetter for the rest of the country. What happened there tended to spread, whether it was property tax cuts or stringent environmental regulation. But now it's time for the Golden State to exit stage left. We have a new outsized player in national life. It's Arizona, and it's taking us in a whole new direction. The Grand Canyon State has been in the news this year for enacting what's been called the country's toughest immigration law and for Medicaid cutbacks that amount to death sentences for transplant patients. If Arizona's controversial ...

Takeaway From 2010 Elections: Serious Conservatism Is Back

Takeaway From 2010 Elections: Serious Conservatism Is Back

From its beginnings, a tension existed in the heart of American conservatism between winning hearts and minds -- and winning elections. A slogan from the 1964 presidential campaign hinted at this dichotomy. "In your heart you know he's right" implied that although we believed in Barry Goldwater, we knew you might not – at least not enough of you, not yet. By 1980, a majority of Americans certainly did rally to the side of the conservative star of the Goldwater campaign, but Ronald Reagan's eight years in the White House did not lay to rest the intramural Republican tug of war between ...

Opinion: True Believers Make Me Nervous

Opinion: True Believers Make Me Nervous

(Sept. 17) -- True believers make me nervous, and not just the lefty true believers with whom I have virtually nothing in common. Conservative true believers make me uneasy, too. They're too rigid for my taste. They won't budge from their rock-solid principles, no matter what. They are purists who would rather lose an election than compromise, a word they spit out with contempt. Call me crazy, but I'd rather win. And while being pure is just great, if say, you're a monk, it's not so wonderful in the real world of politics. During the 1964 presidential campaign, Barry Goldwater, the leading ...

Will Republicans Party Like It's 1994? Or Democrats Like It's 1964?

Will Republicans Party Like It's 1994? Or Democrats Like It's 1964?

Now that the primary season has come to its shocking finale and the general election has begun, political observers may be wondering what year this is. For Republicans, whose voting legions have surpassed Democrats in numbers and enthusiasm this year, 2010 is shaping up as a repeat of 1994. That was the year of the so-called Republican Revolution, when the party's Contract With America helped end 40 years of Democratic control of Congress. For Democrats, who dismiss such analogies, the year to keep an eye on is 1982. That's when another new president, Ronald Reagan, entered his first ...
