White House Correspondents Dinner Weekend: It's a Wrap

White House Correspondents Dinner Weekend: It's a Wrap

President Obama used the glitzy White House Correspondents' Association dinner Saturday night to take a few shots at himself, his staff, the press and, of course, the Republicans. In turn, many of the 2,700 guests from the increasingly overlapping worlds of media, politics and celebrity used the annual black-tie dinner to anchor more than a dozen other weekend parties with heavy groupie overtones. Obama, who by many accounts upstaged the headliner, Jay Leno, spoke first. "There are few thing in life that are harder to find and more important to keep than love," he deadpanned. "Well, love ...

Should Democrats Be Grateful to Joe Lieberman?

(Dec. 17) -- Sen. Joe Lieberman might be the most hated man in Washington right now, but he's not without his defenders. Some even say he's done President Obama a favor by insisting that the Senate health care reform bill include no public option. Liberals are enraged because the Connecticut Democrat-turned-independent supported an expansion of Medicare for years, then suddenly turned against it at the crucial moment this month. Senate Democratic leaders, scrambling to get Lieberman's vote in the race to the filibuster-proof magic number of 60, agreed to dump a plan to let people buy in to ...

Republican Slows Health Bill Progress to a Crawl

Republican Slows Health Bill Progress to a Crawl

In a move only a Senate parliamentarian could love, Sen. Tom Coburn (R-Oak.) slowed the Senate's progress on health care reform to a crawl on Wednesday when he insisted that an amendment offered by Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.) be read aloud by the Senate clerk. Senators usually waive the reading of the bill, which is technically required by Senate rules, as a courtesy to move through business more quickly, but Coburn's goal is just the opposite -- to stop progress on the health bill altogether. ...

Ben Bernanke: Economic Rock Star of the Year

Making lists is fun. We like to read about the most Googled stories of the week, the most e-mailed topics of the moment, the best songs and greatest films of the century, the richest people in America, and the best-dressed women of the year. How many, however, flock to learn the names of the top Global Thinkers of the Year? Not a whole lot, I suspect. ...

Lawmakers Fret About Counting on Afghans, Costs in Advance of Obama Speech

As President Obama prepares to lay out his war strategy for Afghanistan, lawmakers on Capitol Hill today expressed concerns about the ability of the Afghan government and military to build on increased American support and the cost of sending additional U.S. troops. ...

Bernie Sanders: Senator and Art Critic

Bernie Sanders: Senator and Art Critic

Senator Bernie Sanders is known as a lot of things: a proud Vermonter, a rumored Socialist, and a noted actor. Now, you can add one more title to that list: major player in the art world. It seems that Senator Sanders was strolling through the Smithsonian Portrait Gallery the other day when he chanced upon the recently unveiled official presidential portrait of George W. Bush. Upon reading the placard next to the painting, he was slightly miffed by some wording describing the work. When he returned to his office, he drew a quill and penned a missive to the museum's director. And the Smithsonian ...
